iOS 13 has been released. How to update iPhone and iPod touch - over the air and via PC

This year, for everyone who wanted to install the latest beta of iOS 13 for developers immediately after WWDC, Apple decided to complicate the task. If previously it was enough to download the developer’s profile, now everything has become much more difficult.

Apple probably decided that the phrase "developer beta for developers only" sounded logical. And this is actually true. But there is still a way to install the beta.

First, a disclaimer.

Beta is not early access to the system. This is a firmware version designed for developers to test their software on a new operating system. We recommend installing the beta only on smartphones that you do not use, because your “everyday” applications may simply not work. In addition, not all iOS 13 features work in the first beta for developers.

With the developer beta installed, your mobile bank, VKontakte, favorite instant messenger, or even standard software may not work. For example, on the beta iOS 13, which we installed on the iPhone SE, Pages, a standard Apple application, does not launch.

Therefore, I recommend thinking a few times before proceeding to the subsequent instructions. And remember that your favorite apps likely won't work properly on an iPhone running developer beta.

Apple is introducing two different beta versions of iOS. The first is a beta for developers. The second is a public beta version.

First, make a full backup via iTunes.

How to install iOS 13 on iPhone 5s

In fact, back in 2022, Apple announced that with the release of the 11th generation of the legendary smartphone and the new version of iOS, it would stop supporting outdated iPhones 6 and older. Therefore, owners of the 5S model did not receive notification of the release of the latest update.

New version of Apple software is popular due to its night mode

Unfortunately, the efforts of third-party developers and fighters against capitalists from Cupertino also came to nothing. There are no keys for installing iOS 13 on unsupported iPhones today.

Note! In fact, it makes no sense to install the thirteenth version of the firmware on the 5 S, since due to the large requirements, the phone’s characteristics will not support the normal operation of the software.

We are talking about a Twitter post by the popular hacker NighttigerFTW, who stated that he was able to bypass the Apple block. However, he could not tell how he managed to install iOS 13 on iPhone 6, and after a series of critical comments from colleagues, he said that it was a hoax.

Note! Many users believe that Apple has also stopped supporting the 6S and 6S Plus, but this is not the case.

Latest iOS version for iPhone 5s and 6

Apple stopped supporting the fifth and sixth generations of iPhones after the release of iOS 12.4.1. That is, this is the maximum version of the operating system that can be installed on 5, 5S, 6 and 6 plus.

You can see which iOS your phone has been updated to in the settings by going to the “General” section, then “About this device”. Opposite “Version” or “Software Update” the current firmware will be indicated. If it is lower than 12.4.1, then in the same “Basic” tab there is a “Software Update” item, where you can reflash the gadget to the latest supported version.

Important! The current list of smartphones that can be updated to version 13 starts with iPhone 7 and higher. iPhone SE is also supported.

Now it's time to download iOS 13 to a gadget that can cope with the firmware requirements. As stated above, the iPhone 6S and 7 are the oldest Apple phones that support the new software version.

Important! Before you start updating, it is better to create a backup copy of your device. This will protect the user from failures during installation or simply allow you to return to the old firmware if the new version is not to your liking.

To create a backup, you need:

  1. Go to the gadget settings.
  2. Go to the first section.
  3. Select iCloud.
  4. Click on the “Backup” item.
  5. Activate all sliders and wait a few minutes while the system archives the data.

Note! Internet access is strictly required when updating.

If the installation was postponed overnight, all that remains is to charge the phone before going to bed. In the morning it will be updated to the latest current version.

You can find out that a new version of the OS is available in the “Software Update” section

You can also update iOS to version 13 via your computer. But it is important to note that only an Apple PC is suitable for this. The instructions are as follows:

What is an iOS 13 Developer Profile

After the presentation in September, Apple invited licensed IT specialists to download the iOS 13 developer profile. In principle, this is a standard procedure, but with the release of the new firmware, this has become more difficult.

To begin with, it’s worth mentioning that the developer profile is a feature for those who create applications on the iOS platform. Simply put, by activating it, programmers and IT studios can test their product before the official release.

And if previously anyone could install iOS 13 beta, now, as Apple representatives say, “the beta firmware was created for developers and nothing more.” However, with the help of some loopholes, you can still activate the mode without a license.

The firmware information will indicate that this is a beta version

Important! If you install a beta version, many mobile applications, such as social networks or online banking, may not work. In principle, you should use this mode on the gadget that you don’t mind.

External storage support

iPadOS allows you to connect absolutely any external storage device to your tablet. This can be a regular flash drive, a portable hard drive, or a memory card in an adapter. No more searching for third-party software or purchasing MFI accessories. The Files app does a great job of this. And data is transferred in both directions without restrictions. The built-in file manager also now supports ZIP archives. This will allow you to perform the same operations with them on iPadOS as on your computer: unpacking and archiving.

