How to log into a Zyxel router, set up a wireless network, update firmware and protect the admin panel from unauthorized access? Using examples with illustrations, we will tell you the subtleties of setting up the Zyxel Keenetic router. For many (who are used to TP-, D-Link), setting up “Kinetics” seems complicated and incomprehensible. Let’s dispel this myth by showing the basic elements of device control using simple examples.

The instructions are suitable for almost all Kinetic models: Zyxel Keenetic Air, Zyxel Keenetic Lite, Zyxel Keenetic Omni and others.

Connection

Before software configuration, you should perform hardware configuration (as for routers from other manufacturers). This means physically connecting the device to power, connecting network wires, etc. You can enter the settings of the Zyxel router using a wired or wireless connection.

Wired

For initial setup, it is recommended (both by the manufacturer and by experienced professionals) to use a wired connection and a personal computer or laptop:

  1. Plug in the power supply and connect it to the power socket of the router.
  2. Using a LAN cable, connect the computer and the router by connecting the wire to the LAN port.
  3. Make sure the LAN light on your router is active and blinking.
  4. On the computer, the LAN connector should be illuminated (on laptops, the indication is not present in all models).

Wired connection of the router to the computer:

Via Wi-Fi

If you decide to set up Zixel Kinetic and go into the router settings via a Wi-Fi connection, then follow these steps:

  1. Turn on the router (connect to the power supply).
  2. We use any device with a Wi-Fi adapter (computer, laptop, phone). We are looking for our network. It may bear a name with the name of the manufacturer.
  3. If you don’t know the name, or worse, the network password, and the standard factory one doesn’t work (you can see it on the device sticker at the bottom), then you should press the WPS button and within 2 minutes you can connect devices without a password.

Features and Features

The main characteristic of Keenetic Air KN-1611 is two modes of operation. The first is a classic 100-megabit dual-band router that works using the IPoE/PPPoE, L2TP/PPTP and 802.11ac protocol.

The second is a signal repeater via cable or as part of a Mesh Wi-Fi wireless system. It is because of this function that the router was called an Internet center.

An important function for a developed Mesh system is seamless roaming - when users move in space, reconnection between points occurs automatically and without delay. With it, there is no need to constantly configure the connections of the Keenetic Air KN 1611 router.

Some useful features for gamers and fans of watching 4K video include:

  • signal parallelization function between MU-MIMO clients;
  • technology to increase bandwidth for fast devices Airtime Fairness;
  • Dynamic signal routing to stabilize Beamforming connection.

The strict appearance, side ventilation slots and holes for wall mounting allow you to place the Keenetic Air KN-1611 wherever and whenever you want.

The best option would be to wall mount the router at a level of 1.5-2 m from the floor.

Login to the router web interface

Regardless of the connection type, entering the interface is the same.

To enter the settings of the Keenetic router, follow the steps:

  1. We enable any web browser (Chrome, Edge, IE, Opera, Safari, Mozilla).
  2. In the address bar, enter the address of the control panel website https://my.keenetic.net/ or you can use the IP to enter the Zyxel Keenetic 192.168.1.1 menu. Let's go to the website.
  3. We see the authorization window. Enter the login and password of the router administrator. The default login is admin, password is admin.
  4. Click OK to enter the Keenetic web interface.

How to set up a router

When you first configure the router via the web configurator or mobile application, after logging into your My Keenetic Net personal account, the quick setup wizard starts.

On this screen, you need to click the “Start Quick Setup” button, then read and accept the license agreement. On the next screen, the system will ask you to set an administrator password:

This password will be used to log into the configurator.

New versions of Keenetic device software do not allow you to skip setting a password. You must enter it for further configuration.

If the router supports several methods of connecting to the Internet, you need to select the required one:

If an Ethernet connection is selected, you need to enter the connection data in the appropriate fields according to the instructions:

  • connection protocol: PPPoE, PPTP or L2TP (for PPTP and L2TP you will also need the VPN server address);
  • username and password (if required);
  • static IP address of the client, if available, or specify automatic receipt;
  • subnet mask, default gateway and DNS servers.

All this information is usually specified in the agreement with the Internet provider. If the contract has not been saved, or there is no such data, you can clarify it with the technical support service.

