How to update Microsoft Edge for Windows 10 manually?

Good afternoon friends. How to update Microsoft Edge for Windows 10? Microsoft has changed the method for promoting Edge browser updates to Chronium for Windows OS. At the moment, the company is no longer supplying new versions for each OS. Microsoft is currently focusing on "Progressive Deployments".

More than a year has passed since the release of Microsoft Edge on Chronium, and after that the company has been releasing regular updates for its browser, trying to combine it with the Chromium release schedule.

Microsoft is committed to supporting automatic updates. For the most part, people who use this browser notice the update coming in a similar way.

A person who uses Edge has the ability to perform the update manually. In this case, the browser will download and install updates if they appear on the official website.

To do this, you need to go to edge://settings/help . The browser will show what version you currently have and then analyze for updates. During this time period, if a new updated version of the browser has appeared, it will immediately begin to download and be installed on the system automatically.

What is the essence of progressive deployments?

As mentioned, starting in May 2022, Microsoft has changed the way it distributes updates. As stated above, progressive deployments (PD) are now in effect.

PR is engaged in limiting the availability of the updated version, over time releasing updates for a certain time period. Microsoft uses this period to track updates and collect comments, and to respond even more quickly to various browser failures.

The company reports:

“We carefully monitor the status of the update and release new ones within a certain number of days, we have the opportunity to reduce various errors that occur in the released versions. We have released versions of Edge for Windows 7, Windows 8 and 8.1, and Windows 10. Now we are supporting the Edge browser on OS Mac.”

The company assigns unique values that are consistent with receiving updates for each browser load. The browser now receives automatic updates that depend on this setting. Microsoft adds that the update can take several days to install, and the company will release security-related updates (they are called “Critical”) much faster.

The main disadvantage of using PR may be that some people will download updates with the latest options, changes and amendments with a slight delay. If you start manually checking the new releases, the browser will most likely not detect the released updates if the period that has passed since the release has not passed the active period. The company will probably change the method for receiving updates in the future. So that those people who are interested in new updates receive them first.

Still, people have the opportunity to do browser updates manually. To do this, you need to apply the “Microsoft Update Catalog”. The company publishes new releases of the browser at this address as soon as they become publicly available.

Chromium-based Edge browser now installs automatically via Update Center

Microsoft has made the Chromium-based Edge browser available to Windows 10 users via Windows Update. If previously Edge had to be manually downloaded from the company’s website, now this process occurs automatically.

After installation, the system will need to reboot. In the future, updating the browser will be possible directly from the application. The automatic browser replacement procedure will transfer your Start menu contacts and shortcuts, as well as your taskbar contacts and shortcuts. Data such as passwords, favorites, and open tabs will be retained when you switch to a new browser.

The previous version did not replace Microsoft Edge (Legacy). It did not include elements from the final build, including support for ARM64 processors for Windows 10. The developers also announced synchronization of history and extensions, but this feature is not yet available. It will be introduced in the summer.

In the coming months, Edge plans to add vertical tabs and a new sidebar with search functionality. We are working together with Google to improve the scrolling and voice functions of web pages. Microsoft is also working to improve the Progressive Web Apps experience in Edge.

New versions of Edge are scheduled to be released every 6 weeks.
Previously, due to the browser being tied to the OS, its updates went through Windows Update and were available only once every six months along with a major update of the operating system itself. To download the new browser on computers running Windows 10 versions 1803, 1809, and 1903, Microsoft recommends installing patches KB4525237, KB4519978, KB4523205, KB4520062, KB4517389, and KB4517211. Version 1909 does not require additional updates.

In January 2022, a stable version of the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser became available for download for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android users. The browser supports 90 languages, including Russian. At the time, Microsoft said the new Edge “is the only browser optimized for Windows 10.” The source code for some of its components has also been published.

In February, Microsoft released a new version - Edge 80.0.361.48, which supports the ARM64 architecture. In addition, the developers have added support for Dolby Vision technology to the browser, improved support for web applications, and also improved performance and stability.

At the end of March, the corporation announced that it was suspending development of the stable version of the new Edge 81 browser due to the “global circumstances” that had arisen due to the coronavirus epidemic. Then Microsoft noted that they intended to concentrate efforts on the stability and security of Edge 80.

How to update Edge manually?

So we need to go into the address bar and enter the bottom address:

  1. People may think that they have not been updated for 8 months, but this is not so, you just need to type Edge 91 in the search that appears and click “find”. After this, we will see updates from three days ago, which we can receive based on the system’s bit capacity;
  2. So, enter Edge 91 (you may have a different number) and click “Find”;
  3. After that, we look for our system. As you can see, the update occurred on 06/11/2021, and the article was written on 06/13/2021. In other words, the update is really fresh. Click “Download” in the selected version;

How to prevent the new Microsoft Edge from disabling the old version

If you need to have two versions of Microsoft Edge installed simultaneously on your Windows 10 computer or laptop, here's how to do it:

  1. Go to the registry editor (press Win+R keys, enter regedit)
  2. In Registry Editor, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\
  3. Create a subsection in it and name it EdgeUpdate
  4. In this section, create a DWORD value (32-bit even on Windows 10 x64) named Allowsxs with a value of 1.

Done, now when installing Edge Chromium manually or automatically, the old version of the browser from Microsoft will not be disabled, you can find it in the list of applications, but its name will change to “Legacy version of Microsoft Edge”, as in the screenshot below.

At the same time, you can use two browsers simultaneously if necessary.

What's new in Edge 90

The new Edge 90 brings a lot of changes to many of the browser's features. Although, without a doubt, the most important thing is the new children's mode.

Safe viewing for children

Microsoft already introduced us to this new navigation mode in February last year with the Canary version of the browser. More and more minors are connecting to the Internet, just as more and more dangers lurk in every corner of the Internet. Therefore, in addition to constantly monitoring them, it is recommended to have a parental control system that prevents minors from leaving safe areas and accessing websites that are not suitable for their age or that may be dangerous.

Edge's new Kids Mode does just that. This mode is responsible for providing a safe environment through which minors can connect to the Internet and enjoy exclusively safe content suitable for the entire family.

We can launch this mode at any time from the profile section of the browser and select one of the two age ranges that it offers us: either from 5 to 8 years old or from 9 years old.

The browser is placed in full screen mode, and the child will not be able to exit this way. Microsoft's security systems ensure that you can only visit websites that are appropriate for your age. And best of all, we don't need to configure anything at all to use this method. There is no longer an excuse to protect babies.

New loading panel

Another big new feature we can find in the new Edge is the new drop-down download bar. Chrome, as always, showed download history and active downloads on the browser's internal page. Edge initially copied this system, but has now opted for a Firefox-style look and feel, with the ability to view downloads in a drop-down pane with one click on the browser's own taskbar.

PDF printing improvements

Edge PDF viewer is another best feature of this browser. Even though this is the best free PDF viewer we can have on Windows 10 right now, Microsoft continues to improve it. The new version of the browser has improved the ability to print these documents.

Starting with Edge 90, we can place ourselves on a specific page of a document and by selecting the print option we will see the option to directly print the page we are on rather than the entire document.

Other changes

Other new features we can find in the new Edge 90:

  • Ability to delete multiple passwords saved in the manager with one click.
  • Improved font rendering and increased clarity when reading large numbers of web pages.
  • Form autofill improvements.
  • Ability to search both local browsing history and synchronized history.
