Enabling the screen saver or accessing screen saver settings is not much of a task in Windows 10, especially for users who have just updated to the latest version of the Windows operating system. The classic Personalization window (where we could access screen saver settings) has been removed from Windows 10, and the new Settings app also doesn't include an option to enable screen saver customization. Screen savers continue to be a part of the Windows 10 operating system. Six screen savers are available: voluminous text, ribbons, bubbles, hoax, blank (shows a black screen) and photos as a screen saver. If you have installed new screensavers, they will also appear in this list. You just need to access the settings and enable them. In this guide, we'll walk you through how to access and enable the screen saver settings in Windows 10.
How to get into the screensaver settings in Windows 10
1 way . Go to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen > Screensaver options.
Method 2 . Let's enable or disable the screen saver through the registry. Open Registry Editor by opening Start and searching for regedit .
- In Registry Editor, navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
- On the right, find ScreenSaveActive and double-click on it. Set the value to 1 - enable screen saver, 0 - disable.
How to change the screensaver on your computer desktop
System parameters
Go to Settings > Personalization > Background . Select the desired photo from those available in the parameters or in Explorer by clicking the Browse . Additionally, it is possible to stretch the photo across the entire desktop or place it in the center, depending on the image resolution.
It's unclear why there is also an option to set a solid color instead of a background image. If in the Background you select Slideshow of Photo , then you will need to specify the location of at least several desktop screensavers.
Installing and activating a third-party screen saver in Windows 10
If you are not satisfied with the default set of screensavers, you can download interesting ones from the Internet. However, be sure to only download from places you trust. And if you don't know where to download, DeviantArt is one such place where you can download screensaver safely. I provided a link to the site immediately showing the search for all the screensavers that are there. Select any one and click on it, a new page will open, and at the top right click Download to download it.
To install a third-party screen saver:
- Copy the screen saver file you want to install to a safe place to make sure it won't be accidentally deleted.
- Right-click on the screen saver file and click the Install .
- Automatically opens the Screen Saver Options dialog box with the new one selected. Click the Apply button to apply the newly installed screen saver.
- If you've set a password for your local user account or use a Microsoft account to sign in to Windows 10, you can check the Start at login screen checkbox to
force the user to enter a password.
How to change the screensaver on the desktop of a Windows 10 computer?
Externally, the “Ten” has become brighter, more beautiful, and has its own style. There are also bright themes for high-resolution monitors. After “Ten” you don’t really want to go back to “seven”... But if in “seven” you just download the theme and install it, then in “ten” (for some time now) it is mandatory to have your own Microsoft account. Made by
analogies with Google Play, where we use Google mailbox to access applications. Microsoft calls it the Microsoft Store. And now all desktop themes can be taken from there for free.
So, to change the design in “Ten” we now need to right-click on the desktop and select “Personalization”:
And we find ourselves in extensive settings where you can change the background, fonts, Start menu, mouse cursor, etc. to suit your taste. There are now a lot of things you can customize and doing it has become much more convenient and enjoyable.
Today we are interested in desktop themes, so let’s follow the link “Other themes in the Microsoft Store.” If your Microsoft account is active, you will be taken to the Microsoft Store home page:
We choose the topic with the most stars and which you liked. Click on it. You can download several pieces at once to try. Click “Get”
The theme is downloading; then you can select it in the “Personalization” window with the “Use another theme” button. The theme you choose will appear on all devices you're signed in to with your Microsoft account.
How to Set Photos as Screen Saver in Windows 10
Luckily, you don't need to use a third-party tool to set photos as screensaver in Windows 10. You can use the built-in screensaver feature in Windows 10 to set photos as screensaver in Windows 10. You can set one photo or multiple photos as screensaver in Windows 10: When you install multiple photos, Windows 10 will show those photos as a slideshow.
- Go to settings as described above and select “Screen saver” > Photos. On Windows 10, it will automatically start showing your photos that are in the Photos app right away. You can also specify any folder with photos to display a slide show on the screen by clicking on Options and Browse .
By default, in Windows 10, the screen saver is disabled, and entering the screen saver settings has become unclear, especially for users who previously worked in Windows 7 or XP.
However, the ability to set (or change) the screensaver remains and this is done very simply, as will be shown later in the instructions. Note: some users understand the desktop wallpaper (background) as a screensaver. If you are interested in changing the desktop background, then this is done even easier: right-click on the desktop, select the “Personalization” menu item, and then in the background settings, set “Photo” and specify the image you want to use as wallpaper.
How to change the wallpaper on the Windows 10 desktop in Internet Explorer - method 2
To implement this method, you will need the Internet Explorer browser, which is still built into the Windows 10 operating system. The browser has a function for selecting graphic images for the desktop background from the Internet.
The user selects the desired wallpaper on some website on the Internet, and the browser sets this image as wallpaper on the Windows desktop.
Follow these steps:
- Go to the Start menu.
- In the list of programs, find the “Accessories - Windows” folder.
- Launch Internet Explorer browser.
- Open a web page with a suitable image that you want to use as your desktop background.
- Right-click on the image.
- Select "Set as wallpaper" from the context menu.
- In the Internet Explorer dialog box asking if the user really wants to change the desktop background, click Yes.
An image (wallpaper) from the Internet will become the background image on the Windows 10 desktop.
Changing the Windows 10 Screen Saver
There are several ways to enter the Windows 10 screensaver settings. The simplest of them is to start typing the word “Screensaver” in the search on the taskbar (in the latest versions of Windows 10 it is not there, but if you use the search in Settings, the desired result is there).
Another option is to go to the Control Panel (type “Control Panel” in the search) and enter “Screen Saver” in the search.
The third way to open the screensaver options is to press the Win+R keys on your keyboard and enter
You will see the same screen saver options window that was present in previous versions of Windows - here you can select one of the installed screen savers, set its parameters, set the time after which it will start.
Note: By default, Windows 10 is set to turn off the screen after a period of inactivity. If you want the screen not to turn off, but to show a screensaver, in the same screen saver settings window, click “Change power settings”, and in the next window select “Display turn off settings”.
How to enable a screen saver
1. In the search bar or in the Run menu (Run is called with the Win+R keys), enter the command rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL desk.cpl,,1 and press the Enter key (another way is to go to the Start menu => Settings => Personalization => Lock screen => Screensaver options).
2. Select any of the screensavers (except “None”) and click “OK”. You can preview how your chosen screensaver will look by clicking on “Preview” in this window.
How to download screensavers
Screensavers for Windows 10 are the same files with the .scr extension as for previous versions of the OS. Thus, presumably, all screensavers from previous systems (XP, 7) should also work. The screensaver files are located in the C:\Windows\System32\ folder - this is where screensavers downloaded anywhere that do not have their own installer should be copied.
I will not name specific sites for downloading, but there are plenty of them on the Internet and they are easy to find. And installing the screensaver should not present any problems: if it is an installer, run it; if it’s just a .scr file, then copy it to System32, after which the next time you open the screensaver settings window, a new screensaver should appear there.
Very important: .scr screen saver files are regular Windows programs (i.e., essentially the same as .exe files), with some additional functionality (for integration, customizing settings, exiting the screen saver). That is, these files can also have malicious functions and, in fact, on some sites you can download a virus under the guise of a screen saver. What to do: after downloading the file, before copying it to system32 or double-clicking it, be sure to check it using the virustotal.com service and see if antiviruses consider it malicious.

