Honor Band 4 review: who needs Fitibit if you have Honor

Today we’ll talk about the Honor Band 4 fitness tracker with a color display and familiar functions.

The Chinese brand Honor is focused on creating youth-friendly and, therefore, affordable gadgets. Special attention is paid to fitness trackers - we tested Honor Band 3 last year, now it’s the turn of its improved successor.

Appearance

Let's start as usual - with the appearance. The fitness bracelet is quite nice, but it cannot be said that it looks radically different from its competitors. The strap is made of silicone: it is pleasant to the touch and is practically not felt while wearing. It has a wide range of adjustment for the wrist, and therefore the bracelet is suitable for both adults and children.

The capsule itself is oblong and large, since the Honor Band 4 has a three-dimensional screen (0.9 inches). The display is covered with glass, not plastic, so it is durable and scratch-resistant. When worn carefully, the screen will retain its original appearance for a long time.

By the way, the bracelet is waterproof: you can dive in it to a depth of 50 meters. At the same time, the device recognizes many swimming styles and determines the speed at which a person swims. The straps, like most fitness bracelets, are removable. The device comes with a charging dock, so there is no need to remove the capsule.

The design of the bracelet is good because it balances between business and sports styles. The device will look great with sportswear, but it also harmonizes with a business suit, which allows you to carry it with you everywhere without embarrassment. You can buy Honor Band 4 in black, yellow, red, blue and pink.

Results, pros and cons

Honor Band is an excellent fitness tracker with a set of all the necessary basic functions, an excellent miniature AMOLED screen, but a slightly inflated official price.

Pros:

  • beautiful, comfortable, pleasant to the touch;
  • bright and responsive display;
  • accurate measurement of pulse and other indicators;
  • normal autonomy.

Minuses:

  • slowdowns when working with notifications;
  • high price;
  • NFC doesn't work.

Features and capabilities

To use all the features of the fitness bracelet, it must be synchronized with the Huawei Health mobile application, which is available for Android and iOS devices. In it you will find detailed statistics about calories burned, sleep quality, number of steps, kilometers and so on. The connection is made via Bluetooth.

We wrote above that Honor Band 4 compares favorably with its competitors. Now it's time to tell you what.

HUAWEI Health app

To operate the bracelet, you will need a proprietary application for working with HUAWEI and Honor wearable electronics. We recently got acquainted with it and since then the set of its capabilities and functionality has not changed. The interface is divided into three screens: general information, where all the information from the bracelet is collected, training mode and bracelet settings. In the application, you can choose which programs you will receive notifications from, customize the sequence of menu items in Band 4 and other small options.

Display

The first advantage and feature of the Honor Band 4 fitness bracelet is its color and three-dimensional OLED display. It can display up to 45 Chinese characters, while the aforementioned Mi Band 3 displays a maximum of 24. If you sync the bracelet with your smartphone, you will be able to see incoming SMS and calls on the screen.

Interestingly, Honor Band 4 shows the name of the caller, and not just a handset icon. When you call, the bracelet vibrates strongly so that you don't miss an important conversation. The strength of this vibration cannot be changed at this time.

Since the screen is large, any information can be easily read on it. By looking at it, you can find out the time, date, weather, battery level and much more. Even if you go outside on a sunny day, you will be able to see the text on the display - Huawei did a great job here. Thanks to this, you will be able to take your smartphone out of your pocket less often and save its battery power.

Heart rate monitor

Honor Band 4 can measure heart rate - this is not surprising. Many fitness bracelets today can do the same, but the new product from Huawei is radically different from its competitors.

Other fitness bands measure your heart rate in bursts several times throughout the day. They then average it out and report it back to you. In contrast, Honor Band 4 records a person’s heart rate throughout the day, so the data is more accurate. By the way, when the heart rate increases sharply, the user immediately receives a notification.

Screen

Unlike previous models, Honor Band 4 is equipped with a bright color display that immediately attracts attention.

The screen resolution is 240 x 120 pixels, diagonal - 0.95 inches, technology - AMOLED. For such a miniature size, this will be enough for the picture to be clear and rich.

Chinese engineers have solved the persistent problem with screen brightness - here it can be adjusted on a scale from 1 to 3. This is very good, because by default such bracelets are almost blinding at night, and in sunny weather nothing is visible on the screen. It’s also convenient that in the settings you can activate the function of dimming the brightness at night (from 21:00).

As for the main screen, at the time of testing and writing the review, Honor Band 4 had 5 types of designs available for every taste and color. Let's hope that future software updates will introduce other design options, as was the case with its predecessor.

NFC

The bracelet costs about $30. Despite this, Chinese developers managed to cram an NFC module into their device. That is, in theory, you will be able to pay using this device in stores and supermarkets. But this is only in theory.

The fact is that the NFC module works with the Alipay system, which is not found everywhere. In any case, it is quite possible that the module will be useful in the near future, but for now there are no special advantages to talk about in its presence.

Which model should you prefer?

In terms of indicators such as the quality of the display module, compatibility with smartphones and the level of water resistance between the devices, there is complete parity. Their differences are hidden in the battery life, since the Xiaomi device is capable of operating in standby mode for almost a week longer than its rival. The newer version of Bluetooth 5.0, which has a longer range and stable connection, also speaks in its favor. The advantage of this model is its high response speed, since the Huawei device is characterized by a certain delay in displaying notifications.

Battery

The battery in the Honor Band 4 smart bracelet is standard - 100 mAh. Since the device has a color display, it discharges faster than in the same Mi Band 3. If you turn off the continuous heart rate monitoring function, the battery may last for a maximum of two weeks. If you leave it turned on, you can use the bracelet for no more than 6 days.

In all other respects, Honor Band 4 is a completely ordinary bracelet. He, like everyone else, can count calories, show the distance traveled in steps and kilometers, monitor the quality of sleep, wake up his wearer, and so on.

Sensors

Xiaomi heart rate sensors are recognized as the best and most accurate. Heart rhythm abnormalities are monitored, which can prevent the development of cardiovascular diseases. The bracelet will warn you about abnormal rhythm values and recommend choosing a more gentle training mode.

In both cases, the smart sleep sensor is paired with an alarm clock - the bracelet will select the best time to wake up in accordance with your sleep phase. You will wake up as refreshed and in a good mood as possible.

A special sleep monitoring application will help improve the quality of your rest if you follow the recommendations.

A few words about Honor Band 4 Running Edition

For running enthusiasts, Huawei has released a Running Edition.

Let's take a quick look at how it differs from the above bracelet:

  • the runner version has a half-inch monochrome display;
  • The kit includes a special mount that allows you to place the bracelet on the laces of your sneakers;
  • the Running Edition does not have a heart rate monitor;
  • the Running Edition bracelet provides more accurate statistical data about the wearer’s running;
  • this device is very light: it weighs only 17 grams;
  • The device is charged a little differently: the capsule is removed and placed in a special adapter with a USB plug;
  • due to the monochrome display, the bracelet holds the charge longer (up to 20 days);
  • the version for runners costs 2 times less.

Conclusion

A fitness bracelet is a useful device for any person who monitors their health. If you are thinking about buying one, you should definitely pay attention to the Honor Band 4. At the moment, this is objectively one of the best devices available on the market. Considering its ridiculous price, you can buy it today.

We hope that you read our review with interest and found a lot of useful information for yourself!
