What to do if Android games slow down or crash?

Playing on a smartphone is a separate kind of pleasure. To do this, you do not need 3 hours of time, a powerful computer or set-top box. As soon as you have a free minute, you can safely unlock your phone and go into your favorite game. Modern devices are equipped with such powerful hardware that there are hardly any projects that can make your device lag. However, not everything always depends on technical characteristics. On the contrary, most often the problem lies in something else. Today I propose to analyze the most popular problems that users encounter and discuss ways to solve them.

Lags while playing on a smartphone are rare, but it is very unpleasant to encounter them.

I play on my smartphone every day for several hours and I don’t see anything wrong with it. As the greats said, the best rest is a change of activity. Agree, there is nothing better than digging into something after a hard day and reflecting a little.

But sometimes it happens that playing on a smartphone lags and only throws you even more out of balance. I hope that after reading this article, no technical adversities will affect you.

How to clear RAM on your phone

As I already said, most current smartphones are capable of literally any task. And it doesn’t matter whether you’re using a good mid-ranger or a top-end flagship with a Snapdragon 888, most likely both will feel just fine.

Before starting the game, close background applications.

However, if you run the editing application at the same time as Genshin Impact, the device will not thank you for it. It is clear that smartphones have now learned to unload energy-consuming applications from RAM, but, as they say “just in case,” it is better to close all background programs.

If the game has already frozen, the easiest way is to restart the device . Just one big request - do not rush to launch the toy in the first 30 seconds after the restart. Wait at least a minute, because first the device needs to load all important processes.

CPU overclocking

As you know, the Android OS is built on the Linux kernel, and it is this that determines the list of possible processor operating modes. Most often, the maximum processor clock speed at the system level is limited by the specifications of the chipset itself, but often for other reasons. For example, a manufacturer may limit the frequency to increase autonomy or even for marketing purposes. Unlocking unavailable frequencies requires changing the kernel, for which you will need to perform a series of actions: unlock the bootloader, install a third-party recovery and, finally, a modified kernel.

You can find instructions for unlocking the bootloader and installing recovery (say, TWRP) on our forum in the topic about flashing the firmware of your gadget. In addition, we described this process in the Xposed article - improving a smartphone without flashing it (chapter “Preparing to install Xposed”). At this stage, it would be a good idea to make a full backup of your system in case something goes wrong.

You will also need a modified kernel image. If you are sure that your core already supports overclocking, or want to verify the opposite for yourself, feel free to skip to the next paragraph right now. For some devices, similar images (both individual and as part of third-party firmware) are also posted on the forum in the “Android - Firmware” section. If your search in it is unsuccessful, you should try to find a suitable kernel on the xda website. So, for the test smartphone we used a modified kernel from user Alek Dev. The kernel is installed in the same way as any other module for the system - by flashing the zip file from recovery.

You can check that the kernel change was successful using one of the applications that display system information. We took the free Kernel Adiutor: if you have superuser rights, it allows you to change the minimum and maximum frequencies of the cores and graphics accelerator, as well as select the chipset operating profile. After the firmware, the maximum available frequency in Kernel Adiutor increased from the nominal 2 GHz to 2.4 GHz. The same applies to the graphics accelerator, the maximum frequency of which has increased from 682 MHz to 855 MHz. For maximum performance, the performance profile was set in the program.

After the described manipulations, the average fps level in Shadowgun Legends with the same graphics settings increased by about 10 frames. The core overclocking method is suitable if you are missing exactly those same fps to reach the optimal level of 30-35 fps

10 frames and you don't want to sacrifice graphics quality. The disadvantages of the method are obvious - you will have to look for a modified core, and overclocking will have a negative effect on battery life.

Before overclocking, Shadowguns Legends shows 22 fps. With the overclocked processor frequency, Shadowguns Legends adds almost a dozen fps.

Branded gaming utilities from manufacturers

Major manufacturers have equipped smartphones with their own tools to make life easier for gamers. The most powerful such utility is Game Center from Samsung.

Game Center can change game resolution and limit fps. These features are useful both for improving gaming performance and saving battery power, which helps significantly extend the life of the gadget while traveling. The settings in the utility can be configured globally or you can select your own settings for each game. In addition, Game Center adds a floating button. With its help, you can call up a menu during the game to quickly disable touch buttons, notifications, or record video.

Others such as Vivo (Game Mode) and ASUS (Game Genie) have similar built-in applications.

“Game Center” in Honor smartphones allows you to optimize energy consumption, block touch keys and unnecessary notifications. Vivo smartphones received only a minimum set of notification settings, as well as a function to protect against poor Wi-Fi signal. Game Genie from ASUS, in addition to combating unnecessary notifications, can improve game performance and even record macros to automate actions.

