eSIM - what it is, how it works and why it is so important now

Over the past six months, Russia has been actively discussing the implementation of eSIM technology. There is no doubt that soon all devices will support eSIM.

Tele2 has already started connecting Russian subscribers to eSIM, cleverly bypassing Russian legislation.

However, few people know what eSIM is, how it differs from a regular SIM card, and what devices and operators support eSIM. It's time to figure this out.

What are SIM and eSIM

The first mobile phones did not have a SIM card at all. Operators programmed phones before selling them to work on the desired network. Thus, all communication information was stored on the device, and users did not have the opportunity to quickly change the number and operator.

The concept of SIM card appeared in 1991 after the adoption of the corresponding standard. It was from this moment that phones began to have a connector for installing a SIM card.

What is a SIM card: it is a piece of plastic on which a microcircuit is applied. Over the years, only its size decreased, but the principle of operation remained the same.

SIM card sizes from left to right: miniSIM, microSIM, nanoSIM and eSIM chip.

What is an eSIM: this is a chip built into the gadget that emulates a SIM card. The phrase stands for embedded-SIM, that is, “built-in SIM card”.

With eSIM, operators no longer need to sell physical SIM cards. Instead, they sell a set of encrypted data that the customer enters on their device.

Technology safety

We can immediately say that eSim will be safer than regular SIM cards. First, you can't lose your chip without separating it from your smartphone. It's the same with theft. You can set a password on your phone or even block it remotely. You can’t do this quickly with SIM cards. Anyone can insert a lost card into their phone without any blocking options. At the same time, he will be able to use your Internet package, call from your number and pay with funds. After that you will also be shown the score.

Speaking about the loss of a smartphone, it is worth talking about protecting the eSim chip itself. You can put a password on it, and it can also be blocked remotely. Well, he himself can endlessly send geodata, that is, you can find your smartphone without any problems, and the criminal will get what he deserves. Some operator applications allow you to create a personal profile on your account, which will be attached to the eSim chip, which will add additional problems.

As for “data interception,” this does not exist and has never happened with regular SIM cards.

In general, the technology has no security problems.

Evolution of SIM cards

Why eSIM is better than a regular SIM card

With eSIM, smartphone manufacturers do not have to design a SIM card slot, which takes up additional space. And if in phones this problem is insignificant due to the large size of the device, then in small gadgets free space is worth its weight in gold.

Since eSIM is just a set of data , users have the opportunity to quickly change SIM card and operator. You don't need to go to the store for this. Everything can be done online.

In the phone settings you just need to change the profile. This opportunity will be primarily appreciated by travelers.

In theory, multiple virtual SIM cards can be used on a device at the same time. However, for this, the smartphone must have more than one radio module.

ESim in Russia

What is happening in our region if we hear so little news about this technology? Absolutely nothing (until 2022). Sadly, eSim was banned until recently. In addition, small companies still cannot register properly, because large operators simply do not want this. All this is due to the fact that eSim simply does not allow you to register a specific user. This works great with regular SIM cards. All this goes under Articles 272 and 273 of the Criminal Code.

What now? The first major operator to use eSim was Tele 2. Almost all other well-known companies also followed suit.

Tele 2 was the first among large domestic operators to introduce eSim

Before this, we were ruled by such international companies as Truehone and GigSky. They bypass the blocking like non-Russian operators. In particular, GigSky began selling its eSim-related services with us back in 2015, so there is nothing surprising about this. Moreover, everything is legal, so you don’t have to worry about further problems. There is only one “but”: the operator’s prices are worse than ours in roaming.

The advantage of such a connection is that you will be able to use the Internet even in Europe, without losing money, time, traffic, and without having to deal with lengthy paperwork. All you need is the official application. You just need to change the region.

The downside will be the price in dollars and euros. Because of the exchange rate, you can pay 650 rubles for one month, and all 700 for the next.

Which iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch support eSIM

As often happens, eSIM began to be actively discussed after Apple introduced this technology into its devices. eSIM is currently supported by some Apple Watch, iPhone and iPad models.

iPhone:

■ iPhone XS ■ iPhone XS Max ■ iPhone XR

iPad:

■ iPad Pro 11 inches (2018) ■ iPad Pro 12.9 inches (2018) ■ iPad Air 3rd generation (2019) ■ iPad mini 5 (2019)

Apple Watch:

■ Series 3 ■ Series 4

In addition to eSIM, Apple also has its own SIM card. Apple SIM was introduced in 2014.

