How to enable different types of microphone on a computer and laptop

Types of microphones that can be connected to a computer

Before connecting the device, you need to decide on its type. This will determine what work you have to do:

  1. The standard headset microphone is pre-configured so you don't have to make any additional settings. How well it will work depends on the quality of the headset. If there are no problems with the operating system, it will install automatically.
  2. Dynamic is used for recording in quiet rooms. In an ordinary apartment, it will only pick up noise. It should only be installed in studios and carefully configured. After connecting, downloading drivers is required. They usually come with a microphone on a small optical disk.

Based on the type of installation, devices can be divided into standard and wireless. The latter are a little more difficult to connect, but they work no worse than regular ones. First, let's figure out how to connect a microphone to a computer, if it is a regular one.

Methods for connecting a microphone depending on its type

Today, the following companies are engaged in the production of microphones, and other peripheral devices: Defender, Dexp, Maono, Panasonic, Ritmix, Sven, etc. The models produced differ not only in characteristics, but also in the principle of connection to a PC or laptop. Some are equipped with a wire that is plugged into a special socket (microphone input) on the back of the system unit, others are without cables at all, operating “over the air” using Bluetooth technology. And they connect in different ways.

In addition, there are two types of devices:

  • classic headsets (for example, budget Aceline AMIC). At the same time, there are hand, head and lapel (small sizes). There is no need to configure them, since this has already been done by the manufacturer - just insert them into the desired connector. And the better the quality of the headset, the better it will work. The user does not need to enable or install anything - everything is done automatically (provided the operating system is operating normally);
  • dynamic, used for recording in quiet rooms. These are studio models that are not suitable for an apartment room, as they will only “catch” noise. They work with them in studios, and only after careful adjustment. Inserting them into the connector is not enough - you need drivers (software), usually included on the included CD.

Based on the type of installation, microphones are divided into regular and wireless. The second ones are not inferior in performance to the classic ones, but require activation through the settings of the computer or laptop.

How to check if the microphone is turned on on a laptop and PC

Not every person knows how to check the operation of the device. The easiest way is to call a friend via messenger and ask him to evaluate whether you can hear you normally. But this method is not suitable for everyone.

If you can't contact anyone, do the following:

  • Go to your control panel.
  • Find the "Sound" category.
  • Click on “Record”.
  • Find your headset in the list.
  • Say something.
  • Check to see if the opposite indicator fluctuates.

Another way is to turn on the recording program and talk. It is located along the path “Start - All Programs - Accessories”.

If the microphone doesn't work

The check showed that the device is not functioning. First you need to restart the OBS program . If additional changes have been made that could affect the microphone's performance, the user will be able to see this by looking at the application statistics .

If all OBS microphone settings remain the same, you need to uninstall the program and its new version. Another way is to reinstall the driver for audio devices . If none of the above options help , the problem is in the microphone itself .

Automatic problem solving

Since the microphone problem is quite common, Windows 10 has a built-in tool to solve it. To use it, go to your control panel and follow these steps:

  1. Go to the "Troubleshooting" block. If you can't find it, use the built-in search bar located in the upper right corner.

    Open the “Troubleshooting” section

  2. Start troubleshooting audio problems.

    Click on the “Troubleshoot audio recording” button

  3. The program window will open. Confirm the action and start following the instructions provided by the application. After the diagnostics are completed, you will receive a message indicating whether the system was able to identify and resolve the problems.

    We confirm the start of diagnostics

To connect a microphone to a computer or laptop, just connect the wire. After synchronization, you can configure the microphone using the tools built into Windows or third-party programs. You can eliminate noise by lowering the sensitivity. If your computer won't work with the microphone, check for drivers, disable Monopoly, or use an automatic troubleshooter.

Connecting a jack microphone

Some devices use a plug connector, similar to the ones you use on a cell phone. On a computer, the socket is located on the back of the system unit.

If the microphone was not found automatically?

If the system cannot independently detect your device and install drivers for its full operation, you may need to download and download drivers from the Internet.

How to tell if a microphone has been found

To do this, you should enter the control panel of the Windows operating system (search for “Control Panel” ). In the " Settings " , select " Hardware and Sound " . Next, click “Sound” and the sound settings will open.

In the Settings , click on the Recording to find available devices. Here you can check for yourself whether the microphone is working in the “Recording” .

You can find and install the device in this list, then click on “Properties” to change the settings (volume value for recording).

If when you connect a microphone you hear yourself in the headphones, then this can be fixed !

Well, that's all for today! Please write in the comments if you liked this article! And were you able to connect and configure the microphone?

You may need to connect a separate microphone for a laptop or computer running Windows for a variety of reasons: the user wants to find a song by sound, arrange a karaoke session, does not have the ability to increase the volume of the built-in device, and so on. The installation and configuration process is simple and does not take much time. Let's try to figure out how to turn on the microphone correctly.

Via standard or headset jack

To connect a microphone with a 2.5 or 6.35 mm plug to the input (pink connector), appropriate adapters are used. They can be bought in a store that sells musical instruments, computer components, car audio, etc. or order via the Internet, including from China or Moscow. The price starts from 80-100 rubles.

To connect headphones and a microphone to the universal headset input (the only one on a laptop, indicated by a headphone icon), you will need an adapter (it differs from the headphone connector by an increased number of rings).

The adapter's output is connected to the headset jack, and headphones or speakers and a microphone are connected to the inputs. Then, in HD Manager, change the interface purpose to “Headset” so that Windows recognizes both the speaker and headphones.

Remember: if the connector serves only as an output, connecting a microphone to it is useless. In such a situation, a speaker with a USB interface, an external sound card or a combined device will help.

Checking the sound quality in Skype

In this program, specifically for these purposes, there is a service for checking sound from a microphone “Echo/Sound Test Service”. After the first launch of the application, it will definitely appear in the contact list. To check how well your interlocutors can hear you, call this contact. During the call, the answering machine will give additional instructions and a signal will sound, after which you can say anything into the microphone (the main thing is to speak), then a second signal will sound and you can listen to the recording of your voice and evaluate the sound quality. If everything is in order, you can enjoy voice communication over the Internet. If you are interested, you can read the article on how to record a conversation on Skype.

If your friends, acquaintances and colleagues are very hard to hear on Skype, then be sure to share the link to this article via social networks, and they too will be able to solve this problem.

Using a wireless microphone

If you don’t want to bother with adapters and wires, buy a wireless microphone that connects via Bluetooth.

  1. Charge the device or insert batteries.
  2. Turn on the radio microphone and Bluetooth on your laptop. To do this, use the key combination Fn + F.
  3. Right-click to open the context menu of the Bluetooth icon in the tray (where the clock is) and select “Add device...”.

Windows 10 provides an alternative path: hold down Win + I, visit the “Devices” section and activate Bluetooth in the window.

  • Click "Add Bluetooth or...".
  • Specify the device type.

  • After scanning and detecting the microphone, select it from the list.

If successful, a message will appear indicating that the wireless speaker is ready.
If Bluetooth does not turn on (the switch is not active) or the interface icon is missing in the tray, check whether the RF transceiver driver is installed and whether the module itself is activated on the laptop and microphone.

  1. Using the Win + I menu, open Device Manager.
  2. Expand the "Bluetooth" section to make sure the driver is there.

If there is no such item in the list or there is a yellow icon next to it, reinstall the Bluetooth software from the laptop installation disk or from the PC support site.

Suddenly, a gray arrow pointing down is drawn on the radio module icon, right-click on it and select “Enable device”.

The following steps will also help return the icon to the tray:

  • Hold Win + R and run the command “ncpa.cpl”.

  • Bring up the Bluetooth connection properties.

  • In the second tab, click on the “Options...” link.
  • Select the "Show Bluetooth icon in notification area" checkbox.
  • Save the changes with the “OK” button.

The microphone will work.

How to set up headphones and microphone for Skype

Open the Skype program. Revealing

.

On the left we select

.

In the Microphone section, select all devices one by one from the drop-down list. In this case, it is advisable to say something. When you have selected the desired microphone, the bar in the Volume section will display the input signal level in green. She will change.

Leave this microphone. Leave the Allow automatic microphone setup checkbox.

We do the same with speakers. We select one by one from the drop-down list and check by clicking on the green button to the right of this drop-down list. If the volume level is reflected in the Volume field and you hear the ringtone in Skype, then you have chosen the right headphones or speakers. Leave the Automatic speaker setup checkbox in place.