When the data is entered, the router will attempt to access the Internet:

After successfully connecting to the Internet, the following window will appear:

You will then be prompted to change the network name and password to connect to Wi-Fi:

This completes the quick setup. In the future, you need to change connection parameters or configure the local network manually in the web configurator or application.

The following functions are available in the My Kinetic account:

  • viewing information about the status of the router: model, software version, continuous operation time since the last shutdown, etc.;
  • information about connected devices;
  • set a speed limit or deny Internet access for individual clients;
  • configure a guest network;
  • add a network filter or firewall;
  • You can also change other network parameters, which is important for advanced users.

You can also change the operating mode of the device (if it supports several modes):

  • router;
  • adapter;
  • amplifier/repeater;
  • access point/repeater.

The process of setting up a Keenetic router can be seen in the video:

Login via mobile application

Zyxel routers can be configured using a convenient mobile application. Please note that it is not supported by all models and only on firmware version 2.05+. How to update the firmware to a newer one, we’ll talk a few paragraphs below. You can also control the router from your phone via the web interface, but the program is much more adaptive to finger control.

You can download the application from the official App Store and Google Play stores. After installation, we launch it and are immediately prompted to create a password for the Internet center. Enter a new password if you are using it for the first time. Then we get to the main menu, where connected devices and other information are visible.

The configurator is quite extensive:

  1. Setting up an Internet connection.
  2. Network user monitoring.
  3. Reboot and reset settings.
  4. Speed Limit.
  5. Site filtering.
  6. Port forwarding.
  7. And many other features for advanced users.

Keenetic application for phone

Setting up via the My Keenetic Net web account in the browser of a tablet or smartphone is not always convenient. Meanwhile, today many users do not have a computer or laptop, and configure routers from their phones. Manufacturers took care of this and created the Keenetic application for mobile devices.

It can be downloaded from all major stores: Google Play for Android, App Store for iOS and GetApps for Xiaomi equipment. To work in the Keenetic application, you need to create a user account. In terms of its functions and capabilities, the application is similar to the My Keenetic Net personal account with a web interface, but it is much more convenient.

For example, to connect to a router, you do not need to manually search for a network and enter a password. It is enough to scan the QR code from the router sticker with your smartphone camera in the corresponding section of the application, and it will appear in the list of devices. Then you need to enter and save your login information to the administrator’s account (admin and the created password). The application will allow you to save data about all your Internet devices in your account, and subsequently connect to them without entering a login and password. Thanks to cloud technology, you can manage Internet centers and routers not only from their local network, but also from anywhere in the world with Internet access.

You can download the application using the links on the official website in the section https://help.keenetic.com, or find and download directly from the application store of your device. For routers with a KeeneticOS version lower than 3.1, you must install the previous MyKeenetic application. Its capabilities are a little more modest, but, in general, similar to the new one. Manufacturers have left this application available in stores to support older devices, but updates and fixes for it are no longer released.

Possible problems and their solutions

Zyxel routers are relatively easy to manage and configure, so most software-level problems are still at the stage of entering these same settings. Let's look at the most typical problem cases.

I can't access the site itself

Sometimes it is not possible to enter the settings of the Zyxel router at all; even the login and password entry window does not load.

  1. Check the connections between the router and computer. Make sure the network indicator is active.
  2. Make sure the network cable (patch cord) is in the LAN (not WAN) port.
  3. Make sure you have entered the correct address in your browser.
  4. Try logging in from another device (there may be a problem with the computer’s network card).
  5. Try wired and wireless connections.

Important! Make sure you enter your login address in the address bar and not in the search bar.

Login or password does not work

If the page loads, but you do not know the administrator login and password:

  1. Look on the router itself. The sticker usually contains login information for the control center.
  2. If the standard login and password pair does not work, it means that someone has already set up and used the router and changed the data. First, ask the person who set it up before for the password, if possible. Otherwise you will have to do a hard reset.
  3. Check your keyboard layout. It often happens that users type an English password on the Cyrillic layout.
  4. Check if CAPS LOCK is enabled.

If the standard login and password pair does not work, perhaps some wizard (who set up and connected the Internet) changed the login information and rewrote it somewhere on the card. Try to remember where the data might be recorded. This is done for security reasons.

