How to reset settings?
The English word wipe is translated as cleaning. In other words, this is clearing the memory of all data. Usually there are two options for this action - full wipe and partial wipe .
In the first case, information from the entire memory is deleted. Using a partial reset, you can clean individual partitions.
Separately, I would like to note that before performing the procedure, you need to make sure that the phone battery is charged. Also, if required, you need to save all important information - contacts, photos and other files. During the wipe data they will be deleted.
In the case of an Android phone, there are several ways you can reset the settings.
Reset via phone menu
If the phone boots, you can try to reset it through the Settings menu - the icon with the image of a gear. Here you need to find the “Restore and reset” item. It is usually located at the very bottom of the list. On some phones it can be found in "Advanced phone settings".
- Go to this menu, click on the item “ Reset to factory settings ”;
- then " Clear All ". The system will issue a warning message that the information will be deleted;
- after which we give our consent.
On some smartphones, for security purposes, you need to enter a special digital combination that the system itself will issue. This is done to prevent accidental pressing and memory formatting. After starting the recovery process, the phone screen goes dark, then lights up again. The screen displays the progress of the recovery process. After the process is completed, the smartphone reboots. The start screen will then open. Here you will need to perform the initial settings of the phone - select a language, specify account information, connect to the Wi-Fi network. There is nothing complicated. Read carefully, then enter the data. Most items can be skipped altogether by clicking the “Next” button.
Reset using recovery partition
This method is more complicated, but it helps even in severe cases. Often, you can use it to revive a phone that has stopped booting altogether or is unable to access “Settings.”
To do this, you need to turn off your phone completely. Then we look for the volume buttons. Press the volume up key and hold it. Then, without releasing this button, press the power button of the smartphone. After the splash screen appears on the screen, release both buttons. If the phone supports resetting settings in this way, a special menu with several items will appear on a black background. In this mode, to control the phone you need to use the volume buttons to move through menu items and the on/off keys to confirm your selection.
Select the item Wipe data factory reset . Confirm your choice by pressing the Power button once. The phone will reboot and numbers and inscriptions will begin to appear on a black background showing the progress of the process. Recovery usually takes a few minutes. If everything worked out, the phone will soon reboot and the initial settings screen will open, as in the first option. Sometimes you have to reboot your device manually by selecting Reboot.

Combination of service codes for Hard Reset
All manufacturers come up with a certain combination of signs for their phones that perform a factory reset. There is no one universal code. To find out the code for your Hard Reset, visit your brand’s website or chat on thematic forums. All combinations are entered in two ways: through regular dialing or making emergency calls. In the search, enter the phone model and write “combination for resetting settings and device model.” Or try from the most commonly used codes below.
- *2767*3855#
- *#*#7780#*#*
- *#*#7378423#*#*
Why is this reboot needed?
The fact is that in modern Android devices there are many different applications that can sometimes fail. But every smartphone has an internal independent area that stores system files.
So, if your OS has failed, or you yourself have configured something incorrectly: for example, you set a pattern and forgot the pattern, the manufacturer has provided key combinations that, when pressed, return the smartphone OS to its original state. This process is actually called Hard reset.
Advantages and disadvantages
Resetting settings can be both a very useful and slightly frustrating process for the user.
Pros of resetting settings:
- You receive the phone as if you had just purchased it;
- Increases battery life;
- The phone's memory is freed up.
Disadvantages of factory reset:
- All media files are deleted from the device’s memory: photos, contacts, notes, music, documents, reports on the use of certain programs, applications, call histories, etc.;
- After the reboot, you will need to log in to your mi account again, since the account information in the Xiaomi system will also be deleted, which can cause difficulties for someone who does not remember the information associated with the account.
What does the word Reboot system now mean?
This menu item performs a complete reboot of the device. After selecting this option, the smartphone will load the standard Android operating system without any changes. Typically, this item is used after completing all manipulations in recovery.

What are we talking about?
