Safety with the new SPU
The SPU module (Secure Processing Unit) is responsible for storing and processing biometrics. Now it is where sensitive data such as fingerprints, iris scans, voice casts, facial depth shots, bank details, user encryption keys, application encryption keys and SIM data are stored and processed.
If the malware takes over a single application or even the entire system, it should not reach the SPU module. Data from the fingerprint scanner and facial depth sensor are sent and read directly through the SPU, bypassing other parts of the system that are busy, for example, with graphics processing or playing music.
This unit has a separate Cortex-M3 processor, a pseudo-random number generator, its own memory, a separate battery and an operating system.
However, the decision about where to store and process authorization data lies with application developers. Developers will have to choose which operations to process in the old and familiar isolated environment of existing chips, and which ones to process in the new SPU.
