What is Touch ID?
Touch ID is a default feature in Apple products that allows you to:

- make purchases in the App Store without entering your account password.
The operating principle of Touch ID is simple. The mini-scanner built into the Home button captures the iPhone owner’s voluminous fingerprints during setup, and then, upon subsequent touches, compares the received data with the data available in the database. Thus, an outsider, with almost one hundred percent probability of having a different set of fingerprints, simply will not be able to unlock the iPhone and use the information stored in it - including photos, audio, video recordings, email addresses, and so on.
Important: using Touch ID it is impossible to unlock Apple ID, log in to iCloud and other branded online services - the function is used on each device separately and protects a specific iPad or iPhone, and not the user account.
The Touch ID sensor works on iPhone models starting from 5S and iPad starting from Air 2 ; second-generation sensors, characterized by increased accuracy and a minimum number of “departures,” are available starting from the iPhone 6S and iPad Pro 10.5 . Since Touch ID is a physical and not a purely software device, owners of older iPhones and iPads will have to set up a passcode for security purposes - fortunately, this is easier to do than unlinking the iPhone from the Apple ID.
Button replacement procedure
The iPhone must be turned off before disassembling.
For the work you will need a specialized tool, such as:
- Screen suction cup,
- Screwdriver for Pentalobe screws,
- Small Phillips screwdriver,
- Plastic picks (blades),
- Tweezers.
- First, unscrew the screws on the sides of the Lightining connector. Using a suction cup and a mediator/spatula, the smartphone is opened relative to the upper part (the parts are disassembled from the lower part, where the screws were unscrewed).
- The connection point of the display cables is protected by a special metal casing. After unscrewing the screws with a Phillips screwdriver and removing the casing, you can disconnect the cables. This is done using the same pick or a flat plastic spatula.
- On the detached front panel, the screws of the protective casing of the front camera and speaker are unscrewed. The camera is carefully lifted, the speaker and light sensor are removed (using a plastic tool with a sharp edge).
- The Home button remains. It is held in place by 2 more screws. After unscrewing them, the button is released and the cable is turned off.
- A new button is installed, or the old original one is installed if the cable is damaged. Next, assembly is performed in reverse order.
How to set up Touch ID on iPhone?
Setting up Touch ID on a device that supports this function is no more difficult than setting a ringtone on an iPhone. The user needs:
- Open iPhone Settings and go to Touch ID & Passcode.
- Tap on the “Add fingerprint” button.
- Wait for the iPhone or iPad screen to ask you to place your thumb on the Home button and follow the instructions - first by simply touching the sensor, and then completely “rolling” your finger over the button: this will allow you to get a three-dimensional, most accurate fingerprint scan. Repeat the same steps for the remaining fingers - there are five slots in total.
- An iPhone owner who believes that one or more scans were unsuccessful can delete them by tapping on the corresponding header and pulling to the left, then clicking on the “Delete” button. Then you can create a new scan - or limit yourself to the available slots.
- Great! Fingerprint images were received via Touch ID. Now you need to configure the order in which they are used. In the same section, the user must move the top slider that allows you to unlock the iPhone to the “On” position.
- And then, if necessary, similarly enable the use of Touch ID to work with the App Store and iTunes Store.
Important: to disable the Touch ID function, you should deactivate both sliders, and then delete all fingerprint scans stored in the iPhone or iPad’s memory.
If, after some time, the Touch ID sensor stops working properly, you should restart your iPhone, and then disable and reconfigure this feature. Did not help? Perhaps the problem is in the device itself. Then the owner should, without delaying until the sensor completely fails, take the phone to a service center and replace the Touch ID.

Touch ID stopped working - how did I solve this problem!?

As has been repeatedly noted on the blog, all articles are problems or questions that either I personally or my friends have encountered. This is actually why the site was created - to share personal experiences and help others with Apple technology. And so, my already quite old, but still working iPhone 5S “gave me” another idea for instructions - its Touch ID suddenly stopped working. And, as it seemed to me at first, this happened completely and irrevocably. No, but what else can you expect? The device is far from new. Chips, scratches, scuffs, falls - all this was and is. Natural wear and tear of the device cannot be avoided :) Therefore, when Touch ID “fell off”, I was not very surprised. The surprise came only later, in the process of solving this problem... however, let's talk about everything in order.

It is worth noting that if your iPhone has a non-native Home button (for example, replaced after repair), then Touch ID will not function on it. Never. The fingerprint sensor is “hard-wired” to the system board. One board - one Home button. Also, some sellers immediately sell iPhones with a non-working scanner - I already wrote what kind of devices these are.
But we have a different problem - the iPhone stopped recognizing the fingerprint, although nothing happened to it (except for updating iOS).

To be honest, the result surprised me a little :)
I don’t know why simply reconnecting the cable helped, but the fact remains that after this operation the button began to process my fingerprints normally.
Although I have one idea why this could happen - recently my iPhone fell several times (and quite hard). I already thought that it would come to replacing the screen, but in the end... in general, everything worked out. And perhaps it was these falls that caused all the malfunctions that were described just above.