Hello, I want to turn on Cortana, I switch the region to USA and the main language to English, I restart the computer, and Cortana is still not there! Maybe my computer does not support Cortana, model G551JW? (I doubt it) But I watched the video and in the search people have a circle and a gear hanging at the top, but I don’t have a Cortana icon at the bottom. I can send screenshots, but they are not inserted into comments.

Hello. I rechecked it myself (plus I installed English synthesis and recognition) - it also doesn’t work. It worked on earlier builds. Apparently they are still checking somehow.

Why is Alice worse than Cortana? I installed Alice from Yandex on both my computer and smartphone. Good thing and application! He can do a lot, it’s impossible to list them all. Even if you ask her: “Alice! What can you do?”, she will always give a list of her skills, and will also give you a link where you can click on many additional skills of Alice But. I would also like to note that for Android smartphones there is an assistant not only Google and Alice. Mail.ru has also developed its own voice assistant, Marusya, for Android. Compared to Alisa, Marusya is still far from her, but Marusya can also do a lot of things
Lock screen after a certain period of inactivity
If you don't need a screen saver, but want the lock screen to turn on after a certain period of system inactivity:
2. In the “Screen saver” field, select “No” => check the box next to “Start at login screen” => in “Interval” set the inactivity time after which to show the lock screen => click “OK”.
To disable the screen saver, select “No” in the “Screen saver” field, uncheck “Start at login screen” and click “OK”.
That’s all for today, if you know other ways, write in the comments! Good luck to you
