Xiaomi Amazfit Bip S review: inexpensive smartwatch with impressive functionality

The Amazfit Bip smartwatch showed that devices of this kind can be both inexpensive and very functional. That is why the gadget became a hit. It was replaced by an update, the Amazfit Bip S model. The manufacturer presented it at CES 2022 in Las Vegas. How successful was the new product and what distinguishes it from its predecessor?

Filling: updated sensors

For Amazfit Bip owners, the company has prepared a couple of pleasant surprises that will seriously change the way they use their watches. The Bluetooth 5.0 module, which is now used to connect to a smartphone, allows the watch to work longer and increases the connection range. Now it is at least 10 meters, or 5- 6 in the presence of reinforced concrete structures between a person and a smartphone. In addition, the speed of working with the application has increased.

The GPS/GLONASS module is used from Sony - the accuracy is sufficient for amateur measurements, it starts almost instantly and draws an accurate track.

The heart rate sensor has been updated and now uses BioTracker PPG. Exactly the same as in the older Amazfit GTS and GTR models. The pressure sensor was removed - only the compass remained, as the most popular among users.

Amazfit Bip S package contents

In addition to the watch itself with a strap, the thick cardboard box contains a cradle for charging it, as well as instructions in several languages, including Russian.

Display quality

The new version features a 1.28-inch MIP display module that supports transflective technology: sunlight is reflected from the substrate. This ensures excellent visibility of information even in bright sunshine. In the dark, it is advisable to use the backlight, as the brightness level becomes minimal.

Screen resolution – 176x176 pixels. It is possible to change the backlight intensity, but only if the display is in the active state.

Amazfit Bip S design

The watch has the same rectangular shape as its predecessor. The only physical button is located on the right side of the device.

On the back of the watch there is a biometric sensor and two contacts for charging.

The case is made of polycarbonate, so the watch is quite light.

Amazfit Bip S comes in 4 color options: red, black, white and pink. The predecessor also had 4 colors, but the green and gray options turned out to be no longer in demand.

The removable silicone strap, 20 mm wide, received the color of the case, except for the red version – here the accessory turned out to be dark blue. Belts available in lengths of 110 and 85 mm.

Strap:

By default, smartwatches come with a standard silicone strap in the same color as the case, with the exception of the red option. The width of the strap is 20mm, it feels soft and pleasant to the touch, there is no smell:

The straps themselves are removable and equipped with quick-release locks, so replacement does not even require tools or accessories:

I prefer metal straps, so I plan to replace them. In addition, at first I had to get used to it a little, since the strap slides and catches very poorly when fastened. Otherwise there are no complaints, the clasp is reliable:

The stainless steel strap and other accessories can be viewed here and here

Amazfit Bip S screen

At first glance, the screen completely repeats the version of its predecessor - the diagonal has been preserved, and it is a successful type (reflective, does not fade in the sun and is energy efficient). But the number of colors has increased from 8 in its predecessor to 64. This makes the picture much brighter and more realistic. The main control of the watch is carried out using finger touches on the screen and swipes.

The Amazfit Bip S screen now supports the Always-On Display function, which the previous model did not have.

Amazfit Bip S software

Connection to a smartphone is carried out through a separate Amazfit Watch application (link for Android, link for iOS), and not through MiFit, like the first generation of watches.

To create a pair with a smartphone, you need to turn on the watch and scan the QR code that appears on the watch using the Amazfit Watch application. This procedure will allow you to pair with your smartphone via Bluetooth.

Using the Amazfit Watch app, you can customize the behavior of the watch for various types of events: notifications, alarms, screen unlocks, as well as set a goal for future workouts and track activity statistics for previous days: sleep quality, steps, heart function and much more.

Amazfit Bip S is equipped with a closed operating system that does not allow for the installation of third-party applications.

Is it worth upgrading?

Testing wearable electronics is impossible within a few weeks - most questions arise after 2-3 months, or even six months of active use in various modes.

