One of the first new products from the manufacturer this year became the hero of our article today. Just the other day there was a presentation of a new generation of watches with smart functions Amazfit GTR2, which represent a logical continuation of the GTR line, with updated hardware and software. Looking ahead, I’ll say that I’m really pleased with the watch: new functionality, fresh design, the software has been significantly redesigned, and the firmware has been correctly translated into Russian. The watch is equipped with an advanced BioTracker 2 PPG sensor for monitoring heart rate, blood oxygen levels, sleep duration and quality, stress levels and so on. Amazfit GTR2 is a stylish watch with a classic round dial, suitable for a suit. I would like to note that at the same time the elegant rectangular Amazfit GTS2 watch with similar functionality also went on sale.

I have been using the classic version of the Amazfit GTR watch for quite a long time, about which there was an article (more than once), and there was also a review of the limited titanium version of the GTR Titanium. The main thing of the new model is in the materials of the case and in the display. The bezel on the watch is made formally and practically does not stand out against the general background of the display. You can compare it with other Amazfit models in a separate selection.

The packaging is made in the style of the entire line of Amazfit watches - a mother-of-pearl inscription of the model on a white background, a logo in the corner, an image of the watch. And nothing extra. The watch is ready to work, it just requires activation - selecting the system language (you can change it from the application) and connecting it to your smartphone.
The package includes a quick start guide and a magnetic USB charger.
The appearance of the Amazfit GTR2 watch is shown in the photo below. The watch is equipped with a very good AMOLED display measuring 1.39″, and the AoD function has appeared (always displaying the time on the screen). But the bezel with notches is an imitation and is not functional. Just a tribute to fashion.
The watch has a case made of impact-resistant plastic and an advanced optical sensor BioTracker 2 PPG (second generation). The sensor is now equipped with a dual sensor, which allows you to more accurately measure parameters, monitor sleep, SpO2 and stress levels.
The neat, low-profile case with two small physical buttons allows the watch to be worn as a dress watch.
Operating the watch is comfortable - one button calls up the context menu, confirms the choice, returns “home”, the second calls up the training menu. The screen is fully touchscreen and allows you to select the necessary menu cards by swiping.
There is a slot on the case for a speakerphone.