Click Save at the bottom of the window.

. We find him in our contacts and call him.

We continue to do whatever the robot says. After the call, it will be clear whether you have configured the microphone with headphones for Skype correctly.

What if the settings are lost?

It happens that the system sees the microphone, but still cannot hear you. Then you should check the signal settings. To do this, go to Start → Settings → System → Sound again. Below the list of connected microphones there is a scale (Check microphone) - it turns blue if the microphone picks up sound.

Speak loudly and then quietly, and watch the scale. If during a loud conversation the shading does not even reach half, click on Device Properties and try increasing the volume. Yes, in Windows 10 the sensitivity is called master volume.

Setting up a microphone on a PC using special programs

How to set up a microphone on a Windows computer as a professional? If you are going to get into professional audio recording, it is better to turn to branded and recognized programs. They allow you to configure the microphone with greater precision and offer an expanded list of headset settings:

  • Audacity . Ability to record multiple audio tracks at once, trim, speed up and slow down sound.
  • Free MP3 Sound Recorder . A simple and functional program that allows you to configure audio characteristics such as bitrate, frequency, channel and quality level.
  • Sound Forge . Professional sound editor for advanced users.

Correct connection to the computer

If we are talking about a desktop computer, then you must connect an external device to the appropriate connector. You can use headphones with a microphone, a webcam with a microphone, or a separate device, for example, for karaoke or recording podcasts. Also, all microphones are divided into connection methods: via a 3.5 mm jack or via a USB port.

If a USB microphone can be plugged into any corresponding connector, then it should not be confused with 3.5 mm, otherwise the device will not be detected in Windows. To do this, find the connector marked as a microphone. Most often, these ports are marked in pink, as shown in the picture below. Also, desktop computers have a similar connector not only on the motherboard, but also on the front panel.

Now you need to configure it on your computer using the standard tools of the Windows 7 operating system.

Connecting a microphone for Windows 10

Some beginners who have never used a microphone before may have difficulty connecting it. The difficulty is that the microphone connector in the system unit coincides with the connector for speakers and other audio headsets. But despite the same shape, the functions of these connectors are very different. If you connect a microphone to the speaker jack and speakers to the microphone jack, neither the speakers nor the microphone will work.

To properly connect the microphone to your computer, follow these steps:

Step 1. Locate the microphone jack on the back of the system unit.

For the record! It is important not to confuse this with the speaker jack. The color difference is that the microphone jack is pink, while the jack for speakers and other audio devices is green.

Find the microphone connector on the back of the system unit
Sometimes these connectors may be located on the front panel of the system unit (at the bottom where USB ports are usually located), but this is not always the case.

The connectors are located on the front panel of the system unit.

Step 2. Insert the microphone plug into the pink jack. On new computers, in addition to the color, the logo of the corresponding device is displayed (in this case, you will see the microphone logo).

Insert the microphone plug into the pink jack

Microphone connected

Step 3: Verify that the connection was successful. To do this, find the sound icon on the taskbar and right-click on it.

Find the sound icon in the system tray and right-click on it.

Step four. Select the "Recorders" menu. .

Select the Voice Recorders menu.

Step 5: Review the list of devices to find your microphone. If it appears there, you have connected it correctly.

Browse the list of devices, if there is an icon with the name of our microphone, it means the connection is established correctly

Driver check

First you need to make sure that the microphone is working properly and is detected by the system. The first sign that the device is recognized by the computer is the corresponding sound when plugged into the connector. However, this is not a guarantee that the system was able to correctly install the driver and configure it. To check this, do this:

  • Right-click on the “Computer” icon and select “Properties” from the menu.

  • Now go to the “Device Manager” section.

  • We expand the subsection “Sound, video and gaming devices”. A list of sound devices that are detected by the system is displayed here. In most cases, these are High Definition Audio, Realtek and similar solutions. There should be no yellow exclamation marks near the icons.

We also advise you to pay attention to whether the Device Manager sees unidentified devices. It is quite possible that one of these is an external microphone with a built-in audio card, especially if we are talking about a USB connection.

