There are very few people left who have not encountered web browser failures: it either won’t start, crashes, or displays some kind of error. The browser is our guide to the Internet and, more often than others, is subject to various violations, such as infection by viruses, installation of incorrect or problematic extensions, failure of settings and system files. There are dozens of varied reasons why the browser on a computer does not open: from the most banal random failures to technically complex problems. We will tell you how to fix them all.
Changing the registry
- Find a combination of keys and the English letter R on the keyboard - press them at the same time;
- The “Run” window should appear, then you need to enter the command as in the picture below.
- We need to check that along the path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\ – there is no value in the “AppInit_DLLs” parameter. If this is the case, then open it by double-clicking and delete the excess.
- Now go to the path: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\ - and do the same with the same file. By the way, it may not exist, but you need to check it yourself.
- Restart your computer or laptop.
Details
As a rule, there are certain reasons for such program behavior. But it is not always possible to determine exactly what caused the problem in a particular case. Even experts are often at a loss.
Therefore, we have to go through and consider all possible solutions to the problem. However, the main problem is that in this case there are quite a few solutions. Therefore, the process may take a long time.
In this material we will present the most effective measures to restore functionality to the Google Chrome browser. Let's start with the simplest and most obvious options. And only then will we move on to more complex ones.
Method #1: Disabling a frozen process
Often Chrome does not want to start for the simple reason that the process is already running and is not responding. The system interprets this as meaning that the browser is already running and there is no need to start a new copy. And a separate frozen process is to blame for everything. This happens quite often in Windows 7. And therefore you need to know how to deal with it.
The main problem is that you simply cannot see this process. To do this, you will have to use the appropriate tools of the Windows operating system. Namely, the task manager, which is also hidden from the eyes of curious users. The algorithm of actions to solve the problem will be like this:
- Press the Ctrl + Alt + Del .
- In the window that appears, click on the item “Launch task manager” .
- In the top menu, open the “Processes” .
- Right-click on the chrome column. exe .
- Select from the list of options "End Process Tree".
- We confirm the action.
After this, you can close the manager and try to start the browser again. In some cases, however, you will have to restart your computer. However, this method will only help if the problem really was a frozen process. If not, then you need to move on to the next chapter.
Method No. 2: Delete the user profile file
Chrome stores all user settings in a special directory. If this file is damaged, the web browser will not start in any case. After all, he simply has nowhere to get information about the download. Also, if incorrect settings were applied, they will also be stored in this file, preventing the browser from starting.
The good news is that this file can be updated. And for this you don’t even need a web browser (which won’t start). After all, the file is stored in a specific folder on the computer’s hard drive. In fact, everything is very simple. Here are detailed instructions on how and what to do:
- Press Win + R. _
- Now enter in the text field %LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\User Data\ and press the button "OK" or key Enter.
- We will be taken to the directory with Google Chrome settings. Here you need to find a folder named Default and delete it.
After this, you can try to launch the web browser. During startup, it will create a completely new directory with custom settings. You just have to configure all the parameters again. If that was the case, then this option will definitely help. But if not, then move on to the next chapter.
Method number 3: Disabling the antivirus
A third-party antivirus may also be blocking the launch of the web browser. Moreover, this happens with Kaspersky, and with Avast, and with ESET, and with many other products. We recommend disabling protection for a while.
Method number 4: Search and remove viruses
If Google Chrome still does not start and does not show any signs of life, then most likely there are viruses on the user’s computer. They can not only cause the browser not to start, but also cause much more serious problems that will affect the stability of the entire system.
Therefore, you need to get rid of malicious objects. We will look at performing this procedure using the ESET Internet Security antivirus as an example, but you can use any other:
- Open the main ESET window.
- After that, click on the item “Scan your computer” . It is located in the left column of the main antivirus window.
- Then select the tile that says “Advanced Scanning” , and then in the submenu “Custom Scanning” .
- A window will appear asking you to select objects to scan. Here you need to mark all available locations.
- The final stage: click on the “Scan as admin” .
The scan will start immediately. If malicious objects are found during the scanning process, they will be immediately deleted. Once the scanning process is complete, you will be able to view a log with all the information.
After scanning, you must restart your computer. And only after that you can check the functionality of the web browser. If the problem was due to viruses, then this option should definitely help.
Method #5: Reinstall Google Chrome
The exact same situation happens if viruses manage to damage the files of the web browser itself. Then he may behave inappropriately. And in this case the browser will completely refuse to launch. And there is only one way out: reinstalling the entire application. Otherwise, there’s nothing to think about work.
First you need to take care of the installation file. You need to download it from the developer’s official website in advance. Only then can you proceed to uninstall the old version and install the new one. However, you should not download the installer from fraudulent sites. You can catch some kind of virus. It's better to use the official website. Here are detailed instructions on how and what to do:
- Open the item "Control Panel" from the Start menu.
- Switch the content display option to “icons” .
- Then click on the inscription "Programs and Features".
- Now we look in the list of installed Google Chrome and right-click on it.
- In the menu that appears, select the item "Delete".
- The installation wizard will open. Here, optionally configure the clearing of user data.
- And then click "Delete".
- Download the installation file ChromeSetup.exe.
- Next, let's launch it.
- We are waiting for the procedure to complete.
That's all. Chrome has been completely reinstalled. Now it should definitely start and work without problems. This is the last solution and usually always helps. But you should resort to it only in the most extreme cases.
