Despite all the advantages of the new interface, many owners of personal profiles have decided to deactivate the darkened background. Before disabling the dark theme in VK, you should study all possible methods to choose the most suitable one.
Turning off the lights
This extension for the Google Chrome browser was created for the purpose of watching videos on YouTube in night mode, but for other sites, including VK, this add-on will fit very well.
Next, click on the extension icon and you will see that the screen has actually darkened, thereby reducing its brightness. Now the light does not hit your eyes when you sit at night at a computer or laptop.
Of course, many people find it inconvenient to read posts with a darkened background, but at night they are easy to read.
Instructions
Directly changing settings in the browser will not give you the desired result. After all, the developers did not initially provide the necessary options in Opera. Fortunately, there are a lot of extensions that are designed to add new functions to the Internet browser. For example, the Get Styles will help you decorate the appearance of the VKontakte social network. Let's figure out how to install and use it.
Get Styles
We will start directly with installing the plugin:
- In the browser, go to the page https://addons.opera.com/ru/extensions/details/get-styles/.
- We wait for the content to load, and then click on the inscription "Add to…".
- Click on the new icon to the right of the Opera address bar.
- We choose the appropriate design.
- Save the changes.
And on the page https://get-styles.ru/temy there is a huge selection of themes for the social network interface.
Find the appropriate option, and then click on
"Apply" .
VK helper
This extension is really powerful, but the most important thing is that with it you can not only activate the night mode, but also enable many other important and interesting functions, for example the ability to create stories on the computer, which is what we did in one of the previous articles.
First, you will need to go back to the extension store and install the add-on called VK Helper. For convenience, you can immediately.
After that, go to this extension, which is located where all other addons are, and add your account there by clicking on the appropriate button. Next, you just need to log in by entering your username and password into the form. Don't worry about your credentials. You enter everything into the official VK form, and not into the left office.
When your account is activated, log into the extension again, only this time select “Settings”. After this, a separate window with many settings will open. There is plenty of room to wander around here.
In the “Interface” block, check the box next to “Night theme”. After that, just close the window. All your settings will be automatically saved.
And then, just go to your VKontakte page and you will see that the night mode has been activated and the background in VK has become really dark.
VK dark theme
Another browser extension. But it doesn’t just turn off the lights, it makes a really beautiful dark theme for VKontakte. In order to activate it, go to the Google Chrome store again and type “VK dark theme” in the search. After that, install it in the list of available ones.
Next, just activate it in the add-ons panel and log in to the VKontakte website. You might be surprised to see that the social network now displays a dark theme. This mode is much more pleasing to the eye than the one we discussed in the first method. In addition, it instantly turns on and off with just one click.

On Android and iPhone
Since April 2022, a new option has appeared in the official VKontakte utility for phones - dark interface mode. The function works for applications on both Android and iOS.
Before you change the theme, make sure your mobile app has received the April update. The version should be 5.32. If there is no update, launch it through the Play Market or App Store.
Now change the light mode to dark:
- Click on the three stripes icon on the bottom panel (the very last icon). Tap on the gear icon in the top right.

If you don’t find the “Appearance” item in the settings sections, go to the news block of the application and leave a “Dark theme” comment under any post from any community. The application will automatically recognize it and provide the opportunity to activate a dark background.
Black background for VKontakte on Android
For Android devices there are several special applications in the Play Market. Night mode on VKontakte allows you to display a program called “Night VK”. Download it from this page: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.amberfog.reader. In its settings, you can set the theme to change automatically in accordance with the current time of day. A number of other functions are also supported: offline mode, VK invisible, working with multiple accounts, as well as adding several pages and accounts to the application.
And:
- Allows you to set your images on all your chats;
- Displays the time your friends visited their profiles. And it shows the OS with which they logged into the account (Windows, iPhone, Android, etc.);
- Allows you to view your incoming messages, but no one will see that they have been read.
After downloading “Night VK”, you will not need to configure any settings. Black theme in the application by default. On its page in the market there is information that the program has already been downloaded by almost 60 thousand users. And the overall rating is 4.5 points, which indicates the quality and convenience of the application.
Why does white color strain our eyes?
It so happened historically that it is better to distinguish black ink on white paper. That's right - in black and white. These two colors contrast best. And it is easy and pleasant for us to read newspapers and books. Most websites on the Internet (VK is no exception) and desktop programs have adopted this trend. Their pages also follow this structure - the words are written in black, the background is white. But the monitor is not paper. First of all, it is a light source.
White color on screens transmits the maximum amount of light. And to put it in simple words, in the dark our eyes absorb it as much as possible. Because of this, they become very tired and, over time, begin to ache, blush and even itch. If we make the standard color scheme of an Internet page the opposite (black background, white letters), we, on the contrary, will minimize the light emission of the pixels on the monitor and the strain on our vision.
If we look at a screen at night that displays more dark colors, we will be able to stay at the PC much longer. If you are a night owl by nature and like to surf the net after sunset, then you simply need to use a black theme in VKontakte.

The application works with many browsers and allows you to switch themes in minutes. To use the program, you need to perform a number of actions:

As you can see, if you want to make a dark background in VK on a computer and an Android phone, it’s not at all difficult, and everyone can handle it. Therefore, I see no point in writing about other methods, which are still quite sufficient.
In my opinion, the most convenient of the presented methods is the second, that is, activating a special dark theme. The beautiful and soft interface does not strain the eye, and one-button activation makes it much easier to use. But still, I prefer to use the VK Helper extension, which we looked at last. Activating the night mode here is less convenient, but this addition is so multifunctional that it can replace a dozen others. Why install many extensions if you can install one, but which will replace everything? Exactly.
