Sometimes you don’t want to pick up the phone when you get a call from an unfamiliar number, especially if it’s a landline number. What if there are again “profitable promotions” and “unique offers” from banks, beauty salons or online stores? Or even scammers?
But still, not answering such calls at all is not an option. This way you can miss an important call from a courier, from relatives or at work. What to do then?
The phone identification service will come to the rescue. It will allow you to know who is calling before answering the call. If the call is unwanted, you can safely ignore it.
Let's figure out how to install and configure caller ID on iPhones and iPads.
How to set up caller ID on iPhone
Phone detection is built into Apple mobile devices by default. But it cannot work on its own - to find out who is calling you, you will need a number database.
Such databases are added using third-party applications for iOS, which play the role of a telephone directory.
To activate Caller ID for iPhone or iPad, you will need to do the following:
- Install any reference application on your gadget.
- Launch the settings of your device, and then open the “Phone” section in it.
- Select the “Call blocking and identification” sub-item.
- In the “Allow these programs to block and provide subscriber ID” section, select the desired application (or several to combine their directories).
- Pull the switch until it turns green.
Now you can find out the numbers of banks, courier organizations, online stores and other services whose data was entered into your directory.
Some apps also have the ability to identify regular users' phones.
Nowadays there are quite a lot of reference apps for iOS. Some of them have a fairly extensive base, while others are not particularly accurate.
Let's look at the popular options, their pros and cons.
Installation and activation
Number identification is one of the capabilities of the Yandex application, which must be installed to solve our today's problem.
- From your smartphone, follow the link provided above and “Install” the application from the Google Play Store, and then “Open” it.
Click the “Get Started” button on the welcome screen.
Allow Yandex to access your device's location data or reject this request.
If you plan to use the Alice voice assistant, allow audio recording.
Important! Users from Ukraine, in whose territory the operation of Yandex services is prohibited, will be prompted to add a VPN configuration when they first launch the application - this must be done.
"Yandex"
“Yandex” is a free universal program for iOS, which, among other options, has a built-in caller ID for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
This is the functionality this application has:
- Internal messenger that supports chats, audio and video calls. Messages can be received both in the Yandex application and in Yandex.Browser.
- A news feed in which you can view events both in your region and throughout the country and even around the world. Here you can find news from healthcare, politics, science, culture and other areas.
- Weather forecast with detailed information - you can find out the humidity level, wind speed and atmospheric pressure, specifically in your area. You can view the forecast for the day, hourly, or for the entire week ahead.
- Information about the traffic situation. Can be displayed as push messages so that you immediately know that there is a traffic jam ahead or an accident has occurred and you need to change your route.
- Multifunctional search. You can search for information by voice, by photo, find data by QR codes, and also use the offline search option if you have a fairly popular request.
- Dynamics of exchange rates, stock prices, prices for precious metals and raw materials. Updated every hour.
- Data on discounts and promotions on goods in chain supermarkets. Here the Yandex application receives information from the popular Edadil service.
- Delivery of prepared food using the Yandex.Food service or products through the Yandex.Lavka service.
- Yandex.Ether service, where you will find over 5,000 films, cartoons and TV series, as well as videos from various bloggers.
- Voice assistant Alice, which can help you with many everyday tasks: voice the forecast, build a route, recommend a cafe, find any information on the Internet. You can also chat with her and discuss any interesting topic if you have nothing else to do. If you have smart devices and Yandex.Station in your home, Alice will help you manage them.
To determine who is calling you, use the “Automatic Caller Identification” function. For it to work, you need to enable the “Caller ID” item in the main menu of the application.
The Yandex directory contains more than 6,000,000 telephone numbers with detailed information about the organizations to which they belong. During a call, you will see either the company name or the purpose of the call on the screen - this information is based on reviews from other users.
“Automatic Caller ID” only works on iPhone or iPad with system version 11.0 and higher. On devices with an outdated version of iOS, the application will also launch, but it will not be possible to identify phones in it. After activation, notifications will be displayed for incoming calls if information about the number is in the service database.

To start identifying phones, you don't need to enable anything in the app itself. Just activate “2GIS” as a reference book in the settings of your gadget.
Sync.ME
Unlike previous options, in the Sync.ME application, caller ID for iPhone and iPad is the main function, and not just an addition.
This program was designed specifically to recognize calls from unfamiliar phones and warn you about annoying spammers.
Here are the options it contains:
- Determination of numbers of individuals using social networks - Facebook, Twitter;
- Adding photos to contacts from social networks;
- Search for phone numbers in the database - even if you missed a call, you can enter it into the application and find out all the information;
- Automatic detection of spam calls based on reviews of other people and Sync.ME’s own database;
- Synchronization of contacts with information from Facebook, Instagram, Twitter. You can copy your date of birth, name, photo and other data.
To identify phones, you can use both the application itself and the widget in the “Today” section.
The application itself is free, but it is possible to purchase a premium account with advanced functionality. In it you can merge contacts, create backups and generally manage your phone book conveniently.
At the moment, there are over 1,000,000,000 numbers in the Sync.ME directory, but this is an international database. There will be significantly fewer phones that are relevant for Russia.
The application requires iOS version 10.0 or later to work.
Kaspersky Who Calls
Kaspersky Who Calls is a free multifunctional caller ID for iPhone from Russian developers.
The application can do the following:
- Detect spam and calls from scammers. The spammer database is formed by the Who Calls user community.

- Check the database for any phones from which you or your friends have received calls.
- Add suspicious or unwanted numbers that you complain about to the database.
The main application is free, but it also has a monthly or annual subscription. It provides access to additional functionality of Kaspersky Who Calls. Subscription on special terms is available as part of the offer of telecom operators - it will help you get significant savings.
The application does not require an Internet connection to work. Also, you don't need to enter your own number or share your contact list - your personal data is safe.

"Who is calling"
Like the previous option, this is a Russian phone number identifier for iPhone or iPad. But, unlike Kaspersky Who Calls, the “Who Calls” application is initially paid.
It costs 379 rubles. The amount is written off one-time - there are no paid subscriptions for a month or a year.
The functionality of the application is quite standard:
- Identification of numbers during an incoming call with marks - “Bank”, “Spam”, “Call Center” and so on;
- Providing the name of the company if it is included in the database by other users;
- Displays the calling region, as well as the operator if it is a mobile number;
- Checking any numbers in the application against the database;
- View reviews and complaints from other users to any number or organization from the directory;
- A convenient widget for call logs that displays the caller's name and reviews.
The application database is updated in the background. Currently it contains over 1,500,000 phones.
You do not need to register, enter your number or share any other personal information to use it.
Works on iOS 11.0 and later.
How to find out who called through services
Of course, the most effective way to determine the source of the call is to find it through a special service. For residents of the CIS countries there are several options:
- neberitrubku.ru
- who-calling.rf
- ktomnezvonil.net
- zvonili.com
Using these sites, you can very accurately determine the identity of the person or organization calling you. This happens thanks to a large database of comments and descriptions that people leave after communicating with a contact. Immediately after the request, you will know whether you missed an important call or whether it is better to completely blacklist it on your phone.