Resetting routes
- If the Internet still only works in Internet Explorer, then let's try resetting the routes. Click “Start” - enter “cmd” or “Command line” into the search bar, then launch the console as administrator.
- Next we write: route -f
- Press Enter.
After this, the routes should have been reset, check other browsers again. Alternatively, I would reboot the computer again.
The Internet is available, but the browser on the computer does not open
If the Internet is connected, but the browser does not open and says no connection, then the source of the malfunction may be malware or a certain utility that causes the login to be blocked. The problem occurs in all known web browsers without exception.
In most cases, problems are associated with viruses that destabilize the entire system. To remove them, just connect an antivirus application.
Important! When the Internet is available, but the browser still does not work, even after checking with an antivirus program, the problem can be solved in another way. Don't forget to check your connection parameters and your custom settings.
System error messages
DNS Settings
Sometimes the provider provides crooked DNS addresses that may have problems. Because of this, some applications work incorrectly or crookedly. We'll fix it now.
- Press and R.
- Command: ncpa.cpl.
- Next, you need to choose exactly the connection through which the Internet is connected: wireless or cable. Now, right-click and go to “Properties”.
- In protocol 4, you need to select a property and set the DNS manually. We expose: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 – these are servers from Google, proven and reliable.
- Finally, click “OK” twice.
User profile corruption
If the cause of problems with the browser is a damaged user profile, then you can delete the profile folder. In this case, all personal data will be lost. The User Data folder located at:
- %USERPROFILE%Local SettingsApplication DataGoogleChrome (for example, C:%USERPROFILE%Local SettingsApplication DataGoogleChrome) – for Windows XP;
- %LOCALAPPDATA%GoogleChrome (for example, C:%LOCALAPPDATA%GoogleChrome) - for Windows 7, 8 and Vista.
If this doesn't help, you can try uninstalling the browser and installing it again.
Virus scanning and computer cleaning
First of all, you need to check your computer with the antivirus program that you have installed. If you have not installed any application yet, then urgently install at least a free version or a trial version. If the antivirus search does not produce results, then you can use antivirus utilities - they work a little differently, so the likelihood of finding an attacker increases. There is nothing complicated, just download one of the applications: Malware, AVZ, AdwCleaner.
After removing the viruses, I would also clean the computer of various debris. To do this, download the CCleaner program. After launch:
- “Standard cleaning” - “Analysis” - then we wait for some time and remove all unnecessary things.
- Now go to the “Registry” section, click search for problems, select everything and fix it.
- Sometimes network problems begin, after installing some programs, remember if you installed something before. Some apps may install themselves in the background, so it's worth checking. Go to “Tools” – “Uninstall programs” – then set sorting by date. Remove suspicious software that was installed earlier. I would also generally advise removing everything unnecessary and unnecessary.
- And now the most important thing is that the attacker can hang in startup and you can simply turn it off. To do this, in the same section, go to the “Start” or “Startup” section. Click on "Enabled" to see all enabled programs. It is necessary to turn off suspicious and unclear applications, especially those that have a strange path and do not have a publisher.
- After everything we reboot.
Terminating processes and rebooting the PC
Sometimes restarting the program or rebooting the device is enough to restore the browser to work correctly. There are two ways to reboot, let's look at them using Google Chrome as an example:
- Via the taskbar or browser shortcut on the desktop. To do this, you need to find the corresponding icon and click on it. If there is no response, you can try launching the browser through the taskbar.
If this attempt was unsuccessful, open the “start” menu, select “all programs” and try again; - Resume the browser using the chrome://restart command, open in a new tab.
After entering the command, press “Enter”. The browser will restart automatically.
If these steps do not help, you will need to restart your computer. In the “start” panel, select “shut down” and “restart”.
If the device does not respond to commands in any way, press the power off button and hold it until the device turns off, then restart it.
System Restore
It happens that after cleaning from viruses or malware, the system is so damaged that it does not want to function normally. Therefore, in this case, only a system restore can help. The easiest and fastest way to start this service is to enter a name in the start menu. After startup, select the earliest restore point and launch. We are waiting for a reboot.
Changed hosts file
Some malware can modify operating system files. The hosts file is most often subject to change, since it is responsible for the network connection. Using the Internet, determine the contents of a “healthy” host file. To find the hosts file, open the local drive on which the operating system is installed (“C” by default), then follow the following path: Windows-System32-drivers. Open the hosts file using Notepad. Check the information contained in the file, it should correspond to a “healthy” host file. All incorrect lines should be deleted. After that, save the changes and close the file.
Additional Tips
First of all, make sure that there are no unnecessary icons on the connection. If they still exist, then follow the links:
- Yellow triangle
- Red cross
Try disabling your antivirus program or Firewall for a while. If the connection is via Wi-Fi or through a router, then reboot it. Try completely uninstalling and downloading one of those browsers that do not want to launch. Make sure your VPN is turned off on your computer if you have previously used it. In the browser you are using, disable plugins and extensions in the settings.
Reinstallation
If there is a problem with any program, then I advise you to try updating it through the “Tools” or “Help” menu. If the update is interrupted, then go to the official website and download a new version of the browser you are using.
Also, from my experience, I can say that there is a possibility of glitches in new versions of programs, and therefore if an updated version is currently installed, then try installing an older one. If this helps you, then you will have to temporarily “sit” on the previous version, and after a few updates you will enjoy the new one.