The included strap is soft, silicone, very comfortable.
Since the watch uses a standard strap size (22 mm), it is possible to purchase and install any watch strap or metal bracelet.
The kit includes a magnetic charger, carefully packed in several layers of cardboard.
The charging mount is held in place using magnets; it is difficult to reverse the polarity - the magnets repel each other, and the mount is installed only in the correct position. The holding force is quite decent and does not come loose during charging.
During charging, a corresponding indication is displayed in the form of a light ring. The watch was 70% charged out of the box. I recommend charging them before connecting to your smartphone and updating the firmware.
To work with the clock you will need to install the Zepp application. To connect, select “Watch with QR code” and scan the code on the watch.
Basic settings, screen settings (including a store of available watch faces), and application settings for receiving notifications on the watch are available. As for the language, Russian is present in the watch by default. Below are examples of advanced activity statistics.
The watch screen is bright, the colors are rich, and the blacks are rich. The electronic dial can easily be mistaken for the dial of a mechanical watch.
I give examples of a display with various activated menus and on-screen cards. I note that notifications arrive correctly, music control works with the display of the background of the composition (this is also true for Youtube).
The watch sits very comfortably on the hand, the buttons do not get in the way, and the size is optimal. As for the rounded screen, it’s better to look towards protective films; I can’t yet say how this display option will resist scratches. In older GTRs, the screen was recessed relative to the level of the bezel, which provided some protection.
On the watch you can select the type of watch face with a long tap on the home screen. A number of watch faces are already built into the watch’s memory, and some can be downloaded from the app store. I note that there are on-screen cards with activity statistics, weather, music playback control, notifications and heart rate/SpO2 measurement.
I turn to the traditional comparison with other smartwatches, including the popular Amazfit models.
To begin with, an advanced model from the Amazfit line - the Amazfit Stratos 3 sports watch.
Unlike the GTR/GTR2, the Stratos3 model has a four-pin magnetic USB connector for connecting as a drive to a computer.
Next, a comparison with the previous model - with the first generation Amazfit GTR watch.
Old GTRs have a metal case (in various versions - from steel to titanium), as well as a protruding bezel.
The thickness of the case and the location of the physical buttons are approximately the same for both models.
Both of them use BioTracker PPG sensor technology, but the GTR2 has a new generation sensor (more precisely, a bi-spectral one). By the way, the type and fastening of the strap are the same. At this stage I changed the strap on the GTR2 to a leather one, and left it like that until the end of the review.
Comparison with another popular watch, in retro style. This is Amazfit NEO, an excellent, fresh and inexpensive watch with fitness functions.
Again we see that the new model’s heart rate sensor is better. And yes, Amazfit NEO has a very specific strap mount.
Another popular amazfit watch is the Amazfit T-Rex rugged watch. The T-Rex has a bright AMOLED display, but is somewhat smaller in size and is also recessed into the body. More details on the T-Rex and comparison with the Casio G-Shock in a separate article.
The GTR2 has a new BioTracker 2 PPG sensor. Otherwise, the meaning is the same, the body is made of impact-resistant plastic.
Comparison with another new product - the Amazfit BIP U smartwatch.
Compared to the old BIPs, the new BIP U look noticeably better. As for the Amazfit GTR2, AoD, an excellent AMOLED, and a GPS module were brought into the new product. So for those who need both AMOLED and GPS, the choice is obvious.
I really liked the Milanese loop bracelets or woven metal bracelets. I’ll write in more detail a little later, while I’m checking how they “wear” together with the GTR2.
I liked the leather strap from the old GTR better (it fits well with a suit and is comfortable).
As for working in conjunction with the application, I tested it on the budget smartphone Poco M3. I connected to my account the first time, no connection breaks were noticed, everything is stable.
Everything works on Poco X3 NFC too.
The Amazfit GTR2 watch turned out to be very, very interesting - an excellent display, an updated heart rate sensor, with the ability to monitor sleep, stress and measure SpO2. The watch can constantly display one of the watch faces as AoD. There is also a really capacious battery that provides decent operating time. I will also note the presence of built-in memory for music files and the ability to play them on speakerphones. Should I buy a new watch or not? You decide. For me, the classic Amazfit GTR 47 mm with a stainless steel case turned out to be more practical - the case is indestructible, the heaviness is pleasantly felt. Matter of habit. The watch will be in demand as a gift for colleagues, friends and loved ones.

Packaging and equipment
The watch comes in a massive box, quite heavy. The box is sealed with film and it is impossible to access the watch without opening it. They forgot about the eco-component, like in Amazfit Bip U. Inside the main packaging there is a tight box with the Amazfit logo in which the watch is located.
Amazfit GTR 2 package contents
The watch comes in a white box hidden inside a white cover. In addition to the name of the manufacturer, in the upper left corner there is an image of the watch itself; the name of the model is applied in iridescent paint. It is repeated with a large stroke at the bottom.
It’s nice that Amazfit pays attention to such a seemingly small element as the design of the box. It immediately puts you in a positive mood and anticipation of getting to know a cool and high-quality gadget.
The watch itself with the strap attached lies inside the box. There is a film pasted on the screen that depicts a dial. It may even appear that the clock is on and showing the time.
The delivery package itself is traditional for devices of this class. But still, it is worth noting the interesting design of two cardboard blocks fastened together, which house the charger and multilingual instructions (Russian is present).
Appearance
The watch has a round shape. There are 3 case options: black, gray and steel.
Compared to the first version, the watch has become a little thinner, and the design of the elements has become more rounded. The upper part of the watch has also been redesigned; in the GTR 2e, the screen is no longer protected by a bezel, the entire upper part is glass with a 2.5D curve. It is not possible to use protective glass or film on the watch.
The bezel, in my opinion, is too big; it could be made not so big. When using a dial with a black background, the bezel hardly stands out.
The watch has AOD (always on) support. There are 3 options available: use the time from the dial, digital and pointer AOD.
The watch has touch controls + two mechanical buttons. The top button is responsible for going to the main menu and going back, the bottom button is customizable, you can set any of the watch functions on it, such as activity, viewing notifications, heart rate measurements and other watch functions.
On the back of the watch there is a heart rate sensor, a capillary blood oxygen saturation level sensor, two charging contacts and a microphone for controlling the watch using voice commands.
The charger is magnetic and the mount is secure. The charger is exactly the same as that of Amzfit Bip U. The magnetic mount holds tightly. The watch strap is silicone and has a width of 22 mm. The belt is soft and elastic. The belt buckle is made of metal and painted in the color of the case. The belt is quick-release and there will be no problems replacing it.
Large and bright screen
The watch has a large display of excellent quality. Now Amazfit GTR 2 is available in the same format with a 47mm screen. Let me remind you that the previous generation watches had two versions: 42 and 47 mm. But there are two body options to choose from: steel Classic and aluminum Sport.
I ended up with the Sport version. The body is light and thin, and at the same time protected from moisture, so with the Amazfit GTR 2 on your hand you can dive to a depth of 50 meters, not to mention a banal shower in the evening.
A rich AMOLED display with an excellent brightness margin, the data on the screen is clearly visible from any angle, the font is neat and clear. There are no questions about touch control either, the watch recognizes touches without errors, and we can praise them for their good oleophobic coating.
I would like to draw your attention to a neat detail: the marks are engraved directly on the glass covering the screen.
If desired, you can use the Always-On mode, in which case the time and date, as well as the number of steps, will be constantly displayed on the screen. But under increased load, the clock discharges faster, so to save battery, I turned it off. By the way, the watch has “smart” automation: even if Always-On is active, the backlight will not be active during sleep. Convenient if you want to sleep without taking the watch off your wrist.
Functional
The operating system in the watch is Amazfit's own and does not provide for the installation of additional programs. The watch is not equipped with NFC and you will not be able to pay for your purchase using the watch. Main features:

Battery and operating time
Okay, now I think it’s worth talking about the main differences between the generations of GTR 2e and GTS 2e, and GTR 2 and GTS 2. This, of course, is battery life. It has become almost twice as large, although the battery capacity remains the same when compared with its predecessors. For example, the GTR 2e and GTR 2 models have a battery capacity of 471 mAh, while the GTS 2e and GTS 2 have a battery capacity of 246 mAh.
For example, the previously second generation GTS 2 had a battery life of about 7 days with typical use and about 20 days with basic functions. Now the updated GTS 2e model has a runtime of 14 days with typical use.
The same applies to the GTR line of watches. Previously the battery life was up to 14 days with typical use, now the GTR 2e has up to 24 days of battery life.
Naturally, if you often use the GPS function on your watch, the operating time will not be that long. It’s also worth mentioning about charging time; on both watches, charging will take you about 2.5 hours of your time.
Notifications
The notification settings you want to receive are standard for all Amazfit watches. You select the applications from which you want to receive notifications on your watch. Additionally, you can choose to receive notifications only when your phone's screen is turned off.
The watch screen is very large and this makes reading notifications from the watch comfortable.
In long messages from instant messengers, there is scrolling, but in notifications coming from mail, only the header is available. Notifications display emoticons, but not all of them yet. Also, not all applications display icons. Notification cards are highlighted depending on the color of the icon - telegram and mail are blue, Instagram is red. To delete all notifications, there is a button with a trash can icon; it is located at the very end of the list of notifications. There is no way to respond to messages on the watch.
Amazfit GTR 2 Software
This watch model, like many other Amazfit products, is controlled from a smartphone using the proprietary Zepp application. There is a version for Android (link) and for iOS (link). Previously, this program was called more naturally – Amazfit Watch. The iOS version of the application has full functionality, all functions work correctly.
Hours are added in the “Profile” tab.
To do this, you need to scan the QR code that appears on them when you turn them on for the first time.
This will allow devices to be paired automatically using Bluetooth.
On the Profile tab on the watch page you can find the following items:
Shop . This section is about selecting watch faces and controlling them. There is a rating of the most successful options and their user assessment. There are many options to choose from – it won’t be difficult to choose the best one for yourself.
Notifications and reminders . This menu configures the list of applications that can send notifications to the watch, the type of notifications and the form in which they appear (for example, only when the screen is off).
Vibration . Vibration parameters.
Health monitoring . Quite an extensive section that actually defines the behavior of sensors responsible for monitoring health and activity. This is where you configure when, how and what to check.
Clock settings . Settings for basic watch parameters: brightness, sound, lock, system language.
Program list management.
Smart assistant.
Application settings . Here you can configure a few watch applications: Weather, Music, Schedule, Phone. The last option makes it possible to receive calls directly on the watch.
On the Home page tab, you can find detailed health and activity information sent by the watch to your smartphone.
The data is well detailed and presented in time graphs. You can find out information about your sleep, heart rate, stress level, and workouts.

