Performance difference
The most important difference between the Slim revision and the Pro revision is the hardware. To be more precise, the performance of the Pro version is approximately 2 times better.
This is determined by the following parameters:
- The video card was increased from 1.8 to 4.2 Teraflops.
- Although the same processor is used, the PRO has a clock speed of 2.1 versus 1.6.
- Among other things, an additional Gigabyte has appeared in the RAM.
The GPU has also undergone changes. It became twice as powerful, while the frequency increased from 800 to 900 MHz.
What did these changes affect?
Firstly, loading screens have become much shorter.
Secondly, many modern games run much better on Pro. They drop less in FPS and slow down.
And thirdly, all this was done so that the console could improve modern graphics.
Slim
Being, in fact, an upgrade of the previous version, PS4 Slim differs from PS4 in less thickness and weight (by thirty and sixteen percent, respectively). The designers gave it rounded edges, but in return they took away the gloss from the body. And now it is matte.
Game console PlayStation 4 Slim
In addition, Slim is less susceptible to heating than PS4 (about seven degrees), is ten decibels less noisy and consumes almost a third less electricity.
In addition to improving the cooling system, the touch control keys were replaced with the good old mechanical version.
Although the processor, memory and performance remain identical to the base version, the new version has two USB 3.1 ports (instead of one 3.0) and more advanced Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (a/b/g/n/ac and 4.0 instead of b/g /n and 2.1).
The price difference between PS4 and Slim is especially pleasant for the buyer.
The original that originally appeared dropped in price from four hundred US dollars to three hundred and fifty, and the newly released modernization starts from three hundred.
Image quality
Due to the improvement of hardware, PROshka acquired a number of graphic capabilities.
Now, instead of the old 1080p resolution, you can now enjoy 4K images. True, at a stable 30 fps. But with Full HD resolution, now any game runs at 60 fps without any problems.
Any PS4 Pro owner can choose whether to look at a beautiful 4K picture, or vote on performance.
True, if the game had such settings.
PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro: the difference in games
The most interesting thing is how the differences in hardware affected the difference we see in games. PS4 Pro was the first among PlayStation consoles to somehow learn to operate games in 4K resolution, but gamers with regular Full HD screens were also not forgotten. One of the first advantages of Pro was recently revealed by Sony's high-profile exclusive, Horizon Zero Dawn:
For previously released games, their developers have prepared special patches for PS4 Pro. Some of the authors chose to double the frame rate in those projects where it did not exceed 30 FPS or exceeded it, but was unstable.
Others have improved detail and visuals. This is how one of Sony's main hits of recent times is changing - The Last of Us on PS3, PS4 and PS4 Pro.
By the way, some individual developers managed to increase both FPS and effects using new capacities. However, let's be honest, there are few such examples.
Therefore, if “killing two birds with one stone” did not work out, the developers give Pro users a choice. For example, the creators of Rise of the Tomb Raider provide players with separate modes. In one it will be possible to achieve standard graphics and 60 FPS. In the other - maximum visual effects for Full HD, but only with 30 frames instead of 60.
The current Tomb Raider also has mode No. 3 for 4K TVs (it is also added with the patch). There is no maximum FPS and effects turned up to maximum, but the user will receive highly detailed images.
However, other developers make their games look better on PS4 Pro without any modes by default. For example, The Witcher 3 players will see the following differences on an enhanced Sony console:
The total list of games that received a special patch for PS Pro or, in the case of new projects, initially support the enhanced hardware of the updated console, is already quite large. Here's just a small part of it:
Old games for which the developers never released special patches will work on the powerful PlayStation as usual. To make them look better, Sony itself came up with a trick here, but we will talk about this below, in the section about PlayStation OS.
Dimensions and design
Due to the fact that the Playstation 4 Pro was equipped with more powerful hardware, the case also had to be changed. Externally, PROshka looks a whole block thicker.
If we compare the dimensions, the Slim is 3 cm smaller in width and length, and 1.5 cm thinner.
Accordingly, it weighs 1.2 kg lighter than its powerful sister.
Characteristics
The productivity of the Slim model, equal to the original PS4 model, has not increased and has the following indicators:
- 8-core AMD Jaguar processor (frequency 1.6 GHz);
- 8 GB video memory;
- Video card chipset - Radeon with a productivity of 1.84 TFLOP;
- Separate building size - 1920×1080 (HD);
- HDD - 500 GB (1 TB version).
At the time the PS4 was released, it was fighting for the main competitor of the Xbox One, Microsoft. While on the fourth PlayStation you can play all games at 1080p, the competitor can only play at 900p. What's worse for Slim is the Pro version and the latest Xbox One X, although it is still not officially sold in Ukraine.
USB ports and other nice little things
Proshka was provided with pleasant little things. She now has 1 more USB connector. HDMI changed the protocol from 1.6 to 2.0.
