3 Ways to Open a PowerPoint Presentation Online

Question: How can I open a PowerPoint presentation without PowerPoint? For example, if you do not have Microsoft Office or a file created in a newer version of the program cannot be opened.

Solution: You don't have to download PowerPoint or other software to open a presentation. In this article, we'll look at three services that can help you watch and share your presentation online.

1. Google Slides

Google Slides has a familiar, simple interface, which makes working with the service convenient. PowerPoint files uploaded to this service can be viewed and edited online. You can even create a presentation from scratch using basic themes, animations, and templates. However, you won’t be able to view slides with animations, triggers, audio and video: Google’s service only shows static presentations.

Google Slides users can store content online and share it via a link or embed code. The last option does not provide copy protection: if you inserted a presentation onto the site, everyone can do the same. There are no statistics here either, meaning you can share presentations and other files, but there is no way to find out how users interact with them.

Here is an example of a PowerPoint presentation uploaded to Google.

Method 1: PowerPoint Online

Since presentations in PPTX format are created mainly using the PowerPoint application integrated into the Microsoft Office package, the logical and most convenient solution to our task would be to use its web version.
Go to Office 356 online service

  1. Open the Office 365 website and log into your Microsoft account using your username and password.

    Note: If you don't already have an account, you will need to create one.

  2. After authorization, the service's home page will open, providing quick access to the latest documents saved in OneDrive (if any) and web applications from the Office suite, the shortcuts of which are located in the left panel. Obviously, among them, we are interested in PowerPoint.

  3. Click on the “Add or open” link (there may be a download icon there instead), thus initiating the launch of the Explorer window on top of the browser.

  4. Go to the folder with the PPTX file, select it and use the "Open" button.

  5. Once "Add to OneDrive" is done,

    presentations will open in the web version of a full-fledged PC program that is well known to many users, where most of the window is reserved for viewing and editing, the panel on the left is for the list of slides, and at the top is for tools. The latter are represented by the following tabs:

    Note: For ease of use, it is recommended to “Switch Ribbon” by clicking on the arrow button indicated in the image above and thus expanding the toolbar.

    • "Home";

    • "Insert";

  6. "Drawing";
  7. "Decor";
  8. "Transitions";
  9. "Animations";
  10. "Slide show";
  11. "Review";
  12. "Figure";
  13. "Drawing";
  14. "View";
  15. "Reference";
  16. "Edit" and "View".
  17. Note! Some tabs are initially hidden and appear only after selecting certain objects in the document - images, inscriptions, tables, graphs, etc.

  18. If you needed to open the PPTX file not only for viewing, but also for editing, make the necessary changes to it using the tools indicated in the previous step.

  19. Call the “File” menu and use the “Save As” item in it. Next, select one of the available options for exporting the document to your computer:
  20. "Download ODP";
  21. “Download as image” (one JPEG per slide).
  22. If the browser asks you to specify a location on your PC disk to save the presentation, do so and confirm your decision in the Explorer window.

iSpring Cloud

iSpring Cloud is the only service that preserves all PowerPoint effects when publishing presentations. Complex animations, transitions, triggers, audio and video can be viewed on any device. Presentations uploaded to iSpring Cloud look exactly like PowerPoint.

In this service, users can send files by email, share a link (the service will automatically make it short) and post slides on social networks. It is also convenient to insert presentations onto a website or blog page using an embed code. If you specify allowed domains, slides cannot be hosted on a third-party resource that is not in the list.

In iSpring Cloud, you can not only share files, but also view statistics on them. The service allows you to find out how users interact with the presentation: who opened it, how many slides were viewed, average viewing time and other parameters. Presentations uploaded to iSpring Cloud are read-only. This is convenient for copyright protection.

Method 2: Google Slides

Today, the most popular alternative to the Microsoft office suite is Google's suite of web applications, which includes Slides.

Go to the Google Slides online service

  1. Follow the link provided and log in to your Google account.

    To do this, you will need to specify your username and password, clicking “Next” both times to confirm.

  2. After successful login, use the folder icon button indicated in the screenshot below to open the file adding tool.

  3. In the pop-up window, go to the “Downloads” tab and click on the “Select file on device” button.

  4. Specify the location of the PPTX document in Explorer, select it and “Open”.
  5. Wait a few seconds while the presentation is added to the service, after which it will become available for review and editing.

  6. Visually, the Google Slides web application, although different from PowerPoint,

    still does not cause difficulties in mastering and using.

    As in the Microsoft solution, the slides here are on the left, and the tools for working with them are at the top and in the following tabs:

    • "File";

    • "Edit";

  7. "View";
  8. "Insert";
  9. "Format";
  10. "Slide";
  11. "An object";
  12. "Tools";
  13. "Extras"

    (installed from a separate store);

  14. "Reference".
  15. Perform the necessary actions with the document, and then save it to your computer. To do this, expand the menu of the “File” tab, select “Download”, specify the preferred format and, if necessary, confirm this action.
