When manually searching for drivers and subsequent installation, users are wondering: how to find out which motherboard is on a computer or laptop.
We will look into this issue and consider all possible methods in detail. Which includes:
- routine inspection of the appearance of the laptop case;
- study of available documentation;
- searching for information by laptop model name on the Internet;
- using the capabilities of the Windows operating system.
It will be quite easy to find out the name of the motherboard, so you can choose the method you are interested in right away, rather than reading everything from A to Z.
- CPU-Z
Method One: Windows System Information
Enter msinfo32 in the Windows Search field. The search will return the best match - the classic System Information application. Right-click on it and run as administrator.
Or press Win + R and enter in the field:
runas /user:Administrator msinfo32.exe
Enter the administrator password and the “System Information” window will open, where you need to pay attention to the fields “Main Board Manufacturer”, “Main Board Model” and “Main Board Name” .
Unfortunately, this also happens. In this case, use other methods.
The easiest method
First, it is recommended to use the visual method and simply read the model name on the equipment packaging.
If for some reason the owner does not have the box, then the necessary information is often indicated by the manufacturer in the documentation for the computer.
However, unfortunately, often PC owners cannot find the included instructions for the devices they purchased, or they are simply too lazy to get up from the couch and dig through the papers. In this case, the following step-by-step software tutorials will help you solve the problem.
Method two: DxDiag
Press Win + R and in the Run window enter the command:
dxdiag
The Windows built-in DirectX system diagnostic module will open. Pay attention to the fields “Computer Manufacturer” and “Computer Model” .
The PC will have a motherboard model in these fields. Laptops have the exact model of a laptop.
AIDA
It has expanded functionality compared to the above utility, but is not free. If you plan to use the program only once, then you can use the demo version for free, which is also available on the official website of the application creator.
The algorithm of actions is similar to the previous utility and all the data of interest is located in the “Motherboard” tab.
Method three: systeminfo
Press Win + R and in the Run window, launch the command prompt:
cmd
In the Command Prompt window, enter:
systeminfo
Wait for the system information to load and pay attention to the “System Manufacturer” and “System Model” .
For PCs, these fields will contain the manufacturer and model of the motherboard, for laptops - the full name of the laptop model.
Method four: WMIC
Press Win + R and in the Run window, launch the command prompt as in the previous method. Enter the following text in the command prompt window:
wmic baseboard get product,Manufacturer,version,serialnumber
This method allows you to find out accurate information about the motherboard on both your PC and laptop.
This will launch the WMIC utility built into Windows and cause it to display data that will allow you to see what kind of motherboard you have.
Method five: Speccy
An excellent utility from the creators of CCleaner - Piriform Speccy . By installing it, you can find out all the information about the components of your computer or laptop, as well as their current state - for example, it allows you to check the temperature of the processor. In particular, the program knows how to determine which motherboard is on a PC:
In
the Motherboard you can get all the information about the motherboard - for example, about the chipset, BIOS, PCI-Express slots and other details needed by a specialist.
Using third party utilities
Did the built-in tools give you insufficient information, or were they unable to recognize the component model at all? Install one of the programs suggested below. All of them offer detailed information about the hardware status of devices. Using GPU-Z, Aida64 or similar software, you can completely control the state of your PC.
CPU-Z
CPU-Z is a completely free program that shows information about the hardware of a PC or laptop.
There is no Russified version; the software only supports English and Chinese. However, the interface is primitive, so you will quickly find your way around it. Official website: https://www.cpuid.com/downloads/cpu-z
After downloading CPU-Z, launch the software, then find “Mainboard” in the menu. In "Motherboard", the first two paragraphs show the basic information about the motherboard.
Aida64
The information is located in the “Computer” sub-item, “Summary information” sub-item.
