Replacing the battery on an iPhone from “A” to “Z”: when and how to change it, which one and where to buy

Sooner or later, there comes a time when the iPhone no longer holds a charge as well as before. As a rule, this is due to the fault of iOS - it becomes more powerful and requires more resources.

But it often happens that the battery has simply lost capacity. He is no longer physically able to work as much as he worked before.

Then it's time to change your iPhone battery.

We'll tell you how to do this at home. Using the iPhone 6s as an example.

How to change your iPhone battery yourself

Replacement technology may vary slightly depending on iPhone model

ATTENTION . Perform all of the above procedures at your own risk. If you are not sure about something, it is better to turn to specialists.

We will need:

• Phillips (1.2 mm, 2.2 mm, 2.8 mm, 2.9 mm) and pentagonal 3.4 mm screwdrivers • Suction cup • Dielectric spatula or pick • Tweezers • New battery for iPhone:

Below are selected high-quality batteries from AliExpress

Lift the front panel of the device using a suction cup and a plastic tool with a sharp edge:

This procedure can be performed using the most ordinary suction cup and the most ordinary mediator. Having firmly pressed the suction cup to the front panel of the device, you need to pry it with a pick and open it to the top edge, like the cover of a book.

Step-by-step instruction

Step 1 . Turn off the smartphone and wait 10 seconds. Unscrew the two bottom 3.4 mm screws. The bottom of the display will rise slightly.

Step 2 . Attach the suction cup to the lower left corner of your smartphone. Take a pick or spatula and carefully pry up the bottom of the display.

Step 3 . Gently pull up with the suction cup, while simultaneously prying up the sides of the device with a mediator or dielectric spatula. The display will begin to move away with characteristic clicks.

Important! Pull carefully, without sudden movements, so as not to damage the smartphone.

On iPhone 6s and higher models, the display is glued. You need to carefully move a pick or a thin scalpel along the display, as if cutting it off.

Step 4 . Having freed all the display grooves, open the iPhone to an angle of up to 90 degrees.

On iPhone 7 and above models, the cover opens to the side.

Step 5 . Unscrew the two screws securing the battery cable holder: 2.9 mm screw – red, 2.2 mm screw – yellow.

Step 6 . Using tweezers, remove the plate.

Step 7 . Using a spudger, disconnect the battery cable. Move the cable away from the connector.

Step 8 . Unscrew four screws: three 1.2 mm screws are red, one 2.8 mm screw is yellow.

Step 9 . Remove the LCD holder.

Step 10 . Disconnect the front camera cable.

Step 11 . Disconnect the touch display cable and data cable. All. You can now put the display aside.

Step 12 . Using blunt tweezers, peel back the tips of the two adhesive strips on the bottom edge of the battery.

Please note that the tweezers should not have sharp ends. Otherwise, you risk puncturing the lithium-ion battery. And dangerous substances will leak out of it.

If you want to make your life easier, remove the Taptic Engine module by unscrewing the 2 screws securing it. Then the tape will have nothing to tear at and it will be much easier to pull it out.

Step 13 . Gently pull one adhesive strip towards the bottom of the iPhone. Pull until you are completely free. So that the strip does not break.

If the strip still breaks:

It is necessary to carefully pry up the battery with a bank card, trying not to damage the outer shell and the controller, which is located at the bottom of the battery. Only pry where there are no buttons.

Step 14 . Carry out a similar procedure with the other strip. Don't forget to hold the battery.

IMPORTANT . Before gluing the battery back, you need to connect the display to the phone, connect the battery and check its functionality. And only then continue the reassembly process.

When reinstalling the battery, you need to stick the tape (included with the batteries) first on the battery, and only then stick it to the smartphone.

In the case of the iPhone 6s Plus, you need to fold all three strips into one bundle and pull them at the same time. Pull so that they do not touch the components of the smartphone, otherwise you risk tearing them.

Step 15 . Reassemble the iPhone.

When assembling from model 6s and higher, it is necessary to apply a dust/moisture-proof adhesive. You can buy it on AliExpress.

Actually, that's all. You were able to successfully (or not so successfully) replace your iPhone battery.

Problems that may arise

Loss of performance

The worst that can happen if you disassemble the device yourself is loss of functionality: partial or complete. If you decide to do everything on your own, then you are your own guarantee. So you will have to compensate for the mistakes of your crooked hands. However, there is no need to panic right away. Perhaps you just missed something, forgot to connect some connector. Disassemble the device again, go through all the instructions and make sure that every bolt is screwed in and every plug is connected. There is a possibility that the battery you purchased is damaged or does not fit your iPhone model. This often happens if you buy cheap, non-original batteries.

If something like this happens: deal with the hardware or take the phone to a service center. Some useful tips:

  1. If the Home button and the conversational microphone stop working, then the problem is localized in the lower loop of the device. Double-check the connectors on the bottom of the device.
  2. If the screen begins to shimmer when pressed, it means that the battery is not lying tightly: something is sticking out and pressing through the screen. Either you did not install the battery carefully enough, or the battery does not fit your device model.
  3. The iPhone began to turn off and reboot spontaneously. The problem is most likely a damaged motherboard. Most often the problem occurs because the screws were mixed up during assembly. Longer ones were planted in place of shorter ones, which led to damage. Disassemble and reassemble the device, carefully examining the fastenings. If you are lucky, the device will work as it should. If not, the damage is irreversible and the board needs to be replaced.

Loss of warranty

Of course, if the repair was not carried out by an Apple service center, the warranty will be void. And no, you won’t be able to fool service centers. Apple, like many other manufacturers, implants special sensors into the device. And if the device is opened, the counter inside the sensor increases. The service center employees will reset this sensor, but for this you will have to thoroughly hack the operating system. But why do this? If your phone is under warranty, why didn’t you contact the service center?

So now you know how to replace the battery on your iPhone. Remember that the devil's accuracy is necessary in this matter, otherwise the device may be damaged. And do not forget that any unauthorized opening of the device leads to loss of warranty. So if you bought your phone recently, try to get a free battery replacement at a service center or wait until the warranty period ends.

Reasons for urgent battery replacement

Before you figure out how to change the battery on an iPhone 5s, you need to make sure that a replacement is really needed.

To do this, it is enough to study the main “symptoms” indicating the final loss of a working resource in the form of capacity.

Ideally, the battery on an iPhone should be changed at least once a year - under such conditions, battery life will be at the highest level. If gradual charge consumption does not cause much discomfort to the user, the frequency of the procedure can be reduced.

However, the following signs are a direct path to replacing the battery:

  1. If the device discharges quickly, losing 2-3% in an instant.
  2. If the charge level is more than 20-30%, the smartphone turns off, and when it is turned on again, the display shows a notification about the need to connect the charger.
  3. If the seal of the display is broken and it begins to move slightly away from the body.
  4. If your phone has cracks.

Any of these problems is a direct path to an urgent battery replacement.

The last sign may indicate a number of other malfunctions, for example, mechanical damage to the smartphone and expansion of the case .

We recommend: Review of phones with a powerful battery and a good camera

By the way, the last defect often occurs when gas forms inside the battery, which accumulates in large quantities under the shell and gradually inflates it.

If the battery's "life force" has reached its end, the casing may swell so much that the case or display will simply be damaged.

Required Tools

In fact, the replacement procedure does not require much time and effort. If this is the first time you are doing this, it is important to find the right tools and tools that are designed for Apple equipment. Professional craftsmen have full-fledged universal tools at their disposal, which make working much easier and more convenient. They are sold in the same stores where additional components for the smartphone itself are sold.

If the replacement is not urgent, you can purchase the battery on some resource, for example, AliExpress or Ebay. Some sellers offer ready-made kits on the market, which include both batteries and accessories for replacing them.

The kit should include:

  • Two screwdrivers.
  • Sucker.
  • Plastic spatula.

If a replacement is needed as quickly as possible, and there is simply no time to wait, you will have to go shopping to the nearest store that sells spare parts for electronics.

As for the detailed replacement guide, it consists of several steps. Moreover, they are also relevant for other 5th generation Apple iPhone models, since they are all built using a similar method.

Make an appointment with Apple

Apple's $29 battery replacement program is simple and inexpensive for iPhone 6s owners—as long as you have time to visit an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Representative and they have the parts available. (Some stores have a 2-3 month wait list for certain battery replacements, including iPhone 6s.)

General recommendations for repairs

  • Always use good lighting—the device's smart components are small and you'll need plenty of light to see what you're doing.
  • Maintain a clean, organized workspace to avoid losing or mixing up any components.
  • Group your screws so you can keep track of where they came from. Most screws cannot be replaced.
  • Apply enough heat to loosen the adhesive, but not enough to damage the device.
  • At any point during the repair, if the adhesive becomes difficult to separate, apply more heat.
  • After peeling off the adhesive, keep the case and screen in close proximity until you disconnect the flex cable.

general information

The fifth generation of the legendary iPhone smartphones was released back in 2012. The appearance of three models in the line became an incredible boom in the world of mobile electronics. In a short period of time, the product gained great demand and occupied a leading niche in the market. However, soon users of these devices began to worry about the problem of rapid discharge, turning off the gadget in the cold and other troubles associated with the device’s built-in battery. As a result, users began to wonder how to change the battery on the iPhone 5s, whether it can be done independently, how much it costs and what effort it requires.

It is impossible to say that the battery of these phones is poorly made or defective. The fact is that every mobile device is forced to cope with heavy loads, perform a lot of complex tasks, display high-quality videos and be used for hours on end to surf the Internet. If we also take into account listening to music, turning on the maximum brightness of the display and wireless interfaces in the form of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, then energy consumption occurs much faster.
