What does the infinity sign mean in a weather forecast?
To be more precise, it is not just infinity, but an infinity symbol with dots at the top and bottom. When looking at it, it does not become intuitively clear what kind of phenomenon this is, unlike other signs. When the sun or cloud is depicted, it immediately becomes clear what kind of weather phenomenon is coming. This is so incomprehensible that some are even frightened by the fact that these may be some kind of potential dangerous cataclysms.
But in fact, there is nothing dangerous in the phenomenon that this sign represents. The infinity sign with dots above and below indicates haze, slight fog. The phenomenon is not so frequent, so you rarely see this symbol and it surprises users.
What the Weather app is missing
The accuracy of the weather forecast depends not only on the calculations of meteorologists
The Weather app has changed a lot in iOS 15. Unfortunately, the function of constantly displaying the weather on the locked screen has not yet appeared. Yes, this feature can be enabled by using Do Not Disturb mode, but this is not what I would like. I think this feature would look cool if Always On Display was added to the iPhone. We will wait for further updates.
We received a convenient Weather application in the iOS 15 update . Now you don't have to guess what the weather will be like in a week. In addition, special thanks to the developers for the maps with air quality - the fact that they exist is already great. Did you like the update? Changes in forecast
If we are talking about precipitation, this means that there will definitely be some. The only question is in what territory. For an ordinary person living within a certain locality and not leaving his home, the indicator does not change. But if you move, the likelihood of getting caught in precipitation increases.
For example, the weather forecast announced that snow is expected. Probability 30%. But this is provided that everyone remains in their place. If there is active movement, the probability can increase to 40, 50 or even 100%, depending on the coverage area. Then it will be possible to get caught in precipitation, even if the initial forecast conveyed a message about 10%, and the clouds avoided the populated area.
It should also be noted that the stated percentage is in no way related to the intensity of precipitation. Even with the bare minimum, there is a chance of getting caught in heavy rain.

Features of the Weather app in iOS 15
Some other Weather features in iOS 15 have gone unnoticed. For example, you can turn on an alert about impending precipitation or view official information from the Russian Hydrometeorological Center.
Precipitation Alerts
Weather in iOS 15 will now notify you when precipitation is expected in your area. We tell you how to activate the function.
If something went wrong: How to roll back from iOS 15 to iOS 14
This feature leaves geolocation always active
- Go to the Weather application;
- On the main screen, click the cards button in the lower right corner;
- In the upper right corner, click "Functions";
- Select "Notifications";
- On the screen, click “Continue”;
- Move the slider next to your current location to the “On” position.
Please note that this is how the application turns on the geolocation in constant activity mode. This significantly affects battery consumption. Unfortunately, without geolocation always turned on, notifications will not work.
If you limit geolocation work, precipitation notifications will not work
Switch it to your usual mode in the iOS settings to the “When using an application” position or to the “When using an application or widgets” position if you do not want geolocation to be constantly turned on.
Animated background
This is what the new Weather animations look like
Apple paid close attention to the application by adding an animated background. It will work on all devices with A12 Bionic or newer, but this feature will not work on earlier iPhone models.
Weather alerts
Now you can get all the information about precipitation
Below the current temperature on the main screen there is now a small window that shows warnings about weather conditions. It could be strong wind, rain, heat or frost. If you click on “Expand”, you will be redirected to the website of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia, where you can get useful information. For other countries, the forecast is provided by The Weather Channel.
Some sites offer to view a precipitation map
These are places where it is currently raining or snowing. The Yandex weather service has placed this block on the right side of the window in the web version. If you select a map, a region with dark spots and falling drops or snowflakes will appear. On the map you can see where precipitation is moving. The color of precipitation can determine its intensity. The map also determines the presence of thunderstorms and wind. This shows where exactly the rain is falling more clearly than the percentage sign.
From the weather forecast, determine the direction from which the wind is blowing. By opening the wind map, you can see in which regions it is strongest or where it is currently calm.

How weather forecasters determine the weather
Often we need to know exactly whether it will rain this week, whether the temperature will drop below zero, etc. But on TV there are only “possible”, “maybe” and so on.
All data is given in probabilities and no exact statements are made. There is a meteorological center in Moscow. Here they determine the weather in different ways. The center has special devices that provide information about the upcoming weather. Forecasters are guided by several data shown on the instruments at once.
One of them is a thermometer protected from direct sunlight. It indicates the actual air temperature in the shade.
There are dozens of different devices located in a small area. Only center employees can approach them, only along well-trodden paths. Because a person can knock off dew on the grass, which also helps set the weather. The devices are not randomly located; booths with temperature thermometers in the shade are installed on the northern side of the site.
A precipitation gauge is located in the center of the hydrometeorological site. This is a metal structure, from the outside it looks like a closed daisy with its petals up. In the middle of the structure there is a hole in which all the moisture that has fallen from the atmosphere is collected. The device can be a source of information about the percentage of rain over an area in weather forecasts. Information from the center goes into the sites database, where we find out the forecast.
Such uncertain weather
It is quite difficult to obtain accurate information about the nearest meteorological situation. Typically a guideline range for weather events is provided. The frequent disappointment in the announced forecasts is quite easily explained. Ordinary people simply do not have the competence to understand all the intricacies.
For example, take the expression “probability of precipitation.” Logically it seems that everything is simple here. The name indicates the likelihood of rain falling in a specified area at a particular hour or day. This is a logical but incorrect interpretation. The chance of rain is relevant to forecasts, but not in the way many people imagine.

What is haze?
Haze is a lighter phenomenon than fog. Fog is a weather condition when the visibility range is up to 1 km. If the visibility is from 1 km to 9 km, then it is called haze.
The nature of haze can be the same as fog:
- The most common cause is the appearance of water particles or ice particles in the air adjacent to the ground. This reduces the visibility range and increases humidity to 85-100%. This is called water or ice haze.
- The second cause of haze is air pollution caused by man-made factors. For example, this can appear in megacities during rush hours, when there is a lot of traffic on the street and emit a large amount of exhaust gases into the air. In industrial areas, haze may appear from active production, which is characterized by emissions. Haze can also be observed in areas near large fires, such as forest fires. All these phenomena are called haze.
- Dust in the air can also cause haze. Unlike water haze, dust haze, on the contrary, is characterized by low humidity. It can happen in places close to dust storms, or in developing cities with a large number of active construction projects.
Meteorological reports most often warn only about haze formed for natural reasons - water and ice, less often dust and man-made. Water and ice are generally harmless to health, unlike dust and man-made air, which can pose a threat of poisoning or damage to the respiratory tract.
