The best pure Android + Android One smartphones of 2022

Android One is Google's software for smartphones. This software is usually called “pure” or “naked” Android, that is, phones with this software come out of the box without a shell. The decision has positive and negative sides. The advantages are obvious: improved optimization and speed of the phone, flexible customization, instant updates directly from Google, better support.

Disadvantages: people find the appearance and interface unattractive - third-party launchers look better. The second drawback is the lack of “starter” programs; sometimes you even have to install a music player, although there is a set of Google applications in Android One. Branded shells like MIUI come with pre-installed programs for monitoring traffic, blocking unwanted calls, utilities for energy saving, and even a built-in Root and ad blocker. All this is available on Android One, but the phones don’t have it out of the box.

Below is a list of phones participating in the Android One program in order of “freshness”.

Google Pixel 5 8/128GB

Google Pixel 5 turned out to be very unusual.

For example, it has the same size frames around the display, and the back of the body is finished with so-called bio-resin, which is applied to a metal back. By the way, the case itself turned out to be relatively compact. The front panel is located in the very corner of the screen and does not interfere at all. The display supports 90 Hz.

The performance is more than decent, although the processor is not top-end - Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G 5G. However, 8 GB of RAM and proprietary optimization do their job.

As always, the camera takes great pictures - on par with the best camera phones.

  • Screen diagonal: 6 inches
  • Screen resolution: 2340×1080
  • Weight: 151 g
  • Number of SIM cards: 2
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G 5G
  • Memory capacity: 128 GB
  • RAM capacity: 8 GB
  • Battery capacity: 4000 mAh
  • Rear camera: dual 16/12.2 MP
  • Front camera: 8 MP
  • Memory card support: no

Google Pixel 5a 5G 128Gb

The Pixel 5a is a budget version of the Pixel 5, although you wouldn't know it at first glance.

Oddly enough, the younger version received a larger diagonal screen - 6.43 inches. While the back of the Pixel 5 has a bright texture, the back cover here looks more like plastic, although it is covered with biorubber (based on metal). There is no wireless charging, and the degree of protection against water is lower - IP67. The screen is great, but the refresh rate is 60Hz.

But the processor is the same - Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G 5G, while the amount of RAM is slightly lower - 6 GB. The camera, according to the technical specifications, is the same as the one in the Pixel 5. The battery capacity here is higher - 4680 mAh.

  • Screen diagonal: 6.34 inches
  • Screen resolution: 2400×1080
  • Weight: 183 g
  • Number of SIM cards: 2
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G 5G
  • Memory capacity: 128 GB
  • RAM capacity: 6 GB
  • Battery capacity: 4680 mAh
  • Rear camera: dual 16/12.2 MP
  • Front camera: 8 MP
  • Memory card support: no

Nokia X20 – a reliable mid-class model

With the X20, Nokia isn't trying to reinvent the wheel and delivers a mid-range smartphone that couldn't be more classic.

What we liked:

  • Three years of software support
  • Decent performance and 5G

  • Good autonomy

With a 6.6-inch screen, it's quite bulky. With wide edges and considerable thickness. Therefore, using with one hand will be difficult.

We'll categorize the LCD panel used as 'average' as it struggles to stand out, be it in terms of brightness, colorimetry or 60Hz refresh rate. As for the biometric part, we'll have to settle for a fingerprint on the edge.

The Snapdragon 480 used isn't anything spectacular, but it's enough to run Android One smoothly while still delivering two days of battery life. As for photos, only the main sensor takes good pictures, the rest are slightly above average.

Without being bad, the X20 struggles to stand out from the crowd in the face of stiff competition at this price level. Whether three years of Android One software support is worth it is up to you.

Google Pixel 4a

Although the Google Pixel 4a is not the newest smartphone, it is very relevant. Why? Yes, if only because it looks cool, it has a matte back cover and a convenient fingerprint scanner located on it, and the camera, as always, takes excellent pictures.

The screen is 5.8-inch OLED, but there is no support for 90 Hz, but the “donut” from the front camera is located in the notification line, so it won’t bother you.