If you have lost the “Computer” shortcut from your desktop, then you can open “Device Manager” in a different way. To do this, go to the Start menu and write the name of the application in the search bar:

To check whether the driver is installed correctly on your audio device, you need to follow these steps:

  • In the same window, right-click on the device to open an additional window. The “General” tab displays the current state of Windows 7. If you see the inscription from the screenshot, then everything is fine with the driver.

  • In the “Driver” tab, if you click on the “Update” button, a utility will launch to search for new driver versions.

  • You can trust the search to your computer or specify the path to the file manually if you downloaded it in advance.

  • After completing the procedure, close the window with the marked button.

After any actions with drivers, you must constantly restart your computer - remember this rule!

If we are talking about the built-in microphone in a laptop with a licensed OS, then the driver must be installed by default before purchasing the device. Otherwise, you will have to download proprietary programs from the laptop manufacturer's website. The microphone is connected, the driver is installed, the device is detected by the computer correctly - now we move on to configuration using standard Windows 7 tools.

How to enable microphone in Windows 10 on computer

Windows 10 users very often encounter difficulties when recording audio or unexpected “loss” of the microphone. Before you begin setting up a device, it is strongly recommended to check its presence in the system. To properly connect the device, the user must proceed in the following order:

  • Insert the plug into the appropriate slot, then right-click the Windows flag in the lower left corner of the screen and select Device Manager from the list that appears.

  • Expand the "Audio Inputs" and "Audio Outputs" submenus.

  • And find your device in the list.
  • If problems occur, the user can update the driver by right-clicking on the microphone header.
  • And if this does not help, remove the device, and then, after updating the hardware configuration, add it back to the list; as a rule, this is enough to normalize the microphone under Windows 10 - only if the problem is not in the device itself.

  • You can quickly adjust the volume of an input recording by typing "Sound" in the Search box and selecting "Sound Mixer Settings" from the output list.

  • In the window that opens, the user must first select the desired device from the drop-down list, and then, by moving the slider, adjust the volume level.

  • To access additional settings, use the same “search” to find “Control Panel.”
  • Go to the "Sound" section.
  • And on the already familiar “Recordings” tab, select the desired device and open “Properties”.

  • Here, in the Levels tab, the user can adjust the volume of the input signal, as well as set additional gain.

  • And to avoid wheezing and hissing, turn off additional effects in the “Enhancements” tab.

Also in Properties you can temporarily disable audio recording from the microphone, set the device as the main one, etc. — how to do this was described in the section on setting up under Windows 7.

Turn on the microphone in the Sound panel

The first thing you need to do is activate the device on the Soundbar.

Follow these steps:

  1. In the search bar, type “Control Panel” and navigate to the application;
  2. Change the sorting to “Large Icons” (as shown in the screenshot);
  3. Open the Sound panel and go to the Recording tab;
  4. On the empty area, right-click (we'll use the acronym PKM in this article) and make sure the "Show disabled devices" and "Show disabled devices" options are selected;
  5. Find your microphone, click on it using PCM and check the Enable box.

If it was already in the list before and/or the Enable checkbox, then the problem is most likely in the driver.

Checking the microphone driver

To eliminate problems caused by incorrect driver operation or an outdated version, you need to update it.

To do this, follow this algorithm:

  1. In the search bar, enter “Device Manager” and open it;
  2. Click the arrow next to the Audio Inputs and Outputs section to expand the list of devices;
  3. Right-click your device name, then Update Driver;
  4. It is also worth trying to roll back the driver to an earlier version. Since Windows automatically updates them to the latest versions, it makes sense to try manually downgrading to the old one - it may have better compatibility with your device and operating system.

After updating a driver or downgrading to a previous version, be sure to restart your computer.

Setting your privacy options

If devices are turned on and drivers are working correctly, the problem may be with your operating system's privacy settings. To enable the microphone in Windows 10, follow these steps:

  1. Open Windows Settings via the Start menu or use the WIN + I key combination;
  2. In the “Privacy” section, find the “Microphone” entry;
  3. Grant your microphone access to the software it needs, and set access permissions for desktop apps.

You can ban apps where you don't intend to use the microphone and limit yourself to the ones you need. However, to be on the safe side, it is recommended to set “On” everywhere.