With Apple SIM, the user can change the operator and tariff at any time without having to replace the SIM card itself. Russian operators do not support Apple SIM.

The difference between a chip and a regular card

The described communication elements have a similar principle of operation, but in some technical aspects differences can be noticed. What are they:

  1. Occupied space. In this case, the advantage is on the e-SIM side, since its dimensions allow the chip to be installed even in a wrist device. It is also not necessary to have an additional slot, which saves even more space. As for devices with a regular SIM card, it requires a lot of space to install it, especially if the phone is designed for two communication elements.
  2. Appearance. At a time when the usual SIM card has quite large dimensions, which are characterized by an excess of plastic around the main chip, the described microcircuit looks like a miniature plate with contacts.
  3. Unlimited use. If a regular card needs to be programmed for a specific mobile operator, e-SIM can work with any communication provider without technical intervention. It is also worth noting that the number of transitions to other operators is unlimited.

How to use eSIM on a dual-SIM iPhone

iPhone XS, XS Max and XR support two SIM cards, one of which is an eSIM.

To set up eSIM, you need to scan the QR code, or download the operator’s application, which provides the ability to connect eSIM, or enter the data manually.

A virtual SIM card can act as the main one or be used as an additional one.

In iPhone settings you can also configure which number to use for each subscriber and which SIM card will be used for the Internet.

Advantages of built-in eSIM cards

The new technology has a lot of advantages, due to which, by the way, it is perceived as a threat by some Russian operators. In general, among the main advantages of using built-in cards are the following:

  • The number of cellular operators will increase, since from now on the manufacturers themselves will be able to act as virtual operators, providing services directly to their users;
  • Quick registration using the device;
  • The ability to control smart equipment, a car, a smart home using a SIM card;
  • Reduced roaming costs, simplicity and transparency of its use;
  • Reducing prices for communication services due to increased competition in this service segment.

Which Russian operators support eSIM

According to current Russian legislation, using an eSIM is considered copying a SIM card . In Russia, such a procedure is prohibited, therefore operators cannot fully switch to eSIM.

However, some find various loopholes. For example, Tele2 offers to buy a regular SIM card along with a QR code. After entering the QR code, the physical SIM card is disabled, and the user has a virtual mobile number.

eSIM technology is currently being tested by the operator Drimsim. To be the first to try the new technology, you need to send a request by email. In response, you will receive a letter with information on setting up eSIM.

MegaFon, Beeline, MTS and other virtual operators do not yet offer eSIM in any form.

Unlike Russian companies, many European and American operators support eSIM. A list of all operators is on the Apple website.

Chip operating principle

Once integrated into the mobile phone system, the chip allows you to change the cellular operator at any time and this does not require reinstalling the card. The development of the technology began in 2012, when the GSM company decided to create a chip capable of backing up data over a remote distance. To use the function, you do not need to have a smartphone with a SIM card slot.

Installation proceeds as follows. The chip is soldered to the contact boards, after which it will not be possible to replace the element yourself. A subscriber can change mobile operator at any time, but it is not necessary to purchase a new chip. The services of the connected communication provider will be automatically linked to the chip, and the tariff plan and other loyalty programs will be set up automatically. Activation of the services of the embedded chip occurs as follows:

  1. The subscriber is required to enter into a special agreement with the company providing the SIM card and included services.
  2. Company employees issue the necessary data packages in the form of a QR code, scanning of which activates the chip.
  3. The user must scan the received code from his mobile phone.
  4. After the procedure, the chip will automatically transmit information to the special development department of the GSM company.
  5. Next, the card will contain automatic communication settings that will independently create all the necessary accounts.
  6. Ultimately, the mobile gadget will be activated, after which communication services will become available.

Attention! When a user changes mobile operator, the e- SIM number remains the same. This also applies to cases when the mobile device changes. You can transfer your old number to another phone at any time.

How to activate e-SIM on a mobile device

After concluding an agreement and receiving the required QR code, you can begin to activate the microcircuit. The process is quite simple as there are a few steps required. The method will be discussed using the example of iPhone 11. What manipulations need to be carried out:

  1. Open basic phone settings.
  2. Find the cellular communications section.
  3. Click on the button to add a cellular tariff.
  4. Scan the received QR code.
  5. Select a name for both cards.
  6. By default, enter a phone number.
  7. Select a number for FaceTime and iMessage services.
  8. Specify the number for data transfer.

