iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus - comparison of characteristics

I seriously doubted whether it was worth doing this...

Should I get a completely new gadget or get the same thing, only with the letter “s”?

For the difference in price between the iPhone 6 Plus and 6s Plus, you can get something among the flagships based on the Android OS. Should I stay with my iPhone 6 Plus? After all, in this case, I will receive a new high-tech device, new experiences and impressions, the best display to date (also curved) and other goodies, including the exuberant joy of the gadget addict living inside.

What will I get if I spend the same amount on an iPhone 6s Plus? Almost the same device. For example, Artur Malosiyev was not particularly impressed by the new product. And, to be honest, I was satisfied with everything about my personal iPhone 6 Plus, including its performance in iOS 9. There are no critical complaints. However, I decided to rely on my experience. Indeed, in the past, this situation arose every year; I made a choice in favor of a new iPhone and have never regretted it.

Looking ahead, I note that history repeated itself again. That is, the only thing better than an iPhone is a new iPhone. But let's look at this point in detail and in order.

Size and weight

Length, cm13.8315.82
Width, cm6.717.79
Thickness, cm0.710.73
Weight, gram143192

If you use your phone more often to browse social networks than to make calls, then it is better to choose a smartphone with a larger screen diagonal. Based on the table, the advantages of the iPhone 6s are the phone’s smaller thickness and weight.

Software

From a software point of view, we have devices running iOS 9. Compared to the previous version of the OS, it became even more similar to Android and began to slow down even more. Moreover, if on 6s it’s just noticeable, then the plus shakes a lot.

Among the differences between the implementation of software on devices, we can note the advantages of the operating system of a large device, which slightly makes up for its guilt.

Landscape mode opens up many additional goodies and turns your smartphone into a mini iPad Mini. In general, the thing is very usable. Many people will probably like it.

Display

What can you say based on the data in the table? Display resolution is an important parameter for any smartphone; the iPhone 6s Plus has much higher resolution.

First impressions from the transition from iPhone 6 Plus to 6s Plus

I seriously doubted whether it was worth doing this...

Should I get a completely new gadget or get the same thing, only with the letter “s”?

For the price difference between the iPhone 6 Plus and 6s Plus, you can get something among the flagships based on Android OS.

I even had thoughts about selling the “kicking” Nexus 6 and replacing it with the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+, while staying with my iPhone 6 Plus? After all, in this case, I will receive a new high-tech device, new experiences and impressions, the best display to date (also curved) and other goodies, including the exuberant joy of the gadget addict living inside.

What will I get if I spend the same amount on an iPhone 6s Plus? Almost the same device. For example, Artur Malosiyev was not particularly impressed by the new product.

Indeed, in the past, this situation arose every year; I made a choice in favor of a new iPhone and have never regretted it.

Looking ahead, I note that history repeated itself again. That is, the only thing better than an iPhone is a new iPhone. But let's look at this point in detail and in order.

Why “first impressions” and not a full review?

I'm late with the traditional review. After all, the phone went on sale more than a month ago and its reviews are already a dime a dozen on the Internet.

Why repeat? In this case, it is much more interesting and useful to write an experience of using a personal gadget, sharing the details and nuances of its operation, as I did in the case of the iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air 2 and other devices.

Next up is a 12-inch MacBook, Apple Watch and, of course, an iPhone 6s Plus, which I recently became the proud owner of.

But, as you know, first impressions are the brightest, the most interesting. Often it is they who determine the subsequent attitude towards the gadget and the scheme for its operation. If these impressions are not immediately transferred into the text, then literally in a week they will evaporate without a trace, or, rather, will be smeared in a thin layer over a future article on the topic of smartphone operating experience.

Therefore, I decided to first share, so to speak, concentrated information. I hope it helps someone with their choice. Besides, there is a lot to discuss here.

Physics

I prefer black , but in the case of the iPhone 6 Plus at the time of its purchase there was simply no alternative to white. Either I take white here and now, or I wait for who knows how much black.

I decided not to tempt fate, especially against the backdrop of last year’s excitement for the new product.

In the case of the iPhone 6s Plus, there was no need to rush, so I waited for the model in my favorite black color, and I personally like this option much more than any other alternatives.

All this is a matter of taste, however, black seems more monolithic (the windows of the sensors and front camera are not an eyesore) and looks more impressive.

In general, the dream of owning a big black iPhone has finally come true. The fact that the back panel is gray and not black doesn’t bother me at all.

On the contrary, I like it better than the black version in the old iPhone 5. The gray and black colors contrast well with each other.

Many people have expressed concern about the increased weight and thickness of the gadget, to the point that the device is “just terribly heavy,” in their words.

Well, the additional 20 g ( 192 g versus 172 g for the predecessor), of course, is felt, but for me it is completely uncritical.

Including when I'm lying on the couch and reading, holding the phone in one hand above me.

This does not negatively affect personal operating experience. Quite the contrary - the smartphone feels even more solid. As for the thickness increased by 0.1 mm, it is not noticeable at all.

Much more important is the less slippery body of the new product. This moment made me wildly happy. I don’t know how it happened, but the grip has become more secure and it’s easier to hold the phone in one hand. This is probably a feature of a new, more durable aluminum alloy, or the anodizing process has changed.

The problem of a slippery case is easily solved by using a case, but I prefer to work with the phone without unnecessary “clothing” and only use the CalypsoCrystal Wallet pocket, since I carry my smartphone mainly in my bag.

By the way, the phone heats up a little more than its predecessor, although nothing critical.

The display of both smartphones is almost identical. Is it possible that the beginner has a slightly cooler picture and likes it - the white color looks “whiter”. In addition, the light sensor reacts more accurately, and the automatic brightness of the iPhone 6s Plus adapts to external conditions better. Although everyone’s eyes are different, so this moment is individual.

The sound quality in the external speaker, according to first impressions, remained identical to its predecessor. Well, maybe a little more bass. In any case, the sound quality is excellent. In this regard, the iPhone 6/6 Plus and newcomers are superior to most competitors.

Speed

In addition to being a dialer and a gadget for consuming content on the go, the iPhone is also a work tool for me, used for typing texts. I talked about this in detail in my experience using the iPhone 6 Plus, so I won’t repeat myself.

As you understand, increased performance in a smartphone in this case will not be superfluous. After all, the process of typing also means working with a browser, mail, and a dictionary. You often have to switch between them, and in the process the predecessor reloaded web page tabs or reloaded Byword, after which he again had to open the document, and these are unnecessary steps.

Some of this text was typed on an iPhone 6s Plus and, let me tell you, the smartphone just flies ! Previously, typing on a phone was more of a compromise, but now it is a completely comfortable practice. Pages do not reload, the editor is always open in the background, instant switching between applications, instant response from the on-screen keyboard after that is a fairy tale.

The device feels even faster in typing mode than the iPad Air 2, which is not surprising. The processor is still faster, and the RAM is more productive.

Although I didn’t appreciate the phone’s performance immediately after taking it out of the box. At first I was delighted with how smooth and responsive the interface became. I can’t complain too much about it in its predecessor, but there were lags, sometimes very noticeable. Now they are gone.

Still, 2 GB of RAM for iOS means a lot, and a much more powerful processor too.

3D Touch

Here’s another thing for which I decided to upgrade my already top-end smartphone. 3D Touch is just the bomb!

For me, a constant headache while typing was moving the cursor to correct a mistake, change a word, etc. But now all this is done with one touch - there is simply no limit to the delight!

Camera

Do you often take photographs? Let's determine whether there are differences in cameras. Table below.

We found no differences in the basic characteristics of the cameras. The difference may be in additional functions - see the corresponding section of the review.

  • At the end of September, Apple presented an update to the sixth generation of its proprietary mobile line, and now the flagship branch of the championship has passed to the iPhone 6s smartphone and its enhanced version, the iPhone 6s Plus.
  • However, many users still have not figured out how the new products differ from the iPhone 6 and 6+ released last year.
  • Now we’ll find out what features each phone has, their strengths and external characteristics.

Differences between iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 6s Plus

iPhone 6s and 6S Plus - display features

When first getting acquainted with any touch device, the user immediately pays attention to the features of its display, as the brightest and most noticeable element on the front panel.

