The well-known Chinese company Xiaomi currently produces a wide variety of equipment, peripheral devices and other diverse devices. In addition, their product line includes Wi-Fi routers. Their configuration is carried out according to the same principle as with other routers, however, there are subtleties and features, in particular, the Chinese firmware language. Today we will try to analyze the entire setup process as easily as possible and in detail, and will also show the procedure for changing the web interface language to English, which will allow further editing in a more familiar mode for many.
How can I find out what router I have?
Signs that it's time to change your router
- it works according to the IEEE 802.11n standard (this is usually indicated on the router
or on its box); - you need Wi-Fi to work even in the farthest corners of the apartment;
- A large number of devices are connected to your Wi-Fi network at the same time.

Setting up the Xiaomi Mi 3G router
We've sorted out the preliminary steps, then let's move on to the most important part of today's article - configuring the router to ensure a stable Internet connection. You should start by going into the settings:
- Launch Xiaomi Mi 3G and in the operating system, expand the list of available connections if you are not using a wired connection. Connect to the Xiaomi open network.
Open any convenient web browser and enter miwifi.com in the address bar. Navigate to the entered address by pressing Enter.
You can change the wireless network name and set a password. Check the corresponding box if you want to set the same access key for the point and the router web interface. After this you need to save the changes.
Next, enter the settings menu by specifying the router login and password. You will find this information on a sticker located on the device itself. If you set the same password for the network and router in the previous step, mark this by checking the box.
Wait for the equipment to restart, after which it will automatically reconnect.
You will need to log into the web interface again by entering your password.
If all actions were performed correctly, you will be in the parameter editing mode, where you can begin further manipulations.
Firmware update and interface language change
Setting up a router with a Chinese web interface is not convenient for all users, and automatic translation of tabs in the browser does not work correctly. Therefore, you need to install the latest firmware to add English. This is done as follows:
- In the screenshot below Fr. Click on it with the left mouse button.
Go to Settings and select System Status. Click on the button below to download the latest updates. If it is inactive, you can immediately change the language.
After installation is complete, the router will reboot.
You will need to go to the same window again and select “English” from the pop-up menu.
Checking the functioning of Xiaomi Mi 3G
Now you should make sure that the Internet is working normally and all connected devices are displayed in the list. To do this, open the “Status” menu and select the “Devices” category. In the table you will see a list of all connections and you will be able to manage each of them, for example, limit access or disconnect from the network.
The Internet section displays basic information about your network, including DNS, dynamic IP address, and computer IP. In addition, there is a tool that allows you to measure the connection speed.
Wireless Settings
In previous instructions, we described the process of creating a wireless access point, but further detailed editing of parameters occurs through a special section in the configurator. You should pay attention to the following settings:
- Go to the “Settings” tab and select the “Wi-Fi settings” section. Make sure dual channel mode is enabled. Below you will see a form for adjusting the main point. You can change its name, password, configure the security level and 5G options.
Below there is a section on creating a guest network. It is necessary when you want to make a separate connection for certain devices that would not have access to the local group. Its configuration is carried out in exactly the same way as the main point.
Working with external drives on the router
I have already mentioned that the Padavan firmware has the ability to manage hard drives connected to the router’s USB connector. Full access to the drive is provided directly from the new account. There is no such option on stock firmware. You will not be able to see what is on your drive through the web interface, much less manage this content.
The only way is to install the MI WI-FI Router mobile client. After installing the Android version, you need to register on miwifi.com and then launch the application.
We look for the “Storage” tab and rejoice. The connected drive will be displayed in full, with all your folders and files. The router will help you copy, move, and delete this data. Anything you want. Commands will be sent to the router by the application on the phone.
This is the fee for using stock firmware; if you have a third-party firmware, these difficulties can be avoided.
Setting up a Xiaomi router is inherently simple. If not for the Chinese language. But this circumstance will not prevent you from achieving uninterrupted operation of your device; you need to take everything into account and finally configure it one single time.
