How to disable screen falling asleep in Android applications

On many Android smartphones and tablets, the screen turns off after 30 seconds of user inactivity. As a rule, this is the best option in which you can comfortably use the device and save its battery power. But there are times when you need to disable sleep mode while an application is running. Since this cannot be done using standard Android tools, we will tell you how to implement this in other ways.

What it is?

Even after closing, many applications continue to work offline. This causes the device to freeze, slow down the work process, and even cause the case to heat up. All this negatively affects the operation of the smartphone and in the future can lead to unpleasant consequences that cannot be solved without the help of a specialist. However, difficulties can be prevented. For example, optimize the operation of the device by closing all applications yourself.

In most modern smartphones, the battery will be optimized automatically by default. Not surprisingly, this causes apps that are running in the background to start throwing errors.

If the operation of a navigator or instant messenger is mandatory for the device owner, then it is recommended to open the settings and block automatic optimization of their performance.

This is done as follows:

  1. Go to the settings menu.
  2. Go to the “applications” tab.
  3. Go to the menu (key with three dots).
  4. Select the “special access” mode.
  5. Click on the “Optimize Battery Usage” button.

After this, you need to select the desired application from the list and make sure that it is no longer subject to automatic optimization. In this section you can also set a ban on system shutdown of unused software. You can also send the necessary unnecessary programs “to sleep mode” and remove any established restrictions.

Why does the mobile phone screen go blank?

As you know, the function of automatically turning off the phone screen (the so-called “sleep mode”) existed even before the advent of the first smartphones. The main reason for its introduction is the need to preserve the discharge of the battery, which the working screen actively discharges.

Security considerations were added to this when, along with the display turning off, the phone began to lock up and turn off. This made it possible to avoid the influence of intruders and prevent both reading information from the screen and interfering with the functionality of the device.

However, there are various ways to ensure that your smartphone does not go dark, as well as to increase its operating time. Let's figure out how to do this.

Android phone discharges quickly, what is the main reason?

Let's immediately note that the battery sometimes drains quite quickly just a few hours after you buy the smartphone. But, the most interesting thing is that some users say: - the battery discharges 30 minutes after purchasing the phone. There's not even anything to say here. But the reason for the disappearance of energy in different models can be completely different.

If your gadget is brand new, but it runs out of battery power quite quickly, the following reasons may be to blame:

  1. The OS of your Android is not compatible with its components;
  2. The smartphone battery has low energy capacity;
  3. The gadget's CPU is not designed for gaming programs;
  4. The gadget has a very large screen, which is incompatible with the chipset of this phone.

It is impossible to argue with such reasons. Of course, it is possible to flash the phone for another OS. But quite often this only makes the situation worse. Also, you can't do anything with the CPU. Because of this, when you start playing, the smartphone starts to heat up and the battery quickly runs out.

Let's give the name of powerful chipsets that are much more efficient than their counterparts - Huawei, Qualcomm, Samsung.

But when your phone battery initially functioned at a normal level, and then began to run out quite unexpectedly quickly - a few months or a year after purchase. So, the reasons for the rapid discharge are most likely completely different:

  1. One of the installed programs takes up too much battery power;
  2. There is a virus on the phone;
  3. The subscriber turned the screen brightness to maximum;
  4. The user turns on the GPS navigator quite often;
  5. A person quite often reboots his gadget.

These factors of rapid loss of energy can be corrected. Therefore, now we will begin to analyze them in more detail.

Mobile applications that prohibit turning off the phone screen

There are also a number of mobile applications that allow you to prevent your phone screen from going dark.

Among them we note the following:

Application:Description:
"Keep Screen On"There are several handy options here, including a proximity sensor, per-app settings, and the ability to keep the screen on while the device is charging. In general, its functionality is inferior to the applications described below, but due to its free nature it can be an excellent choice.
"Stay Alive"offers an impressive number of free options, as well as additional features for a fee. For free, you can leave the screen on indefinitely, set screen-off settings for an individual app, and turn off an app if the battery reaches a certain level of drain. The features of solid black, an alternative lock screen when pressed, automatic start on boot and other features are available for a fee.
"Wakey"does all the work of keeping the screen on for free. You simply tap the light bulb inside the app and the screen doesn't go dark until you want it to. The free version of the program also has a timer and dimming option. The paid version has auto shutdown, keeping the screen on while charging, and an option to wake up the processor.