The performance margin is very high: Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G chip, 6 GB of RAM and proprietary optimization. Unlike flagships, there is no wireless charging, but there is fast charging.

  • Screen diagonal: 5.8 inches
  • Screen resolution: 2160×1080
  • Weight: 162 g
  • Number of SIM cards: 1
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G
  • Memory capacity: 128 GB
  • RAM capacity: 6 GB
  • Battery capacity: 3140 mAh
  • Rear camera: 12 MP
  • Front camera: 8 MP
  • Memory card support: no

Nokia X71

The gadget has a triple main camera and a hole-punch display, the fashion for which was set by Samsung with its Galaxy S10 series. In addition, right out of the box you get pure Android 9.0 Pie, which will run on a 6.39-inch Full HD+ display. The resolution of the three rear cameras is 48, 12 and 5 megapixels, respectively, while the front camera has only 16 megapixels. But it does come with a function to improve the quality of pictures and videos based on artificial intelligence, whatever that means. Well, don’t forget about the “delicious hardware filling” and the fingerprint scanner built under the display.

Nokia 5.4 4/128GB

A very nice smartphone from Nokia based on Android. As befits the latest models of the brand, Nokia 5.4 has a dedicated key on the body for calling the Google voice assistant.

The design of the back cover, or rather the camera module, is traditionally unusual. The latter has 4 sensors: main, wide-angle, macro and depth sensor. It shoots well for the money.

We note a good 6.39-inch matrix, a good platform based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 chipset, 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of ROM. There is NFC, a scanner and fast charging.

  • Screen diagonal: 6.39 inches
  • Screen resolution: 1560×720
  • Weight: 180 g
  • Number of SIM cards: 2
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 662
  • Memory capacity: 128 GB
  • RAM capacity: 4 GB
  • Battery capacity: 4000 mAh
  • Rear camera: four modules 48/5/2/2 MP
  • Front camera: 16 MP
  • Memory card support: yes

TOP 5 models

1st place – Xiaomi Mi A2

The best device participating in the Android One program is Mi A2 from Xiaomi. The device supports 2 nano SIM cards, is equipped with a 6-inch diagonal IPS display with Full HD+ resolution and a pixel density of 403 ppi.

The phone is positioned on the market as a camera phone, and rightly so. There is a 2-module camera with resolutions of 12 and 20 megapixels and an f/1.75 lens aperture. Moreover, the additional sensor here is not used to determine depth and shoot with a blurred background, its role is more important - it “catches” additional light, as a result of which the quality of the photo increases even in low light.

I will provide examples of photographs to confirm this. Ignore the Mi 6X tag on the images, as the Mi A2 and Mi 6X are the same phone, just the latter with MIUI skin.

Clickable:

A good camera is not the only plus. The device is equipped with a mid-level Snapdragon 660 processor, 4 GB of RAM and a 64 GB disk. This chipset will even allow you to play games, but heavy games like PUBG will run on medium graphics settings. Plus, there are fast 5 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0 modules, and a 3010 mAh battery. According to GSMArena, the battery guarantees:

  • 9 hours of video playback.
  • 9.36 hours of surfing the Internet.
  • 22 hours of calls on a 3G network.

Fast charging and a powerful adapter are included - in 30 minutes Mi A2 gets 35% charged, up to 100% charged in 2 hours.

2nd place – Mi A2 Lite

As expected, the Lite version received 2nd place. Above is a link to a comparison of the Lite and regular versions, but I repeat here: the Mi A2 lite has a 0.15-inch smaller display, a lower-level processor - Snapdragon 625, a Wi-Fi module that only works in the 2.4 GHz range, Bluetooth 4.2, and most importantly - camera.

If the Mi A2 used 2 full-fledged rear modules to improve the quality of shooting in low light, then in the Lite version the additional camera determines only the depth, that is, this is the so-called Deepth Sensor - it works when the “Portrait” mode is activated and allows you to get a spectacular shot with defocused background. In general, the shooting quality on the Mi A2 Lite is worse than on the full version.

