Everything comes to an end someday, and our experiment is no exception. Over the course of two months, I had the chance to try the best of the keyboards available in the App Store, and after spending at least a week on each, I can reliably say that I tried out all their qualities. At the same time, for almost two months now I have not used the standard Apple keyboard, the same one that has lived with me since I bought my first iPhone five years ago. It was with her that I spent the past week, and the last page of the diary will be dedicated to her, on which we will also summarize the results of the experiment.
Standard keyboard in iOS 8
I missed this keyboard, if it's even possible to miss any software solution.
It may be hard to explain, but there's something about the standard keyboard that, despite its lack of features and additional features, sets it apart from all the rest. This is one of its few advantages. Advantages
During the experiment, I had a chance to try a keyboard in which there were no keys at all, as well as several keyboards in which it was almost impossible to hit the keys, and this was not required, since the developers relied on a smart adjustment system. The beauty of a standard keyboard is that its keys are incredibly pleasant and comfortable to hit. The adjustment system isn't so smart that it turns any imprecise movements into words, but it doesn't need to. I don’t know what Apple did, but unlike other keyboards, the keys on a standard keyboard are very easy to hit, even if you type fast enough. This is the most important advantage, everything else is trifles.
Of course, it is worth noting that, unlike many third-party keyboards, the standard one is as stable as possible. Flaws
Are there any disadvantages to a standard keyboard? If we compare the experience as a whole, then no, but if we compare individual features and solutions, then I liked some things about third-party keyboards. Switching languages is much more convenient in Fleksy and TouchPal. Swiping over a space while typing is very convenient. The emoji panel, which is not placed in a separate layout, is also a convenient solution. Third-party keyboards also have some other solutions that seem convenient, but in reality they are little things that solve non-existent problems. I'm talking about, for example, an extra character line and features like auto-space.
Unfortunately, predictive typing, which Apple called QuickType, does not work with the Russian language, and at the same time, all third-party keyboards with predictive typing that I have tried do not carry any restrictions for us - Russian-speaking users. Let's hope that after Apple finishes working on the Russian Siri, they will take up the Russian QuickType. In the end, they managed to make dictation in Russian, and this function works great. By the way, among third-party keyboards, only Swype can boast of built-in dictation, but this keyboard has another serious drawback, which I will mention below.
General impressions
The six best keyboards from the App Store each spent a week on my smartphone. I drew letters while driving on rough roads, entered words with gestures, tried to hit keys that were impossible to hit, and during the entire experiment I deleted a huge number of words. Those words that for some reason I did not delete, surprised my loved ones all this time and brought some variety to my communication with them. After trying different typing methods, different key layouts, and various additional features, I realized that my heart belongs to the standard iOS keyboard. I absolutely love hitting the keys and I can type very quickly without any assistance functions. I like to focus on letters and words rather than gestures, keys and visuals.
Now that the main result of the experiment is before your eyes, I would like to summarize some intermediate results and compare the convenience of specific solutions in seven experimental subjects. The ratings that I will present below are compiled solely on the basis of my own feelings and may cause disagreement among some.