What to do if the sound when recording or talking is very quiet

You can adjust the microphone sound volume using system tools in Windows 7, Windows 10. To do this, you need to go to the recording device settings window, as shown above. Here you just need to select the name of the model you are using with the left mouse button and click the Properties button. It is located in the lower right corner of the window.

In the device properties, sensitivity levels are adjusted on the tab of the same name. Having switched to it, you should use the slider to set the acceptable sound volume. To save the settings, just click OK and close the settings window.

Connecting a microphone to a laptop is sometimes very difficult. We are talking about old devices - their connector does not meet modern standards. Therefore, to use a very old microphone, you cannot do without qualified assistance. The device must be taken to a workshop or electronics specialist to re-solder the wires to a modern interface. Only after this can you connect the microphone to the laptop using one of the methods described above.

USB connection

A convenient and modern connection method that is supported by almost all motherboards.

Find an available USB port on the system unit and plug your device into it.

Microphone with USB connector

The PC must independently find drivers for the microphone to work. After the drivers are installed , you can check if your microphone is working by going to the sound settings window.

Settings in communication programs “Skype” and “Discord”

Most applications for communicating over the Internet have a separate section with settings that does not depend on system parameters. For example, we will look at the setup procedure in Skype and Discord.

Skype

We will talk about the most recent version of Skype. If this update is not available to you, you can still use the instructions - the approximate location of the sections and names remains the same:

  1. We go to settings through the additional menu.

2. Here open “Sound and Video”, select the device to record and adjust the volume level.

3. To test the sound, click on “Make a free test call” at the bottom of the window.

During the call, you will be connected to an answering machine that will record up to 10 seconds of your speech. It will then play the recording so you can listen to it. This will allow you to understand how your voice will sound when talking online.

Discord

This application is newer than Skype, but is already very popular among gamers due to its functionality. For the microphone to work properly with it, do the following:

  1. Open the section using the gear.

2. Go to the “Voice and Video” tab. Here you can select I/O devices (1). Below you can adjust the volume sliders (2). To listen to your voice, you need to click on the “Let's Check” button (3). You will hear a slight delay - this is normal. After listening to the voice, make adjustments to the volume level.

3. If the voice sounds too quiet, try turning off automatic sensitivity detection and setting the slider to maximum.

Additionally, you can assign a hotkey and mute the microphone if necessary.

We reviewed only two current programs. If you use another application, then most likely its settings are very similar to these instructions.

How to check if the connection is correct

If you follow the instructions, and when the equipment is in working order, notifications on the screen will indicate the fact of connection. You can also check through Device Manager. There, in the “Audio Outputs” or “Sound Devices” tab, the connected device should appear.

If everything is in order with the physical installation, check the functionality:

  1. Click “Start” – “Control Panel” – “Hardware” – “Sound”.

  1. Go to the “Record” tab.
  2. The connected model will be displayed. If everything is normal with the drivers, there will be a green arrow on the left indicating an active connection.

  1. They say something into the microphone - if the scale fills up, then everything is working.

If the scale remains in place, this indicates a hardware malfunction or a weak signal. How to improve communication:

  1. Open the “Recording” tab, select the device with the mouse, and click “Properties”.
  2. Go to the “Levels” tab, where you adjust the volume and gain (recommended value is 20 dB).
  3. To save the changes, click “Ok”.

You can check your equipment using special sound recording programs, and even in Skype by going to the settings, “Sound and Video” tab.

Connecting a studio microphone

A professional microphone requires additional external equipment, such as a high-quality microphone amplifier with a USB interface. It bypasses the built-in sound card.

An external audio interface can do the job if you are using a capacitor device that requires phantom power.

Audio equipment for professional musicians is expensive, so an alternative option is to purchase a high-quality USB microphone that is suitable for streaming on video hosting sites, hosting podcasts or online work conferences. They do not require line connectors or preamplifiers to operate.

The adapter must match the sound card when connected via a line input. Choose devices that can raise the sound level to a level that suits the built-in audio interface.

The first stage is preparatory. Let's consider two types of 3.5mm connector: combined and “separate”

There are
two types of audio connectors ( 3.5mm ): combined and “separate” (standard).
You can read more about the differences between them here: separate, combined. If you are using USB headphones and a microphone, connect them to any working port (preferably version 2.0 - gray) and immediately proceed to setup.