The Bluetooth connection has protocol 4.0. And this allows you to better connect with wireless devices.
The Wi-Fi connector has also been improved. There are much fewer problems with network interruptions. Application loading speed has increased. This is especially important for AAA projects that take up a huge amount of space on the disk.
PlayStation 4 Pro
PlayStation 4 Pro is the remaining version of the game console from Sony. And in addition to the Slim version, there were significant improvements in terms of strength compared to the basic version of PS4.
Graphics chip and processor
The Pro version has a thicker graphics chip, lower than the previous versions. While its predecessors have a productivity of 1.84 Tflops, the Pro version has a GPU productivity of 4.2 Tflops, and the gaming process will be smoother.
The processor has 8 cores, as in previous versions, but its frequency has increased from 1.6 GHz to 2.1 GHz. The GDDR memory of the PS4 Pro, like the previous PS4, is 8 GB. The throughput has increased from 176 GB/s to 218 GB/s, and this will allow you to increasingly capture new locations in games.
Memory
While the simplest versions of PS4 have the ability to accommodate HDD memory capacity of 500 GB or 1 TB, the Pro version has the option of 1 TB of memory.
Image brightness
On PS4 and PS4 Slim, you can broadcast the game on YouTube, Twich, or you can simply record it in no place, lower HD (1080x720). The new set-top box allows you to work in FullHD (1920×1080). A welcome bonus is that from a TV that supports 4K, you can take screenshots with similar extensions.
There will be no exclusive games on PS4 Pro (games that are exclusive to the last generation of consoles within the same manufacturer). There will be no such thing, because the Pro version is not a radically new device, but rather a modification of the fourth generation of game consoles from Sony. Games that run on Pro can be played with the same success on the base PS4 and on the Slim version.
If you switched from Slim to Pro, then you just need to log in to your account on the new console and all the games that were previously added to PS4 and PS4 Slim will be available to you.
All the distance to the right is in the hands of the robbers. They release special patches that are available on the Pro version:
- raise the frame rate there to less than 30 FPS;
- increase the detail;
- improve visual effects;
- add new modes.
Opportunities for VR
The PS4 Pro's improved performance allows it to run VR projects. This is already a plus for those who wanted to try virtual reality.
A kind of cherry on the cake among other bonuses of the console.
Slim does not have this option due to weaker hardware. Keep this in mind if you are still planning to buy a console of this generation.
New DualShock 4 and PS Camera
Finally, along with the new game consoles in the fall of 2016, Sony also launched an updated line of key accessories for them. So, in particular, the console’s main controller, DualShock 4, has been updated.
The updated version has a new indicator light on the front panel, and in addition to Bluetooth, it also supports USB communication. This slightly upgraded DualShock 4 comes bundled with both the PS4 Pro and PS4 Slim. It is also compatible with the very first model of the fourth PlayStation.
In turn, the PlayStation Camera accessory is now presented in a much more compact case and is equipped with a convenient mount. The PlayStation Camera can be used both in some individual games for PS4 like Until Dawn, and for PlayStation VR, where it is a necessary device for operation.

Price
If we talk about the output price of the consoles, they varied significantly. The difference was seven thousand. Now Pro is also more expensive than its sister, but with a smaller difference.
And prices have decreased since the release of PS5. If earlier Pro cost well over 30, now you can buy it for 25-26 thousand. And Slim costs five thousand less.
Unfortunately, both versions are now difficult to find from official distributors. They are only available at flea markets or resellers.
PlayStation 4 Slim
Design
The first thing you can appreciate without looking at the prefix is the design. The PS4 Slim case can be called elegant due to its elegant design and matte color scheme. The device fits harmoniously in the interior with a TV of the same color.
In the middle of the case there is a groove where USB ports are stored, as well as a Blu-ray drive, with outputs on the opposite side for connecting other devices. In the older Pro model, the body is divided not into two, but into three parts, making it visually easier to separate the consoles.
Which console to choose
Now you know the difference between PS4 and PS4 Pro. What to buy depends on your preferences. PRO is chosen in the following cases:
- If you want to admire the picture in 4K;
- I'm worried about game loading times;
- They are going to play Wiar games.
For everything else, the Slim version will be enough. Plus, it is lighter, takes up less space and is cheaper.

PS4 Pros:
- Multiplayer game . The console is licensed not only for “solo” games, but also for games of 2-6 people. There are a lot of social games on PS4, such as Just Dance and games from the PlayLink line.
- Easy to replace HDD . To do this, you need to remove a special cover and unscrew one screw - and you can install a larger volume storage unit or replace it with an SSD. To be clear, on the Xbox game console from Microsoft, in order to replace the HDD you need to remove the ice from the device.
- Simplicity in connection . In order for the console to fully query, you need to create three shortcuts:
