Popular causes of breakdowns and their solutions
Xiaomi may not charge due to serious damage or improper handling. Sometimes you can restore the charger yourself, even if the phone does not respond to the connection. Before you start panicking, let's see what you can do.
- Debris has entered the charging hole . If you carry your phone with you all the time, dust, grains of sand, and other debris may get into the USB port. Inspect it carefully, then blow out the hole (it is recommended to use a can of compressed air for this) and clean it with the bristles of a toothbrush. After this, carefully insert the charger into the port;
- Oxidation of USB port contacts . Very often this problem is encountered by users who use their gadget in conditions of high humidity. Also, oxidation of the phone charging connector can occur if the device is not used for a long time. To solve the problem, turn off your smartphone, moisten the needle in alcohol and clean the contacts. The removal operation must be carried out as carefully as possible.
It is important not to overdo it with alcohol!
- System failure . The reason that the gadget does not charge may be a simple failure in its system. To avoid the problem, simply hard reset your Xiaomi phone to factory settings, deleting all data, or at least update the firmware.

Ask a Question
The Android operating system collects statistics about the use of the device in order to prevent it from completely discharging. Systematic battery depletion disrupts the operation of the power controller and prevents the device from accepting charge as usual.
Resetting settings and data can be done in two ways:
- Through settings . Go to settings -> “Advanced settings” -> “Backup and reset” -> “Reset settings” (or “Reset to factory settings” depending on the version of Miui);
- Via Recovery . Press the power and volume up buttons to enter Recovery mode. Select “Wipe Data” and then “Wipe All Data” (use the volume and power buttons to select an item and confirm).
If you used the device to store important data, you need to copy it somewhere or make a backup, otherwise it will be lost . After this, let the phone fully charge. Do not forget that when you turn it on, you will be asked for a password for your mi account. If you don't remember it, you won't be able to access your phone .
Reset
The most radical method, which should be used only if the other recommendations did not help solve the charging problem. Upon completion of the procedure, all user information will be deleted from the memory, including applications or files that prevent the phone from gaining charge.
- Turn off your device.
- Turn it on by holding down the Power and Volume Up keys.
- Wait until the settings menu appears on the display.
- Find “Wipe and Reset” in it, then click “Wipe All Date” and confirm the actions.
Now the smartphone will charge up to 100 percent again. Before resetting the settings, create a backup copy of the necessary files.
Checking components
When a smartphone stops charging, components that fail are often to blame. Every element needs to be checked.
Checking the USB cable
Test your USB cable on another device. This will help you understand where the problem lies, in the phone, cable or charger. In addition, you should do the opposite - use a working cable from another gadget.

Ask a Question
Externally, the cable sheath may appear completely normal, but inside there may be broken wires or a problem with the contacts. This is especially true for non-original products.
Checking the adapter
This method of solving the problem is similar to the previous one. Try using:
- Another power supply with similar characteristics;
- Another adapter with different characteristics;
- USB ports (versions 2.0 and 3.0) of other devices (computer, set-top box, car charger).
Battery check
If the device does not have a removable battery and you do not have experience in repairing equipment, then it is better to skip this method.
Modern batteries last much longer than those of the past, but they still break down and as a result may not charge.
Each battery has its own lifespan, which is expressed in charge or discharge cycles. When the maximum quantity for these indicators is reached, it fails.
To check the performance of the battery, if possible, remove it from the phone and check for smudges, thickening, or signs of aging on the surface. However, the most reliable indicator is to check with a multimeter, which you can find from a phone repair specialist. If the readings are low, you need to buy a new battery.
Other troubleshooting options
In addition to the above recommendations, we have collected several tips shared by Xiaomi smartphone owners to solve charging problems:
- if the gadget does not charge when turned on, try turning it off and connecting it to a power outlet;
- turn off the GPS module while charging, as it consumes a lot of energy;
- return the phone to the time when it was charging normally. This action can only be performed if you have previously performed a backup;
- download an antivirus and run a virus scan. It is possible that malware is interfering with the correct operation of the battery;
- If the phone charges, but takes a very long time to charge, the firmware may be too heavy for it. In this case, install a simplified version of the shell.
If Xiaomi does not charge and does not turn on
It happens that the device shows no signs of life at all. In this case, the indicator (if available) may light up. In the main cases this is:
- Problem with the motherboard or power controller;
- Deep discharge of the battery (this is possible even immediately after purchase, on the first day of use);
- Recharging your smartphone.
In the first case, an ordinary user cannot repair the device himself at home. In the event of a deep discharge of the battery, there is a chance. As a rule, this happens when the gadget is idle for a long time (for example, in a warehouse in a store), discharged in the cold, or the battery is severely worn out.
All you need is to connect the device to a stable current source for a long time (from 5 hours to 24).
- If you are using a native charger, first connect the cable to the phone, and then plug the adapter into the outlet;
- If you are using a non-original cable or charger, make sure that all elements are rated for 2 Amperes, 5V;
- Use the USB port of another device. If charging does not work from USB, try disconnecting all devices from other ports. If there is a USB input version 3 (blue), it is recommended to connect to it. If you are using a desktop computer to charge, connect to the ports located on the motherboard itself. They are usually located on the back side.
Chinese chargers from a cigarette lighter, power bank, radio and other devices will not help.
Recharging your smartphone
Some models of the Redmi and Mi line can turn off on their own when connected to the mains for a long time. This feature works to keep the device safe when charging beyond a certain time period.
In this case, the phone turns off completely for 30 minutes.
During this time, you should not press buttons, try to turn on or enter the phone in Fastboot or Recovery mode. Just wait.
Battery calibration
Sometimes there are cases when incorrect battery settings cause a failure, as a result of which the charging process slows down significantly or stops completely. In the discussion using the example of Xiaomi Mi4, the issue of the impossibility of charging for some owners was considered, as a result of which the solution to the problem was the battery calibration method:
- Completely discharge the battery, for example, by watching a video, so that the smartphone turns off on its own;
- Remove the battery and wait a while, then put it back without turning on the device;
- Connect the phone to a charger that is plugged into a socket and leave until the charge is fully restored for several hours;
- Then disconnect the network device and remove the battery again for a couple of minutes;
- Put it back in place and try turning on the phone.
At the end of these manipulations, most owners reported a significant improvement in the performance of the smartphone.
Disassembling the device
This method is described on one of the fan forums of Xiaomi owners. There are many positive reviews. But this method is unsafe.
You take full responsibility upon yourself. Your device may be out of warranty.
You need to turn on the gadget without the battery and connect the battery back in the process. If you decide to use this method, we recommend that you study the video disassembly instructions for your model.
The steps are as follows:
- The phone must be turned off;
- Unscrew the screws and remove the back cover;
- We inspect the cable (wire) connecting the battery to the motherboard. If it turns out to be disconnected (due to a fall), then we connect it. If the cable is properly connected, then carefully unclip it;
- In this form, connect the smartphone to the charger and turn it on;
- Now carefully connect the cable to the motherboard;
- Screw the lid back on and let it charge to 100%.
If this option does not work, then there is a high chance of restoring the battery using a “frog”.
Using the "frog" to restore the battery
Although the phone cannot be charged with a regular charger, the battery can be charged using a frog (clothespin) - this is a universal charger.
You carry out all actions at your own peril and risk.
To use a clothespin, follow these steps:
- Remove the battery from the gadget (if the battery is not removable, disassembling the device is highly not recommended);
- Insert it into the frog and clamp it so that the charger contacts are on the + and – terminals of the battery. If the battery has 4 contacts, usually only 2 are used.
- Connect the battery and press the TE (test) button; when the green light turns on, you have made the connection correctly.
If the green light does not turn on, the battery may be completely discharged! Then the device is connected in any polarity and plugged into the outlet for a few minutes - if the CH (charge) indicator blinks, everything is done correctly, otherwise change the polarity.
If the battery malfunctions, the charge will not proceed despite the fact that the indicator shows full capacity.
You can read more about the use of this device on specialized websites and forums.
Battery recalibration
If your battery works but doesn't reach 100% charge or takes too long to charge, recalibrating it may help. Actions are performed in accordance with the algorithm:
- wait until the charge level reaches 0%. To speed up the process, you can turn on a resource-intensive game or program;
- without turning on the phone, connect it to power and wait until it is 100% charged;
- now disconnect the phone from the charger and remove the battery again;
- After 2-3 minutes, insert the battery back and turn on the device.
Judging by user reviews, recalibration allows you to “shake up” the gadget’s settings, which resulted in slow charging or lack of charging.
In what cases is it better to contact a service center?
In these cases, it is better to immediately take the gadget to the service center for diagnostics:
- There is a burning smell from the phone;
- Smoke is observed from the smartphone;
- Charging stopped after a short circuit or power outage in the house;
- Less than 14 days have passed since the purchase (maybe this is a defect, don’t waste your time, just return the device to the seller within two weeks after purchase);
- The phone fell into the water and stopped charging;
- The battery is more than 3 years old and you have noticed a gradual decrease in the autonomy of the device.
- If the advice from the article did not help you and your case is similar to one of those listed, then it is better to contact specialists at the service center.
Cable
Many users believe that if a Xiaomi cable is outwardly intact, without noticeable deformations or breaks in the insulation, then it is in good condition. This is not always the case; quite often the defect occurs inside and outside it is absolutely invisible.
Perhaps in some place the wire was often bent and a break occurred inside, or it frayed near the jack that is connected to the charger or phone.
In a word, it doesn’t matter if the Redmi 5 cable looks good on the outside, connect another cable. If you don’t have it at hand, go to the nearest smartphone accessories store that sells them; many of them let you try the functionality without having to purchase.
If the new cable helped and the Xiaomi Mi 5 started charging, it means that the problem lay inside the cable and it needs to be replaced.

Tips for use
By following these tips you can keep your battery healthy for as long as possible:
- Do not leave the device in the open sun, the increased temperature greatly damages the battery;
- Do not carry your phone in winter where it may be exposed to freezing temperatures;
- Use the original adapter or branded adapters from well-known and trusted manufacturers;
- Try to minimize the use of fast and powerful charges;
- Try not to use energy-consuming programs when connected to a charger;
- Do not leave your phone discharged for a long time and fully charged. Ideal condition for battery 20-80% charge. Other conditions are detrimental when idle for a long time. When storing for a long time, sometimes charge the gadget.
Charger
Modern chargers are not as strong as we would like. And even though from the outside it looks like a monolithic block, inside it there are fragile components soldered onto the board that react to drops, water and even high temperatures.
If you often charged Redmi 5 during intensive use, for example, while you were playing, the charger worked for a long time, got very hot and over time this could lead to the degradation of individual components, which in one sad moment finally broke.
It is possible to diagnose a charging problem in the same way as the wires - replace it with the same one from another phone, or try to do it in a store.
If, when replacing, Redmi 5 starts charging, then the matter is resolved and you need to replace the charger.