First you need to determine where to insert the devices. To do this, we need to understand what type of equipment we are dealing with. Let's take three configurations of audio equipment, which we will subsequently focus on:

  • Headphones and microphone are one device , the wire contains two plugs (usually red and green). On the “jack” itself there is a pair of contact pads (circular strips) for the left and right ears, respectively;
  • Headphones and microphone are also one device . It differs from the equipment from the first point by the presence of only a single plug. However, on the “jack” there are three contact “strips” for the left and right ears, as well as for powering the microphone. Typically, this connection scheme is used in mobile headsets ;
  • A microphone and headphones are two separate devices that exist independently without each other (as in the first case, there are only two contacts).

Please note: regular speakers of 2.0 and 2.1 (a subwoofer is added) are connected to the same connector as the headphones. 5.1 speakers generally involve installation via a standard 3.5mm jack and so-called “tulips” (RCA). To do this, you need a special sound card with 5.1 support . “Live” examples of each of the points are shown below.

Figure 1. Three types of audio devices.
Next, we will look at connecting each of the listed configurations depending on the available audio outputs on your computer or laptop. ↑ Return

1.1.

What do separate audio outputs look like?

The first picture shows
the usual “Jack” connectors (typical for computers with built-in and external sound cards).

Figure 2. Separate jack connectors. The structure of the connectors itself may be slightly different, this is not so important. The main feature of separate audio outputs is a separate connection for headphones and a microphone (red and green ports, respectively). Let's consider the installation of various equipment (configurations).

  • The headphone plugs with microphone are connected to the corresponding connectors on your motherboard/case/laptop;
  • Combined devices (headset) are connected only through a special adapter. Otherwise, the microphone simply will not work;
  • Individual devices: “red port” – microphone, “green port” – headphones.

With the right approach, the equipment will work. Now you can proceed directly to setting up the sound.
To do this, go to the chapter “Setting up headphones and microphone on Windows”. ↑ Return

1.2.

What does a combined audio output look like?

The second picture shows
a combined or “combined” audio output connector (typical of most inexpensive/thin modern laptops).

Figure 3. Combined audio output in a laptop.
Please note that this type of connector is not common. You can connect a microphone and headphones separately or combined devices (for example, a mobile headset) to this audio output. The connection principle - in comparison with the first type of audio output - has changed slightly (consider our configurations ):

  • Equipment with two plugs is now connected via a special adapter. Otherwise, you can “force” only one of the two parts of the device to work (on a laptop it is better to choose headphones, since the microphone is usually built-in);
  • The combined device is fully operational;
  • Here, as in the first case, it is recommended to select headphones for connection.

After choosing the best option and carrying out a simple procedure for connecting devices “via connectors,” proceed to the next chapter.
It will describe some of the subtleties of sound settings using Windows 7 as an example. ↑ Return

2.

Disabling Monopoly

It is possible that the microphone refuses to record sound because it is already being used by some program. By default, monopoly is enabled, and you can disable it in the microphone properties described in the “Using Standard Windows Tools” section.

Close all applications that may be associated with the micron, and then open one. There is a chance that some program did not close completely, but went into the background, taking away the rights to the microphone. Therefore, it is better to restart your computer to ensure that all running applications are completed.

History and types of microphones

The first acoustic device was invented back in 1878 by Heinrich Machalski. It looked like coal. Just don't think that the principle of its operation was to light coal in it. His work was based on the variability of resistance between grains of coal powder during pressure measurements.

Today there are a huge number of types of this device:

Microphones for computers that have both a USB and standard input;

  • For telephones, with their help we speak and are heard;
  • Those that are installed in the ear. They help you speak, listen, and do it unnoticed. They are used either by the military or by students who need to pass a difficult exam;
  • Concert microphones help cultural figures perform in large rooms in front of huge audiences.

Also, when purchasing a microphone, make sure that it is protected from dust and that the wind does not blow, creating interference, noise and other unpleasant sounds. They are: filter, fur (otherwise they are called dog or dead cat, it depends on the size), lattice (or basket).

