How to turn off iPhone: via computer, via iTunes, using buttons

iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are already on sale, and XR will join their ranks in the near future. Most users will switch to new products from devices that had a Home button. In this article, we have collected instructions on how to turn off, force reboot, enter DFU and Recovery modes for iPhone X, XS and XR.

If you recently updated from an iPhone 8, iPhone 7 or earlier, you noticed that the “X” models do not have a Home button, because of this decision Apple had to change the mechanics of forced reboot, as well as introducing smartphones into DFU and Recovery mode.

How to turn off iPhone

To disable iPhone 8 and older models, do the following:

  1. Press the lock key for a few seconds.
  2. Wait for 2 switches to appear on the screen (the top one is used to turn off the device, and the bottom one is used to cancel actions).
  3. Move the top slider to the right and the device will turn off.

The principle of turning off iPhone X and 11 is slightly different:

  1. Press and hold the volume up or down key and the lock button at once.
  2. Wait for the “ Turn Off ” button and drag the slider to the right.

To turn on the gadget, you need to hold down the lock button and wait for the logo to appear.

Setting up iPhone X using Quick Start

On iOS 11, 12 and later, there is a “Quick Start” function; it transfers basic settings (but not applications or other data) from another device running this operating system. If you are not transferring settings from another iPhone, or doing it through an iTunes backup, click on the “Set up manually” button.

When you turn on your iPhone for the first time, you need to activate it. This can be done via Wi-Fi, 3G/LTE, or iTunes. In iOS 12 After this, the system will ask you to create a password. By tapping on the “Passcode Options” button, you can set a four-digit numeric or arbitrary alphabetic password. So you don't have to enter a password manually, ask iPhone to remember your facial features to automatically unlock it.

Standard shutdown

How to turn off an iPhone 6 that is working and has no defects is explained in the user manual. In this case you need:

  1. Press and hold the power button, which is located on the right side of the iPhone 6 case.
  2. After two or three seconds, a window will appear in which the corresponding slider moves to the right to disable it.

The question of how to turn off the iPhone 6S can be answered in the same way, since these two smartphones are structurally no different. Although in previous models the lock button is located at the top, this must be taken into account before turning off your iPhone. If problems arise with a button or screen, you need to force it to turn off using another procedure, which requires a little more time.

Disabling via the “Settings” menu

In addition to the standard method, which involves using a button, you can turn off the iPhone in another way. This is done using the functionality available in the settings menu. To do this you need:

  1. go to the settings menu;
  2. go to the “General” section and scroll the menu to the end;
  3. click on the “Turn off” button;
  4. A new screen will pop up, where the slider for putting the phone in an inactive state will be displayed.

From the SOS menu

Pressing the volume up/down button and the lock key at the same time brings up the emergency call menu on devices with Face ID. Here you can not only call the rescue service, but also restart the device.

How to turn on iPhone XR

The biggest problem users have is turning off the iPhone XR, since they have to press not only the “Power” button, but also one of the volume rockers. Many didn't even know about it.

However, switching on is as simple as possible. The only action required from device owners is to long-press the power button. After a few seconds, the device startup process will begin. At the final stage, the phone may require authorization via a password or Face ID, but these are details regulated by the owner of the device.

Turning on even such a powerful smartphone as the iPhone XR can take quite a long time. The startup speed depends on the number of applications running in the background and the presence of viruses.

Turning on and off in normal state

To deal with the problem, you should first find out how to turn off and turn on the iPhone in a working (functioning) state. To do this you need:

  • Hold down the “Power” button;
  • After some time, a message will appear on the screen: “Turn off” - in Russian localization, “Slide To Power Off” - in English;
  • Swipe across the inscription from left to right;
  • The device will turn off.

The smartphone is turned on by holding the “Power” button. You do not need to perform any other actions for the device to boot.

The battery is completely dead

Here we are not discovering America, but simply connecting the iPhone to the network adapter for 15-30 minutes. After a short recharge, we try to activate the iPhone, leaving the “charger” cable connected to the outlet. The display will show an image of an empty battery with a lightning bolt inside. This means that the device is in order and is in the process of charging. As soon as it gains the necessary energy, it will start working immediately:

Another interesting article for you: How to enable display of charge percentage in iPhone

When depicting an empty battery, a socket and an arrow pointing towards lightning, the iPhone owner accepts the information that the battery is completely used up or the device has not been used for a long time and therefore needs 4-5 hours of recharging. The gadget is then activated.

Ways to turn off iPhone

You must understand that there may be a hundred reasons why the sensor does not work on an iPhone, so here you need to go through all the options for each case. Follow all the steps in order to decide which one is best for you. We'll start with the simplest one.

