How to fix WiFi disconnecting when iPhone is locked or in sleep mode

Recently, a large number of iOS users (including iOS 13 users) are facing the “WiFi disconnects when iPhone is locked” issue.

I myself encountered the same problem on my iPhone XR during the iOS 13 beta testing. Since the operating system was still in development, I did not pay attention to the problem, thinking that Apple would solve it when the official version came out.

But unfortunately this did not happen. Now that the problem has become too common to ignore, I thought I should share some possible solutions that could fix this strange “WiFi disconnects when iPhone is locked” error.

A hint before moving forward.

A hard reboot has long been a savior of sorts for iOS, especially when fixing some common problems like crashing, freezing, and even Wi-Fi issues. So don't forget about this little hack as it can save you a lot of time.

  • To and later , iPhone 8, or iPhone 8 Plus , simply press and release the Volume Up button, press and release the Volume Down button, and then simultaneously press and hold the Volume Up and Side buttons until The Apple logo appears.
  • To force restart your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus , press and hold the Volume Down button and the Sleep/Wake button at the same time.
  • To force a restart on iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE, or earlier, press and hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons at the same time.

After your iPhone restarts, check to see if “WiFi turns off when iPhone sleeps” is still there. If so, you're ready to go. If not, then there is no need to be disappointed as there are many other tricks to overcome the problem.

Forget about the Wi-Fi network and connect to it.

So, based on my experience, I would suggest you try this too. Just open the Settings app -> Wi-Fi -> tap on the information button next to the Wi-Fi network. Then select "Forget this network" and confirm. Now go back and log into the Wi-Fi network again.

Refresh your connection.

If the above step does not solve your problem, try refreshing your connection. When you connect to a Wi-Fi network, you receive an IP address that identifies your device on the network.

Connection refresh is where it reassigns the IP address and refreshes the wireless connection to the network. For me, this process had significant success in solving the problem.

To renew your network lease, launch the Settings app and then go to the info button right next to your Wi-Fi network. Now scroll down to find the Refresh Connection button and click on it.

Periodically turning off Wi-Fi

The device may turn off due to two functions on the iPhone that are not always useful:

  • Wi-Fi assistance. This function is designed to automatically switch to mobile Internet when the signal is lost. But sometimes the iPhone loses the network even when the router is unstable: when the speed decreases or the ping increases. You can disable this feature in “Settings”, in the “Cellular” tab.

Shutdown in sleep mode

Most often this is due to the characteristics of the router, not the smartphone, so you need to correct the parameters of the router itself. Here are the functions that may be the reasons why Wi-Fi keeps turning off on iPhone in lock mode:

  • Short IP address lease time;
  • EAP encryption;
  • WMM option;
  • Inappropriate range;
  • Roaming Helper;
  • Automatic channel detection.

Why iPhone running iOS 12 has problems with wireless connection, you will find out in the following video:

These are the moments that can cause the wireless connection to fail on the Yablofon. Often, the problem lies in the smartphone itself. But if the network turns off (it turns off, and does not go into sleep mode) in standby mode, then, according to reviews from some users, only replacing the router helps.

Andrey Romanenko is dissatisfied with the performance of Wi-Fi on the latest firmware versions:

Force restart your iPhone

The next time Wi-Fi suddenly turns off on your iPhone, force restart your smartphone. Unfortunately, this will not solve the problem completely, but it will allow you to no longer encounter random Wi-Fi rejections for 1-2 days. This method also works in cases where the connection not only to Wi-Fi, but also to the LTE network is interrupted. Note that users have noticeably fewer complaints about loss of LTE signal in iOS 12.1.

In order to force a reboot you must:

On iPhone 6s/6s Plus and older : Press and hold the Home and Power buttons at the same time until the Apple logo appears on the screen.

On iPhone 7/7 Plus : Press and hold the Volume Down and Power buttons until the Apple logo appears.

On iPhone 8/8 Plus/X and newer models :

1. Press and release the Volume Up button.

2. Press and release the Volume Down button.

3. Press and hold the Power button until the Apple logo appears.

Apple is expected to fix the annoying iOS 12.1 issue with one of the next updates to its mobile operating system. It is possible that this will happen in iOS 12.1.1, which is in the final stages of testing.

Disabling Wi-Fi Assist

Hidden in the mobile connection settings (Settings - Cellular) is a very insidious switch called Wi-Fi Assist . This option has already ruined more than one iPhone user with expensive mobile Internet.

It works like this: when the iPhone unexpectedly loses the Wi-Fi network, data begins to be transmitted through the mobile connection.