The only advantage of the device is its 4000 mAh battery, which provides:

  • 24 hours of communication on a 3G network.
  • Almost 16 hours of surfing the Internet.
  • 12:42 hours of video playback.

An excellent standalone phone for little money, and even with an advanced Android One OS.

3rd place – Xiaomi Mi A1

Another excellent device from the Chinese brand is the 2017 model, which received Android 7.1 out of the box, an update to Android 8.0 is available. A smartphone with a 5.5-inch IPS matrix and Full HD resolution. Traditionally, the phone is positioned as a camera phone and, perhaps, it is even better than the previous one in the Mi A2 Lite rating in terms of photography.

The highlight of the smartphone is not its Android One software, but its rear camera. There are 2 modules here:

  • Regular, 26 mm, with 12 MP, f/2.2.
  • Telephoto, 50 mm, 12 MP, f/2.6.

Thanks to the additional telephoto camera, the smartphone can zoom in on objects without losing quality (2x zoom). Plus, HDR mode is supported, which really expands the dynamic range.

In terms of hardware, the phone is not bad - Snapdragon 625 and 4 GB of RAM guarantee high speed when performing simple tasks; you should not count on games, unless at low graphics settings. The advantages include fast Wi-Fi 5 GHz, USB Type-C and a 3080 mAh battery, providing:

  • 20:11 hours of calls on the 3G network.
  • 13:20 hours of surfing the Internet.
  • 11 hours video playback

4th place – Nokia 5.1

Nokia is regaining its credibility in the mobile phone market and its participation in the Android One program has been successful. The new Nokia 5.1 smartphone has received positive reviews.

The phone has a 5.5-inch diagonal IPS matrix, Full HD+ resolution and Gorilla Glass protection. On the back there is a 16 MP camera with support for HDR mode, on the front there is an 8 MP sensor. The processor is weak - MediaTek Helio P18 with cores up to 2 GHz, plus Mali-T860 graphics. The RAM is only 2 GB, but due to good optimization, the smartphone works quickly and performs simple tasks without freezes or slowdowns. You shouldn't count on games - performance is not enough.

Its memory is only 16 GB, minus the amount that was used for software. But there is an independent slot for a flash drive, which is a plus - it allows you to use 2 SIM and a memory card at the same time. The set of interfaces is standard: Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth 4.2, micro USB, no popular Type-C.

The battery has a capacity of 2970 mAh, according to the manufacturer, it is designed for 19 hours of communication on a 3G network or 53 hours of music playback. Considering the low price and characteristics, the phone is good, but not the best - it is inferior to Xiaomi models in terms of processor and cameras, and is recommended for purchase only by fans of the brand.

5th place – Nokia 3.1

Frankly a budget device from Nokia for calls and simple tasks, it received Android 8.0 and a 5.2-inch HD screen with protective glass, a 13 MP camera with an f/2 aperture. Inside there is a MediaTek MT6750 processor, 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of memory, a 2990 mAh battery.

The phone is notable only for its low cost and the presence of an NFC chip, which was not present in the devices presented above. This is one of the cheapest NFC offerings on the market. Of course, the phone is weak in terms of cameras and operating speed, but no one demands power from it.

Disadvantages of Android One

VPN network - what is it in an Android phone

Although the system has many advantages, it may have its disadvantages for some users:

  • lack of a branded shell. For certain users, additional functions or applications that some manufacturers provide are important. For example, many are accustomed to OS shells such as EMUI or MIUI. Some branded apps and special features will not be available on stock Android One;
  • design. Due to the lack of a personalization shell, an Android One phone may look different for some users than certain manufacturers. But this problem can be solved by downloading various launchers or connecting a theme to your phone to simulate the appearance.

Nokia X20 8/128GB

Mid-range smartphone from Nokia. Has a number of features.

For example, all camera modules received Zeiss optics; the Dual sight function is available, allowing you to shoot video on both cameras at once - front and rear. The camera itself, by the way, takes excellent pictures during the day and doesn’t give up at night either.

