Many modern smartphones are equipped with a built-in NFC (Near Field Communication) module, which allows you to transfer information over short distances. Using this function, the owner of a mobile device is able to pay for purchases in stores, send and receive files, and also use the smartphone as a travel ticket. According to many analysts, NFC technology will soon begin to penetrate various areas of life, making everyday tasks easier.
But what should users do if their phone does not work with this technology by default? Should you think about replacing your gadget? The problem can be solved by installing additional equipment, but this is unlikely to be convenient or simple.
Purpose of technology
The Near Field Communication feature is considered fast, convenient and safe to use.
It owes its appearance in 2004 to Apple Corporation, which ensured data exchange between gadgets using the NFS chip. Sending information is possible over a distance of up to ten centimeters using radio frequencies. A chip is integrated into the mobile device that works thanks to the Android Beam function. The main difference between NFS technology and Bluetooth is speed - the connection is established within a tenth of a second.
Is it possible to determine the presence of a microcircuit? To do this, use one of the following methods:
- check the “more” settings item;
- study the smartphone operating manual (section - technical parameters);
- look for the presence of the corresponding logo on the back panel of the mobile phone;
- Check the information on official websites.
After making sure that the module is present in the smartphone, activate it. To do this, go to the “additional” subsection, find information about contactless connections, set the activation mark, after which Android Beam turns on automatically.
If this does not happen, you can enable the option manually.
If all manipulations are performed correctly, the smartphone supports contactless payments.
NFS technology is used in a mobile device in three ways:
- an image of a credit card is reproduced for payment;
- tags are read;
- transmission of information over a peer-to-peer network channel.
To send information, you should enter the desired content, place the sending device with the rear panels facing the receiving device, wait for the gadgets to synchronize, send the information and wait until the operation is confirmed by the appropriate signal.
With the help of this technology, numerous everyday problems are solved. For example, with an appropriate adapter for a personal computer, you can send videos, map routes, web pages, and perform other actions via the NFC module. Of considerable interest in the module is the automation of settings changes and the launch of mobile applications. In addition, it is possible to save settings in tags.
What is it needed for
The NFC module today makes a person's life much easier. It is used in various fields. One of them is payment transactions in stores and supermarkets. The NFC microchip replaces bank cards. To pay for purchases, simply touch your unlocked smartphone to the terminal. Short-range contacts are often used in everyday life to solve certain problems:
- Door lock key. NFS helps open doors equipped with a special reader. The system operates in a small range - up to 15-20 cm.
- In Western countries, NFS is gradually replacing the QR code; now information about goods in a store can be tracked in a new way. However, in Russia this method is not used often, so when viewing information you will have to wait a little while the data is loaded.
- Managing devices that have a tag. When some devices are equipped with NFS modules, you can control them using your phone. For example, turn on speakers or printers by placing the phone next to them. The technology allows you to pair smartphones with fitness bracelets, iPods, tablets and read the necessary information from them.

Module NFC helps exchange data between two gadgets. To do this, you need to attach the phones with their back panels to each other and wait for the selected files to finish downloading.
Important! Today the NFS module works on Android and IOS. You can use it on phones from different manufacturers (Xiaomi, iPhone, Samsung, etc.).
Module types
External NFC modules for smartphones are divided into types, differing in size, location in relation to the phone body, and ease of integration. Naturally, the easiest way is to buy a modern phone equipped with the necessary chip.
Some modifications of gadgets are deprived of the treasured element, and in such situations, modules are provided that are attached to the outside of the panel.
If microchips installed separately are divided into categories, you get two groups:
- active – work via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi channels, require a large amount of energy consumption;
- passive - one-way, do not support full exchange of information between gadgets, are not overwritten, and do not save information.
Taking into account the type of device and the wishes of its owner, they determine ways to integrate the module into a mobile phone.
Does it work?
Yes. At the moment, this solution is the only working way for Russia to add NFC to a phone without NFC.
But, of course, its disadvantages are obvious. It is not suitable for all smartphones, it requires a contract with MTS, the external antenna is easy to damage, and the seal of the phone case is also compromised, since the antenna is brought out through a seam. In addition, this is still not a full-fledged NFC chip. They cannot, for example, read and program NFC tags.
Technologies of the 21st century are gradually spreading and changing people's lives for the better. Many of them are aimed at making the simplest everyday tasks easier, freeing up time for something important. You can carry a whole “package” of such technologies with you in your smartphone. For example, NFC has recently become increasingly popular among users around the world.
SIM cards with module
Externally, such a SIM card does not differ from a regular one, it is executed in a simple format, it comes in mini and micro. Such cards are sold through cellular operators at an affordable cost.
Using the described NFS modules, they transfer funds using a contactless method and pay for purchased goods and services.
The advantages of a SIM card include:
- accessibility - easy to find and purchase in any city in Russia;
- ease of installation (everyone knows how a SIM card is inserted into the phone);
- NFS option active.
