For me, the iPod touch has long been the only and main iOS device. I downloaded it from the Internet, looked for new tracks, added albums to iTunes, edited tags and covers. In general, I was doing everything that people now don’t do in their free time, because the world is ruled by streaming services, where everything is beautifully laid out on shelves and playlists.
Remembering the times ten years ago, compared to the iPhone, its brother, the iPod touch, had a more impressive amount of memory. For example, in 2009 you could buy a player with 64 GB, while for the iPhone 3GS only 32 GB was available in the maximum version. The 3.5-inch screen seemed large enough; I watched hundreds of hours of video on the player. It replaced a small TV for me in those days when streaming video could only be discussed in debates on forums.
If you remember, the first generations of the iPod touch had a gorgeous, mirror-polished back. But it also scratched so quickly that after a month of use, the brand new iPod looked like a thoroughly used device.

If in years gone by, when mobile Internet was expensive and 4G networks seemed like a distant future, the player could still claim a place in your pocket, but now it feels like a strange relic of the past.

The box in which the gadget comes is not much different from the fifth model. It offers 2 levels of protection, as the device is placed in a transparent plastic case, which is covered with a more durable layer on top.
In addition to the iPod, the package includes a user manual, stickers and EarPod headphones. A separate box is provided for the latter. They sound good, but are not durable. The same headphones are included with the iPhone 6.

You have to live with the iPod touch's performance, because by today's standards it's not great. The screen has a pleasant color rendering, so your eyes don’t get tired in the evenings when you watch YouTube, but four inches is already catastrophically not enough.
There is no fingerprint scanner or face unlock, and the Apple A10 Fusion processor is three years old, like in the iPhone 7. Yes, it still has enough potential and you can get stuck in games, and there are a great many of them in the App Store.
What’s important is that the player will run on iOS 13 and will receive updates for several more years. But the model of the previous, sixth generation is already being sent to the shelf: it will not see the latest version of iOS.
The simplest model gets 32 GB of internal memory, then there is a 128 GB version, and the Tsar Player with 256 GB tops the line. Of course, there are no memory cards, but you can use the space of the iCloud Drive cloud service or listen to music over Wi-Fi.
A player with two cameras: a simple 1.2 MP front camera and a more advanced 8 MP main camera. The quality is the most ordinary, the player cannot compete with the iPhone XS, and there is no 4K video recording here, everything is very simple. So if you consider the player as a kind of budget iPhone with a good camera, then this is not about it.

For the iPod touch 3G, very good figures were announced: 30 hours in mp3 playback mode and 6 hours when playing a video. In practice, everything turned out to be somewhat different - last year’s model lasted 32 hours 19 minutes in mp3 playback mode, i.e. significantly more than stated. For the current model, which has become lighter and thinner, the stated time is even longer - 40 and 7 hours, respectively, but in practice the result was slightly worse. Testing when playing mp3 was carried out for a set of files with a bitrate of 128 kbit/s and half the volume level; under these conditions, the player lasted 38 hours 24 minutes - close to the stated, but still not enough. In the video file playback mode, an mpeg4 (H264) file with a bitrate of 1.5 Mbit/s was used (the file was obtained using the Free Video to iPod converner, iPod touch preset) at half the volume and backlight brightness. The measurement result turned out to be even longer than stated - 7 hours 57 minutes.
Not for everyone, but people will appreciate it
This is how we gradually approached the issue of positioning. Well, who needs a player now? I’m tempted to say: “No one.” Especially when you look at the scary prices. An iPod touch with 32 GB of memory costs 18,990 rubles, a 128 GB model costs 28,190 rubles, and a version with 256 GB of memory costs 37,390 rubles.
But if you think about it, but seriously? As a gift for a child? Why not. After all, this is the most affordable and modern iOS device.
In the restaurant business, iPod touch is also used when taking orders from customers. It is also used in clinics or stores as a mobile cash register. Application developers also remain: the player replaces the iPhone and you don’t have to spend money on an expensive device.
Finally, it's a player! Recently I saw a man in a cafe with a Nokia N95 in one hand and a blue iPod touch in the other - here's a scenario for using an Apple player. Although there are very, very few such people, a separate device for listening to music is already a rare luxury.

In the modern world with wild competition, there is no place for pass-through devices with an incomprehensible audience. Apple has its own thoughts on this matter: the company has a clear idea of who might need this or that equipment. Therefore, the iPod touch was not “killed”, but was left, improved and sent to store shelves.
If we consider it as a device for corporate customers, then buyers from the business world with their own specific use cases will be happy.
For everyone else, the iPod touch will remain a beautiful but strange toy. It’s nice to hold it in your hands, to remember past times, but then you still put it aside and return to the phone with a large screen. Sorry, buddy, but you no longer have a place in our universe.
