In this article I will show you how to access the Keenetic router settings at my.keenetic.net or 192.168.1.1. We will also look at solutions to popular problems when you cannot enter the router settings, the password does not match, or an error appears when you try to open the web interface of the Keenetic Internet center.
This article will be written using the example of current versions of Keenetic routers, which are made in a white case and run on the new version of the KeeneticOS operating system. With a new and modern web interface. The instructions are suitable for the following models: Keenetic Start, 4G, Lite, Omni, DSL, City, Air, Extra, Duo, Speedster, Viva, Ultra, Giga, Runner 4G, Hero 4G. I have a Keenetic Viva router.
I bought it specifically in order to prepare several detailed instructions for setting up various functions. Well, we will start, of course, by logging into the web interface (to the settings page).

Login to the ZyXEL router settings
Each router comes with instructions and a driver. It is necessary so that your computer correctly identifies the device and knows how to handle it. Be sure to use it. Insert the disc into the PC drive and start the software installation. After it is installed, you should find an icon on the desktop to enter the device settings. You can also get here using a regular web browser (any). Let's consider a more universal configuration option using an Internet browser.
- Launch the browser installed on your computer;
- In the address entry window, write: “192.168.1.1”;
- You will see a form for entering your login and password. Enter the default login “Admin”;
- In most versions of ZyXEL Keenetic, the default password is “1234”.
But if the router was previously configured by another user or service worker, then it can be changed. Often, adjusters change the password to the router's serial number. If "1234" doesn't work, look at the number on the box and enter it in the password line. If it has a lot of characters, try using only the first or last 4. If none of the passwords work, try doing a factory reset.
Changing the default Keenetic Start password
For novice wifi router users, I recommend starting the Keenetic Start setup with a step-by-step wizard. In the first window you will be asked to change the web interface language to Russian.
Then set a password to access the administrator section.
If you find an old version of blue firmware on your router, then it will be more convenient for you to configure it using other instructions for Zyxel Keenetic.
Reset
If some settings have already been made on the router and they were made incorrectly, as a result of which the device does not work correctly, you can return the factory default settings. To do this, find the “Reset” button on the back panel. It is small and deeply recessed into the body. To press it, you will need some thin object - for example, a paper clip or a needle. Insert the needle into the hole, press the button and hold for 10 seconds. All indicators on the front panel should go out and then light up again. The settings have been reset.
You can do the same thing if you have lost or forgotten your password, or bought a used router and don’t know the password.
Remember that if you perform a factory reset, you will have to reconfigure all settings manually or through the Quick Setup Wizard.

How to connect a ZyXEL Keenetic Start router
The router has a standard interface similar to devices from other manufacturers. On the rear panel there is a blue WAN port for connecting to the Internet, four LAN ports, a power supply connector, power and reset buttons.
We connect the cable coming from the Internet provider or ADSL modem to the WAN port. We connect one of the LAN ports with the yellow patch cord that comes with the router to the network card of your PC. We connect the power supply cord, and the unit itself to a 220V network. Turn on the router using the button on the rear panel. The indicators on its front panel should light up.
Indication
On the front panel of ZyXEL Keenetic Start there are LED indicators that allow you to monitor the operation of the router.
- The Power indicator shows that the power is on
- Port LEDs 0 through 4 show port activity. 0 is WAN port, 1-4 are LAN ports
- The Wi-Fi indicator is responsible for wireless network activity
- The Internet connection indicator in the form of a globe shows whether there is a network connection at the moment
- The last indicator shows whether any device is currently connected to the router’s USB port, if such a port is present in your model
When you turn on the router, at least the power, WAN port, and one of the LAN ports indicators should light up. If none of the lights are on, check to see if the power button on the back of your device is disabled. If the indicators are lit, you can proceed to setup.
Configuring the Keenetic router to connect to the Internet
The next few steps are devoted to choosing the operating mode and type of Internet connection. First of all, let’s choose in what capacity Keenetic Start will be used: as a main router, or a signal amplifier or wifi adapter.
If the second and third options, then go to the “Additional modes” section and select the one you need. I will tell you more about them separately, but now we will configure Keenetic Start as the main router, so we select “Ethernet”
Next, you need to select the service you want to configure - Internet or IP television. Let's choose the first one.
After this, we decide whether we need to leave the MAC address of the router or clone it from the computer. You need to check this with your provider (some Internet service providers bind the device via MAC, prohibiting others from accessing the network), but to avoid unnecessary conversations, I usually copy it from the main PC, which was previously connected via cable.

