How to choose the best pedometer - TOP 9 models of pocket, hand, belt

Walking is considered the most natural and safe method of maintaining physical fitness. But to lead a healthy lifestyle, you need to take at least 10-12.5 thousand steps per day (or even more if we are talking about a person losing weight). Otherwise there will be no benefit. Of course, it is not possible to count steps on your own, and therefore, in order to control this indicator, it is worth purchasing the best pedometer on the market, based on technical characteristics and customer reviews. Today's rating contains the best pedometers in terms of ease of use, measurement accuracy and a number of other parameters.

Which pedometer would you choose or recommend?

Take the survey

How do capacitive and piezoelectric accelerometers work?

Electrical accelerometers are not far from mechanical accelerometers in terms of their operating principle. I will try to simplify the operating principles of accelerometers as much as possible, so do not forget that in real devices everything is somewhat more complicated, although it works thanks to the same laws.

There are different types of accelerometers, but the most common are two types: capacitive and piezoelectric. To make the operating principles more clear, I drew a simple diagram:

In capacitive accelerometers, the sensitive element is capacitor plates. The capacitance of a capacitor is inversely proportional to the distance between the plates. When a moving load presses on one of the plates, the distance decreases and, accordingly, the capacity increases. The microcontroller registers the change in capacitance at the accelerometer outputs and understands that movement has occurred.

Piezoelectric accelerometers use crystals of piezoelectric substances instead of plates. A common piezoelectric is crystalline quartz, but I'm not sure what kind of quartz is installed in the accelerometers of bracelets. Most likely, there is something creepy in there like lead zirconate titanate or something similar.

The piezoelectric effect consists of polarization (the appearance of a potential difference) of the material during deformation. Just like in a capacitive accelerometer, when a load moves, it presses on the piezoelectric crystal, which compresses and generates a potential difference, which is registered by the microcontroller potentiometer.

Instructions for the pedometer

Before you start using the device, you need to configure it correctly and study the instructions. And the first thing that is required from the buyer is to install a special application on a smartphone or tablet. After registering in the application, you need to activate the device. Depending on the manufacturer and type of pedometer, this item may differ, which is usually indicated in the instructions for the device.

After this, you can start using the pedometer directly. Such a device synchronizes with a smartphone, tablet or computer, transmitting data about your activity, the number of kilometers traveled, steps and other indicators. You also need to control the operation of the device and your own physical activity through a smartphone or other gadget. Some modern fitness trackers have a small screen that allows you to see the time and the latest metrics about the hours you have walked.

How to set up a pedometer

Setting up such a device is very simple. To do this, you will need to enter your height, body weight and date of birth in the application. This is done so that the device selects the most appropriate standards in a particular case. Usually all this is done step by step, the application itself shows what to do next, so problems usually do not arise.

As for the bracelet itself, it does not require any setup or calibration. It is enough just to put it on correctly and fix it well on your hand. Otherwise, the device may count data inaccurately, thinking that hand movements are steps.

Secrets of choosing a pedometer - which model to choose?

Let's start with the fact that the most accurate are electromechanical and electronic devices that are designed to be worn on your hand or in your pocket. But the most inexpensive models are mechanical ones, which analyze information based on pendulum technology.

Electronic pedometers are the most accurate

If you want to record all your movements, then give preference to a pocket pedometer. For people who jog, bracelet models are more suitable. The clip-on device is the best option for everyday use.

Note! If you want to lose weight, be sure to choose a model that can count the number of calories burned. A device with a heart rate monitor will be useful for those who have problems with the cardiovascular system.

How to choose the right pedometer
It is also desirable that the device be synchronized with a mobile phone - via Wi-Fi (fast, but requires serious energy consumption) or via Bluetooth (a more economical option).

Video - How the pedometer works

A Brief History of Pedometers

The prototype of pedometers is an odometer - a device that counts the number of wheel revolutions. The first odometer was invented at the beginning of our era by the Greek mechanic and mathematician Heron of Alexandria. For a long time, odometers were used in cartography and military affairs to clarify distances, but now you can see them in any car.

The great Leonardo da Vinci is considered the creator of the pedometer. Taking into account the development of technology during the years of his life (mid-15th - early 16th centuries), there was no talk of compactness and convenience - according to the drawings, the pedometer was a pendulum mechanism attached to a belt (third drawing in the picture). We do not know whether such a pedometer was implemented in practice, or whether it remained, like many other ideas of the genius, on paper, but, nevertheless, this device could well count steps.