The system has a certain algorithm that can switch to a mobile connection even if the Wi-Fi signal is poor. The speed has dropped a little, the ping has increased or the router is having trouble reaching distant rooms, but the iPhone is already downloading data at full speed via LTE.

You should disable this option to save mobile traffic and extend the battery life of your gadget.

Solving Wi-Fi problems

Sometimes a similar problem occurs when the user often moves between places with familiar Wi-Fi networks. For example, if the office has its own network and a network of colleagues, or at home there is a router at home and a neighbor’s.

The smartphone may momentarily lose connection with the main router and then quickly connect to a neighboring one. And due to the fact that it is further away, the signal may be worse and the feature described above with the Wi-Fi assistant will turn on.

To avoid automatically connecting to remote Wi-Fi networks, you should find them in the iOS settings and disable the Auto-connect switch.

If after this the problem is not solved, you will have to reset the network settings.

To do this, go to Settings - General - Reset and select Reset network settings. After this, the iPhone will erase data on all known Wi-Fi networks to which it was previously connected, delete the mobile operator’s Internet settings and the entered APN parameters.

This often solves problems with Wi-Fi connections.

When purchasing expensive smartphones from one of the most popular companies in the world, every buyer dreams of getting a phone that will work without any hiccups or problems. But it is worth remembering that ideal gadgets do not exist. You can find some kind of flaw in everyone. A lot of iPhone users increasingly began to complain about instability and inconsistency in connecting to the Wi-Fi network. Whatever one may say, free access to the Internet is now considered one of the most popular in any smartphone. Therefore, it’s worth figuring out why Wi-Fi disappears on the iPhone?

Problem Definition

At the very beginning, you need to find out whether your mobile operator provides LTE or 4G connectivity. Some SIM cards issued by the employer are considered corporate.

Therefore, they are designed for making calls and sending SMS messages. Access to the World Wide Web is prohibited on them, because the wrong tariff is used. Failures are characterized by the following symptoms:

  • LTE, wireless network or mobile Internet does not work;

  • there is no possibility of using the phone as a modem;

  • There is a connection icon, however, requests made in the browser are not executed.

If the mobile Internet on your iPhone does not work, you can try to reboot the device. Often this simple method helps restore the connection. This indicates that the network is not working correctly. If the Internet is not working well on your iPhone, look at the icon in the upper right corner. If you are in coverage area, “E”, “H+” or “3G” is displayed.

If there are no icons, you are outside the coverage area.

Therefore, you need to find an area where the Internet will work.

If you recently purchased a phone, you need to configure it correctly. This can be done from your cellular network operator, or you can enter all the parameters yourself, manually. You should first clarify which parameters will be suitable for a specific iPhone model. Often everything happens automatically as soon as you connect to the base station.

Why does iPhone disconnect from Wi-Fi in standby mode?

If the iPhone loses Wi-Fi, the first reason for the lack of connection may be an incorrectly configured router. The quality of transmission and speed also depend on its serviceability. On a smartphone this is displayed as follows:

  1. Wi-Fi does not connect.
  2. The connection is established very slowly and often freezes.
  3. The Internet icon blinks gray or disappears completely.

It is also worth remembering that when saving battery or when the smartphone is blocked, the connection may be poor or even interrupted.

Then you should check your router, because in some settings there is a function “Disable automatically channels” that are not used often. Controlling this moment is quite simple. It is enough to organize a connection via a local network in any public institution or try through another router, but at home.

No connection

Experts claim that the Wi-Fi disconnection problem present in all iPhones is a result of the module installed in them. You can solve the problem as follows:

  • Perform a forced reboot. In the latest smartphones, you will need to press the volume and side keys in turn.
  • Mark automatic connection to the Network. To do this you will need to forget it. You can follow this path by going to the “Settings” menu, selecting “Wi-Fi”, and in it the line “Lose network”. Then enter the password again.
  • Perform a general removal of all settings on the iPhone to factory settings. To do this, also in the “Settings” menu, in the “Main” and “Reset” paragraphs, find the “Reset network settings” item.
  • Deactivate VPN. This phone function can also be disabled in “Settings”, “VPN”.
  • It is advisable to constantly update the operating system to the latest version.

Periodically turning off Wi-Fi

Sometimes iPhone loses wifi due to additional mandatory features from the manufacturer, sometimes they are very useful, but not always:

  1. Wi-Fi help. Why is this function needed? In order to automatically reconnect between Wi-Fi and mobile Internet. But it also increases the ability to quickly disconnect from an unstable network. You can turn off assistance in the “Settings” menu, “Smartphone communication” item.
  2. “Auto-connection” also interferes with establishing a stable connection. The function is configured to automatically reconnect between available networks, even if they are weaker. This can only be disabled individually for each of the available networks.