Factory reset is a hardware reset of all settings and returning the device to its original “factory” state. The final version of the term has not yet taken root, so this “hard reboot” procedure is called differently by different sources; you can find terms similar in meaning: hard reset, Cold Boot, Master Reset.
So, by performing a factory reset Android, we will achieve a reboot of the device, thanks to which all factory settings of the system are restored, and all operating system information disappears: SMS, contacts, installed programs. Please note that information deleted in this way cannot be restored. In this case, the data located on the memory card and SIM card is not deleted.
iCloud activation lock vs FRP - who is better?
The pioneer of such a mechanism was Apple with iCloud activation lock, so without comparing them the description would be incomplete, because the solution from Google came out later, and probably not without an eye on the competitor.
- Initial setup and the need to set a password.
The latest versions of Android and iOS require password creation by default, but are not required, so there is parity there.
- Explicit warning when resetting the device to factory settings from the settings menu.
Here the Apple product will explicitly ask you to disable the option to prevent re-activation only when flashing firmware via a PC/MAC not from DFU; in other cases, it is assumed that only the owner of the device can enter the password and enter the reset menu. Android does not warn anywhere or in any way that something is activated during a reset. From a security point of view, this is a plus; from a surprise and usability point of view, it’s a minus.
- Hints and ease of unlocking by the owner of the device, who knows both the login and password or their variants.
iOS shows the beginning and end of the email address that was used on the device before the reset, Android does not. On the one hand, this is a plus for safety, on the other hand, it is at least a meager opportunity to remove the lock with your own hands if the device was handed over to you for use, or it became a victim of children’s experiments.
Of course, any or almost any protection can be hacked or bypassed, it’s just a matter of necessity and resources to solve the problem. But it’s worth remembering that when Apple introduced this protection, the number of iPhone thefts sharply declined due to the fact that disassembling a phone into parts is too specific and a non-trivial process for an attacker. If the appearance of this mechanism after the wider spread of Android M on the market leads to the same trend, this will already be a big victory.
For those who plan to give their Android M-based device for permanent use to children, colleagues, relatives, or simply sell, it is worth remembering that to deactivate FRP, you must delete accounts from the corresponding menu before resetting the settings, and also clear data from the “security” menu "
What is Wipe data/factory reset?
All devices have memory limitations. As the phone fills with information, the speed gradually decreases. As a result, the phone loads applications slowly, they freeze during operation and other glitches occur. Closing a frozen application becomes more difficult over time. This situation occurs often on both phones and tablets.
Professionals in special services will be able to return the device to operation. You will have to pay for such a service, as well as spend time waiting for work. In addition, it is not always easy to find a suitable workshop. Large cell phone stores operate special services that take too long to serve customers.
If you try to find information about a similar case on the Internet, you will find that you can solve the problem yourself.
A person who uses an Android gadget, as a rule, often hears the word “wipe”, but few know the meaning of this word. The term can be translated from Latin as wiping, wiping. Based on this, wipe data is formatting or resetting the phone settings to its original state.
Fastboot program
The Fastboot utility will perform a universal job of clearing the phone's memory. You will need a USB cable and a PC. It is through the computer that you enter the device. To restore the original settings from the manufacturer, unlock the bootloader. Each phone has its own unique combination. Having connected the phone, call the command line. It becomes a tool for issuing the necessary commands. As an administrator, we write these symbols .\adb reboot bootloader. Where .\ is a required element only for Windows 10: other OSes do not need it. Fastboot erase userdata – a set of characters that activate system cleaning. Fastboot reboot – consolidates the result obtained by restarting the OS.
Recovery options on different brands of smartphones
Each model of Android device has its own ways to enter the recovery menu. Let’s look at the most popular devices from well-known brands.
Meizu
This manufacturer has greatly simplified the method of resetting settings. The user will need to click on “ON” and the sound rocker up. The “Clear data” option will be displayed. Click on it and agree to the cleaning.
Meizu Recovery Mode
Xiaomi
As standard, we press the volume up and “ON”. There is a chance of getting on a Chinese menu. In this case, you go down. The very last square on the right will switch to the English layout. Click Recovery and OK.