Attention! In the last section, you can set automatic switching, since at times the connection to the e- SIM may be lost.

How to connect

Prepaid subscribers can order eSIM online. Some Ukrainian operators ask customers using a contract to provide their passport data to change the type of SIM card. Therefore, it is possible that you will still have to visit the office.

Using eSIM, you can replace an existing old-style card or order a new phone number. Before making a replacement, you need to transfer all contacts from the card, because there is no automatic transfer of contacts to the eSIM.

Connection steps

The eSIM connection algorithm is approximately the same for different telecommunications service providers.

  1. Make sure that the device is certified and not brought into Ukraine illegally.
  2. Find out if there is a chip for eSIM in it.
  3. Select a cellular network operator and pay for the eSIM purchase.
  4. Copy all necessary contacts before changing the card.
  5. Connect to Wi-Fi and add a new network by scanning the QR code from the letter from the operator.

There are applications where you can order a SIM card from any country. This innovation will be convenient when packing for a trip. The tariffs and cost of such a card are immediately indicated there. This eliminates unnecessary problems with finding a mobile operator abroad. The card does not require internet to operate normally. It may only be needed upon first activation.

Often the code comes directly to the phone, in which case you can configure the network manually. Or take a screenshot and scan the QR from another device to simplify the connection process.

Benefits of e-SIM technology

In foreign countries, many users have long switched to this microchip. However, most phones remain functional with the old cards, since you can switch from advanced technology to familiar technology at any time. As a rule, such actions are carried out if the connection to the e-SIM is lost. What features can e-SIM offer:

  1. Minimum costs. After purchasing a mobile device, there is no need to waste money on purchasing a SIM card. The savings lie in the fact that the digital card fully pays for the money spent. The protection from dust and moisture of some internal elements of the phone is also improved.
  2. Connection to little-known operators. In addition to connecting to world-famous mobile operators, most of which offer their own services for a huge price, you can connect to any little-known network. In many countries, there are specialists who independently develop their own networks at reasonable prices, and this is where e-SIM will be most useful.
  3. Versatility. In earlier versions of smartwatches, which included a SIM card, the design was quite bulky. This was due to the need to introduce appropriate card slots. In the case of the described element, things are much simpler. e-Sim takes up little space, so future gadgets will have a smaller design.

Who provides the service

Initially, operators provided replacement of an existing SIM card with an eSIM only for subscribers with prepaid tariffs. In 2022, it became possible to connect to the contract. The first operator in Ukraine to use eSIM was 3Mob. Now most of the leading operators in Ukraine provide this opportunity.

Kyivstar

Kyivstar is one of the few that transfers its subscribers to new eSIM for free. The company offers to replace your existing card with an eSIM, or get a new phone number. But the official website states that technical work is currently underway and prepaid subscribers will be able to connect after October 10, 2022. Contract subscribers can use the web version of My Kyivstar or contact the office to receive a QR code.

Prepaid subscribers after the specified dates can make the transition through the My Kyivstar application. A prerequisite is to pre-pay the invoice at the rate for 4 weeks.

Vodafone

Vodafone eSIM only works on phones officially registered in Ukraine; problems will arise with “gray” ones. Prepaid subscribers can buy a new card with the SuperNet Pro tariff, which can be replaced with another after activation.

Contract users will also have to go to a Vodafone store after purchasing an eSIM with a passport and TIN.

Corporate clients can also use the service by submitting documents to the Vodafone office or service manager.

The cost of eSIM to replace an existing number is 100 UAH.

ESIM with a new number and tariff - 150 UAH (the same amount of money will be in the account after activation).

lifecell

The operator offers eSIM subscribers with the ability to choose any tariff. Cost - 150 UAH, on the bonus account 150 UAH. After purchase, a file with a QR code is sent to your email. You can purchase it in the online store or in the Easy Pay terminal.

3Mob

This is the first operator in Ukraine that began to provide eSIM to its subscribers. A new card can be ordered on the operator’s website for 250 UAH. In this case, all outstanding debts for the current and previous month must be repaid.

Flaws

Transferring an eSIM to another device is more difficult than moving a SIM card.

Most mobile operators allow you to use the same QR code for card activation no more than 2 times.

Only one eSIM can work.

If calls are made to the SIM card and to the eSIM at the same time, then it ceases to be active and does not work on the second line. Then the subscriber receives a message about a missed call.

Saved contacts on the SIM card are not automatically transferred to the eSIM.