How to connect two microphones to a computer

As a rule, a standard computer has one line output for connecting a microphone. But sometimes there is a need to connect two at the same time. For example, when recording joint vocals or karaoke. You can connect in several ways:

  • The most reliable option would be to purchase a professional audio interface. It provides connectivity via several different ports (USB, Firewire, PCI and PCI-E);
  • A good way would be to buy an external interface with built-in microphone preamps. Such a device is sold complete with the necessary drivers and, after installing them, makes it possible to simultaneously record and play back sound from different line inputs. This system also allows you to add special effects to the sound. To connect, you will additionally need three XLR cords with three pins;
  • A more budget-friendly version of the connection can be to use an external DVD player, which has two inputs for microphones. To do this, you need to take a regular stereo cable and connect the player to the computer. To connect microphones you will need two XLR-TRS cables. The sound quality when connected in this way will be poor because the DVD player has a low pre-amplification level. This may cause abnormal noise and whistling when using microphones near speakers at the same time.
  • Another way could be a homemade adapter. Using a soldering iron, you can make a small circuit in which two microphones will be connected to one line input. ATTENTION: when using this method, the sound recording quality will be extremely low and the noise level will be high.

How to apply filters

The Noise Reduction filter will help make the sound clearer and remove interference. For it, you can use the built-in OS settings or use the capabilities of the OBS program. To do this, click on the line with the corresponding name. The suppression level slider should be moved to a value of -60dB .

The next parameter is “Gain” . The user moves the slider to 0.00 dB . Another effect to add is Noise Passthrough . The first filter suppresses external sound interference; this parameter helps to remove any noise that arises during a conversation.

  1. Two levels will appear before the user - the upper and lower threshold.
  2. The upper value should be 58 dB .
  3. The lower figure should be 57 dB .
  4. Other values should be left unchanged.

To improve sound quality, you need to apply the Expander . It is needed for:

  • to suppress background noise;
  • to create smooth transitions.

The user must set the following values:

  • The recommended ratio is 3.50 to 1 . You can adjust the parameter by moving the sliders;
  • in the “Operation threshold” the indicator should be -60 dB ;
  • in the “Attack” set the value to 10ms ;
  • "Recovery" parameter should be set to 50 ms ;
  • “Output Gain” indicator is set to 0 dB ;
  • Going to the “Detection” , you need to select RMS .

“Compressor” filter is needed to automatically lower the volume . This function is especially useful when sharp sounds appear. Voice balancing also depends on it. The user can set the following values:

  • compression level/ratio - 10 to 1 ;
  • response threshold - 18 dB ;
  • attack - 6 ms ;
  • fall - 60 ms ;
  • output gain - 30 dB ;
  • in the “Mute source” you need to select “No” .

The last filter is “Limiter ”. It has only two parameters - response threshold and recovery . The user must set the values to 1.50 dB and 60 ms respectively.

The above values are approximate. They can be adjusted to suit your computer's settings.

Carefully! If the values are approximate, then the sequence of filter application is the same for all devices. If the order in which they are used is changed, the sound quality may deteriorate.

How to connect a microphone to a Mac OS computer

APPLE brand technology is radically different from other computers. The unusual interface makes the work a little difficult. But although the procedure for connecting a microphone on Mac OS is different from the Windows operating system, it will be quite easy to do. To do this you need to do the following:

  • connect the microphone to the computer in any convenient way (USB, Bluetooth, audio input);
  • in the upper left corner of the screen, click on the Apple icon;
  • select “System settings”;
  • open the “Sound” section;
  • Select the “Login” tab at the top of the window;
  • select a microphone (all available microphones will be shown in the list);
  • on the selected device, by moving the slider, adjust the “Input sensitivity” parameter
  • After speaking something into the microphone, check the signal level.

Why do you need to configure the microphone?

The OBS Studio program is actively used by streamers and bloggers. Among the available options are setting up sound in OBS and processing it at a professional level. After all, even expensive devices can produce unclear sound, and standard PC sound parameters are not suitable for certain microphones. This causes interference, background noise and makes communication difficult.

Using the program allows you to get rid of most problems with sound during a stream . But when working with OBS Studio you need to take into account some nuances:

  • filters should be applied in a certain sequence;
  • There are more parameters for sound correction;
  • To adjust some parameters you need to know in advance which digital values to set.

