Age restrictions on access to content is a topic that Western companies, including Apple, pay great attention to. Many parents strive to shield their children from obscene language that may be present in films, games, music and other content. In devices running the iOS operating system, there is a separate setting that is responsible for enabling restrictions on the playback of music and podcasts with an Explicit rating, that is, intended for an adult audience.
By default, iPhone, iPad, and iPod may have a setting to restrict playback of music that is not suitable for children. Accordingly, even adults may encounter the problem that a number of songs, albums, or TV episodes are unavailable in Apple Music or the Podcasts app (their names are written in gray). In such a situation, you will need to disable the Explicit setting, and below we will look at how to do this.
How do I enable offensive content?
Go to the Settings menu and select the Screen Time feature. Click "Privacy and Content
" If required, enter a password. Under Allow Changes, select the features or settings you can change, and then select Allow or Don't Allow.

We remove restrictions (age limit) in Apple Music - all the ways!
I warmly welcome everyone! In the first paragraph, out of habit, there will be “water”. No, but how else? After all, this is how it is done on “these internets of yours”! First of all, the article must tell you what a great service Apple Music is (after all, a huge number of people use it) and, my favorite thing, write the following phrase...
Many users may encounter the problem that some songs will not play on their favorite iPhone or iPad due to so-called age restrictions. What's going on? How did this happen? How to remove this age limit in Apple Music?
And so on and so forth... Sometimes you read such things and don’t understand whether to cry or laugh.
Well, now that I’ve spoken out, we’ll finally start :)
I'll be brief. The “error” itself looks like this.
What does this mean? It's simple - the iPhone or iPad tells us that the content (songs, podcasts, videos) uses profanity or other unpleasant materials.
What to do? To begin with, standard actions:
- Open “Settings - Screen Time”
- Go to the “Content and Privacy” section.
- We are looking for the “Content restrictions” item.
- You may need to enter a restrictions password (what if you forgot it or just don't know it?).
- Here we are interested in two positions - “Age Limit” (select Russia) and “Music, podcasts and news” (select with obscene content).
All. After this procedure (according to Apple’s logic), all restrictions on censorship will be lifted.
But this is Apple! :)
Therefore, “sometimes” small problems may arise. What's the problem? The usual ones are like this... you did everything right, but there is no happiness - the music still does not play due to the “Age Limit” error.
What should I do? There are a couple of ideas:
- Check the age you specified for your account. If your Apple ID is set to a child age, you won't be able to access inappropriate content.
- Close the music app and restart your iPhone (a hard reboot will do just fine).
- Log out of Apple ID (Settings - iTunes Store and App Store) and log in again.
Done? Did not help? Then last chance.
- On the device, open the iTunes Store application (not Music!).
- We are looking for any song with an “E” (Explicit) icon that contains obscene content.
- We click on it and try to reproduce it.
- We agree to reproduction.
- Victory!
Didn't help again? Then we perform the same operation with the Podcasts application.
Updated! The comments suggest that (when you click on a song or podcast with the letter “E”) the request to play offensive content does not always appear. What should I do? Disable the Screen Time feature (Settings - Screen Time - Turn Off)!
That’s all for sure now - after such pressure, any age restrictions should disappear and leave your iPhone (iPad) forever. They simply have no other choice! :)
However, “should” does not mean that they are “obliged”. Therefore, let us agree on this:
- If the article helped, don’t be lazy to write a couple of lines in the comments. The author will be pleased.
- If nothing worked and you still have some questions... then write in the comments. We will frantically investigate and, quite possibly, together we will find a solution to your problem!
PS And of course, like and click on the social media buttons. This is not at all necessary, but... why not? :)
No E icon, but the song is gray
If you find that a song from your library is greyed out, but it is not rated (or you already have the Explicit Content filter turned off), then there could be several reasons for this.
The author of the song or copyright holder has changed or deleted the album
This is rare, but it does happen, and in such a situation the user cannot do anything. You can leave a song in your library in hopes that it will return to Apple Music, but in most cases, the only thing you can do is delete the album from your library.
Song not available on Apple Music in your region
If you switched from one country's Apple ID to another, there's a chance that songs available in your original region are on your original account.
For the same reason, tracks are sometimes grayed out in searches: this may indicate that the song or album is available on Apple Music, but the content is not available in your country. Again, the only solution is to switch to an account in a different region.
No connection to iCloud Music library
If a song in your library is grayed out and when you try to play it, a warning appears in the upper right corner that you are not connected to the Internet, click on this icon to reconnect. This error does not appear if the track is downloaded to the phone.