In general, the listed applications are a good alternative that allow you to ensure that your smartphone’s display does not turn off for a long time.

How to prevent the screen from turning off when charging

Is hibernation not enough for your purposes? On Android, you can turn off the mode in which the screen will not turn off while charging. In this mode, you can use your phone as a night light.

To activate this mode, you need to go to Settings > For developers (if there is no such item, look for “How to enter developer mode on Android”) and check the “Keep the screen on” checkbox.

Now, when connected to a charger, the Android device's screen will be always on (but can also be turned off by pressing the power button).

Optimizing battery performance

So how does Android regulate the power saving process? Devices can operate in one of three directions:

  • no restrictions on full power (the charge is not saved and is quickly “eaten up”);
  • moderate (by reducing brightness, disabling background work and limiting CPU speed, you can save energy for 10 hours);
  • maximum energy saving (due to extreme restrictions on CPU functions and data transfer, you can increase the life time of the smartphone without recharging up to 131 hours).

But there are also “manual” methods for optimizing the battery. To save battery, you can:

  1. Choose fast charging, which will reduce the time it takes to fill the battery with energy. Activation occurs along the path Settings -> Optimization -> Battery. Next, in the upper corner, select “Advanced settings” and “Fast charging”.
  2. Dig into the notification settings in the optimization menu section. Here you can turn off notifications from programs that have not been used for more than 3 days, as well as those that consume the maximum amount of charge.
  3. The “Power Consumption Monitoring” function allows you to analyze which programs consume more power than others and, if necessary, adjust the situation.

The biggest way to save battery is by putting applications into hibernation or completely disabling software that you rarely use.

Method 1. Xposed Module
Method 2. Applications

First, let's decide why we might need to disable the screen timeout, because excess screen time leads to rapid battery drain? For example, you read an article in a browser or watch a video on YouTube, pause, and within a minute your device is already fast asleep. Or another option - you use your smartphone as a control panel or show slides. Thus, the most common cases where an always-on screen is required are:

  • reading e-books, documents, other text information;
  • viewing photo and video materials;
  • demonstrating something on a smartphone screen;
  • games whose gameplay does not require active actions;
  • work with GPS and mapping programs.

Some programs and games do an excellent job of this task on their own. Typically, many e-readers, video players and other applications have an option in the settings that prevents the device from falling asleep. But not all of them. In such cases, the easiest way is to set a longer screen timeout for the active mode in the system settings. But, you see, this is not so much inconvenient as it is irrational. Therefore, we will do things differently and use third-party tools to fine-tune the screen lock.

Method 1. Xposed module

This method requires ROOT rights on the device and the special Xposed Framework runtime installed. The module that we need to connect to the Xposed Framework is called Stay Awake – Keep On Screen . It makes it easy to disable screen lock on specific apps and return to previous screen timeout settings.

How to download and install Stay Awake – Keep On Screen:

  1. Launch the Xposed Installer application and select the "Download" section.

  2. Use the search to find the Stay Awake – Keep On Screen module.

  3. On the module page, go to the "Versions" tab and download its latest version.
  4. Install the module and reboot the device.
  5. Launch Xposed Installer again and go to the “Modules” section. Make sure you have activated the module by checking the box next to Stay Awake – Keep On Screen.

  6. Reboot your device.

After all these steps, you can use the enable/disable sleep mode feature at the system level for each application. It works very simply. To prevent the screen from turning off, simply hold down both volume buttons in any active application. You will see the message “Stay Awake Enable” - this means that the screen in the current application will be turned on permanently.

Using this module is convenient because it remembers in which applications you have disabled the screen timeout, and you can return everything back at any time by simply pressing the volume buttons. This function works even at the level of the native launcher.