So it is in this case: the battery testing turned out to be very approximate, although compared to all existing competitors, Amazfit Bip clearly stands out in its autonomy, since only devices from the Mi Band line are catching up with them.

And the latter are clearly inferior in terms of ease of use. Like the previous version, since Bip S already out of the box carries the functions that users asked for.

We definitely recommend them for purchase only to those who

  • buys Bip for the first time, and is not ready for flashing;
  • is really active in sports or trying to monitor health using wearable electronics.

The fact is that the Bip S measures the pulse much more accurately, and does not try to do it on a roll of toilet paper (users remember this terrible scandal with the Mi Band). There is virtually no difference between a medical device and a manual measurement, both during training and during normal use.

The pedometer also shows adequate numbers, without trying to turn a trip on public transport into a run. I will publish more detailed testing in a separate material in a couple of months. But for now, taking into account the enhanced protection, the Bip S are very good.

Features and capabilities of Amazfit Bip S

The new watch looks clearly more functional than its predecessor. The 40 official dials immediately attract attention. Amazfit Bip S communicates with the smartphone via Bluetooth 5.0, while the previous model worked with the fourth version of the protocol. The watch has a sports training section with 10 different programs, previously there were only 4.

The new biotracker from Huami can not only measure the pulse, but also monitor its condition, issuing notifications if the threshold value is exceeded. Previously, activity monitoring was present only in the older Amazfit GTS and GTR models. The sensor turned out to be more accurate than it was in Bip, and also consumes 5 times less energy than its predecessor.

A music control function has appeared, now you can switch tracks directly from the watch.

Standard functions have not gone away: stopwatch, alarm clock, timer, weather and others.

The main control of Amazfit Bip S is carried out by swiping and touching the screen.

Horizontal swipes scroll through the main screens: watch face, heart rate, steps, PAI (activity statistics), weather and player.

A vertical swipe from top to bottom opens Control Center, with buttons for flashlight, screen brightness, screen lock, and Do Not Disturb mode.

A vertical gesture from bottom to top opens a menu with notifications.

Pressing the physical wheel button while the watch face screen is displayed will launch a menu with various options, including:

  • Achievements – displays the user’s current activity (number of steps taken, calories burned, etc.),
  • PAI – Personal Activity Intelligence – measurement of the user’s physical activity based on heart rate and collected data (number of steps, pulse, height, age, weight).
  • Heart rate – activate the pulse sensor and view statistics;
  • Sports - select a training mode, including: outdoor running, walking, outdoor cycling, indoor running, indoor cycling, open water swimming, pool swimming, elliptical trainer, mountain climbing, trail running, skiing, free (strength training);
  • Compass;
  • Timer – There are two applications here: Stopwatch and Countdown.
  • Weather – weather forecast;
  • Music – music player that allows you to control playback;
  • Alarm clock – set and change existing alarm clocks;
  • Settings - this section contains options that allow you to change: watch faces, screen brightness, the action of the wheel button when pressed for a long time, as well as the Find phone item and system actions: Power off and Reset.

To return to a higher level, you need to make a gesture from left to right.

The main purpose of Amazfit Bip S is to display not only the time, but also useful information: notifications about calls and messages from various smartphone applications, the number of steps taken, the weather forecast, the name of the track played by the smartphone.

The Amazfit Bip S's home screen is an information watch face that displays widgets with important information in the central part of the screen (such as weather, heart rate or reminders screen).

Widgets on the watch face can be changed and added - you can display a stopwatch, alarm clock, charge indicator and any other of about 20 available functions.

During training, the watch not only monitors your speed and distance traveled, but also calculates the calories burned.

Activity leads to the accrual of points and the issuance of virtual rewards.

Heart rate measurement is quite accurate (except for swimming training), which is quite sufficient for fitness classes.

It is also necessary to note the possibility of receiving notifications from various applications from a smartphone.