In subsequent centuries, pedometers developed in the same direction as mechanical watches that were similar in design, but, unlike watches, they remained only a high-tech toy. The pedometer of the first half of the 20th century was indistinguishable from the outside from a pocket watch, and inside it had a similar mechanism - vibrations of a suspended load set in motion a system of gears, which, in turn, moved the hands indicating the number of steps. Later, watchmakers began to use the principle of a pedometer to automatically wind watches from the movement of the hand.

Pedometers were introduced to the people in the 1960s by Japanese entrepreneur Yoshiro Hitano, who began selling them under the Manpo-Kei brand, promoting the idea of 10,000 steps a day. His pedometers were still mechanical, but over time, mechanics were replaced by electronics. In electronic pedometers, instead of the pressure of a load on a spring attached to gears, they began to use a change in the capacitance of capacitors or potential (piezoelectric effect) under mechanical action. The mechanism itself that records movement inside the pedometer is called an accelerometer.

Why do fitness bracelets count steps incorrectly?

Now there is not a single tracker in the world that will show you an absolutely accurate number of steps.

Why?

No matter where you attach your fitness tracker, you will make unpredictable movements throughout the day, some of which the tracker will mistakenly detect as steps. Driving a car, eating food, working with a computer mouse, for example. In addition, each of us walks differently, and currently there is no algorithm that takes into account the characteristics of any gait and accurately distinguishes steps from non-steps. For example, here a person tested several pedometers and posted the results. The calculation error by different devices ranged from -30% to +10%. It's funny that the most accurate result was shown not by the fitness bracelet, but by the iPhone 5s.

In theory, there is nothing wrong with a small error of 5-10%, because the very essence of the tracker is not in exact numbers, but in displaying the amount of work you have done.

Today you took 8,000 steps, and tomorrow – 5,000, which means that the day has passed inactively, you need to push yourself. The next day, you've passed your recommended 11,000 and can rest with a sense of accomplishment. I don’t see the point in tracking your movements down to the step in everyday life, just as there is no point in counting every gram when losing weight.

Review of applications on the phone

Despite the accuracy of electronic pedometers, the most popular way to count steps is to use phone apps:

  • Runtastic Pedometer. The first top app in the App Store and Play Market. Accurately counts steps and has a stylish design. Sends notifications every day reminding you to go for a walk;
  • Noom Walk Pedometer . A less accurate application with an unpleasant interface, it often cheats and counts steps on public transport. The only advantage over analogues is low energy consumption. The application consumes only 2% per day;
  • Pedometer 2.0. The application is stylish, but has many shortcomings. The system is sensitive and reacts to the slightest movement of the phone. Be sure to indicate the type of activity. The advantage is that the application shows how long it took to travel the distance;
  • Health on iPhone. The most convenient and accurate application. Steps and kilometers are calculated automatically. The app even measures the number of floors climbed per day. “Health” keeps detailed records. Even after a year you will be able to see how far you have gone.

We recommend downloading all applications and choosing the best one. For Android users we recommend Runtastic Pedometer, IOS – Health.

How to set up a pedometer?

Have you chosen a watch but don't know how to use it? Read the instructions and start using.

  1. Make sure the watch supports the platform (IOS, Android) of your phone.
  2. Write the name of the watch in the App Store and Play Market search engine and download the application.
  3. Register in the application and fill out all the necessary data: weight, gender, age, proportions;
  4. The clock is activated and starts working. Now you can control the device and add data from your phone.

Reasons for incorrect values

Before you panic about a device malfunction, it is recommended to make sure that you follow absolutely all the rules for its operation.

First, it’s worth re-reading how the device works:

  • The ambient temperature should not be lower than minus 10 and higher than plus forty.
  • Sand, dust and other debris should not get inside the housing.
  • The device must not come into contact with corrosive chemicals.
  • When disassembling the device, the use of sharp objects is not allowed.

If the pedometer does not have close enough contact with the owner, it may not display steps, especially for the bracelet - its entire surface must be in contact with the skin. The most accurate value will be displayed on an asphalt road. Unfortunately, an error of about five percent is possible for other types of activity.

In order to check the accuracy of the selected device, it is recommended to do the following:

  • configure the device according to personal parameters;
  • walk 30 steps, counting each one;
  • check the data.

The pedometer can be used not only for walking on a flat surface, but also on stairs, on mountains, as well as for running and even cycling. Thus, it is absolutely necessary for those interested in maintaining good physical shape. The global approach that a pedometer brings has now gone far beyond the counting of meters.

Huawei Honor Band

A MicroUSB cable and a docking station are included with bracelets from the well-known company Huawei. There is no need to remove the capsule for charging; a connector is hidden behind one half of the strap. In this case, you need to connect the bracelet to the docking station, and the other end of the cord to a power source, for example, a USB port on a PC or laptop, a smartphone charger, a portable battery, etc. Any device with a USB connector is suitable for charging.