Ways to connect to a Xiaomi router
There are two ways to connect to any router - wired and wireless, i.e. via Wi-Fi connection. Due to the fact that Xiaomi produces only Wi-Fi equipment (at least what is supplied to the domestic market), this means that it can be configured via a wireless connection.
However, in some cases this is not possible. For example, if you don’t have a communication device at hand that supports access to the network via Wi-Fi (phone, tablet, etc.). This will also not be possible if the user does not have a password for the wireless network.
If for some reason you cannot connect to the router via Wi-Fi, you can only use the first connection method - wired. For this you will need a network cable, but, unfortunately, it is not always supplied with Xiaomi routers. However, any other cable will be suitable for connection. When choosing this method, you need to have physical access to the equipment, i.e. it should not be located in an inaccessible place.
If you don’t have a password for the Wi-Fi network
Usually, new (just purchased) Xiaomi routers have a Wi-Fi network that is not password protected. You can connect to the router immediately after turning it on. If the router was purchased secondhand or was previously configured by a field specialist from an Internet provider, then the broadcast Wi-Fi network will most likely be protected with a passphrase. If it is impossible to obtain it, you will only have to use a wired connection to the device. There is another solution - perform a factory reset. This is done simply:
- On the side opposite the front panel, where the communication ports are located, there is a small hole with the inscription “Reset” (there may not be an inscription). The first thing you need to do is find it.
- Inside the hole there is a button responsible for launching the function of resetting all router parameters. You need to take a thin object (a toothpick, for example), insert it into the hole until it clicks and hold it in this position for a certain amount of time.
- All indicators on the front panel, except the power indicator, will light up and then turn off (or simply turn off). This will indicate that the reset was successful.
- Sometimes pressing and holding the reset button has no effect. In this case, you need to press the button and, without releasing it, turn off the power of the device, and then turn it on.
If the reset is successful, the Wi-Fi network broadcast by the router should appear as open. All you have to do is connect to it.
Alternative firmware options
Third-party firmware is free OpenWRT software, as well as modified (compiled) BIN files (the BIN format file is the firmware of any routers) from Asus, ZyXEL, D-Link, TP-Link, Tenda and other routers. Free DD-WRT software is tested by developers and testers for maximum compatibility with as many brands and models of routers as possible.
But if you can be relatively confident with OpenWRT, then, without the simplest “coding” skills, you should not immediately “upload” the firmware from some Asus RT-N66U-N900 into your Xiaomi Router 3/Mini. You risk getting a “brick”, and only in China or the nearest computer service center will they be able to restore it again. Or you will spend many hours – if not days – searching around 4pda.ru and similar resources in search of working instructions for “bricking” the product.

Login problems, password, control panel language and other information
We have already examined the process of accessing the web interface. I would also like to answer a few questions and explain some nuances. As practice shows, it is not always possible to enter the router settings without problems.
- What should I do if the settings page does not open? An error appears on the Xiaomi website or search engine. Be sure to check your connection to the router. Whether it's via cable or Wi-Fi. Please note that you must be connected to the Xiaomi router only. Maybe you connected via cable, but the laptop is also connected to some Wi-Fi network. Try changing your browser. Pay attention to which line you enter the miwifi.com address. Try going to 192.168.31.1. And if possible, log in from another device. You can also reset your router to factory settings.
- How to open miwifi.com in Russian or English? The language of the control panel does not depend in any way on what address or how you enter it. It depends on the firmware. I’ll say right away that there is no original Xiaomi firmware in Russian. The control panel can be either in Chinese (like on my Xiaomi mini WiFi) or, at best, in English (you can try updating the firmware to English). If the Internet is already working through the router, then the settings can be transferred in the Chrome browser, or Yandex Browser.
The translation is not perfect and the appearance of the page is a little spoiled, but it is much more convenient to customize. - What password should I enter when entering settings? I already wrote about this in the article. When you go into the router settings for the first time, you will not be prompted to enter a password. On the contrary, during the first setup it must be invented and installed. In the future, when you access miwifi.com, you will need to enter a password that protects the settings. And if you forget it, you will have to reset it to factory settings.
