What is xlsx format? Let's start with the fact that everything is simple. xlsx files are tables. This extension is used to store files primarily created in the Excel program environment. This application, in turn, is part of Microsoft's line of standard Office products.
Important! Xlsx files are created by Microsoft Excel starting from version 2007.
However, you can open this type of file in various ways, not only using standard programs. Below we will look at all possible launch options for this file type.
How to open an XLSX file on your computer
Programs for launching xls files

Nowadays, there are programs that quickly open such extensions. Install them on your device to be able to work comfortably.
LibreOffice
This is a program for reading xls files, which is distinguished by the presence of the necessary sources for opening spreadsheets. Comfortable work with text and presentations awaits you (Figure 2).

MS Office Excel
If you don’t know how to open xls format, this option will do. A standard application that comes with the Microsoft Word package. Working with tables is simple, so any user can understand the specifics of the operations (Figure 3). You can create graphs and charts, reports and other documents.

DocuFreezer

Apache OpenOffice Calc
This application is analogous to the Microsoft Office package. Unlike previous software, in Apache Open Office Calc the xlsx extension is not considered the main one - you will not be able to create and save a workbook using the utility. User action steps:
- download, install and run the program;
- click on the “Spreadsheet” item;
- a separate working window will open on the monitor, at the top of which there is a horizontal standard menu of functions - click “File”, then “Open”;
- find the place where the desired document is located (you can also use hot keys, as in the previous instructions);
- Select the name and click “Open”.
Attention! An alternative way to launch is to launch the application, press “Ctrl” and “O” at the same time, select the location where the desired document is saved, and press the launch button. Both options are suitable - the user can choose either one.
How to open xls file on android
It's easy to figure out how to open an xls file on Android if you know what you need for this. In this case, you need to open documents using special programs. They can be downloaded on the Internet for free. Installation will take literally two minutes.
MS Office
Designed to work with this format. You will have access to all the functionality to create any charts. There are quite a lot of tools in this development.
Quickoffice
If you are wondering which program to open the xls file, this option is suitable. This is an application that was created for Android. You will edit, create, and view tables. There are enough tools, the menu is clear and accessible. Convenient option for daily use (Figure 5).

Mapping error
The operating system is configured to “remember” programs for opening different types of files. This is called "matching". When you try to open a file with an unfamiliar extension, you must specify which program to use. Information about this is recorded. If at some point the mapping for Excel workbooks was broken, the OS simply will not understand which program to open them in. To correct the situation, do the following:
- Go to Settings. The easiest way to do this is through a search, simply by typing a query. For Windows 7 and earlier, use the Start button.
- Go to the "Applications" section.
- Next, click on the “Default Applications” link.
- Click “Select standard applications for file types” for Windows 10 and “Assign a program to open files of this type” for 7.
- At the end of the list, find the extensions “xsl”, “xsls”, “xslt”, “xsltm”, etc. Everything must start with xsl.
- Check what program you use to open them. If it is configured incorrectly, click on the application or “plus” and select Excel in the standard application selection window. This must be done for each extension separately.
- If Excel does not appear in the selection list, click the “Browse” button.
- In the Program files folder, look for the “Microsoft office” folder.
- Next, go to the “Office№” folder, where № is your version number. For example, 12 or 15.
- You need the EXCEL.exe executable file. Sometimes it is labeled as an "application".
- Double click on the shortcut and the mapping will be created.
How to change xls format to xlsx
A file with the XLSX extension takes up less space, so it is recommended to use it. But if you need to convert a document, do the following:
- open it in XLS format;
- click on the button located on the top left side;
- hover your mouse over “Save As,” or rather, over the arrow next to the phrase;
- Select the option called Excel Workbook.
If you click, a special window will open, which also offers different formats for saving the dock. But don't forget to rename it, because in the future it will be difficult to distinguish the options from each other.
Method 3: Zoho Sheet
Less popular, but not inferior in terms of functionality to the ones discussed above, which can be used both to solve the article mentioned in the title, and for more complex tasks related not only to working with standard office documents.
Go to Zoho Sheet online service
- Once on the main page of the website, use the “Check out the features for free” button.
- Complete the mandatory registration procedure. For this:
- Enter your email address or log in through your existing Google, Facebook, Office 365 account. Accept the terms of use by checking the second checkbox, and optionally agree to receive advertising mailings (first checkbox).
- Review the updated privacy policy and click to confirm “I understand. Continue".
- Confirm your location or refuse this by clicking on the “Remind me later” link.
- After successfully registering and/or logging into Zoho, explore the features it offers by scrolling through the welcome screens, or simply close them.
- Upload the XLS file you want to open to the service. For this:
- Click on the New Spreadsheet item.
In the empty document that opens, call the “File” menu and sequentially go to “Import” - “From computer/URL address”. - Use the "Select a file or drag it here" link.
- Find and “Open” it using “Explorer”.
- Place the checkbox next to the “Import as a new spreadsheet” option, confirm “Import”
and your desire to “Open” an Excel workbook
- The selected document will be opened in the editor built into the service, the interface of which is in many ways similar to that of Google Sheets, and even a little more tools are available for working here. They are all located on the top panel and in the following tabs:
- "File";
"Edit"; - "View";
- "Insert";
- "Format";
- "Data";
- "Tools";
- "Functions".
- After you make the necessary changes to the e-book, save it to your PC. To do this, call the “File” menu, select “Download as” and specify the desired format.
Note: An alternative, simpler and faster option for loading a table into Zoho Sheet is to move it to the browser window and then confirm the import.
The Zoho Sheet online service will certainly be of interest to those who, for some reason, do not want to use products from Microsoft and Google corporations.
Open xls file online
You can launch a similar format online. For this purpose, special services have been created that are available to everyone.
Yandex Disk