Almost all pests know the standard router admin data. If they got into the network somehow, for example, by guessing the password, they will have full access to the entire device. In this case, you will have to do a complete hard reset.

Factory reset

If the used router and the admin panel data are unknown and none of the above helps, then you will have to do a hard reset.

This is done by pressing the button on the rear panel for several seconds (10-15 seconds). If the button is recessed into the housing (to protect against unwanted reset), you will need a thin object (a paper clip works best). After this, the admin panel and all data will be restored to the original factory settings. We take the information from the sticker on the device itself, and now getting into the control panel of the Keenetic router will not be difficult. Enter the address, enter the administrator information and you're done.

Preliminary work

First of all, you need to unpack and connect the 4G router to the network. There is nothing complicated about this: we connect the power cord to the connector on the rear panel, turn it on (electrical), insert the modem into the port on the side, connect the computer to the router using the cord and press the power button. After this, the indicator lights should light up, by which we can understand: the router has seen the device connected to it and is spreading the Wi-Fi signal.

In addition, you need to make sure that your PC is ready to work on the new Internet network. To do this, open the Network and Sharing Center (right-click on the network icon next to the volume icon in the lower right corner of the screen). Next, we need to go to the adapter settings page (on the right), open the properties of the current connection that has already caught the device (by right-clicking) and in them also open the properties of versions 4 and 6 of Internet protocols. Most likely you are using the first one, but to be sure, you should set up automatic acquisition of the provider’s IP and DNS addresses for both. After you do this, open your browser - we will move on.

Internet setup

When connecting for the first time, the router will need to be configured to work on the Internet:

  1. Make sure your service provider's modem is connected to the router's WAN port.
  2. Using a browser, go to the admin panel, enter the address my.keenetic.net or 192.168.1.1 (for all Zyxel devices).
  3. Enter the standard administrator name and password.
  4. We see a welcome window where we are asked to go through a quick setup. We agree.
  5. Next we see a window with registration of MAC addresses. If your provider does not require this, then select the item “My provider does not register MAC addresses.”
  6. After this we see the configuration of IP addresses. Select "Automatic". It is also possible to set multiple DNS addresses manually.
  7. If you received a static address from your provider, you will need to select the “Manual” setting and enter this address.
  8. Then we see the item “Login and password for Internet access”. We skip this if the provider did not provide such data.
  9. The next item will prompt you to select the type of Internet connection. It depends on your provider. Choose the one he requires. New router models automatically detect settings.

About Zyxel Keenetic

The Zixel company is well known in the IT environment for the quality and uninterrupted operation of its devices, and the Kinetic iii router is no exception. This router is specially designed to work with mobile USB modems. But still, on its rear panel you will find the usual slot for installing a LAN cable and 5 additional ports for a wired connection to a PC. As well as a USB port on the side and front panel status indicators. This is exactly what we need to set up an Internet connection. So, how do you get online?

Setting up a 3G/4G modem

Some Zyxel router models support 3G/4G modems. Keenetic works with most popular wireless modem models. You can find out whether your model is supported on the manufacturer’s official website or by going to the control panel. If supported, you will see the corresponding item.

So, to set up a connection via a 3G/4G modem:

  1. We connect the modem to the USB connector of the router.
  2. Go to the router settings https://my.keenetic.net/ (or you can use ip 192.168.1.1)
  3. In the main menu, select “3G/4G Modem”.
  4. Here we see all the main settings. Make sure the Enable checkbox is active.
  5. “Check Internet availability” – set the item to automatic mode.
  6. If you wish, you can set the work schedule and mode. For example, so that the wireless modem works only when the main cable provider does not have Internet. A very convenient feature that provides uninterrupted access to the Internet.
  7. “Provider name” can be changed at your discretion, for example, “Net”.

Connecting and setting up wireless modems to the router:

Setting up wi-fi

You can set up a wireless network in several steps:

  1. First, log into the Kinetic router https://my.keenetic.net/ (or you can use ip 192.168.1.1)
  2. We follow the route: “Home page” - “Wi-Fi wireless network”. We see several points.
  3. Set the desired type of protection, network name and password. It is recommended to select WPA2-PSK and a password that is at least 8-12 characters long and contains letters and numbers.
  4. We set up the operating mode (constant or on a schedule, for example, only during daylight hours or on certain days).