Why does Wi-Fi turn off on iPhone?

To find a way to solve the problem, you need to note several main reasons why it occurs:

  • the person has moved far from the router;
  • the router has disconnected from the power source;
  • router malfunction;
  • iPhone system errors;
  • the impact of third-party services on the connection.

Most often, Wi-Fi drops simply because the phone is located too far from the router. It provides Internet only to a small room. And the maximum possible coverage area depends on the power of the router.

To ensure Wi-Fi coverage even over long distances, it is recommended to purchase routers that support Wi-Fi 5 or 6.

Since the router uses a power source to operate, a power outage instantly leads to a disconnection of Wi-Fi on the iPhone.

The identified causes of the problem are easy to eliminate. But what about people whose Wi-Fi turns off on its own? In this case, it is worth talking about the occurrence of a system failure of the router or smartphone. Next, we will consider the most popular methods to solve the problem.

Shutdown in sleep mode

If wifi turns off on your iPhone when it is blocked, then this problem most likely occurs due to problems with the router, and not the gadget. Therefore, first of all, you need to look for and fix the reasons on the router. The main factors that prevent the iPhone from working properly:

  • EAP encryption;
  • incorrectly created range;
  • automatic connection to the channel;
  • The time for renting an IP address is set incorrectly.

To fix them and the iPhone stops flying off the network, you need to perform the following manipulations:

  1. To increase the lease time of an IP address, go to the “Settings”, “IP Options” menu and select “Lease Time”. And set the value there to at least 25000 seconds.
  2. Changing the reception frequency. This way you can correct the frequency from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz.
  3. Enable in WMM settings

Instructions for troubleshooting Wi-Fi problems

Experts give basic recommendations so that problems can be resolved independently:

  • Try changing the network to connect to. Let it be a local access point in a cafe or another, but in a home environment. If you can establish a connection, then there is a problem with the router.
  • Organize monitoring of connections to the router. To do this, you will need to turn on standby mode on your iPhone and establish the connection from any other smartphone.

If such tips do not help and the iPhone disconnects from wifi, then you need to approach the setup professionally. Perform a number of mandatory actions.

Install the latest version of iOS

To organize the download you will need:

  1. "Settings" menu;
  2. item "Basic";
  3. Click the “Update software” sub-item. In the window that opens, you will need to make a choice: organize installation or agree with the offer of the smartphone.

Important! If iTunes does not help you update, you will need to download the latest version file to flash it.

Do a forced reboot

Sometimes it is enough to simply restart the phone and the signal will be restored. This only helps if the problem was in the software.

Disconnect from your wireless network and reconnect

If the Wi-Fi icon disappears and a message periodically pops up on the screen stating that the network password was entered incorrectly, then it will be enough to simply reorganize the connection. To do this, in the “Settings” menu, in the “Block network” item, perform the action to forget the old connection, and then enter the password again.

Change the request to connect to wireless networks

To control this function, you need to go to “Settings” and enable the “Confirm connection” line. In this case, the smartphone will automatically offer to connect to a stronger network. If there were no connections previously, you will need to enter everything manually.

Disabling Wi-Fi Assist

By going to “Settings” and the “Cellular” item, you will then need to find the “Wireless Network Assistance” function. To turn off, you need to change the position of the slider; just pull it to the side. Its color should then become white, and not green as when turned on.

Disable VPN

If the VPN function is not currently used, you should disable it. To do this, in the “Settings” menu, in the “General” section, select “VPN”.

How to prevent the problem from happening again

Every person is interested in ensuring that the iPhone does not glitch during use. Even if you managed to solve the problem with forced shutdown, you need to take into account several useful recommendations:

  • periodically calibrate the battery;
  • do not visit suspicious sites or download dubious files;
  • always use the latest version of iOS;
  • Before updating the system, do not forget to perform a factory reset;
  • download applications only from the App Store;
  • Change your iPhone in a timely manner if it has been in use for more than 4-5 years.

Hardware failure of the Wi-Fi module

Problems that arise from the hardware are in no way related to the firmware of the smartphone. To solve the problem, just contact any service center. But you can try to perform the manipulations yourself:

  1. Turn on the gadget and heat it with a hairdryer; when a message appears on the screen about the effect of very high temperatures on the iPhone, you should restart it.
  2. On the contrary, you can freeze your smartphone a little by placing it in the freezer for a while, and then reboot it.

If all else fails

Unfortunately, even such a large list of solutions to the problem does not help to completely get rid of Wi-Fi errors. Our experts will tell you what to do in this case.