What are the restrictions on the iPhone and why are they needed?
There are many privacy restrictions on inappropriate content for downloads, music and videos, and purchases through the mobile store. For all Apple devices, they are set through application throttling. The age limit helps prevent you from listening to objectionable music and watching related movies and TV shows. Offensive content can be disabled by the administrator on the iPhone. To do this you need to do the following:
- In the settings menu, click on “ Screen Time ”.
- Click on " Content and Privacy ".
- For Content Restrictions , select a resolution for each content type.
The list of functions that a user can grant access to is quite wide:
- Music and profiles with track publications. You can even turn off the display of music your friends are listening to.
- News and entertainment podcasts. They depend not only on the content, but also on the age limit.
- Movies and television shows.
- Books with age limit and downloads through the mobile store. In-app purchases are regulated by a password.

List of parental control apps on iPhone and iPad
There are many applications that are undesirable for children to watch and that traumatize the unstable psyche of the child.
You should set the following content restrictions on your iPhone for children to access:
- age limit. This indicates the region or country where this function is required;
- music, publications. In these sections you can hear songs with profanity;
- movies. There are those that are intended for viewing by an adult audience;
- books that children should not read.
Note! Nowadays there are many programs, talk shows, television shows intended for a certain age limit. They also need to be blocked so that children do not learn anything unnecessary.
How to Allow Blocked Music to Play on OS X
It's much easier to do this on a Mac computer (in iTunes on Windows, I think it's done about the same).
- The first thing you need to do is launch iTunes.
- Then open the settings: iTunes main menu → Preferences or simply press Cmd+ (command key and comma) with the iTunes window active.
- All that remains is to uncheck the Restrict: Music with explicit content checkbox in the Parental Control sub-menu.
- Don't forget to click OK.
That's all, I hope everything worked out for you!
iOS 12 / Instructions for iPhone and iPad

Where have the “Restrictions” gone?
With each new version of iOS, Apple developers move various menus and settings in settings from their usual places. And, of course, no one warns users about this. iOS 12 was no exception , in which “Restrictions” suddenly disappeared. At least they were gone from their standard place. Finding transferred “Restrictions”, however, is not difficult.
Option 2: Android
On mobile devices with Android, deactivation of the age limit is carried out using a slightly different algorithm - in the Apple Music settings.
- Launch the application and bring up its menu by touching the three dots located in the upper right corner.
- Select "Settings".
- Scroll down the list of options presented in this section to the “Restrictions” block.
Tap on the “Content Restrictions” item.
Enter the PIN code that was previously set for this function.
- Move the switch opposite the “Music” item to the active position
or, conversely, disable it next to “Enable content restrictions.” The latter, as you might guess, removes all restrictions, not just those imposed on music.
- Now all music from o will be available for listening, as you can verify by launching one of these tracks.
How to Set Restrictions on iPhone or iPad
If parents want to protect their children from content that is prohibited up to a certain age, they have the opportunity to enable the necessary restrictions in the settings of their iPhone or iPad. In addition, in the settings you can set restrictions on a number of key actions for the operation of the device and access to prohibited content: downloading and deleting applications, making in-app purchases in games and programs, using the camera, the Safari browser and much more.
To set up the necessary restrictions, you need to go to “Settings”, then select “General” - “Restrictions”. After entering the password, you can make the necessary settings. The user has the opportunity to either completely disable access to certain device functions or set age restrictions on specific content.
Additionally, depending on the age of the device user, you can enable country-recommended restrictions by selecting the appropriate country.

How to Allow Blocked Music to Play on iOS
In order to allow yourself to play “adult content”, you must:
- Open the menu Settings → General → Restrictions.
- Then Enable Restrictions, no matter how strange this action may seem in the context of disabling restrictions. It is necessary that there is an opportunity to edit the restriction settings.
- After this, you will need to come up with and enter a four-digit password, and then enter it again.
Pay attention to this step so as not to forget the password, because you can reset it only by completely resetting the device and setting it up as new.We will need this password to edit the restrictions settings, because to enable restrictions you need to set a password, and to edit the restrictions settings you need to enable them.
- Now you need to scroll down to the Allowed Content section and select Music & Podcasts.
- Now you need to turn on the Explicit switch to allow the playback of music, video clips and podcasts containing explicit content.
- In the last step, you can return to the main restrictions menu and turn off restrictions at the very top, this will leave the setting made in the previous step active. But the main thing is to check that you can now play tracks marked as Explicit.
I hope that in the next version of iOS Apple will correct this misunderstanding and will not prohibit us from listening to our favorite music.