Now the most important thing is to choose the right IP parameters for connecting to the Internet. The choice is made from three types:
- Automatic - for all types
- Manual - for Static IP
- Without IP address - PPPoE
Static IP
If your Internet connection type is “Static IP”, then select it in the list and then enter the IP address, mask and gateway that your provider provided to you.
For all others, select “Automatic” and get to the page for selecting a specific type.
Setting up Keenetic for Rostelecom Internet subscribers - PPPoE
If you are a Rostelecom subscriber, you will need to select the type of Internet connection PPPoE. It is also used by some other suppliers, please check in your contract. Here you will need to enter your username and password to connect to the Internet.
How to connect Keenetic to the Internet from Beeline - L2TP/PPTP
L2TP is used even less frequently, but, oddly enough, this is what Beeline uses. If this is your case, then in addition to your login and password, you also need to enter the VPN server address.
DHCP (Dynamic IP) Settings
Most providers use regular DHCP or Dynamic IP to connect the router to the Internet. In this type, you do not need to manually register anything and Keenetic setup occurs automatically. If, like me, this is what you use, then click “No password” and wait for the router to connect.
Next, you can immediately activate network protection against cyber threats and limit access to unwanted resources using the Yandex DNS or AdGuard DNS services
And finally, at the final step, information about the WiFi network will be displayed - unfortunately, it cannot be configured here, so we exit the wizard and go to the main menu.
Setting up the Keenetic WiFi network
In order to set the necessary parameters for a WiFi connection on the Keenetic Start router, you need to go to the “Home Network” section. Here we can:
- Activate wireless signal
- Set network name
- Change password
- Assign an encryption type - the most secure one is used by default, so I recommend leaving it (WPA2-PSK)
If you click on the “Advanced settings” link, configurations such as selecting a channel, activating the WPS function, changing the signal strength and increasing the repeater peak speed will open.
Read about these and other Keenetic Start settings in separate publications on our website.
Why a password?
A combination of letters and numbers helps limit access to the router. The procedure is necessary to preserve traffic and confidentiality. This is especially true for devices with built-in Wi-Fi.
If a user notices a decrease in speed, this may be a sign of an outside connection to your network. Flashing lights without using traffic indicates that someone else is using the equipment unfairly.
Wi-Fi without proper encryption can become a direct channel to access information on your computer. An experienced hacker can easily take advantage of this loophole and steal the data he needs or find out secrets that are important to you. To prevent this from happening, you need to take certain protective measures.
Any connected user accesses the network under your IP address. If he commits any illegal actions, law enforcement will have claims against the owner of the device.
A reliable combination will protect you from such problems.
Correct connection of the router
Connecting a ZyXEL router is quite simple. All ports are labeled on the back panel of the case.
- To connect your computer to the router using a cable, they are marked in yellow;
- To connect the Internet cable, use the blue port;
- Insert the power cable into the port between the “Power” button and the Internet cable port;
- The reset button is located near the antenna.
Rear panel of the ZyXEL Keenetic router case
The button layout may vary slightly depending on the model. But they are always signed. So you won't get confused. When all wires are connected, press the power button.
Setting up a PPPoE connection (Rostelecom, Dom.ru)
In the router interface, you need to select the “ Internet ” tab on the left; in the list that opens, select “ Authorization ”
- Internet Access Protocol : PPPoE
- Username : Your login according to the agreement
- Password: Your password according to the agreement
- Save the settings with the “Apply” button.
Troubleshooting
If the router is not working correctly, errors occur regularly and failures can be tracked in the system message log. It is located on the "System" page.
It will be difficult for an ordinary user without special knowledge to understand these messages, however, information from the log may be required when contacting the provider's technical support service.
The latest firmware versions provide the ability to diagnose problems with the router via the web interface. If you go to the “Diagnostics” tab on the “System” page and click the “Start Debugging” button, the router will conduct an extended self-diagnosis and write the data to a file that can be saved to your computer and sent to technical support.
NAT when automatically obtaining an IP address (DHCP)
- At the bottom of the page, select the Internet
- In the window that appears, click on Broadband connection (ISP)
- In the Configure IP settings , select Automatic
- In the MTU Size , enter 1400
- After filling out these fields, click the Apply .
Quick Internet setup
When you enter the password and the device is ready to set up the Internet, you will see a window in which the wizard prompts you to start this process.
- Select the "Quick Setup" button;
Quick Internet setup in ZyXEL Keenetic - Next, the wizard will check the cable connections and network configuration;
- In the next window, select “Does not register MAC” or specify the appropriate option;
- Setting up an IP address is also carried out based on whether you have a dedicated one or use a shared address. If there is no selection, leave the value “Automatic”;
Setting up an IP address in ZyXEL Keenetic - If necessary, set the DNS server;
- If the IP is static, select “IP Settings” and enter all the relevant data in the fields;
- Enter the password and login for your network account and click the “Next” button;
- Select your connection type.
If you have a regular home connection, you can leave most fields at their default value (if you don't know what to enter). In case of network failure or incorrect settings, contact your provider and ask for help. Your Internet connection agreement should contain setup instructions or the local address where it is located.
Changing the factory password
For security reasons, it is recommended to change the factory password. Default: Login admin, password 1234. In the router interface, you need to go to the “ System ” tab, then password. In the New Password , enter a new password. It must be repeated in the next field. Next, save the settings by clicking the “ Apply ” button.
