Why “Web page is unavailable” and what to do about it

When opening a website through a browser like Chrome, Yandex or Edge, the user may see an error that “ Web page is unavailable ” and will not be able to visit this site.

The problem when a page is temporarily unavailable or is constantly moved mainly appears due to problems with the site itself, or more precisely with the server where the site is located. But, these could also be problems in the Windows 11 or Windows 10 OS itself, where there may be problems with DNS, proxies, junk IP addresses or cookies.

This guide will tell you what to do and how to fix the error when the web page at the address (URL) may be temporarily unavailable or permanently moved to a new address.

Checking the site itself

First of all, you need to make sure that the site you are trying to access is working. To do this, there are many online services for checking website accessibility. Go to https://www.reg.ru/whois/check_site and write the name of the domain that does not open in the browser, then click check. In a couple of seconds you will see the availability of the site and whether it is working.

There is access to the Internet, but the pages do not load - how to fix it?

In this article we will look at a rather ambiguous problem: there is a connection on the network, but in the browser it is impossible to go to some web resource. It’s true, sometimes a situation may arise in which the notification area will clearly indicate that the user has access to the Internet, i.e. there is no red cross or yellow exclamation mark on the connection icon, but the browser persistently tries to prove the opposite to it, producing various errors and notifications of problems.

Reading these lines, you have probably encountered this strange problem yourself. Luckily, there are a number of methods you can use to try to eliminate this problem. It is also worth noting that this problem can occur on absolutely all versions of the Windows operating system, connection types and browsers, so no one will be left behind. So, let's see what you can do if network access is observed, but the browser refuses to work.

Disable third-party antivirus

If you have a third-party antivirus or other traffic or computer protection programs installed on your computer or laptop, then temporarily disable them. In addition, the best solution would be to uninstall and check the availability of the site, since in some antiviruses the firewall will work even if the antivirus itself is disabled. Also, pay attention to whether you have any security extensions installed in the browser itself.

when I go to the VKontakte link it says that the web page is unavailable why

The application closed unexpectedly because the memory was full. Android phone says not enough memory although there is memory on the phone, why and what to do if there is not enough memory in the phone

IF YOU DO NOT GO TO CONTACT, Odnoklassniki OR OTHER SITES.

1. Go to “Start” - “Run” and in the window that opens, enter C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts and in the window that opens, select “Notepad”. 2. View the contents of this file. If there are any lines there containing words in contact ru or mail ru or any other site addresses, then you need to delete these lines and save the file. By default, there is only one uncommented line - 127.0.0.1 localhost, leave it and delete the rest. Next, restart your computer and be happy. 3.If cleaning the host file did not help, then delete the browser, clean the registry with the special program CCleaner 3.19, restart the computer and install a new browser. 4. And throw antiviruses such as node 32. Avast into the trash. Avira. Norton. install the most normal antiviruses Kaspersky Internet Security or Dr.Web Security Space, check your computer with the utility more often

Here's another way. 1. start - execute 2. write: regsvr32 jscript.dll 3. Click OK. A window appears, click OK again. 4. start - execute 5. write: regsvr32 vbscript.dll 6. Click OK. A window appears, click OK again.

YOU CAN TRY THE FOLLOWING METHOD. 1.if you have Windows XP, menu-start-control panel-internet options-advanced-reset.

This was recently recommended here:

Reset DNS and IP

If the site administrator changed the domain or moved the site to another server, then it takes 24 hours for the new DNS server addresses to be applied on the Internet. Since Windows 11/10 stores DNS and IP addresses locally to quickly reopen sites, an error when a web page is unavailable is quite likely.

Press Win+X and launch Terminal (Administrator) or PowerShell (Administrator) , then enter the commands below one by one, pressing Enter after each one. Next, restart your PC.