That's all. I look forward to your feedback and questions in the comments. Best wishes!
How to access the Xiaomi web interface at miwifi.com or 192.168.31.1?
First of all, we connect to the router. You can connect it to a computer or laptop using a network cable. But, since Xiaomi routers do not come with a network cable (at least with the mini model), this is not very relevant. But just in case, I’ll show you how to do it (please note that you may have the Internet connected to the blue port, I just didn’t have it connected at the time of taking the photo).
Or connect to the Wi-Fi network from your laptop, phone, tablet, etc. If the router is new, the network will have the factory name and is not password protected.
After connecting, open any browser on your computer or mobile device (I recommend standard Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge) and go to miwifi.com (you can type https:// to get https://miwifi.com).
If the settings at this address are not available and you see an error, then try going to 192.168.31.1 . You can also type from https://
We enter the address in the address bar of the browser, and not in the search bar. Otherwise, instead of the control panel, Yandex or Google will open with search results.
If the router has not yet been configured, a window will open asking you to install the program on your mobile device. We skip it and move on to setting up the router. You can look at the example of setting up Xiaomi mini WiFi.
If your router is already configured, you will be asked for a password. This is the password you (or someone else) set during the first setup. This is not the password for the Wi-Fi network (but they may be the same).
And after authorization (if you enter the password correctly), a web interface will appear.
If you have forgotten the password for your Xiaomi router, you will have to reset all parameters to factory settings. You will find a link to the instructions below.
Login to settings
The user interface of Xiaomi routers (like any other) is designed in the form of a Web site. It is stored in the internal memory of the device and you will need to use an Internet browser to open it. You need to enter the router's network address in the address bar of your browser. If the default settings have not been changed, then this address will be “192.168.31.1”.
You can also use the request “miwifi.com” (this address can be seen from the bottom of the device). If the connection is successfully established, the initial user interface page will open. If this happens, you can proceed to the next step. Otherwise, read the information below.
If the router's Web interface does not open
An error when going to the address “192.168.31.1” or “miwifi.com” can occur in several cases:
- The router's default network address has been changed;
- Current network parameters of a computer, smartphone, tablet, etc. incompatible with the router’s network parameters;
- The communication device through which you log into the user interface operates through a proxy or VPN server;
- And others.
To solve the first two problems, you need to do the following (using the example of a computer running Windows 7):
- In Windows Start, find the Control Panel section.
- Go to the “Network and Internet” section.
- Next - “Network and Sharing Center”.
- On the right side of the window, find and go to the “Change adapter settings” section.
- Find the icon for the current network connection and double-click on it.
- Click on the “Details” button.
- Find the property “Default gateway IPv4” in the sign that opens, copy the IP address opposite into the browser line and try to enter the router’s user interface again.
- If the connection error remains, close the Network Connection Details window, and then click the Properties button.
- Place the checkbox in the “Use the following IP address” position.
- In the “IP address” field, enter “192.168.31.ХХХ”, where “ХХХ” is an arbitrary number from 2 to 255.
- In the “Subnet mask” field – “255.255.255.0”.
- In the “Default gateway” and “Preferred DNS server” fields – “192.168.31.1”.
- Click “OK” and try to connect to the router again.
If the connection error is related to the proxy or VPN servers running on your computer/phone/tablet, then you just need to turn them off for a while. Today, many browsers provide the ability to use a VPN without the need to install separate programs. In this case, a special plugin is used that is installed in the Internet browser as an add-on. You just need to temporarily disable it in the browser settings (usually in the extensions menu).
There is one more small nuance regarding Xiaomi routers. The settings of some models of these routers cannot be accessed from a computer when using a Wi-Fi connection. Why exactly such a restriction was made is known only to the manufacturer. Therefore, if the browser gives an error when you try to log into the router’s Web interface from a PC, you can try to log into it via a wired connection. If you have any mobile communication device at hand, you can use it.
