How to set up Samsung Pay, install and connect on your phone

The technical process does not stand still. Everything is developing, including the banking sector and payment systems.

What is Samsung Pay

Samsung Pay is a contactless payment service provided by an application and similar to what is available on the iPhone. By linking a bank card to your smartphone, you can:

• pay for purchases by phone in stores;
• pay for travel;
• pay in online stores;
• transfer money to other users;
• replenish electronic wallets;
• store means of payment, discount and bonus cards, travel cards, coupons, etc.

The payment service operates in more than 80 countries, including Russia. All major banks are Samsung partners and issue plastic cards compatible with the application.

How Samsung Pay works

It became possible to turn a smartphone into a virtual wallet thanks to the NFC chip built into the phone. The peculiarity of the technology is the fast, almost instantaneous establishment of communication and the ability to transmit small data packets over a limited distance (up to 10 cm).

This chip is equipped with a special antenna located on the back of the device. With its help, NFC generates a magnetic field. Exactly the same as the receiver. When both fields are within each other's coverage area, data transfer is possible, including contactless payment.

Also, some Samsung phones have another chip - MST. The technology is patented and is installed only on branded phones. The point is that not every store has a receiver, in our case a terminal with an NFC chip. In this case, the gadget is also capable of transmitting data by emitting the magnetic strip of a bank card, also at a distance of up to 10 cm.

Virtual card

You can also register a virtual card in the Samsung Pay software. The registration principle is similar to the process for standard bank cards, but there are some differences.

Firstly, the payment instrument details are generated by the vendor, without user participation. This guarantees a high level of reliability of the generated data.

Secondly , the maintenance of such a card is completely outsourced. That is, the user no longer needs to change it or contact representatives of the financial institution in case of any problems.

Thirdly, a virtual payment instrument will allow the client to secure their payments on the global network. If he suspects that he has been hacked, just go to the Samsung Pay program and block the current virtual card.

Why is Samsung Pay safe?

Particular attention is paid to the issue of security of the application related to banking operations and storage of payment data. Now it can be argued that Samsung Pay is superior to any similar service in this matter because:

1. There is biometric identification. Before activating the application, the system requests a fingerprint or an iris scanner.
2. Additional PIN code entry. If the purchase amount exceeds 1000 rubles, the system will ask you to additionally enter a numeric code known only to the owner of the device.
3. A separate chip for storing payment card data. Unlike analogues, payment instrument data is not transferred to company servers or cloud storage. Everything is inside the phone.
4. Blocking access to the application when installing suspicious software. One of the features of Samsung Knox. It turns on if the device owner installs a malicious program, gains Root rights, or flashes the phone.

Do I need internet for Samsung Pay?

Also, given the proliferation of skimmers and fraud on the part of unscrupulous sellers, the payment terminal is provided with encrypted card data, and a random numerical generation is indicated on the receipt. Thus, neither the skimmer nor the seller will be able to take possession of the real details of the payment instrument.

What devices does Samsung Pay support?

As of December 2022, you can install Samsung Pay on Samsung:

• Galaxy S – from 6 and newer. Also Edge series from 6;
• Note – from 8 and above. Additionally, the chip is present in Note 5;
• Series J – 4+, 5, 6+, 7 and newer;
• Line A – 3, 5, 6, 6+, 7, 8, 8+, 9 and newer.

Additionally, you can install Samsung Pay in branded watches – Gear Sport, Gear S3 (classic and frontier) and Galaxy Watch.

Can I install Samsung Pay on another phone?

The application only works on branded phones and watches equipped with NFC or MST sensors. It will not work on other devices running Android or iOS due to company security policy.

Which phones have this feature?

To use a useful application from Samsung, you need to decide on the model of your gadget. So, since 2016, the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge models have only NFC payments. But other Galaxy modifications will allow you to use magnetic data transmission. A little later we will tell you how to pay with a Samsung phone instead of a Sberbank card, but for now, study the list of acceptable devices:

• S7 and S7 Edge;
• Note 5;
• S6 Edge+;
• A5;
• A7;
• S6 and S6 Edge.

What cards does Samsung Pay support?

To use contactless payments, you need to link a payment instrument to the application. For the card to work through Samsung Pay, it must:

• have a contactless chip;
• it must have a positive balance;
• be registered to an adult;
• use international transfers by Visa or MasterCard;
• be released by a service partner.

