How to Identify and Fix iCloud Backup Issues


Apple's iCloud service makes it easy and automatic to back up your iOS devices. You never have to connect the device to your computer, but your things are still safe. However, when backups don't work, you need to troubleshoot.

Make sure your device is backing up

iPads and iPhones should alert you if they haven't backed up to iCloud in a few weeks. This won't happen unless you set up your device for iCloud backup first. Some people just assume it happens automatically, but you still need to configure it. In other cases, backups simply go bad, so it's worth checking.

Go to Settings->iCloud and make sure Backup is set to On. However, this does not mean that your device is backed up. Under Backup Now, the latest backup should be within the last few days. For iCloud backup to work (according to Apple), you need to make sure:

• Your device is constantly under voltage.

• It is connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi.

• The screen is locked.

A common problem I see is hotels with password gateways. You are connected to Wi-Fi but not connected to the Internet. You will need to enter a special password on the "capture page" for your iPhone or iPad to connect to the Internet.

If you haven't backed up in a while and you meet all three conditions, tap Back up now. Your iPhone or iPad should complete the backup and your problem will be resolved.

Checking your Internet connection

Poor internet connection speed can also interfere with the procedure. To check it on a PC, you need to take several steps:

  1. Go to a specialized website. For example: speedtest.net/ru
  2. Select the “Start scan” function.
  3. Wait one minute. At this time, the program will automatically check your connection speed and then display the final results. It is advisable to close all windows in the browser - they can lower them, since when sites are open, data is still received and transmitted.
  4. At the end, the ping will appear - the connection reaction time, and the lower it is, the better. The optimal value is 40m/s. The speed of data transfer and reception, measured in MB or GB, is also displayed here: it all depends on what indicators are declared by the provider.

When in doubt, turn it on and off again

This works for both iOS and your iCloud backup. First, switch your iCloud backup setting to Off. Then turn it back on. Tap Backup now and see if the backup completes. Otherwise, turn off backup and then turn off your iPad or iPhone completely. This is a full Slide to Power off not just putting your device to sleep.

After a problematic device reboot, try enabling backup again. This might work! If it still doesn't work, try signing out of your iCloud account. Go to Settings->iCloud->Sign Out. After logging out, Apple advised me to sign in to another account to clear my data. Apple warns you that the data on your phone will be deleted. Since it's on iCloud, it will come back again. You can login with meaningless data using a random name and password. I use let mine as username and password. It won't log you in, but it will still remove some of your old stuff.

Restart your iPhone or iPad and then sign out of the fake account. Then sign in to the correct account and reboot again.

What can be done and how to fix the problem?

There are several options to get rid of the backup error.

Method number 1 – Pay

Everyone wants money and Apple is no exception. For a relatively small amount of money, you can simply change your iCloud plan and go from free (5 GB) to any other plan with more storage. So to speak, buy extra space in the “cloud”. How to do it?

Open “Settings – Your account – iCloud – Storage – Buy more space” and select the tariff that suits you.

After payment, iCloud storage increases, which means there is already enough space for your data - a copy begins to be created without any failures.

Method number 2 – Free, but relatively long

Don't want to pay anyone? I fully understand your desire - there is never too much money, and then Apple will write off the subscriber every month. We were completely stunned!

Well, you can do it for free. But then you will have to “keep within” 5 GB of cloud storage. To do this, go to “Settings – Your Account – iCloud – Storage – Management” and see what documents and data are stored there.

Do you see how something extra is taking up precious space? Feel free to turn it off.

It’s also worth paying attention to “iCloud Photo Library” (Settings – Photos and Camera). If this option is enabled, then your photos and videos are forced to be sent to the “cloud”, thereby “eating up” storage space.

But sometimes a situation like mine can happen - there is as much as 4.9 GB of free space (out of 5 GB free), and when creating an iCloud backup it still fails. Why is this happening? The thing is, the size of the next copy is much larger than 5 GB - the iPhone cannot create it because it will not fit into the allotted limit.

You can also view this information for yourself by opening the “Backups” tab in iCloud Storage. Moreover, here you can always correct the data that will make up the copy (in order to “fit within” the allotted 5 GB) and, perhaps, you will even succeed!

Method number 3 – Free and fast

However, you can get rid of all these annoying signs indicating backup failures in a simpler way.

It is enough to disable the creation of copies in iCloud and use the same iTunes for this, where the space for your data will be limited only by the size of the computer’s hard drive.

To do this, open “Settings – Your account – iCloud” and move the slider opposite the corresponding menu item.

That's it, there will be no more failures. Victory!

Now a backup will be created on your computer automatically when you connect and sync with iTunes. And it’s better not to put this matter off for a long time, but to go and do it right now - it certainly won’t hurt, believe my little experience :)

Delete your old iCloud backup

Sometimes the backup can get stuck on the iCloud side and you need to start from scratch. Just in case, make a manual backup directly in iTunes. You won't be erasing the data on your iPad or iPhone, but you will be deleting your iCloud backup. Since you'll lose one backup, it's time to create another.

After iTunes backup, go to your device and go to Settings->iCloud->Storage->Manage Storage. There you will see a list of devices. Tap your device, and then tap Delete backup. Apple warns you that this will delete backup data from the servers. It doesn't delete data synced to iCloud, such as pictures and contacts. After deleting the backup, you will need to enable it again.

iCloud remembers the old devices you backed up to. If you've replaced your old device, you can safely delete its iCloud backup.

When I recently had this problem, the backup on Apple's servers was not being deleted. No matter what I did, the backup would freeze with the device. Apple was able to delete the backup on its side.

Solution 1: Reconnect your phone to the system

A temporary malfunction of the communication or application modules may result in the error discussed. In this context, unplugging and reconnecting devices may resolve the issue.

  1. Close all Apple applications, including iTunes.
  2. Now disconnect the USB cable from both devices.
  3. After a while, restart both devices and connect again.
  4. Now try the backup again to check if the problem is resolved.

Make sure you don't copy too many files

If you don't have enough space in your iCloud account, the backup may not complete. iOS should warn you that the backup will not complete for this reason. In my experience, this doesn't always happen, especially if you're close to the account size limit. Other times, part of the glitch is that Apple thinks you're backing up too much data, even if you're not. You can tell iCloud to back up less of your data for troubleshooting purposes. If you've reduced your backup size but still don't have any iCloud space, the problem isn't space.

Check for network problems and reset them

If you have slow download speeds on your internet connection, your backup may have expired. If you are using someone else's connection (for example, at work), the backup may be blocked.

Try using a different network environment and see if that affects your backup speed. If all this doesn't work, you may have to reset your network settings. This causes your iPhone or iPad to forget all previous wireless networks, so you'll have to join them again (and possibly remember passwords). Go to Settings->General->Reset->Reset Network Settings and enter your password. After that, restart your iPad or iPhone and try the backup again.

Restore your iPhone or iPad

As a last resort, you may have to wipe the device and restore the data from a backup. If you make a backup in iTunes, you can restore everything. This process takes a long time, but it works even in the most complex scenarios. To do this, you will need to put your iPhone or iPad into recovery mode.