A fresh 8-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 processor is responsible for the performance, the screen is a 6.67-inch matrix (IPS), and the battery capacity is 4470 mAh (fast charging is available).

  • Screen diagonal: 6.67 inches

Benefits of Android One

Android SDK - what is it and what is it for?

Buying a phone with a lightweight OS offers several advantages over other devices. The list of advantages that were created specifically for the fast operation of budget smartphones is described below.

Thanks to the many advantages of the Android OS, such smartphones are popular

No duplicate features

Android One is a special system that provides a basic set of applications necessary for work. Your Google Account password gives you access to other Google services:

  • e-mail;
  • Chrome browser;
  • Google maps with navigation;
  • cloud data storage;
  • YouTube;
  • messenger;
  • Play Store.

Play Market is a store where more than 90% of Android programs are free

Higher operating time

Thanks to a small number of pre-installed programs, the battery runs without unnecessary costs. Battery life is one of the challenges in the mobile industry. Therefore, anything that allows you to extend this time becomes a huge plus for the user. That is, the less the smartphone is equipped with uncontrolled applications, the less they drain the battery in the background.

Android One smartphones use battery power more efficiently

Regular updates

Upgrades make sense for those who are interested in modern technology and who prefer to be among the first to use it. The latest operating system updates are the first to arrive on Android Van smartphones - what does this give users? This means that owners of such devices will have access to new OS features before others. Regular updates also guarantee protection against attackers who take advantage of system flaws to capture personal data.

Note! To find out what version of updates is installed, you need to go to the settings and find the “System update” item. If there is a notification about a new version of the update, you just need to confirm the installation or take it offline.

Clear controls

Android One devices are easy to learn and use, especially when switching from a feature phone. The interface of Android One phones is presented in the form in which it was created by the developers of the program itself, and not by the manufacturers. Controlling a smartphone with an Android van will not be difficult even for a child or an elderly person who does not understand modern technologies.

Android van smartphones work as engineers intended

Nokia 2.4 3/64GB

Nokia 2.4 belongs to the budget segment, but for its price, the smartphone, frankly speaking, is extremely good.

For example, the design is classic and will suit almost everyone. The battery life is excellent due to the powerful 4500 mAh battery; there is no fast charging. The 6.5-inch screen is not bad, and the platform, although not the most powerful, provides good system speed.

The main camera has two modules, the second is a depth sensor. This is a good camera for its segment, and it also supports night mode.

There is no NFC module.

  • Screen diagonal: 6.5 inches
  • Screen resolution: 1600×720
  • Weight: 195 g
  • Number of SIM cards: 2

Motorola One

The highlight of Motorola One is a 5.9-inch display with support for proprietary Max Vision HD+ technology and two rear cameras (13 megapixels each). In addition, the kit includes a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625, 4 gigabytes of RAM and 64 gigabytes of physical memory, a 3000 mAh battery and a selfie camera with a sensor resolution of 8 megapixels, which is quite modest by today's standards.

Google Pixel 3 XL 64GB

Google Pixel 3 XL is not the most popular, but very interesting smartphone.

There are no revelations in terms of design - the Pixel 3 XL looks familiar and even boring. However, it is interesting in other ways: the very high speed of the system, the most excellent main camera (and don’t be confused by the single module - in terms of photos, the Pixel 3 XL leaves behind most competitors), a powerful platform based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chip and 4 GB of RAM. The latter, by the way, is not so much available at the moment, but in this case optimization plays a decisive role.

There is water protection, fast and wireless charging, and a fingerprint sensor on the back cover.

  • Battery capacity: 3430 mAh
  • Rear camera: 12.2 MP
  • Front camera: dual 8/8 MP
  • Memory card support: no

Google Pixel 4 6/64GB

Pay attention to the main camera module, which is very similar to that in the iPhone 11 Pro, but photos of the Pixel 4 appeared online much earlier - long before the premiere of the smartphone itself and the iPhone 11 Pro.

