What kind of phone do I have: find out the make and model of the smartphone in different ways

There are a lot of situations in which you may need to find out your phone model. Colleagues will be interested in your new smartphone. And if you need to take it in for repairs, the service center will naturally ask for the exact make and model. When contacting communication quality issues, your mobile operator's support staff will also want to know the name of your device. Of course, in most cases they will tell you where to look for detailed information about the gadget. If not, this article will help.

Where to view phone information

You can get information about your device – its make and model – in three ways:

  1. Using operating systems (Android, iOS).
  2. Using third party applications.
  3. From the documentation for the device and the inscriptions on its body.

The system settings contain only basic information about the device, and with the help of installed programs you can get additional information about its “stuffing”.

Different types of smartphone models

By the word “model” we are accustomed to understand the name of the smartphone. For example, ZTE Axon 9 Pro. In this case, the model is Axon 9 Pro. But in the information about the phone there is a completely different name - A2019G. This is the phone model, which is also called the serial number or identification number.

The public and factory name of a model are often two fundamentally different things. This is important to consider, since a manufacturer can produce several types of devices with the same name, which differ greatly in technical characteristics.

For example, Apple produces iPhone X with different amounts of permanent memory: 64 GB and 256 GB. In versions for China, the tenth iPhone has two serial numbers: A1901 and A1902, while devices with type code MTAJ1KC/A are supplied to the international market. Accordingly, two externally identical devices have the same name - iPhone X, but different model numbers.

Apple separates the models of its devices, which cannot be said about Android smartphones. It all depends on the specific manufacturer. For example, my phone only shows the serial number.

The simplest way to define a model

It doesn't matter whether you have an HTC or Samsung phone. You need to remove the cover and then remove the battery. There is a sticker inside the phone that contains the following information:

  • Mobile device model;
  • Serial number;
  • A digital code consisting of 15 characters. It contains information about the modification of the phone, the manufacturer, as well as the date of manufacture;
  • Reference information (required by service center specialists).

It should be noted that in this way you can get information even about old mobile phones.

How to find out your smartphone model without third-party programs

On Android devices

On Android devices, model information is usually located in the About Phone section of the system settings. Depending on the version and shell of Android, the name of this section may be: “Phone information”, “Phone data”, etc. It can be located either in the main settings menu or in one of the submenus. For example, on my phone it is hidden in the “System” submenu.

To find out your phone model, do the following:

  1. go to system settings;

  2. find the “About phone” menu item, and if it is not there, then the section with system information;

  3. go to the “About phone” section;

In the screenshot above you can see that the name of the smartphone is indicated under the name of the section - this is the name of the device, which is used for identification when pairing with other devices via Bluetooth. By default, it will almost certainly coincide with the model name, but if desired, it can be easily changed in the settings. Therefore, you should not blindly trust what is written here.

  1. in the next menu, find the item “Model” or “About device”.

And this is an example screenshot from another smartphone:

By the way, in the same menu you can find out a lot of useful information about the phone:

  • What version of Android does it work on?
  • Which mobile operator is connected to?
  • IP and MAC addresses.
  • Technical parameters: processor, memory and display resolution, etc.

On iOS devices

The big advantage of Apple mobile devices is that they all run on a single operating system with the same shell. That is, in any Apple smartphone or tablet, the path to the menu section with information about the device looks the same:

  1. go to settings and select the “Basic” section;

  2. then open “About this device”;

Here you will find the name and model number.

How to find out the model name of a smartphone using third-party applications

The Google Play Market has many programs that can show the most detailed information about your device, including the serial number. Conventionally, they can be divided into two categories:

  1. benchmarks – applications for testing performance;
  2. monitors – programs for monitoring the status of a smartphone.

As an example, here are three apps that I like the most.

3DMark

3DMark is a benchmark with which all popular bloggers test smartphones. After installation, the program will automatically detect the device model name. To see it, press the “Device” button on the main screen.

The same section contains detailed information about the performance of the gadget and a specification that presents the technical characteristics.

However, the application only shows general information about the model, which is provided by the manufacturing company to software developers. There is no data for your specific phone number here. In addition, the program does not recognize smartphones.

CPU-Z

CPU-Z is a mobile version of a popular computer program for monitoring the state of the processor. It differs from its “big brother” in that it monitors not only the processor, but generally all components of the device.

The model number can be found in the “Device” section.

Registered users have the opportunity to check their smartphone for authenticity.

The mobile CPU-Z interface is in English.

Droid Hardware Info

Droid Info has more observable parameters than CPU-Z, and there is a Russian language. The model number of the smartphone is displayed on the home screen here.

On the box and back cover of the device

We found out how to find out your phone model using the OS and third-party applications. But what to do if the device, for example, does not turn on? In this case, it remains to be identified by the markings applied. Of course, if there is one.

Smartphones produced for the Chinese market always have a serial number on the back cover.

In the case of international versions, the situation is more complicated. Instead of the serial number, certification information is placed there, and the name and model number can only be indicated on the box and in the phone passport.

IMPORTANT: The portal assures that the relevance of the article is quite high. The article was created in 2014, so you can use it at any time of the day for several years, since the topic of obtaining data on the device model has remained unchanged for an extremely long time. It is noteworthy that when buying mobile devices you need to be extremely careful and check the IMEI and its documents (we are talking about a mobile phone).

How to recognize a smartphone by external signs

Brand on the body and boot screen of the device

I have not come across a single smartphone that does not have a brand logo on the back. Above, below, in the middle - somewhere there is always the name of the manufacturing company, and sometimes the model of the device. The same applies to the loading screen: on any original smartphone you will definitely be shown the brand logo.

For example, this is what my ZTEAxon 9 Pro looks like from the back

Smartphones that are difficult to confuse with others

Every self-respecting mobile phone manufacturer strives to make the design of their devices unique. Especially flagships. Knowing the distinctive features of a particular brand, you can determine the company that produced your smartphone. This works well with Korean and American devices, but difficulties may arise with identifying “Chinese” devices. Although not with everyone - and among them there are companies that stand out from the general background.

Samsung

The company's flagship smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy S21 line, are easily recognized by the characteristic location of the camera module. Visually, it seems that it is not built into the phone, but as if it is put on it.

Non-flagship Samsung models can also be identified by their cameras. They are arranged in the letters “G”, “P” or “L”. The photo below shows the Samsung A21.

LG

I would say that this brand stands out for its minimalism when it comes to cameras. They are always located as compactly as possible. Often they are simply recessed into the body.

Asus Zenfone

Before the birth of Asus Zenfone 6, phones of this brand did not stand out in anything remarkable. But the manufacturer equipped the sixth and seventh generations with a unique folding camera module. The number of latter smartphones differ from each other.
