Redmi Airdots S review: how are they different from its predecessor?

A few days ago, Xiaomi quietly released a new version of its budget headphones - Redmi AirDots S. I think you know that the previous headphones - Redmi AirDots - were very popular because they had excellent characteristics and an affordable price - only $14.

The new Redmi AirDots S headphones have even better characteristics, but the price remains the same.

So, if you don’t have wireless headphones yet, then you should definitely buy new headphones - AirDots S. But is it worth buying the new generation if you already have the previous version - Redmi AirDots? Let's talk about the main improvements of the new TWS headphones from Xiaomi.

Design

Unlike the myriad of Airpods clones, Redmi Earbuds S look their own. This design fits much more tightly in the ears than the semi-open plastic Apple Airpods. The appearance is no different from the version without the S prefix.

The headphones are made of matte black plastic, which makes them easier to clean than other glossy options on the market. In addition, the rounded rectangular design fits perfectly into the ear without drooping.

Each weighs 4 grams, which means you can leave the Airdots S on for several hours of listening without getting tired. There is an LED on the case that lights up red while charging and blinks white when pairing.

Redmi Earbuds S are light enough to listen to music for a long time without feeling any discomfort in your ears.

Xiaomi includes 3 pairs of silicone pads in the package. The standard medium size suited me. However, the seal is not perfect. I recommend using foam pads that hold their shape. It would be nice to see them included in the kit, but they are not there.

Xiaomi Redmi Earbuds S uses physical buttons to control it. A press pauses the track, a double press calls up the voice assistant, and a long press turns them off.

Differences between Redmi Airdots S and Redmi Airdots

Xiaomi Redmi Airdots S is not the second generation of headphones. They got a couple of minor improvements in total. Size, color, sound quality remain the same. There are only two differences:

  1. A different pairing mechanism is used . Previously, the left earphone was connected to the right, and the right to the phone. Now they both connect directly to the phone, which has speeded up the pairing process a little.
  2. Added latency reduction feature . More details about it later in the article. In short, it's useless.

Officially, the new version has become cheaper than the original, in practice the price in online stores is no different, so I advise you to purchase Xiaomi Redmi Airdots S.

Redmi AirDots S: Price and buy

The price of Redmi AirDot S is only $14.

Should you buy new headphones? My opinion is this: If you already have Redmi Airdots, I don't think you need to buy Redmi AirDots S because they have the same design, sound quality and battery life as Redmi AirDots.

The only difference is the ability to use each earphone separately.

But, if you are choosing between Redmi AirDots and Redmi AirDots S, then you should definitely choose the new model. The price is the same, but you can use the left or right earbud separately.

Operating experience

I would like to note the excellent communication. Wireless headphones work great over relatively long distances and even through walls. You can leave your phone on the sofa and move around the entire apartment - the sound will not disappear.

Their connection is excellent; you can listen to music throughout the apartment, leaving the phone on the sofa.

Redmi Earbuds S has added a new feature - a gaming mode with reduced audio latency. It turns on with a triple click and reduces sound delay. To be honest, I didn’t experience any delays without this mode (or they were so small that I didn’t notice them), so I doubt the usefulness of this function.

Water protection

Lastly, the headphones are rated IPX4, which means they are resistant to sweat and direct splashes. I had a case where one of the headphones fell into the sink right under the running water. A couple of seconds passed before I took them out, he still continued to play, although the sound had become noticeably quieter.

After drying, the volume level leveled off. Redmi Airdots S sound exactly the same as before the sink incident. The quality of communication has not changed.

Charging case

The charging case is small enough to easily fit in your pocket. However, it is not flat, its thickness is enough for you to feel the presence of wireless headphones in your pants. The lid of the case is held in place by a magnet, just like the headphones themselves inside it.

When will everyone switch to USB Type-C?

I don't like how little the headphones stick out from the case; sometimes it can be difficult to get them out, especially in hot weather when your hands are sweaty and slimy.

The only real compromise is the microUSB charging port. All my gadgets besides these headphones are charged via USB Type-C. Every time I don’t get into the connector with the right side, I quickly lose nerve cells.