  1. netsh int ip reset
  2. netsh winsock reset catalog
  3. ipconfig /flushdns

Google Recommendations

According to recommendations from the Google Search Quality team, to ensure that a site's unavailability due to technical reasons does not have a negative impact on the site's reputation, it must be properly identified. It is best to return a status code of 503 (Service Unavailable). It informs the search robot that the server is temporarily unable to process requests for technical reasons (maintenance, overload, etc.). In addition, in this case, you can provide information to visitors and bots about when the website will be restored to service. If you know the duration of the downtime in seconds or the expected date and time of its end, then they can be indicated in the Retry-After header field, which Googlebot uses to determine the appropriate moment to re-index the URL.

Example 503 response:

header('HTTP/1.1 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable'); header('Retry-After: Sat, 8 Oct 2011 18:27:00 GMT');

It's good practice to return a 503 status code for server errors, site unavailability, down for maintenance or redesign, high traffic usage, or for stub pages. If unavailable, you should change the site's DNS to point to a temporary server that returns a 503 response.

However, it's important not to treat the 503 status code as a permanent fix—a persistent 503 could be considered a sign that the server has become permanently unavailable, which could result in it being removed from Google's index.

The screenshot below shows messages posted on Twitter by a Google specialist regarding the use of the 503 response code when the site is unavailable:

Yandex recommendations

The Yandex reference book on http status codes also recommends code 429 (Too Many Requests), which should be used if the site is overloaded with requests. It means that too many requests were sent in a short time. This could indicate, for example, a DDoS attack. If you configure the response code 429, the robot will crawl pages less often to reduce the load on the site. Such a response will allow you to avoid shutdown of the site by the hosting and survive longer unavailability without losses. A 429 response may be accompanied by a Retry-After header, which indicates after what time the request can be repeated, but Yandex does not take this header into account.

Example http code 429:

HTTP/1.1 429 Too Many Requests Content-Type: text/html Retry-After: 3600

After restoring the site, the response code 200 should be returned for indexed pages.

Change DNS servers

In Windows 11/10, DNS servers are received automatically, which means from a local provider, where they may be unstable. Let's change the DNS server to Google, as they are faster and better processed.

  • Press Win+R and enter ncpa.cpl to open Network Adapters.
  • Right-click on the Ethernet or WiFi adapter and select Properties .
  • Select IP version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click on “ Properties ” below.
  • In the new window, set “ Use the following DNS server addresses
  • Specify Preferred 8.8.8.8 and Alternate 8.8.4.4
  • Check the box “Confirm settings when exiting” and OK.

Problems with the provider

The problem with the provider is the disruption of communication between different parts of the network.

Communication diagnostics

In the command line interpreter window (how to open the window is written above)

type the command tracert 85.119.149.129 (for non-Windows systems the command may look like tracert 85.119.149.129 ).

The result of executing the command should look like this:

C:\Users\User >tracert 178.248.235.44 1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms GATEWAY [192.168.1.1] 2 1 ms <1 ms 1 ms c121-97.ntt.ru [84.253.97.121] 3 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms 192.168.223.153 4 4 ms 4 ms 4 ms 77.37.250.78 5 4 ms 4 ms 4 ms m9-cr01-be2.msk.ip.ncnet.ru [77.37.254.209] 6 4 ms 4 ms 4 ms ae11 .RT.M9.MSK.RU.retn.net [87.245.255.149] 7 4 ms 8 ms 4 ms ae0-5.RT.MR.MSK.RU.retn.net [87.245.233.29] 8 4 ms 4 ms 4 ms GW-Xtend.retn.net [87.245.253.194] 9 4 ms 4 ms 4 ms 85.119.149.129 C:\Users\User >

It is important that the last line contains the entry 85.119.149.130 or 85.119.149.129 (IP address data may change, you can check the current IP address in our technical support) with the correct IP address.

If the execution result looks like this:

C:\Users\User >tracert 178.248.235.44

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms GATEWAY [192.168.1.1] 2 1 ms <1 ms 1 ms c121-97.ntt.ru [84.253.97.121] 3 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms 192.168.223.153 4 4 ms 4 ms 4 ms 77.37.250.78 5 4 ms 4 ms 4 ms m9-cr01-be2.msk.ip.ncnet.ru [77.37.254.209] 6 * * * 7 * * * 8 * * * 9 * * * 10 * * * 11 * * * 12 * * * 13 * * * 14 * * * C:\Users\User >

then there is a breakdown in communication between different parts of the network.