This is the younger compact version, which has a relatively small 5.7-inch display. The device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset, the memory capacity in this version is 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of ROM.

Note the cool dual rear camera (one of the best in the world), IP68 water protection, support for fast and wireless charging. Just remember that there is only one physical SIM card, the second is an electronic eSIM.

  • Dimensions (WxHxD): 68.8×147.1×8.2 mm
  • Screen diagonal: 5.7 inches
  • Screen resolution: 1080×2280
  • Weight: 162 g

  • Battery capacity: 2800 mAh
  • Rear camera: dual 12.2/16 MP
  • Front camera: 8 MP

Differences between Android One and Android

When buying a first device, the buyer becomes interested in whether there is a difference between the Android and Android One operating systems, what these systems are and which one is better.

What is Android App Cloning

The main difference is that Android is a mobile operating system from Google, and Android One is a software constant suitable for this OS. Also, in classic Android, manufacturers make their programs for commercial purposes, but in Android One such changes are limited.

For your information! Android is based on the Linux kernel developed by Google.

Android is installed on devices with a touch screen; it is also used for specialized designs in TVs, cars and smart watches, game consoles with joysticks, digital cameras, etc.

Android smartwatches are now a popular accessory.

An important advantage of the Android operating system over others is that it is open source, which means that anyone can get it and add their own changes.

Android One is Google's project for Android systems. Most often it is chosen by people buying their first smartphone. Devices under such guidance are launched on a bare android.

Note! Android devices do not have additional programs and modifications that manufacturers insert into their device models.

Xiaomi Mi A3 4/64GB Android One

The latest generation of Xiaomi Mi A series is the same series where stock Android was used for the first time for Xiaomi. And these smartphones were liked by users. But in the latest generation, not everything is so wonderful. Yes, the screen diagonal has grown and is 6.09 inches, but only the resolution has “dropped” to 1560x720 pixels.

The main camera is triple, it takes good pictures, but look at the price. Processor - Qualcomm Snapdragon 665, memory - 4 GB RAM and 64 GB ROM. A fairly powerful battery is installed - 4030 mAh. The fingerprint sensor is in the display.

There are no revelations regarding the design - everything is in the spirit of the latest devices from Xiaomi.

  • Screen diagonal: 6.09 inches
  • Screen resolution: 1560×720
  • Weight: 174 g
  • Number of SIM cards: 2
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 665
  • Memory capacity: 64 GB
  • RAM capacity: 4 GB
  • Battery capacity: 4030 mAh
  • Rear camera: triple 48/8/2 MP
  • Front camera: 32 MP
  • Memory card support: yes

Quartet of Xiaomi smartphones

Xiaomi was a member of Android One for less than three years - its first smartphone under this program was the Mi A1, which debuted on September 5, 2022 and marked the beginning of the Mi A line. The Mi A1 itself, like other representatives of the series, cannot be considered unique - in fact, it is a Mi 5X smartphone, simply devoid of MIUI and additional pre-installed applications.

Mi A1, the very first Xiaomi smartphone without MIUI

Mi A1 was greeted very warmly by the global community - in terms of speed and stability, many users compared this smartphone with Pixel models from Google itself. This prompted Xiaomi to release two more monoblocks in the series - Mi A2 and its cheaper version Mi A2 Lite.

As CNews reported, the premiere of the new duo took place at the end of July 2022. Both smartphones belonged to the middle price segment at that time, and both were based on similar models with MIUI firmware. Xiaomi made the Mi A2 based on the Mi 6X smartphone, while the Mi A2 Lite was based on the Redmi 6 Pro.

Xiaomi Mi A2

The third and last Xiaomi smartphone without MIUI firmware was the Mi A3, a complete copy and at the same time an international version of the CC9e model, sold with MIUI, but only in the Chinese market. The Mi A3 was released in July 2022 and presumably could have influenced Xiaomi's decision to withdraw from Android One.

Google Pixel 3 64GB

You could say it's the same Pixel 3 XL, only smaller.