Executing Wipe from Recovery on Xiaomi
Now click on “Wipe data” and “Wipe All Data”. We confirm our actions to continue – “Confirm”.
Confirm cleaning
When the return process is complete, go to the menu. Double click on the word “Reboot” and “Reboot to System”.
Reboot to System
Will the Android version roll back when resetting to factory settings?
All operations will be carried out from the main menu of Android OS. You need to go to the “Settings” item, select the tab called “Privacy” there, and then click on the “Reset Settings” tab.
As you can see in the photo above, here you can activate the following items:
“Data Archiving” (“Data Copying”) - The system will automatically save copies of all applications installed on your device, settings from Google services, as well as data about each Wi-Fi network previously saved on the phone.
“Auto recovery” - All programs will be automatically restored with all settings.
Click "Reset settings" and confirm that you want to erase data. You will see a window with a list of data that is deleted after resetting the settings. As soon as the phone reboots, you can reinstall any programs and add accounts.

How does it work?
When the conditions for activating FRP are met, the test data is placed in a memory section that is used to store calibrations of the radio part of the device. The trick to this move is that this memory area is write-once. Thus, it is simply impossible to overwrite them or replace them without an extremely serious approach to the matter, which will involve desoldering memory modules and fighting the new Android cryptography. In other cases, the attacker will receive a phone without data, which he will not even be able to use.
Option 2: Restore and reset
In Android settings you can see such an item as “Backup and reset”. It is designed to reset system settings and restore from a backup saved on the Internet.
Before you begin, it is strongly recommended that you perform a backup by selecting the appropriate option.
Click on the "Reset settings" option.
Scroll down and optionally check the box next to “Clear phone memory - card” to delete personal data from the SD memory card, such as photos, music and other user data. Click on the “Reset phone settings” button.
User data will be deleted and factory data will be restored.
Option 1. Recovery Mode
This method is recommended to be used if your device does not turn on at all, works intermittently, and no other methods help solve the problem.
Turn off the device and boot into Recovery Mode by pressing several keys together. Each manufacturer has its own buttons:
- “+” on the volume rocker and the “ON/OFF” button;
- “-” on the volume rocker and the “ON/OFF” button;
- Volume “+” and “-” together and the “ON/OFF” button;
- Volume “+” and “-” together, the “Home” key and the “ON/OFF” button;
- In Chinese devices, hold down the volume key and connect the charger.
The Volume Up/Down buttons allow you to move up and down through the recovery menu, and the ON/OFF button selects commands. In the latest devices, control in “Recovery Mode” can be normal (touch).
Select "wipe data/factory reset" and confirm the system reset by selecting "Yes - delete all user data". When the wipe is complete, select the “reboot system now” option.
It will be a little more difficult to see the reset on Chinese phones. For example, in the “iconBIT NetTAB Mercury XL” or the clone “Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9500” the recovery menu is in Chinese. If you have the same situation, the picture below shows the Russian translation of the “Recovery Mode” menu.
To navigate through the menu, use only the volume “-” key, because The “+” key is intended to return to a higher level. To select the highlighted command, press the ON/OFF button.
To run a full reset of Android settings in Chinese phones, you need to select the 6th option. What's funny is that after selection, the command will be executed without confirmation.
After a few minutes of waiting, your Android device will boot up as it did when you first started it after purchase, possibly asking you to add a Google account.
Causes
Let's first talk about the reasons that may cause a reset:
- If you want to sell your phone. I recommend and even insist that when reselling a smartphone, you need to delete all your data from it. But save it on your computer or Google server in advance.
- You caught a virus on your smartphone. You can read about what viruses exist here. There are quite a lot of types of spies, etc., then in this case a reset is required. Although there are viruses on smartphones that are not removed even after a reset. In this case, it is better to contact a professional service, or it is better to buy a new smartphone.
- The smartphone began to slow down, and methods such as clearing the cache and rebooting did not help.