Normal smartphone shutdown

Turning off the iPhone is done with the Power button, which also locks (unlocks) the device. This method is only relevant if the screen does not work partially, for example, your lower part is broken and you cannot see anything, or the screen does not work at all, but the sensor works (even in this case, you can roughly guess when the strip should appear turn it off and pull it in the desired direction). Therefore, the procedure is as follows:

  • On your device, hold down the Power key and wait a few seconds (3-5 seconds);
  • If your screen is partially broken, but the sensor works, just pull the slider in the right direction and the phone turns off;

  • If the screen is completely broken, but the sensor works, also press Power and wait a few seconds, after which you step back from the screen about 1 centimeter and swipe your finger to the right. This is a kind of “blind shutdown”. In some cases, it is necessary to repeat the operation several times to get where you want;
  • If the screen does not work, the sensor does not work either, proceed to the next paragraph of our article.

Hard reboot (shutdown) iPhone

In most cases, when serious failures occur in the software or modules on the iPhone, a “hard reboot” is applied, which normalizes the stable operation of the device. It may also be useful to you if you need to turn off your iPhone, but the sensor does not work. It says reboot, you say, but we need a complete shutdown, don’t we? But there is a trick here. If you release the keys in time, the device will not turn on. Actually, the procedure is as follows:

For iPhone 6s and below

  • Press and hold the Home and Power keys on your device at the same time for a few seconds until the screen goes dark;

  • As soon as the screen goes dark, immediately release them without waiting for the Apple logo to appear.

For iPhone 7 and 7 Plus

On the iPhone 7, by default, the reboot is performed using the Power and Volume Down keys, but this is just a reboot. If you need to turn off the iPhone 7 using the keys, then the procedure is as follows:

  • Press the Home and Power keys simultaneously and wait for about 4-5 seconds;

  • As soon as the screen goes dark, release them, after which the smartphone will no longer turn on to reboot.

For iPhone X

Here, the hard reset process is no different from the iPhone 6s. All you need to do is simply hold Home and Power for 4-5 seconds until the phone turns off. After this, immediately release the keys to avoid rebooting.

For models above iPhone X

In recent generations, the “hard reset” process itself is slightly different from all previous models. The procedure is as follows:

  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and immediately release it;

  • Next, hold down the volume down key and release;

  • Hold down the Power key for a few seconds until the screen goes dark. If you tighten and do not release the button in time, the phone will begin to reboot.

How to turn off iPhone 5

IPhone 5 and 5S were considered the most stable models and were popular for a long time. They work great, almost as good as the latest phones.

If the screen is frozen

To turn off the iPhone if the screen does not work, you should simultaneously hold down “Home” and “Power” for 5-6 seconds. After this, the phone will turn off without additional manipulation.

Important!

This shutdown reboots the device and resets all settings. This allows it to recover and also function normally after being turned on.

How to turn off iPhone XS and XR

  1. Press and hold one of the volume buttons and the Power button on the right side of the iPhone.
  2. A shutdown slider will appear on the screen. Swipe it and your iPhone XS or XR will turn off.

How to Force Restart Your iPhone XS or XR

Please note: each of the listed actions must be performed quickly and consistently.

  1. Press the Volume Up button and release it.
  2. Press the Volume Down button and release it.
  3. Press and hold the Power button until the device reboots.

How to enter iPhone XS and XR into Recovery mode

Points 4-6 must be completed sequentially and quickly (similar to the previous manual).

  1. Install iTunes on your computer.
  2. Make sure you are using the latest version of the program.
  3. Connect your iPhone XS or XR to your computer using a cable and open iTunes.
  4. Press the Volume Up button and release it.
  5. Press the Volume Down button and release it.
  6. Press and hold the Power button while rebooting. Release the button when the Connect to iTunes screen appears.
  7. iTunes will prompt you to update or restore your connected device.

To exit recovery mode, simply hold down Power until the iTunes connection screen disappears.

Assistive Touch

Attention! This method is only relevant if you have previously activated the Assistive Touch option and the screen sensor at least somehow reacts to your actions.

  • Now you only need to try to launch Assistive Touch on the smartphone screen (albeit on the working part of it);
  • Next, select the “Device” item in the menu, hold down “Screen lock” for a few seconds and turn off the phone.

Battery completely drained

Another option is to wait until your phone's battery is completely drained. Yes, the method is not the most thoughtful, but it should also be taken into account. And you can charge the device without any problems by simply connecting the device to a charger or connecting it to a computer via a USB cable. Just keep in mind that if the device turns off and you have set a password at the entrance, then when you turn it on with a broken screen or a non-working sensor, you will not be able to use it and unlock it.