In general, the Amazfit GTR 2 operating system, although built on Android, remains closed - third-party applications cannot be installed.
Health monitoring
The watch is equipped with a standard set of sensors for monitoring health status + temperature sensor.

To measure the degree of blood oxygen saturation, you need to tighten the watch strap tightly, put your hand on the table and try not to move it. It is not always possible to measure SpO2 the first time. Body temperature is measured constantly, a beautiful graph is displayed, but there is not much sense in the measurement since the values almost always remain at the level of 32-34 degrees, there is no calibration of the temperature sensor in the watch. Temperature data is only available in the watch; synchronization with the application has not yet been implemented. In the sleep statistics there are statistics in the testing mode, the quality of breathing has been added.

It's time to tell you more about each feature of the Amazfit GTR 2.
PAI
PAI is an acronym for Personal Activity Intelligence. This is a science-based health assessment system developed by Amazfit that measures the impact of physical activity on the heart. The algorithm is based on research by Professor Ulrik Wisloff from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
Pulse
In this interface, the smart watch shows not only the current heart rate value, but also statistics for the last day, starting from 00:00. When measurement is activated, the LED on the back cover lights up green.
SpO2
Amazfit GTR 2 is capable of measuring the degree of oxygen saturation in the blood. Optimal values are from 95 to 100%. In all my time, I only had one time when the result was lower than these indicators.

When taking a measurement, which lasts about a minute, it is important to relax, place your hand with the watch on the table and not move. Unfortunately, statistics are only available in the Zepp app. In addition, the measurements are not taken automatically, although this is logical, since it requires a full minute of stillness. During oxygenation measurement, the LED on the back cover glows red.
Workout
One of the most important points for people who are interested in sports. There is a huge selection of activities to choose from, in which the watch keeps exercise statistics.
Popular activities are located on the main screen of the application, and the list can be edited if desired. The remaining types of workouts are hidden in the “More” item and are divided into the following categories:

This item hides statistics about the latest workouts; you can see details about each exercise performed.
Pressure
No, unfortunately, Amazfit GTR 2 cannot measure blood pressure. This item displays data on the user's stress level. For it to be measured by the clock, you need to enable 24/7 stress monitoring in the Zepp app.
Purpose of activity
Here, in the form of a ring chart, the current status of achieving your goals is displayed: the number of steps taken, the number of paces while walking or running, the time of fat burning. Below are calories burned and distance traveled. Goals can be set in your account settings in Zepp.
Music
Amazfit GTR 2 is able to control both music on a smartphone and play it autonomously from its own memory. About 3 GB is available for this. The amount of free memory can be viewed in the smartwatch settings in the “System” section.
You can download music to your watch through Zepp in the “Application Management” item.
To sort tracks, the manufacturer provides playlists “Favorites” and “Music for running”. Amazfit GTR 2 can be connected to wireless headphones via Bluetooth, but music playback is also available through the smartwatch's speaker.
Weather
Here you can view the weather forecast for the week. To download the latest data, you must first synchronize with the Zepp application on your smartphone.
Alarm clocks
Everything is simple here - setting or disabling alarms. Unlike other products from the company that I have reviewed, in Amazfit GTR 2 you can not only turn alarms on or off, but also set the alarm time directly on the device. In total, you can set up to 10 alarms.
Events
An item displaying reminders. They can be added via Zepp by setting the date, time and frequency of operation. In this case, the user will have to somehow shorten the event names, because only 16 characters are available for this, and the “description” line is missing. Unlike alarm clocks, there can be up to 50 reminders.
Through the smart watch, only editing the time and date of the event is subsequently available, which is not entirely logical: you cannot add a new reminder or set the frequency through a wearable device.
Widgets
The following applications and features are hidden in this main menu item:

- Phone search
There is one more feature of the Amazfit GTR 2 that is worth mentioning, but it does not have its own menu item. We are talking about a call from a watch. You can enable this setting through Zepp in the “Application Management” item. It allows you to receive calls and talk directly from your smartwatch. This is quite convenient when for some reason you cannot reach your smartphone.
Interface
The system interface works smoothly, the animation effects have been improved, and the overall impression of the interface is positive.
An interesting implementation of a tab with widgets, displaying data and quick access to settings.
Screen activation time when raising your hand is ~ 1 second. When you read a notification, it does not disappear from the watch, which is a plus, but to remove it you need to “press” the notification and then click on the trash can icon. I think a simple swipe to delete a notification is the best solution.
Unlike Amazfit Bip U, the watch supports multitasking. You can start a timer, stopwatch, or even a workout and at this time go to the main screen of the watch, while applications will run in the background. Personally, I really missed this feature since I often start the timer on my watch.
Body performance tracking
In addition to the usual smartwatch features, the Amazfit GTS 2e comes with a set of workout tracking options. There are 92 types of sports exercises, as well as automatic tracking of several others. Heart rate, stress, sleep, temperature and SpO2 are monitored around the clock.
Amazfit has a cool feature called PAI - Personal Activity Index. You earn points after completing different exercises, the goal is to constantly have over 100 points. Data for the last seven days is taken into account.
The system most similar to this is Google Fit, but PAI is harder to type. Also, the more accustomed you become to training, the harder it is to score. The ultimate goal of 100 points, it turns out, is not as easy as it seems at first glance. But it motivates you to work harder.
There is also a thermometer, although it is practically useless since it is located on the wrist and is too susceptible to the influence of the surrounding temperature. Accuracy is not enough; sometimes the gadget can show body temperature of 25-30°C. Although this sensor is the only difference from the regular GTS 2, it is of little use.
Sports opportunities
The watch can track an impressive number of sports activities. Of the main ones:

Finds GPS satellites in open areas in about 15-20 seconds.
But the track clock is not always drawn correctly and in many places the problem of the first version is noticeable, namely the “drunk track”. Let's hope that updates will solve this problem. The following options are available from additional activity settings:
- Autopause
- Setting a training goal: distance, time, calories
- Setting notifications during training: distance, maximum heart rate limit, setting heart rate zone
- Selecting which graphs are displayed on the screen during a workout
- Music control during training is implemented on a separate screen
As with all Amazfit watches, the GTR 2e supports syncing with Strava, Relive and Google Fit
Amazfit GTR 2 water resistance
These watches have received the standard water resistance class for their brothers. You can swim and dive in them to a depth of up to 50 meters, and not in the sea or ocean. The watch will cope perfectly with splashes, raindrops or snowflakes. You can both swim in the pool and take a shower in them, but it is better to refrain from active water sports.
Voice control
One of the new features in the watch is voice control of the watch.
At the moment, only English controls are supported, and to activate this feature, you need to switch the watch language to English. To switch the language, go to the Zepp application - select Amazfit GTR 2e - Watch settings - System language. After switching the language, the voice command settings are located in the Settings - User preferences - Offline voice control section. The set of commands is small and you cannot add your own. With your voice you can:
- Control music playback
- Launch individual watch functions
- Block hours
- Turn on the flashlight

