How long does an iPhone battery last, how to count charging cycles and when is it time to change the battery?

What is the iPhone battery life? In this article we will talk about the type of battery installed in the iPhone, how to assess its condition and how to charge it correctly.

What type of batteries are installed in the iPhone?

Every iPhone comes with a lithium-ion battery. They have enough advantages over “traditional” batteries: they charge faster, work longer, and weigh less.

How is the iPhone battery charged?

Battery charging consists of two phases. During the first - from 0 to 80% - the battery is replenished with energy quickly (the exact charging time depends on whether the device is in use, settings and other factors). The second - from 80 to 100% - is called compensation, it “weaken” the electric current and thereby extends the life of the iPhone battery.

What is a “recharge cycle” and why is it important?

One cycle is when you discharge your iPhone from 100% to zero. This can be done either at one time or several times. Example: within a day the battery was discharged by 75%. You charged it to 100% and continued using it. One charging cycle will end when you have used up another 25% of the charge (“yesterday’s 75% + today’s 25%).

What are we talking about? The iPhone battery naturally has a resource. After 500 full charging cycles, the battery capacity of an Apple smartphone will decrease by 15-20%. In practice, 500 charging cycles is 1.5-2 years of smartphone operation. After about 3-4 years, the battery capacity will correspondingly decrease by 50% of the value that the iPhone had out of the box. That’s when it makes sense to think about replacing the battery - after all, you will probably notice that your iPhone, for example, no longer “survives” until the evening and lets you down at the most necessary moment.

Temperature mismatch

At the beginning of the article, it was already said that Apple designed its smartphone for stable operation at the lowest possible temperature of -5 °C. Thus, users of even new iPhones in our country are faced with the fact that the battery either discharges faster, or the phone may turn off at 50% of the charge, and when turned on, it will report that less than 10% of the battery remains.

Although this happens less often with new devices. Most often they just start to sit down faster. So, in one winter, the volume of your battery can decrease from 100% to 90%.

Is it possible to find out the number of recharge cycles completed directly on the iPhone?

Over time, you may start to feel like your iPhone is starting to drain faster. It may be time to contact a service center and replace the battery. But has it really exhausted its resource? There are applications that allow you to find out the number of charge cycles, but they are mostly designed for viewing this information on a computer. In other words, you will have to connect your smartphone to your computer and use special utilities.

Unfortunately, Apple does not officially provide data on iPhone charging cycles, although such data is easy to view on the company's laptops. But there is a way, which few people know about, to find out the number of charge cycles directly on the iPhone. We'll tell you how to do this.

Mobile app

You can find out the number of charge cycles for your iPhone battery using the free Battery Life app. It is available on the App Store.

  • Open the utility. After startup, the main screen will appear, showing the percentage of battery wear.
  • Go to "Raw Data". Numerical data will be displayed, including cycles (line “Cycles”).

How to find out the number of battery charge cycles on an iPhone

1. Go to Settings → Privacy → Analytics & Improvements.

2. Activate the “ Share for iPhone and Watch ” feature if you have it disabled.

Please note that if you previously disabled this function, you will only be able to receive the required information about the state of your iPhone battery the next day. After all, it is this option that allows the device to collect specific information for its subsequent sending to Apple. A deactivated function simply does not allow you to collect the necessary information. Only a day after activation, the device will save technical data for analytics.

3. A page will open on which you need to find lines of the characteristic form log-aggregated-date-xxxxxx.ips . Obviously, the name contains the date the log file was created. You'll need the line with the most recent one.

4. Scroll through the opened document about 2/3 (a little more than half) and find the desired word BatteryCycleCount in the text. The number located immediately below BatteryCycleCount between the words integer will mean the exact number of charge-discharge cycles of your battery. In our case - 259.

If you couldn’t find the BatteryCycleCount line directly on your iPhone, send this document to your computer, open it using Notepad on Windows or TextEdit on Mac. Using the search, finding the text BatteryCycleCount will not be difficult.

AccuBattery for Android

The AccuBattery application reads information from the battery controller and displays it in a visual shell. The utility helps you choose the most optimal charge, determine the applications that consume the most power from your gadget, and find out about the current battery wear.

Development of AccuBattery began after Dutch engineers tried to extend battery life. This is not about slowing down discharge during the day. The goal is to ensure that the battery does not lose capacity after many months of use. The problem is also relevant because many modern gadgets come with non-removable batteries.

The developers conducted a series of tests, as a result of which important conclusions were drawn. There is no need to charge the device throughout the night, since during reboots the power source loses its capacity. The reason for this is the chemical processes that occur in the battery.

Mobile devices have an internal switch that stops charging when reaching 100% while power continues to flow, which affects the oxidation resistance of certain chemicals. It turns out that to fully charge the tablet or phone you need to disconnect it from the power supply as soon as possible, after 100% charging.

The most optimal battery charging option is 80%. The AccuBattery app has a built-in alarm that alerts you when the optimal charge level is reached. It is located in the “Charging” menu.

"Charging" section

At the top of the working window there is a roundness, in the green part of which the current percentage of charge is demonstrated, and in the blue part – acceptable. The threshold of 80% is set by default, but it can be lowered or increased. To do this, you need to move the slider and pay attention to how this affects the damage to the battery.

Increase

A little further on, a forecast is displayed for mixed use about low battery, screen off and screen on. The ratings are based on the user's habits while working with the gadget over the past seven days.

How to find out about iPhone battery status: Apple's official solution

However, in the iOS settings there is still a section Settings → Battery → Battery status, which contains information about the current state of the iPhone battery (in detail).

How can I find out the number of charge cycles my iPhone has completed on a Mac or Windows computer?

Use iBackupBot for Windows and macOS computers.

After installation, connect your iPhone, select it in the Devices section, click on More Information and look at the number opposite CycleCount - this is the number of recharge cycles already completed.

Below you will also find other useful information about the battery of your iPhone - the capacity according to the passport (DesignCapacity), the actual capacity after full charging (FullChargeCapacity), the level of the current battery charge (BatteryCurrentCapacity).

Charge your iPhone battery correctly

  • It is not recommended to bring the charge level to 100%. If possible, it should be kept in the region of 20 – 80%. This way, you won’t “overstress” the battery cells, and recharge cycles will be slower.
  • There is one exception to the previous rule. It is useful to completely discharge your iPhone to 0% once a month, and then charge it to 100%.
  • There is no need to leave the iPhone to charge overnight - the electrons in a lithium battery must move, which does not happen when connected to a power outlet for many hours.
  • Avoid extremely cold and extremely hot temperatures. Batteries “love” the temperature, which is 15 degrees Celsius.
  • There's no need to buy wireless charging cases for your iPhone. Wireless charging itself creates excess heat, which harms the battery.