The network point where the cause of the violation is located can be seen as a result of the command execution. In this example it is m9-cr01-be2.msk.ip.ncnet.ru [77.37.254.209]

Internet properties

Press Win+R and enter inetcpl.cpl to open Internet Properties. Click on " Delete " to clear the logs. In the next window, select everything with check marks.

Next, go to the “ Connections ” tab and click on “ Network Settings ” at the bottom. Automatic detection of parameters item should be checked .

Access recovery

To restore access in the first case, when there is a problem with the computer, you should eliminate malicious files and return the hosts file to its original state.

If a profile is blocked due to hacking or for any other reason, you will have to contact the admin

Virus on the computer

A virus program on a computer that blocks access to a VKontakte page can enter the system when downloading unlicensed games and applications that supposedly allow you to hack someone’s account, increase your rating on a social network or Youtube, and other files from unverified sources.

After launching the file, when you try to log in, a message appears indicating that the page is unavailable.

In the latter case, there is often a request to enter a password or phone number, as well as send an SMS.

This is required for scammers to be able to log into the page or directly transfer money from a phone account.

In any of the options, you should not fall for the tricks of scammers and provide confidential information.

After all, as a result of unauthorized access to the page, both the page owners and their friends who receive links or files with viruses and messages with fraudulent offers may suffer.

Moreover, you should not send SMS.

Correcting the hosts file manually

In order to fix a hosts file damaged by a virus, you need to do the following:

  1. Open the system drive (usually C:);
  2. Go to the folder WindowsSystem32driversetc;
  3. Find the hosts file.

The first three items can be replaced by typing the name in the Explorer search bar:

Having opened the file using, for example, regular Notepad, you should make sure that its text does not contain any extra addresses after the entry 127.0.0.1 localhost.

If the file does not open for some reason, you will need to restart your computer and enter Safe Mode. The mode is entered by pressing the F8 key before loading the system.

If there are any entries after the IP address - and, especially if among them there is text like vk.com or vkontakte.ru, you should definitely delete them and save the file.

Notice!

Often, malware embeds addresses at the very bottom of hosts, so it’s worth looking through it to the end.

After changing a system file, it is worth looking for the program that made the changes to it. Most often it is called vkontakte.exe - if you find one, you should delete it immediately.

Using the AVZ utility

If troubleshooting a problem with the hosts file causes the user some difficulty or fear of damaging system settings, you can download the AVZ program, which is specifically designed to resolve such issues.

This application is capable of:

  • Return the system file to its original state;
  • Clear static routes, which may also be the reason for lack of access to VK;
  • Perform other actions that optimize system performance.

You can download the program on the official website of its manufacturer (Kaspersky Lab) or on other services - preferably verified ones, so as not to download a new virus to your computer.

AVZ is launched as a computer administrator. This is followed by:

  1. Find the “File” item in the main menu;
  2. Select “System Restore”;
  3. Set all the checkboxes as indicated in Fig. 5.
  4. Restart your computer and log into VKontakte again.

Hacking check

If all else fails, you will have to check whether the web page was actually hacked or even already blocked after being hacked.

To do this, open the command line by entering the text “cmd” into the command window (called with the Win + R keys).

In the line you should enter nslookup vk.com, and immediately after that - ping vk.com.

The address that appears after executing the second command must match one of those shown by the first.

In this case, you receive proof that everything is fine with access to the social network. But your page has been hacked and blocked by the VKontakte administration.

All that can be done in this case is to contact the administration to unblock your account.

In this case, they are usually asked to enter a password, phone number and a number of other data to identify the owner of the page (including a security question).

It usually takes some time to restore access.

Important!

But
the real administration, unlike scammers, never asks the user to send SMS to unknown numbers.

Deleting cookies in the browser

Open your browser and press the Ctrl+H , click on clear history and select all time. Select all items with checkmarks and click delete data.