Equipment, appearance, characteristics

To begin with, let us mention that the Keenetic Air data center is presented in two models. These are the first KN-1610 released and the subsequent KN-1611. The difference between them is the size of DDR2 class RAM (64 and 128 MB, respectively), Flash memory (16 versus 32 MB), and the number of LAN ports (increased from 4 to 5). The KN-1611 is a little heavier compared to its predecessor (if, of course, you can notice this for the weight of 236 and 248 grams). Declared support for the new device ends later (in July 2022 and January 2024, respectively, for the old and new revisions). The main difference is the provision of wireless communication technologies that the updated version of the router has, namely MU-MIMO, Airtime Fairness and Beamforming. The first of them increases throughput and reduces network latency by serving users on several streams simultaneously. The second, by dividing the volume of traffic over time, increases speed for fast clients. Beamforming focuses the wireless network signal towards the user. Very nice and modern bonuses for the router. The remaining characteristics of the two Keenetic Air router options are almost identical.

The equipment is pretty standard for Internet in the office. In the box you will find instructions, a power adapter (9 V, 0.85 A), a patch cord for connection and, in fact, the router itself.

The Keenetic Air KN-1610/1611 router looks like a white box with a gray top measuring 157 × 109 × 33 mm. There are two non-removable antennas on the back side, and one more is located on the side faces. Each has a gain of 5 dBi. Although they can be rotated in three planes, it is still recommended to set them in a vertical position. On the back you will see a reset button to default settings, a power connector, 4 (for KN-1610) or 5 (KN-1611) Ethernet ports, one of them is indicated in blue (that is, by default it serves as a WAN connector), and 4-position operating mode switch A/B/C/D.

On the front panel there are indicators for power, Internet network status, Wi-Fi 2.4/5 GHz, as well as a wireless network control button. At the bottom there is a sticker with a decoding of the designated modes, the Wi-Fi network name and password, default WAN MAC, login address via the web interface, as well as a service code and serial number. There is also a QR code for authorization using a mobile application, which partially duplicates the text information.

The Internet center is equipped with an MT7628N processor with a frequency of 580 MHz, supports DDNS, DHCP, GRE, IGMP, IPsec, IPv6, L2TP, NAT, OpenVPN, PPPoE, PPTP, UDP, UPnP protocols, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/a communication standards , 802.11n, 802.11r, 802.11v, Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), implements Beamforming, IPTV, MU-MIMO, WPS, MESH, traffic prioritization (QoS). Security features include guest access (without access to the home network and with the ability to limit speed), protection against DoS attacks thanks to the SPI firewall, parental controls with the SkyDNS cloud service, MAC address filtering, and the pre-installed Yandex Internet Filter application .DNS", built-in VPN server. KN-1610 can connect through a provider or private Wi-Fi hotspot, providing a connection with several providers simultaneously (main and backup).

Unfortunately, this router does not have a USB port. Configuration and management can be done through a mobile application for iOS and Android and through the KeenDNS service, which provides you with a domain name to connect from the Internet to the web configurator. Thanks to this format, you will be able to access the settings of your Internet center even if the IP address is gray. Operating conditions indicate a temperature range from 0 to + 40 ° C and humidity from 20 to 95% without condensation.

A wired Ethernet connection will actually provide a maximum speed of 95 Mbit per second. The AC1200 standard does not mean that you will get 1200 Mbps - it is just an ideal conditional total speed. In fact, the limit for a network with a frequency of 2.4 GHz will be 300 Mbit/s, and for 5 GHz - 867 Mbit/s.

Firmware update

The company supports its devices and releases new versions of software even for devices that are already 2-3 years old. You can update the firmware using the keenetic router web interface. This is made very convenient - updates are checked automatically. This is how you can refresh your old Kinetic Light. Usually, after updating the firmware, some bugs and problems are eliminated.

Let's look at the example of newer models:

  1. On the main page, go to “System Monitor”.
  2. Select the “About the system” section.
  3. Click on the “Update available” link.
  4. Next we see “Updates and components”, where we were offered to install new software.
  5. Click “Install update”. We wait a few minutes.
  6. The system will reboot and start running on the new firmware.