Low temperature

This option is not the smartest, but for desperate users we decided to talk about it too. Many people probably know that Apple technology doesn’t really like the cold, and if the environment is really such that your hands freeze, then your phone most likely won’t turn on or will slow down. So, you can take your iPhone outside during the cold season, when the temperature is at its lowest, and there is a chance that it will turn off automatically. Another option is to put it in the freezer, but we do not advise you to do this, as you may lose the device completely.

Removing the Battery

And another extreme measure is to remove the battery. Yes, iPhones require you to disassemble half the phone to remove the battery, but you can do it if you know how to handle such devices and repairs. Otherwise, you need to contact only specialists, otherwise there is a possibility of making the situation even worse and “killing” the iPhone completely. But with even a little experience, you can completely disassemble the phone, having a starter set of screwdrivers for working with such devices and turn it off. In general, disassembly will take no more than 15 minutes.

Turning off an iPhone with a broken screen or a non-working sensor is not a problem, because the developers and designers from Apple have thought through everything to the smallest detail and created all the conditions for different situations. But remember: if your smartphone is under warranty, then it is better to take the device to the store where you purchased it. It is possible that the sensor does not work due to low-quality components installed at the factory. And if this is a widespread problem (this is usually known on the Internet), then you may even have to replace the entire device.

If you still can’t turn off the device using the keys, write about it in the comments and indicate the specific model of your phone. Our website specialists will contact you and help solve this problem. Despite the fact that we have described in detail the instructions for different generations, beginners may have problems, so we are ready to help each visitor to our site individually if the situation requires it.

Soft reboot

So, the device is malfunctioning and won’t turn off. The user presses the standard shutdown key, but instead the device does not respond to commands.

If your iPhone won't turn off, there are several ways to restart its operating system. They can be roughly divided into soft and hard, since the latter can lead to data loss or disabling some smartphone functions. These methods bypass the OS and therefore work even on devices that are frozen.

To turn off your smartphone “softly” without harming the operating system, you need to simultaneously press the Lock and Home buttons. The keys are held in this position for several seconds.

After some time, the gadget should automatically reboot and start working normally.

Sometimes the smartphone asks you to swipe along the red bar at the top of the screen.

This key combination, in normal operation, is responsible for creating a screenshot. But, to take a screenshot, the keys are pressed for 1-2 seconds, and in case of a reboot, much longer.

If you decide to send your phone in for repair, I recommend that you first contact the Apple hotline, where they will definitely help you with advice or at least tell you how to find the nearest service center. You can also find out the current cost of repairs on the website of one of Apple’s official partners, re:Store.

Ps - in my case I had to replace the entire device, fortunately the warranty had not yet expired and Apple replaced the device for free. I think many users will be grateful if you write in the comments which method helped you!

How to turn off iPhone if the sensor does not work?

If you just want to turn off the gadget rather than reboot it, you should proceed a little differently:

Step 1 . Press "Home" + "Power".

Step 2. Hold the buttons for 4-5 seconds - until the screen goes dark - then release them. Don't wait for the “bitten apple” to appear!

After this, you can turn on the smartphone in the usual way - by holding the “Power” button for 2-3 seconds.

A “hard reset” solves not only the problem with the sensor. A Hard Reset is also used if the iPhone becomes poorly connected to the network or consumes too much energy.

Discharging the battery

A more severe reboot method cannot be used if the button is damaged. The only thing that helps is completely discharging the phone and starting it again after connecting the charger.

We turn on any video on YouTube, turn the backlight to maximum and go drink tea. After a maximum of 40 minutes, the battery will be discharged to zero and the device will turn off. All that remains is to connect the charger to bring him to his senses.

Incorrect iOS update

Many users of the tenth iPhone and the new iPad have encountered this problem. After updating iOS? the gadget turns into a non-working “brick”. The problem can be easily resolved, even if the device does not boot beyond the logo.

In 99% of cases, the firmware may incorrectly affect the phone and lead to freezes due to incorrectly installed files. It is also possible that the manufacturer's servers provided incorrect information.

To fix the error, you need to force restart your phone. This can be done using a personal computer, cable and iTunes.

The phone is connected via a cable and the iTunes program is opened. Next, it is entered into recovery mode until the corporate logo appears on the screen. In the program, you must select the “Restore Software” menu and click “Update”.

iTunes will install the necessary components. It is important to ensure that the cable does not move away from the phone. Thus, the system will automatically erase the information and reset the settings to factory settings. Don't forget to back up to iCloud.

Lots of active applications

If a smart phone freezes at some stage of loading or operation, it is associated with a large number of background applications that load the processor and RAM of the device. To fix this problem, you need to disable programs running in the background that consume more resources and cause the device to lag.

You can do this by pressing the Home key twice. A list of active programs will appear on the screen. Click on each of them and hold the icon of the stopped program. After a slight vibration you need to confirm the action.