Unfortunately, this function has not been developed in Amazfit Bip S - you cannot respond to notifications, nor can you communicate by voice using the watch. You can only see the incoming call and the presence of a new message from the messenger.

Connecting services to receive notifications is done in the Amazfit Watch application.

Conclusion

I can’t say that Amazfit Bip U has become an integral part of my life. Yes, getting notifications on your phone is cool. It is with this vague concept that I can characterize most of the functionality. It's fun to measure your stress level, it's fun to look at the weather on your hand and compare the number of steps on different days. I'm sure if I were involved in sports, the watch would show itself even better. Spring is ahead. You can also run at the stadium in the neighboring yard. Again, it will be cool to see what data the watch collects after running. They really make you move and be more active. But these are already thoughts about the benefits of fitness watches in general, which have been raised more than once and became disgusting back in the days of the first Apple Watch.

As for the Amazfit Bip U model specifically, I can say that it is good. But with a clear conscience I can recommend it to girls and people with small hands. Personally, I was disappointed by their size. This is perhaps the only and most important complaint. In the future I will definitely choose something more impressive. Or I’ll return to the classics and stop doing nonsense.

Autonomy of Amazfit Bip S (how long does the battery last)

Amazfit Bip S has an impressive battery life thanks to the choice of electronic components and energy optimization technology. Naturally, the battery life is greatly influenced by the usage scenarios of the device. On average, we can talk about 12-13 days of device operation in the mode of three workouts per week for 45 minutes with GPS turned on, 15 minutes of daily screen operation, 150 push notifications on the screen, 30 wrist raises to view the time and 5 minutes for other operations each day.

If you leave tracking turned on, the watch can remain active for up to 22 hours.

With not very active use - time viewing + 100 daily notifications and screen brightness at 10%, Amazfit Bip S can last up to 40 days.

General impression

Xiaomi Bip S Lite is good because it allows you to completely not worry about the need to recharge the charge. It is enough to connect them to the network once a month - and the device will work autonomously.

The screen can hardly be called very bright, but the information is clearly readable. The number of workouts is relatively small, but the PPG sensor accurately determines the heart rate and signals if the indicators are exceeded.

This is a great option for those who want to constantly monitor their own activity. If you need to track your route, you will have to take your phone with you due to the lack of a geomodule in the device. As a result, the model truly deserves the title of people's smart watch, because it has decent functionality at a very attractive price.

Water resistance of Amazfit Bip S

The Amazfit Bip S watch is waterproof to a depth of 50 meters, and the water should not be salty (sea, ocean). The manufacturer guarantees full operation of the watch when exposed to splashes, rain or snow, while swimming in fresh water, or taking a cold shower. However, the watch cannot be used during scuba diving, high-speed water sports, or diving.

Huami Amazfit Bip is a popular smartwatch that is winning more and more fans with its simplicity, low cost and excellent functionality. And not only in China, but all over the world. Although the device is simpler than its “brothers”, since it does not have a full-fledged operating system installed, it will be difficult to immediately understand all the nuances, and it will take some time. Instructions for use allow you to speed up the process many times over.

The most important thing you need to know about the Amazfit Bip S watch

  • The price of Amazfit Bip S is 2 times cheaper than Amazfit GTS;
  • The main difference between Amazfit Bip S and Amazfit GTS is the quality of the screen;
  • The watch has a beautiful fashionable design. The device is offered in four colors.
  • The average operating time of the watch on one charge is 13 days;
  • You can activate the screen by raising your wrist or pressing the wheel button;
  • The watch is waterproof, you can swim and shower in it.
  • Third-party applications cannot be installed. Most of the settings are available in the Amazfit Watch application on your smartphone.
  • Heart rate measurement is quite accurate for any sports activity, except swimming training.
  • There is no speaker or microphone. There is vibration.

Battery life

The device demonstrates solid autonomy. One charge is enough to work for 40 days with the heart rate turned on in the background, provided that the training modes and GPS are not activated.

Accordingly, autonomy will decrease if you often turn on the screen and use additional options.