Scroll down to the "DMI" line. Here you can find the manufacturer, version and serial number of the motherboard. Official website: https://www.aida64.com/downloads
Review the "System Board Properties" list on the "System Board" page. The parameters of the bus, chipset, and memory are displayed here. It also displays links to information about the motherboard manufacturer.
It is worth considering that the software is paid, but there is a trial period and it is enough for your task.
HWiNFO
The HWiNFO32/64 program allows you to see not only general data, but also the set of chipset functions, the multicontroller chip, the PCI-e bus, and so on.
Official website: https://www.hwinfo.com/download/
The board model is indicated in the section with basic statistics (“Summary only”). More details can be found on the “Motherboard” page, which can be found in the menu on the left.
Speccy
The utility has almost the same functionality as those proposed above - it provides basic information about the OS, CPU, RAM, graphics, peripherals, and sound devices.
Official website: https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy/download
Open Speccy and go to the “Motherboard” section (“Motherboard” in the Russian version). You can find it in the left menu. All available information about your system will open before you - the model will be displayed in the second line.
The easiest way to check is to use standard operating system tools. If they displayed incorrect information or could not recognize the motherboard model, download one of the proposed applications. Moreover, such software will help you find out the models and names of other system components, which can be useful when replacing components.
Method six: CPU-Z
The free CPU-Z utility is very popular for obtaining data about the processor - such as frequency, temperature, and so on. But it also supports collecting data about other components, for example, about the motherboard on the Mainboard .
Using the program, you can not only find out what kind of motherboard you have, but also check for chipset driver updates online.
Video instruction
If you don't want to read long step-by-step instructions and look at screenshot data, just watch the training video in which our author shows in one minute how to find out the name of the motherboard for free and without programs.

Method seven: System Spec
Another old but still useful and free information utility is System Spec . It also allows you to find out all the components of the computer, including immediately allowing you to see what motherboard is on the computer in the Motherboard .
The utility requires running as an administrator, otherwise not all data will be available. However, it will show the motherboard anyway.
Visual inspection
This method is simple and reliable. To find out the board markings you will need to gain access to the inside of the PC. The computer must be turned off when performing this operation. You should remove the cover and carefully inspect the board. Often there are several stickers and decals with various data on it - serial number, part number, name. You need to find a nameplate with the product model. Often the name is applied directly to the PCB board.
On a note! A convenient method is to take a photo of all the stickers and inscriptions with your smartphone and then calmly examine them on the phone screen.
To find out the board markings you will need to gain access to the inside of the PC.
But sometimes all the inscriptions are already so worn out, and the information on the stickers is almost impossible to make out. Another case is when the computer is under warranty and sealed. Opening will void the product warranty. Then you will have to use other methods to determine the board model.
Method eight: HWInfo32 Portable
This utility is notable for the fact that, unlike all the others, it does not need to be installed. Just download the archive with the utility to your computer and run the desired file - for a 32-bit or 64-bit platform.
Information about the motherboard is available in the object tree in the Motherboard .
These are affordable and completely free ways to find out what motherboard is installed in your computer - and also to begin to better understand and understand your hardware. In addition to the methods built into Windows, CHIP recommends the Speccy - we found it to be the most accurate and detailed in analyzing the components of a particular PC.
HWiNFO
The list of ways to view the motherboard model is completed by the HWiNFO utility, distributed free of charge. To find out the information of interest using it, the user must:
- Download (link - hwinfo.com), install and open the utility by clicking on the Run button.
- Close the uninformative “summary” window.
- Switch to the Motherboard tab in the main window.
- And find the information of interest in the right panel - as you can see in the example, the program shows information equally well for both desktop computers and laptops.
- The PC owner can copy the data directly from here - or generate a report by selecting the Create option in the Report menu.
- By determining the file type.
- And by ticking the required components (in this case, the same Motherboard, that is, the motherboard), and then clicking “Finish”.
- The report will be saved in the program folder; Data about the motherboard, of course, can be freely copied, sent to acquaintances and friends, and disposed of in any other way.