After double-clicking the Home button, it is possible to restore operation and restart the application.

Jailbreak installed

Jailbreaking an apple often causes the device to slow down and break down. Restoring a gadget after jailbreak is possible using DFU. All manipulations performed by the user do not harm the device if they are carried out correctly. After flashing the firmware, the iPhone does not slow down or crash.

You can start DFU mode like this:

  • press the “Home” and “Power” keys for 10 seconds;
  • count to ten, release power and continue to hold the Home menu.

Connecting iPhone to charger

This method is even simpler than the previous one, but... For this you will need a charger and an outlet, I took it to the second one. In frequent cases, the iPhone may not turn on simply because its battery is dead, especially if the phone is not new or it’s winter. At the same time, there is such a thing as “Deep battery discharge”, in which the device will need to spend some time charging to start. Therefore, it is necessary to connect the iPhone to a charger and allow it to become infected for at least 30 minutes.

iPhone won't charge?

When your iPhone starts charging, a picture of the battery appears on the screen. As a rule, 30 minutes is enough for the phone to turn on; if, after connecting to the charger, the iPhone does not turn on and the battery icon continues to light, the cable or the charging itself may be faulty.

iPhone charging

When you connect a faulty charger or cable, the iPhone will display a battery icon with a Lightning cable, so you need to connect a known-good cable and adapter.

iPhone won't charge

If charging does not start, keep a few tips:

  • First of all, plug the Lightning port of your iPhone; there are often cases when various particles get there, especially pieces of fabric from clothing pockets. Over time, these particles accumulate and become crushed, after which they begin to prevent the Lightning connector from fully entering the phone port and the contacts do not touch the mating part of the port, so charging does not begin. Blowing with compressed air and a regular toothpick are great for cleaning dirt, just remember, the contacts are very “delicate” and you do everything at your own peril and risk, so be careful not to damage them.
  • Make sure that the charger and cable you are using are working; the easiest way is to connect another working iPhone. And of course, for charging it is advisable to use the original charger and cable.
  • If you are used to charging your phone using wireless charging, or from the USB connector of a laptop, then a completely turned off and discharged iPhone may simply not charge, so you need to connect the phone to a charger powered by electricity.

How to turn off or restart an iPhone without the power button (trust)

Have you ever wondered how to restart or turn off your iPhone when the power button is broken?

The case is quite simple, only one. In iOS 11, you need to do the following. Go to “Settings” - “General”, and the “turn off” option is available at the bottom of the page.

You click on it and move the slider to the right. That's all. To start the smartphone, you need to connect to a power source (charger or computer via cable). You can also enable AssistiveTouch, which replaces physical buttons with on-screen equivalents.

To enable this feature, go to Settings → General → Accessibility → AssistiveTouch.

After turning on, a floating icon will appear on the screen, the position of which can be easily changed.

Tap this icon, then select Device → Lock or Advanced → Restart.

Plus, with AssistiveTouch, you can choose other things you can do with your iPhone's physical buttons.

Force restart iPhone with Face ID, iPhone SE (2nd generation), iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus

  1. Press and immediately release the Volume Up button.
  2. Press and immediately release the Volume Down button.
  3. Press and hold the side button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

Note. If your iPhone still won't turn on or freezes on startup, see the Apple Support article iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won't turn on or freezes.

How to Exit DFU Mode on iPhone XS, XR or X

The instructions to help you exit DFU mode for iPhone XK are simple, but, like all the others, they require precise execution of all step sequences:

  1. Press the volume up button and release.
  2. Repeat the steps with the volume down button.
  3. Press and hold the Power button until the Apple logo appears on the background screen of the XR or XS.

Recovery mode is complete and the smartphone can be used for its intended purpose.

If all the shutdown and reboot steps were completed correctly, but the device continues to perform poorly, then you may need to reset it to factory settings. In this case, the phone will return to the state in which it was originally after purchase.

If even this does not help, and the device continues to turn off and work poorly, then it is recommended to contact a service center, only there they will be able to solve this problem. However, such requests often result in the loss of some data, so it is better to save them in time.

Turning off and rebooting your Apple device is easy. There is a certain procedure for performing which the iPhone returns to normal operation. It is important to strictly follow the entire sequence, then you can restore the device quickly and without problems.

Possible consequences of a reboot without using a sensor

If you apply Hard Reset once or twice, there will definitely be no . If you constantly resort to a “hard reset”, there is a risk that the memory module will fail, as a result of which all data stored on the iPhone will be lost. There is a widespread opinion among users: each subsequent Hard Reset increases the likelihood that the memory will “crumble.” However, this has not been confirmed by experts.

You should resort to a “hard reboot” only as a last resort - when other methods to solve the problem have already been tried and have not brought any results.