However, this element has no external differences between the 6+ and 6s+ - we still get a 5.5-inch screen with 1080x1920 pixels.

But upon closer acquaintance, a difference in sensory perception is immediately revealed: while the original had normal touch sensitivity, the display of the new product is able to recognize even the degree of pressure on the touch surface.

This innovation was achieved by introducing an additional capacitive layer into a standard screen unit using 3D Touch technology. The developers have expanded the capabilities of touch control, allowing functionality to be controlled not only through classic touches of icons, but also through pressure on elements.

Technical differences

The most important and most impressive update to the internal hardware of the iPhone 6s Plus compared to the standard device was the use of a fundamentally new 2-chip A9 processor with a proprietary M9 coprocessor in the creation.

As you know, the iPhone 6 Plus used the eighth version of the Apple microchip, which is inferior to the ninth in both performance and multitasking.

A newbie is able to maintain the normal functioning of several intensive programs at once without creating any glitches in the overall operation, while the previous iPhone did not cope with such tasks so well.

In addition, the new smartphone boasts an increased amount of active RAM: a full 2 gigabytes compared to the usual 1 in previous models. But given the fact that now 3 gigabytes are not something special for mobile devices, Apple should have decided on such an expansion a long time ago.

Camera and data sharing

Another pleasant bonus for fans of Apple technology is the increase in the resolution of the built-in mobile camera.

If previously all sixth-generation models used exclusively 8-megapixel camera units (albeit with improved stabilization), now the 6s Plus has 12 megapixels integrated into the system using the new iSight technology. This update allows you to shoot 4K video and create Live Photos - photos with sound.

The second significant improvement was the update of the front camera capabilities. Instead of the standard and not particularly appropriate 1.2 megapixels on the iPhone 6 Plus, users get 5 megapixels on the FaceTime HD module with Retina Flash. With such capabilities, taking a variety of selfies has become even more convenient.

The 6S Plus also beat its predecessor in the information transmission system. The new product is equipped with updated Wi-Fi and improved 4G LTE network technology. The improved iPhone allows you to exchange data and surf the Internet much faster than could be done on other models in the series.

In terms of external characteristics, the iPhone 6 Plus and 6s Plus are almost identical, only the updated version has added another additional color option to the list - rose gold. However, this point can hardly be called very important and necessary for most buyers.

Results

Let's summarize. For basic features, the iPhone 6s got 3 likes from us, and the iPhone 6s Plus got 7. But keep in mind that we didn't compare prices. Final table, why we liked:

iPhone 6siPhone 6s Plus
  • Thinner
  • Easier
  • Better contrast
  • Larger screen diagonal
  • Screen resolution is better
  • More pixels per inch of screen
  • Longer talk time
  • Lasts longer when browsing the Internet
  • Lasts longer when listening to music

3D Touch

Here’s another thing for which I decided to upgrade my already top-end smartphone. 3D Touch is just the bomb!

For me, a constant headache while typing was moving the cursor to correct a mistake, change a word, etc. But now all this is done with one touch - there is simply no limit to the delight!

You get used to the trick of moving the cursor by pressing hard from the first minutes and then it’s difficult to give it up. Press a little harder and you will begin to select the desired text. Double-click while moving the cursor (without lifting your finger from the screen) to select a word, triple-click to select the entire paragraph. Actually a fairy tale!

I also actively use 3D Touch to quickly switch between the last two applications or go to the multitasking menu. With force, you swipe from the left edge of the screen to the right - you switch between the two most recently launched programs. If you stop the movement in the middle of the screen, then you will remain in the multitasking menu.

With this function, in principle, the new iOS feature of returning to the previous application (the “Back to:” arrow in the upper left corner) is not needed. It was clearly introduced so that owners of devices without Force Touch support would not have to worry.

As for the use of 3D Touch technology in applications, I’m still getting used to it. I simply forget that you can now perform many usual actions with one touch, without entering the application. However, the longer I use the new product, the more delight I get from recognizing the force of touch. Quickly view notes, emails, tweets.

Moreover, all this already works in many third-party applications. Spark as my email client , and I view my Twitter feed using Tweetbot 4 [] - both fully support 3D Touch.