How to access iOS 13 Beta profile

The principle of activating the iOS 13 beta profile is similar to simply updating the firmware using a PC on MAC X OS, which was mentioned above. But there is a small amendment - for this you will also need an Apple computer, but additionally with a beta version of the operating system. According to the official instructions, you need either beta macOS 10.15 Catalina or Xcode 11. But if you don’t have either, you can use special driver programs. For this, the familiar MobileDevice or any other analogue is suitable. The utility still requires a PC with an Apple operating system.

Full list of what you will need:

  • the aforementioned PC with the appropriate OS or program;
  • the latest iTunes or Finder installed (if you have the Catalina version);
  • USB cable;
  • downloaded iOS 13 beta (easy to find on the Internet);
  • iPhone, starting from the seventh generation or SE (which is not a pity).

Note! If any beta version of iOS is already installed on your smartphone, you need to remove it by going to the settings, the “General” section and the “Profile” item.

Once everything is ready, the process is as follows:

  1. Install a pre-downloaded utility (if the required OS version is not available).
  2. Launch iTunes or Finder.
  3. Connect iPhone via USB.
  4. Wait for synchronization.
  5. In iTunes or Finder (the utility should be the latest), click on the device icon and go to the “Browse” section in the menu on the left.
  6. After clicking on “Update” in the new field, you need to hold down the “Options” button, also known as “Shift”, and select the pre-downloaded beta firmware in the pop-up window.
  7. Wait until the iPhone finishes updating.
  8. Log out of iTunes and turn off your phone.

If everything is done correctly, developer rights will be activated, and the user will receive something like Root rights in Android.

Turn auto-update on or off

New iPad owners may not know that auto-updates on tablet computers start when the device is connected to the Internet, as well as to a charger.

However, not everyone likes it when the iPad itself goes into flashing mode. For example, a user needs to use a device, but it is unavailable due to the launch of the update procedure. Therefore, this function can be disabled. This is easy to do using this algorithm:

  • open the settings section;
  • select the “iTunes Store and App Store” menu;
  • scroll down the page;
  • find the subcategory “Automatic downloads”;
  • Move the slider to the “Off” position opposite the “Updates” line.

In the same way, but in reverse order, this function can be enabled.

What will probably be useful to do is disable auto-update via the mobile Internet. To do this, just below the menu considered, find the line “Cellular Data” and move the switch to the left. Then the latest firmware will be downloaded only when connected via Wi-Fi. This will significantly save traffic and also speed up the installation process itself.

Why iOS 13 won't install

There are several reasons why the new iOS may not be installed. For example:

  • incompatibility of firmware and gadget;
  • lack of Internet;
  • there is not enough space in the internal memory of the device;
  • The phone needs a forced reboot.

It is worth considering each reason separately. In the first case, as mentioned above, the owner of the gadget should check whether the iPhone model for updating is supported or not. If, after the firmware is released, the device does not receive a notification about the possibility of installing a new OS, then most likely this option is excluded.

As for the second point, a popular problem is incorrect cellular network settings. With a Wi-Fi connection, such problems are usually not observed, so you need to:

  1. Go to "Settings".
  2. Section "Cellular Communications".
  3. Go to the “Cellular Data” item.
  4. Make sure cellular transmission is turned on.

Important! If problems are observed, then go to the settings, to the “General” section, select “Reset network settings” and reboot the gadget.

The most common reason is a lack of internal memory on the device. The new iOS requires at least 5 GB. In this case, it is obvious that you need to check the gadget for the presence of this space. If not, then allocate the available volume.

As for the forced reboot, users discovered this bug when they first started updating to the new iOS. In this case you need:

  • On an iPhone 6S, press the “Home” and the “On”/”Off” button simultaneously. Hold until the Apple logo lights up on the screen;
  • On the seven, simultaneously hold down the volume down and power buttons. Similarly, wait for the logo to appear;
  • On eight and newer, first quickly press and immediately release the volume up button, then just as quickly do this with the adjacent volume down button. Then press and hold the “On”/”Off” button.

Important! On the latest versions, after a reboot, the system will additionally ask you to log in using your fingerprint.

iOS 13.3 is already available at the beginning of 2020

Summarizing the above, it turns out that the new software from Apple released in 2022 no longer supports the company’s smartphones released before 2014. Users of these gadgets, unlike others, did not receive update notifications. Owners of iPhones 6s and higher can install iOS 13 as standard through settings or by connecting to iTunes on a PC. With the release of a new operating system, developers still have access to a test mode.