OBS Studio has extensive functionality for customizing high-quality sound. Therefore, ordinary users also install it in order to make video calls or keep in touch while playing. If the optimal parameters are set, the interlocutors will be able to hear each other, they will not have to shout into the microphone, and the conversation will not be interrupted by interference and background noise.

Where is the built-in microphone located on a laptop?

If the laptop is equipped with a webcam, a microphone is also provided. It is located in different places, depending on the manufacturer. Acer has it next to the webcam, on the top frame of the display. Or bottom left if the model is outdated. On ASUS laptops the built-in microphone is located near the keyboard, on Lenovo and HP - on the top frame of the display.

Microphone check

To check the operation of the configured microphone, you can use. Let's find it using Windows search.

Opens.

Click Start Recording and say a phrase. Click stop recording on the desktop for example. Then you listen and if you like everything, then the microphone is set up.

How to connect a webcam with microphone to a laptop

Also, some users have a question about how to connect a webcam with a microphone to a laptop. Most modern cameras are connected via a regular USB port, but some models, including most older ones, have a separate wire for connecting a microphone via an audio jack. This allows you to use the microphone separately from the camera, which is sometimes very convenient. All setup and connection are carried out in exactly the same way as when working with a regular microphone.

USB connector instead of a plug

After the described steps for setting up a device with a regular connection, many wondered what to do if I have a USB connector.

In fact, there are fewer problems with it than with the previous one. Connect the device through the appropriate input, wait for the drivers to install automatically and check its operation. That's all. Quite simple, fast and without problems.

Unlikely (but possible): the sound card has failed

We deliberately put this point last. If you are using a 3.5mm connection and none of the recommendations have helped, try USB devices.

The fact is that an analog signal is supplied through 3.5 mm, which the sound card converts to digital. And in headphones with a USB connection, the sound is transmitted directly in digital form.

Which microphone will be suitable for communicating on the Internet?

In our case, you can choose one of three main types of microphones:

  • Conventional with analog output;
  • Web cameras with microphones;
  • Microphones connected via USB.

Microphones with analog output

This is the most common type of microphone. They are found in various configurations: on a stick, with a stand, or combined with headphones. All of them are connected to the microphone jack on the PC using a regular “Jack 3.5”. Inside such a microphone there is a special capsule, which receives sound vibrations. The capsules themselves can have different characteristics in terms of their sensitivity and noise level. It is clear that cheap microphones do not have a particularly high level and quality. So the situation when an inexpensive microphone is very quiet, or too noisy, occurs quite often.

Web cameras with microphones and digital USB microphones

You can find cameras equipped with both a simple analog microphone and a digital one. In the first case, two cables will be connected to the PC at once: one to USB, the other to the microphone input. In fact, the microphone here is no different from the analog ones that we described above, it’s just hidden in the camera body.

In the second case, only one USB cable comes from the camera. This option is much preferable. This is due to the fact that the signal from the microphone capsule must be converted into digital form through a special analog-to-digital converter, which is already adjusted to the technical characteristics of the capsule and transmits sound in fairly good quality.

Of course, in inexpensive cameras the sound will also be far from ideal, but thanks to such a converter, the quality can be higher than that of analog microphones with terribly quiet sound. Among cameras with digital audio reception, Logitech products performed well. Moreover, even the cheapest models can boast of quite normal sound.

What is a USB microphone? In general, it is the same as a camera equipped with a microphone, only without a camera. Often, this type of microphone has the best sound quality. Unfortunately, they are quite rare on sale, and those that are available are professional models with a high price.

Microphone access not granted

One of the key differences in Windows 10 is the addition of additional privacy settings. The system provides the user with the ability to specify which programs will be allowed access to the microphone and which will not. And if the Windows 10 microphone does not work, then it is quite possible that this is due to these settings.

To check their current status, you need to:

  1. Press Win + i and open Settings. Next, go to “System”

  2. Select “Sound” and in the window that opens you need to go to “Microphone Privacy Options”.
  3. Check whether the required program has access to the microphone. If not, turn it on using the sliders.

And as practice shows, this is one of the most common reasons why the microphone does not work. In Windows 10, by default, permission is granted only to “trusted” programs that are installed from the built-in app store.
