Design
There is something Vertu about the iPhone X, especially if you know what you're dealing with. We are dealing with surgical stainless steel, an alloy developed by Apple specifically for its products. To ensure that the color of the glass matches the color of the steel, the paint is applied at the molecular level. The phrase “special technology” can be repeated and repeated and repeated - one feels that this is a special product for the company, and therefore the feeling of ownership is very interesting. During a day without a case, if scratches appear on the surface, they are microscopic. Honestly, after a few seconds you forget about the protrusion, especially since you can change the aspect ratio when viewing, there may be stripes on the left and right.
God, how black it is, it’s just something.
Now CHARGE PERCENTAGE DISPLAY IS NOT SUPPORTED, apparently because there is already little space in the right compartment for service indicators (network signal level, Wi-Fi, and battery). The third news, a bunch of new gestures, and you will have to sweat the first day, but it’s even nice - I repeat, the device is not like any other iPhone. You move your finger from bottom to top, vibration, the application menu opens, here you can close them.
Move the program window up and go home. A beautiful transition from application to application - move your finger from the lower left corner to the right corner, you need to describe an arc. Everything is very smooth, beautiful, and, for sure, for many companies (Samsung, for example) this will serve as a source of inspiration for the design team. Or take Apple Pay - you need to double-click the power button, select a card - you will see an animated FaceID splash screen and the payment will occur. The control panel with switches comes out if you drag your finger down from the upper right corner. The display supports TrueTone technology, 5.8-inch diagonal, resolution 2436×1125 pixels, 458 pixels per inch. I swore off talking about boring characteristics, but we can’t do without it - there is something to work on. I would like to be able to enable login to the desktop IMMEDIATELY after FaceID is triggered; I would like to receive updates for a number of programs sooner. As I write these lines, there are no updates, and Sberbank, for example, looks terrible, with dark stripes at the top and bottom. I assume that from November 3rd I will have to properly update my hundred programs. And don’t forget, rebooting the iPhone X now happens like on figure eight - press volume up, volume down, hold down the power button until the logo appears.
A little more about gestures - they ask what to do if you click on an icon to change the location or delete a program, and they start to “shake” - you need to swipe your finger from bottom to top. And in general, don’t be alarmed - the strip at the bottom indicating Home helps you get used to it faster, the gestures here work as they should, I didn’t notice any glitches or lack of logic. After just a couple of hours, you can control your iPhone X with your eyes closed.
Water and stone
The smartphone is not afraid of water and dust, “Protection degree IP67 according to IEC 60529”, as the official data says, in reality you can take it to the bath, shower, swim and dive. But keep all chargers away from water and bathrooms. After salt water - rinse in fresh water, use common sense to help; It's not worth diving a hundred meters with an iPhone X. As for falls - stainless steel is a reliable material, but glass does not like stone. I know for myself that I’m a hands-on person, so I immediately got a Just Mobile Quattro Air case, put a magnet inside to hold it in the car, and I walk around like that. FaceID
You can set up FaceID during the initial setup or later, everything is much simpler than with TouchID. We look into the camera, rotate our heads until we completely fill the field. The TrueDepth camera and all the hardware of the smartphone work instantly, facial recognition is good in a variety of conditions: it’s cloudy in Moscow now, so there were no problems during the day at dusk. Over time, the system learns and recognizes you with glasses, a hat, with a beard and mustache, without a beard and mustache, in a variety of guises.
Basically, the focus is on the eyes, nose and mouth, so if the device is on the side, the lock will not open; but if you look at your smartphone, the lock opens. Then you need to slide the screen up and, voila, we get to the desktop - this does not happen automatically yet. Let me remind you that TouchID speeds up working with the device, while FaceID requires an additional action. Some programs, when using a smartphone, ask for FaceID, a menu appears and you need to look at the smartphone. The operating range is long; I was able to unlock the device from about forty centimeters and in conditions with poor lighting. There are no problems in the dark or in the sun. I remember how the Samsung Galaxy S8 asked me in Dubai to open my eyes wide on the beach so that it would unlock. I opened them, opened them, opened them, until the attendant came running and asked if everything was okay with me and if I needed a doctor. With the iPhone X, you don’t need to open your eyes or make faces - you can do this in Messages to make animated emoticons, but in life everything is unlocked instantly.
Of course, there are a lot of thoughts about security here, because at night someone can unlock the device and do something. You can’t add a second person - as was the case with fingerprints: my wife and I can easily log into each other’s smartphones and tablets, because - you never know. They are already selling masks for protection while sleeping on Ali; it is not recommended to use FaceID for children under 13 years of age and for those who have twins or very similar relatives. There are many reservations, but, in fact, the level of protection is even better than using TouchID. It is quite possible that Apple will add a fingerprint sensor built into the display for future devices - so that “security” reaches its apogee. But you can live with FaceID - now there are notifications on the screen, hidden from prying eyes, I look right on the screen and the messages are revealed. By the way, you can now wake up the iPhone X by touching the display, without double taps and other things.
A little practice at different times and in different situations. In the car, if the device is “glued” to the holder, you wake up the smartphone with your finger, facial recognition occurs, in the dark and from a great distance this happens instantly - amazingly. Then swipe up to go to the desktop. At first it’s unusual, but after a day it becomes commonplace. You are reading in bed at night, the device is blocked, you lift it to your face, move the curtain, read again. Just as Touch ID was once amazing, it worked instantly, so now Face ID is amazing, which does not cause problems for the user.

I tried to pay for several things using Apple Pay and Face ID, in different stores - just yesterday I went to a tire repair shop, then for groceries, then bought winter 95 Nikes, then went to pick up things from the dry cleaner. There were no problems with the terminals, in one place there was a cancellation of payment, an Alfa Bank card, but, according to the seller, this is some kind of strange terminal. There were no problems with the card in other places. Payment is instant, you double-click on the side button to call up Wallet (from a locked state), then all you have to do is look at the screen. Both Touch ID and Face ID are equally convenient. I repeat, everything is like with a finger, but you don’t have to “press” anywhere - I looked, the action happened. If you don't look, nothing will happen.