The last point is worth dwelling on in more detail. Not all cards that meet the previous criteria can be linked to the service. Samsung Pay currently works with:

• banks - Sberbank, Alfa-Bank, VTB24, Raiffeisen, Tinkoff, Russian Standard, Otkritie, Rocketbank, Tochka, Bank St. Petersburg, MDM Bank;
• electronic wallets – Yandex Money, Qiwi Wallet;
• mobile operators - MTS, Beeline, Megafon, Tele2;

Note! The contactless service from Samsung is the only one that supports domestic Russian MIR cards (only from Otkritie Bank and Rosselkhozbank). Neither Google Pay nor Apple Pay supports them.

What should I do to deactivate the product?

If necessary, the user can delete any card details added by Samsung Pay. Below is a detailed description of how to remove a card from Samsung Pay:

1. Log in to the payment system.
2. Click on Wallet and go to the Credit/Debit tab.
3. Select the card you want to delete.
4. Go to "Advanced Options".
5. Click "Delete Card", then enter the reason for deactivating the card.
6. Finally, confirm your actions and enter the set PIN code.

At the end of the procedure, the plastic card itself will be active.

If you want to block the entire card, you can do this on the website of the bank or organization that issued the plastic.

How to start using Samsung Pay on your smartphone

Most mobile devices with NFC come with the app pre-installed. But before you connect Samsung Pay, you need to create a Samsung account.

How to add or remove a card to Samsung Pay?

You will need it later to connect to the system:

1. Open "Settings".
2. "Accounts" section.
3. "Add an account."
4. Click on “Samsung account”.
5. Fill in the form.
6. Confirm your registration by clicking on the link in your email.

Important! Before you set up Samsung Pay, after registering your account, you need to check your device for updates. Otherwise, service errors may occur.

Further:

1. Launch the application.
2. Enable biometric identification (if appropriate scanners are available).
3. Enter a numeric access code to pay for purchases over 1000 rubles.
4. Next, click on the “Add” button.
5. Take a photo of the card or enter data manually.
6. Click “Next”, read the user agreement and click “Accept”.
7. Receive an SMS from the issuing bank, enter and send the code.

At the end, the service will ask you to put an electronic signature (just draw it with your finger on the screen). This completes the Samsung Pay setup. If the card is not added to the application interface within 10 minutes, you should check again whether the bank and the specific payment instrument are supported by the service or not. If yes, you should contact the issuer's support service.

How to set up quick access

To quickly activate the application at the checkout, the settings provide quick access. When configured, it is activated automatically. It can be seen on the lock screen. If for some reason this does not happen, you need to:

1. Log in to the application.
2. Go to "Settings".
3. "Quick Access" section.
4. Choose from three options.

Samsung Pay offers to install quick access to:

• lock screen;
• on the main screen;
• off screen.

All you have to do is activate or, conversely, deactivate the sliders of the proposed solutions.

Setup process

Many gadgets from Samsung are already equipped with the payment service of the same name. And if it is still missing, you can download Samsung Pay apk for free from the Play Market application store.

Preparation and downloading

For this purpose, perform the following actions:

• go to the search line;
• enter the name of the payment service;
• Select an application from the list that appears.

After installing the service, you will have to configure it a little and add your bank cards. The system interface is simple and clear; there are no difficulties in working with it.

Once you are able to download the application, follow these steps to configure it:

1. by launching the program, log in to Samsung through your account (Samsung Pay account), agree to the terms proposed for the user;
2. It is impossible to use payment services without blocking. This feature is provided to reliably protect your personal data from intruders. You need to decide on the unlocking method, for which you should choose one of the options - entering a password, scanning the retina, or using the touch apk scanner for Samsung Pay;
3. Next, create a PIN code intended for the payment application. They use it exclusively to activate the service; it must be different from the password chosen to block the mobile device;
4. Bank card details are entered manually using a special key in the application. The second option for entering information is to scan the card with your phone camera;
5. an SMS notification with a password will be sent to the gadget number, which is entered into a special field that appears on the smartphone display;
6. All that remains is to complete the final setup step - enter your personal signature.

In ten minutes, the bank card will go through the registration process in the system, you will be able to quickly launch the service to make a contactless payment.

How to install on Galaxy Watch

You can also set up contactless payment for branded watches. The wrist gadget is not yet independent and you can set up Samsung Pay only using a phone with an already working application.

To connect Galaxy Watch you need:

1. Log in to your Samsung account on your watch (“Settings”, section “Accounts”).
2. Download Galaxy Wearable (formerly Samsung Gear) to your phone.
3. Pair with the watch.
4. In the same application, go to the “Payment” section.
5. Click "Open Samsung Pay".
6. Go to “Add card”.
7. Check the box next to the linked payment instrument or connect a new one.
8. Check the card binding on the watch.