Low memory

Regarding Android's methods of working with RAM, many copies have already been broken and it has been repeatedly proven that constant cleaning of RAM is not necessary. However, when running particularly demanding programs, such as modern 3D games, you may need the maximum amount of memory, which requires closing all background and unused programs.

Solution

In this case, CCleaner and Clean Master will help you again. The second is especially noteworthy because, in addition to the function of cleaning RAM and stopping unnecessary background services and applications, it has a dedicated option for optimizing games.

SOLVED: Uninstalling Android WebView update

If your Android applications begin to freeze or crash for no apparent reason, then most likely the problem is in updating the Android System WebView system component. This problem is observed all over the world, on any devices: Xiaomi, Realme, OPPO, Huawei, Honor, Vivo, Samsung, OnePlus and so on.

To fix this problem you need to:

  1. Go to system settings.
  2. Select a menu with controls or a list of applications.
  3. Click on the 3 dots at the top and turn on the display of system applications.
  4. In the search, type “Android System WebView” or simply “WebView”.
  5. Delete its data and update.

If it is not possible to uninstall the latest update on your smartphone, then try uninstalling the Google Chrome browser and then installing it again.

Google has already responded to this problem and announced that a global patch will be released soon to correct this situation.

Reasons for incorrect operation

To make the right decision and fix the problem, you must first find out its essence. So, games on Android OS may not launch, crash during the process, or work incorrectly for six reasons:

  1. It is possible that the operating system on your device is poorly modified (optimized) and therefore does not work efficiently.
  2. You may be trying to install a game that is not suitable for your gadget model. For example, the application worked stably on a new smartphone, but not on the old one, or maybe vice versa. In this case, you will have to postpone the game until better times. When a new gadget modification or application version is released, the game will work correctly.
  3. Or maybe you downloaded a game developed for another device? Check out the system requirements and a lot will become clearer.
  4. The game you are trying to launch is designed for an older or, conversely, newer version of Android.
  5. The game may not work properly due to no fault of yours. Perhaps the authors got carried away by releasing a “crude” project.
  6. You loaded the game cache into the “wrong” folder.

Why can an Android game lag and freeze?

Due to high system requirements

Perhaps this is the first thing you need to pay attention to. Many people forget that a phone is the same piece of hardware as a computer (it also has its own characteristics, on which the performance of the device in games seriously depends). And first of all, you need to make sure whether the phone meets at least the minimum technical requirements. game requirements.

This raises two questions:

  1. what processor, how much free RAM and memory the phone has (not everyone remembers/knows such characteristics of the device);
  2. how to find out tech. game requirements.

I have a separate article on determining the characteristics of a phone on my blog (link to it: https://ocomp.info/kak-uznat-harakteristiki-telefona.html), but a few words about the second question in more detail.

Why clear the cache on your phone?

In principle, the speed of a game almost never depends on the amount of cache on the device. The amount of free internal memory plays a primary role. Almost all mobile equipment manufacturers recommend leaving at least 20% free space. Otherwise, the performance of the gadget drops, which means the game slows down . What's the best way to clear your phone's memory ? That's right, delete the cache.

Clearing the cache on Android is as easy as shelling pears:

  • Unlock your device.
  • Go to Settings.
  • Open Applications, Memory.
  • See which apps are taking up a lot of space.
  • Tap on the desired program and click Clear cache.

Specific tools for specific games

Some popular games have their own assistant applications that allow you to flexibly customize graphics and thus significantly increase fps. For example, GFX Tool is designed for the game PUBG Mobile: the utility allows you to adjust the resolution, graphic style of the picture and a number of other parameters. The most important thing is to correctly indicate the version of the game (if it is installed from Google Play, then the version can be found on the application page in the store).

By lowering the resolution and some other graphics settings, we were able to more than double the fps: from 25 to 55 frames.

How the picture quality has changed can be seen in the screenshots below. Note that the speed of 55 fps seems excessive to us: you can easily try to change the settings so that the fps level is a comfortable 35-40 frames, and the graphics do not suffer too much. If you know of other similar tools for changing the graphics quality in specific games, please share them in the comments.

Restarting the system through the Recovery environment

  1. Turn off the gadget and enter the Recovery workspace. To do this, a certain combination of keys is pressed simultaneously. For example, for Samsung these are the Power and volume down buttons, and for Lenovo - the power key and the middle of the sound control rocker.
  2. To reboot, select the item shown in the image.

While the device is rebooting, performing any actions with it (for example, removing the battery) is strictly prohibited, as this can lead to its “bricking,” that is, a complete loss of functionality.
