After purchasing a desktop computer or laptop with the OS installed, you may encounter a situation where after a certain time a message appears about the license expiration. Main reasons for license expiration:
- an illegal installed build of Windows discovered by Microsoft specialists during account registration;
- the trial version of "ten" expires;
- the trial period has been extended by the cracking program, after a short period of time the message will be displayed again;
- The PC is installed with Windows Professional OS, which requires regular fees.
Also, the reason for the pop-up notification with the corresponding inscription may be system failures. The free trial period is 12 months. Afterwards, the user will have to purchase a license key to activate the OS.
What to do if Windows 7 detects hard drive problems?

To solve the problem you will need:
- Go to the command line through the Start menu using “cmd”, which is entered in the search field. In the Start menu, type cmd in the search.
- Run the program as administrator by right-clicking on the shortcut. Run the command as administrator
- In the window that opens, enter “sfc / scannow” (with spaces) and the enter button. In the “Command Line” field, enter the command “sfc /scannow”, click “Enter”
This tool checks files and automatically selects replacement of damaged sectors with undamaged backup copies. After finishing the program, you will need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
Important! Before entering the command, it is recommended to create a backup copy of all data stored on your hard drive. While checking system files, the tool may erase some data.
Troubleshooting hard drive problems with the "chkdsk" command
If the previous method did not help, there is a second option to fix the problem - the “chkdsk” command. To run it you will need:
- Enter the command line, repeating steps 1–2 of the previous list. Go to the “Command Line”
- In the window that opens, type “chkdsk c” (where “c” is the name of the disk being checked, it can change to d, f, etc.) or “chkdsk c /f” (where “c” is also the name of the disk , and “/f” is a command for automatically selecting replacements for damaged sectors). Please note that the first option only detects the problem, while the second one finds and fixes it. After you have entered the desired command, you must press the enter button. - If, after the program has finished running, the inscription (“Y/N”) appears at the end, this means that when checking Windows 7, it encountered an obstacle that will be eliminated after restarting the computer. A pop-up window notifying you that your license is expiring does not affect the functionality of your PC in any way. The user just needs to restart the gadget and continue working as usual. In this case, the theme will not be displayed on the Desktop. Instead, a black screen will appear. Even installing a new theme will be temporary, then the picture will disappear again.
After a while, the notification window will reappear on the screen on top of all other open windows. This greatly interferes with work. You cannot remove the window with a message about license key activation by simply canceling it. There are certain ways to do this, which are described below.
How to delete a reminder

- In the “Command Line”, write and run the slmrg-rearm command, followed by the line services.msc to go to the full list of existing services.
Run the command services.msc - Find the Windows License Manager service, double-click on it and stop it by clicking on the “Stop” button. Don't forget to apply the changes, and then follow the same steps for the Update service. After the system reboots, the window will disappear.

How to find out the Windows version and license expiration date

Why do I need to check my license when upgrading from previous versions to Windows 10?
Users who switched to Windows 10 from their previous versions of Windows in 2022 have doubts about the legality of the software they acquired. The truth is that Microsoft used a peculiar marketing ploy that misled many. This is the contradiction invented by Microsoft.
- On the one hand, back on July 29, 2016, it was officially announced that the period of free transition from previous versions of operating systems to Windows 10 was closing.
- On the other hand, the Microsoft website officially posted information about the extension to an “indefinite period” of the free transition to Windows 10 for people with disabilities. Since no one actually asked for any confirmation of limited capabilities, it is clear that the free update was actually extended to everyone. The end of the “indefinite period” was January 16, 2022.
- In addition, even after January 16, 2018, the Upgrade Assistant utility is available for download on the Microsoft website, with which you can also upgrade your old operating system to Windows 10 for free. Despite the fact that no one canceled the official statement on the termination of free passage on July 29, 2016!
- And that's not all! On the official website (checked today, November 12, 2018), on the “Update to Windows 10: Questions and Answers” page we read literally the following:
To the question “Is it possible...” Microsoft almost openly answers “Yes, just change the time on your computer to any date before July 29, 2016.” This despite the fact that the free transition is officially closed!
All this marketing confusion that Microsoft has created is aggravated by the fact that there are not entirely legal ways to update and install a new operating system for free. For example, theoretically, you can upgrade to licensed Windows 10 even if you have pirated versions of Windows 7 or 8.1. During the installation process, the system should request a 25-digit activation key. But if you first disconnect the Internet connection, the key is not requested.