Although the watch and smartphone will have one account. You need to add cards linked to your phone manually by checking the box next to the desired payment method.

Note! Before you start setting up the application, you need to set a PIN code for locking the screen of your wrist gadget.

How to install on Gear S2

You can also connect any smartwatch model with NFC to Samsung Pay using the Galaxy Wearable application. The instructions will be similar. The only thing worth adding is how to enable the contactless chip on the watch:

1. Go to "Settings".
2. Section "Connections".
3. Move the slider to the working position.

Important! Before setting up a payment service, be sure to check for updates not only on your phone, but also on your watch.

Installation

After downloading the application to Xiaomi, S8 or another Android version no lower than version 8, install the software, for which:

• find its icon on the display;
• launch the Samsung Pay application;
• confirm your account login or create one if you don’t have one;
• determine the authorization option - fingerprint, PIN code, retinal scan;
• link your payment card.

How to pay using Samsung Pay in online stores and apps

By linking bank cards to the payment application, you can not only pay at the checkout, but also make purchases on the Internet. Most online stores offer payment via Samsung Pay. To do this you need:

1. In payment methods, select “Pay via Samsung Pay”.
2. If necessary, log in to your Samsung account (usually required when shopping through a computer).
3. The payment application will ask you to confirm the payment. To do this, simply enter your PIN code or use the established identification method.

How does MST work in Samsung Pay?

After this, all that remains is to confirm the payment on the site’s web page. Payment for applications and games on mobile platforms is carried out in a similar way.

How to pay?

Detailed instructions:

1. Launch Samsung Pay. You can do this by swiping your finger across the screen from bottom to top.
2. In the application, select a card if you have several of them, and the default is not the one you want to pay with at the moment.
3. Use your authentication security tool - fingerprint scanner, iris scanner or pin code.
4. Place the back of the device on the reader and wait for payment confirmation.

Do you need an internet connection to use Samsung Pay?

You do not need to connect to the Internet to pay for purchases through Samsung Pay. As mentioned above, all card data is stored inside the device in a special chip. To use bank details, the device does not need to request information from cloud storage or remote servers, so no Internet connection is required.

Note! Connection is required when linking bank cards.

What is Samsung Pay?

The service is electronic payments made through the company’s mobile devices. Most smartphones and tablets support this option.

The service appeared in August 2015, after the Korean manufacturer bought the small company LoopPay in February.

She developed and implemented a new opportunity for the banking industry. The novelty is as follows.

The program creates a virtual magnetic stripe, which is used on electronic payment instruments when paying at the terminal.

The technology is called Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST). It creates an emulation of a magnetic field, as a result of which the terminal accepts this virtual field as a magnetic stripe and performs a read operation.

MST is completely connected to another NFC technology. Translated from English it means “near field communication”. It appeared in 2004, but has not yet received proper distribution.

Thanks to the Samsung Pay service, NFC has become more popular, since contactless payment only works when NFC is turned on. The range is no more than 8 centimeters, which is the optimal value for paying from your phone.

Important! To launch Samsung Pay on a mobile device, the user needs to swipe up on the communicator’s sensor.

After the option began to be actively used in the Russian Federation, the vendor organized an advertising campaign in support of its new technology.

Many services and goods were much cheaper when paid through Samsung Pay.

For example, travel on the Moscow metro was two times cheaper if the client paid through contactless payment technology.

Which phones support Samsung Pay?

The contactless payment function is not supported by all Samsung smartphones. Earlier versions do not have this feature.

The list of the most popular models is as follows:

• Galaxy S8;
• Galaxy S7;
• Galaxy S6, but there are some limitations;
• Galaxy A3;
• Galaxy S9;
• Galaxy A5.

The S6 series does not have built-in MST technology, which means that models in this category can only work with modern electronic payment devices.

What errors can occur when connecting and how to solve them

From time to time, users have problems using Samsung Pay. Moreover, they can occur both after the first setup and during constant use. Frequently encountered:

1. Error when linking the card. This usually means that the card or issuing bank is not supported by the service, or the payment instrument has a zero balance.
2. The application does not start or does not respond to identification. If the battery charge is less than 15%, Samsung Pay will not start. The second case is usually solved by rebooting the gadget.
3. No signal. This message can be seen when paying for purchases. This usually means that the payment terminal has lost connection with the bank. The problem must be resolved by the seller.

Since most phones are purchased second-hand, setup problems may be related to the performance of the NFC chip itself. You can find out for sure whether the module is working or not at the service center, or try transferring data via NFS to another phone.