In a noisy place, commands have to be pronounced louder and the clock brought closer. I think for many this function will be useful, but for myself personally I see it as useless.
Device performance
It’s still difficult for me to say anything definite about the performance of the Amazfit GTS 2e. The wearable gadget is aimed at sports, the operating system is simple, and the hardware characteristics are unknown to me.
In terms of speed, the GTS 2e is reminiscent of the Honor Watch ES, although the Amazfit watch works a little better. Navigation here is easier than on Huawei's LiteOS, and they're a bit more responsive overall. I didn't notice any obvious problems in this aspect.
Autonomy
On average, the watch will have to be charged every 9-12 days.
The autonomy of the watch is influenced by many factors and it must be taken into account that measuring SpO2 and AOD (always active screen) consumes a lot of battery power. With active use, constant measurement of heart rate, sleep, a large number of notifications and one 2-hour walk using GPS, the watch worked for 6 days and the remaining charge was 38%. I think this result is worthy
Amazfit GTR 2 autonomy (how long does the battery last)
Modern devices have many different uses, which determines their operating time. In the case of a watch, it is important how long or constantly the screen is on, how often the pulse is checked, sleep status, whether workouts or movements are tracked using GPS.
In automatic brightness adjustment mode, with the screen turned on periodically, but with monitoring of sleep, heart rate and everything else, Amazfit GTR 2 will last 12-14 days, which is quite consistent with the manufacturer’s promises.
If the screen is turned on constantly, like monitoring, then autonomy will drop to 7 days. But for a watch with a bright AMOLED screen, this is a decent indicator. Every hour of GPS tracking takes 8-10% of the battery charge; this mode is the heaviest for the watch. Charging lasts about an hour and a half, although the manufacturer says it will take a little longer.
Conclusion
Elegant design, bright and juicy screen, good battery life, measurement of SpO2 and body temperature - this is what we get in the updated Amazfit GTR 2e.
In its policy of releasing new products, Amazfit has stopped experimenting and simply turns on marketing, gradually adding interesting features and slightly changing the design. Among the features of the watch (for some these will be disadvantages): the screen is no longer protected by the bezel and the film or glass will not last long, strange logic with the removal of individual notifications, temperature that is displayed only in the watch and is not synchronized in the application, voice commands only on English and only when switching the clock to English. The training track is sometimes written incorrectly, but this item can be corrected with updates. Well, as always, the biggest drawback is the lack of NFC.
Design and convenience
For smartwatches, design is very important - it is not only a gadget, but also a clothing accessory, so the Amazfit GTS 2e has everything in order with its appearance. The glass screen, slightly curved on the sides, looks elegant and is pleasant to use.
The matte metal frame has a dark gray color and looks great. On the right side there is a button, which is placed almost flush with the entire surface. Interestingly, the GTS 2e can be flipped so that the physical key is on the left - the interface will also rotate 180 degrees.
The lower part of the case is made of plastic and serves as a place for all sensors. There is also a small hole for a microphone on the case, although there is no speaker. You won't be able to answer calls, although you can reject them right from your wrist. A microphone is required to use the voice assistant to start workouts, open applications and change system settings with just voice commands.
The strap here is soft and pleasant to wear. In addition to dark colors, there is a choice of green with a slightly lighter body and purple with a gold-colored body. The straps are easy to change, so you can purchase any option with a width of 20 mm.
Bottom line
Even though there are some shortcomings, it's hard not to recommend the Amazfit GTS 2e. The watch looks cool, it’s not embarrassing to wear with any clothes, the battery life is great, and the price is quite reasonable. I just wish I could respond to notifications.
It's also worth noting problems with the Zepp app. You will have to get used to it, because the interface is quite confusing. The approach to the settings is also puzzling - some are available only on the watch, others only in the application, when for some reason the weather is not synchronized automatically.
But the main problem with GTS 2e is that some information about body parameters is not recorded properly, especially regarding stress. When synced with Google Fit, not all workouts are transferred, which is also disappointing. These are key features of a smartwatch, and they may be a barrier to purchasing a model from Amazfit.
Is it worth buying?
Amazfit's GTS 2e is a compact smartwatch that offers a ton of features for a reasonable price. With a bright OLED display, good battery life, and plenty of impressive workout tracking tools, this is one of the best fitness tracker watches in its price range.