It is recommended to observe certain specifications when using.
You must link to a bank account or plastic card. If your mobile phone only supports one SIM card, you will have to change the contact number.
User identification is not required, which reduces the level of security.
NFS tags
A special tag performs the functions of an NFS adapter for a mobile device. Externally, it looks like a small round disk mounted on the outer surface of the gadget. In most cases, the mark is flat, which makes it inconspicuous to the touch.
The functions of the tag are similar to the NFS module, but there is one advantage - it is possible to control the settings of the gadget on which this tag is installed.
In addition, this version of the chip has an affordable price, allows you to pay for a product or service, and you can insert it yourself. Unfortunately, the NFS function is considered passive; you will have to install and configure an additional mobile application; a specific label is used for a specific function.
NFC antennas
Another acceptable option for consumers choosing a way to install NFS on Android. You can purchase the item at an affordable price in any store that sells electronics and equipment. The peculiarity of the module is in its mounting - one part is located inside the phone, and the other above its body.
Please note that this option for integrating the NFS module is not suitable for mobile devices with a non-removable back panel.
What is an NFC antenna? This is an element that allows you to make money transfers, pay for purchases, send information, and manage mobile phone settings.
It has a full package of options, does not require additional settings, and has a reinforced fastening that reduces the likelihood of loss to zero.
Unfortunately, few manufacturers produce such an element, and it is not particularly in demand. In addition, an NFC antenna installed by yourself consumes a large amount of energy.
How to install the module yourself?
Let's figure out how to add an NFC module to a mobile phone without an NFC chip, and how possible it is. The integration process does not cause any difficulties and does not imply the presence of special skills. The consumer can do this work at home, spending a few minutes on installation.
The adapter can be installed on both a mobile phone and a tablet.
Setting up a SIM card
Proceed in accordance with the following algorithm:
- visit the cellular operator whose services you use;
- exchange your SIM card for a new one equipped with an NFS module;
- Install the received card into your mobile phone, proceeding as in the case of a regular card. How can I make my phone support the NFC option after this? Simply follow the setup instructions that appear in your phone's dialog box;
- Complete an application with the operator to link your bank account to the purchased card. By the way, this can also be done directly at a bank branch;
- Be sure to carry out practical testing to verify the correctness of the settings of the new SIM card.
When ordering a card exchange, please indicate that your mobile phone is not equipped with NFS technology (the chip is not integrated into it).
Tag activation
How to pay with a mobile phone if you don’t have a SIM card with NFS? For this purpose, special labels are presented to the consumer. To use this element, you must:
- buy a tag with NFS (or several pieces) in the nearest place - from a cellular operator, in a mobile phone store, in electronics stores;
- install a tag on the body of the phone. As a rule, the back panel is used for this, using a sticky layer of the mark when fixing;
- From official sources that implement applications for Android or iOS, download the program necessary to configure and manage tags. Examples of these are Trigger or Tag Writer. You can download these applications to your phone for subsequent payment via NFC for free;
- set the necessary tasks, configure tags taking into account your own wishes;
- do a trial test.
Tagging apps are easy to use and have all the features you need to ensure full functionality.
When purchasing tags, make sure they are compatible with your mobile device. It is recommended to consult with the seller.
Antenna installation
We know where the NFC antenna is located. We suggest you figure out how to install this NFC module on your smartphone. Proceed as follows:
- purchase everything you need in a store accessible to you;
- open the back cover of the mobile phone, take out the SIM card;
- remove the antenna from the packaging, remove the protective film;
- Carefully place the NFS antenna on the SIM card and gently press it. Do not use excessive force to avoid damaging the element or card;
- install the SIM card in the slot so that the antenna protrudes outward;
- insert the battery, place the remaining part of the antenna module on top;
- insert the back cover into the fastening grooves;
- As soon as possible, check the antenna for functionality by paying for any product using it.
Thus, the NFC antenna is installed on the p9 Lite smartphone, attached to Android 7 plus, and integrated into other mobile phone models. How much the element necessary for contactless payment costs, check on the stores’ website.
Each module described above has its own advantages and disadvantages. When choosing, you should rely on your own calculations and preferences. Separately, we note that the external NFS chip will differ in functionality from the one integrated by the manufacturer, but payment by phone through one touch will be possible.
Good news: you can partially do it!
However, not everything is so bad. To the aid of those who are unable to buy a phone, removable phone accessories come to the rescue - NFC-enabled SIM cards and removable NFC antennas.
SIM cards with NFC support in Russia are produced only by the Big Three operators - MTS, Megafon and Beeline. But we will focus on the first, since the solution he proposes meets our task.
Megafon and Beeline cards are intended for a slightly different purpose: they are installed in phones that already have NFC support, and are used for contactless payment for transport fares from a mobile phone account.
But with the help of the service from MTS, you can partially use NFC payment capabilities , namely, pay in transport and in stores, using an MTS Bank card as a wallet.
