In a word, everything that is most important is here, without unnecessary bells and whistles. The new SE is not for those who want to show off their iPhone purchase. This is an excellent device for those who do not want to overpay. By spending 40,000 rubles (less in the US and Europe) you will get an excellent smartphone with all the modern features, and updates, perhaps even more for the next 4 years. Design, weight, dimensions

The form factor and design are completely borrowed from the iPhone 8. This is due to the low price requirement. It is impossible to get the performance and appearance of modern models for 40 thousand rubles.

There are frames around the screen and a Home button with a Touch ID v2 fingerprint scanner. For many, this will even be a plus, since they consider the fingerprint scanner a more convenient unlocking option than Face ID facial recognition.

iPhone SE 2022 is the best small smartphone

I am aware that in 2022, many people are consciously choosing smartphones with a large display. And good - their money, their decision. In turn, I consciously decided to take a different path.

The previous devices I used were OnePlus 6 (6.3 inches) and Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro (6.4 inches). And I still love them both in many ways, I honestly think the OP6 is still one of the fastest smartphones out there. However, what bothers me is that I can't easily reach the top of the screen with my thumb.

I don't have this problem with the new iPhone SE 2. Of course, it has thick bezels at the bottom and top - if this bothers anyone, I advise you to buy another device. However, if you still have the first iPhone SE or iPhone 8 and have decided to upgrade to something newer, faster and not too big, then the SE 2 Gen is also for you.

Rumors about a weak battery were exaggerated

Here you need to clearly separate facts from statistics.

I absolutely agree that the new iPhone SE has a “skinny” battery by the standards of 2022, and the 19th, and the 18th too.

1821 mAh is the same capacity as the iPhone 8. And the iPhone 8, in turn, has earned a “so-so” reputation for battery life. These are the facts.

The statistics, at least mine, tell a slightly different story.

If you squeeze the maximum out of your iPhone : it will be discharged in 4-5 hours. The interest will melt every 3 minutes or faster.

By maximum load, I mean simultaneously connecting wireless headphones via Bluetooth, streaming Apple Music in the background, screen brightness above average, Safari, Telegram, YouTube, games from the App Store, auto-updates, camera, everything is included.

In this mode, the iPhone SE deflated in about 4.5 hours. I stopped tormenting it at 4% charge and connected it to the outlet. The iPhone 11 Pro Max would work 2 times longer - it can, it can.

If used moderately, as usual : 8-12 hours. That is, from morning to evening.

By moderate use, I mean a little background music via Bluetooth headphones, periodic 10-minute sessions in a web browser (Safari) and instant messenger (Telegram), about half an hour on YouTube, half an hour of games (Fortnite), half an hour of email, 20 minutes of calls , a total of 30 minutes in iMessage. And between them there are pauses. In general, the workload of a normal person.

In this situation, the iPhone SE lived with me from 9:30 am not only until the evening - at 6 am the next day it showed another 38%. Yes, the breaks were long, but the overall workload successfully simulated how I would use the iPhone in reality, on a normal workday.

What can we conclude from this: the iPhone SE can be quickly discharged if you try. But for the majority, it will live peacefully from morning until late evening . For mega-active users, there is always a charger, portable batteries, laptops, and even an iPad Pro will do. Wireless storage is also supported.

Well, I’m wondering how many people imagine such a thin and light iPhone, but with a battery level of the iPhone 11 Pro Max. You will take them in your hands at the same time! "Promax" will seem like a brick. How else could it be? Either checkers or go.

Mega-gadget lovers are not SE's audience. So their requirements, along with the desire to look at displays 24/7, are simply inappropriate to extend to a smartphone with a “folk” origin. For everyone else, the new iPhone’s battery will be enough for everything they need.

Waterproof and comfortable

The second generation Apple iPhone SE is only 7.3 mm thick, weighs 148 grams and has rounded edges. It is very thin, lightweight and extremely comfortable to use with one hand.

The body is made of glass and metal, and the workmanship is on par with the best flagship smartphones. In my opinion, the advantage over the iPhone 8 is that the front of the SE 2020 is black, so it naturally masks the display. Thanks to this, the device looks better.

IP67 water resistance will help the equipment survive a fall into the bathtub or a sudden downpour that takes you by surprise. An accidental spill of a drink on the body will not harm it either.

Frame

Both models received four identical colors: space gray, silver, gold and rose gold. But the materials are different: the SE retains the design of the iPhone 5s, so the glass inserts at the top and bottom of the case have not gone away.

The iPhone 6s is made entirely of aluminum.

The layout of the physical controls on smartphones is only partially the same. The power button for SE is located on the top panel on the right, for 6s it is on the right side panel. The overall quality of the iPhone SE 2 display is at a high level. Its only weaker side compared to AMOLED is the black depth, although overall everything looks very good here.

There is True Tone technology, which ensures the correct color temperature in any lighting conditions, as well as a wide range of DCI-P3 colors for more realistic color reproduction. A panel with a standard 60Hz refresh rate and no HDR support. These are also additional elements that have contributed to cost reduction.

Yes, thick, old-fashioned frames can be off-putting, I know that. Every smartphone has its own disadvantages, but the sum of the pros and cons must be taken into account when making a final assessment. However, if you ignore the thick bezels, you can enjoy super-fast performance, good build quality, and a comfortable touchpad.

Display

iPhone SE, like its “big brother” 5s, received a 4-inch Retina display with a resolution of 1,136 x 640 pixels (326 pixels per inch). iPhone 6s comes with a 4.7-inch Retina display with a resolution of 1,334 x 759 pixels (the same 326 pixels per inch).

The 6s's screen is much more accurate, with a contrast ratio of 1,400:1, compared to just 800:1 on the SE. The maximum brightness is the same in both cases - 500 candelas, both smartphones support the sRGB standard and offer an oleophobic display coating.

The new 3D Touch technology - pressing on the display to bring up a special application menu - is only available on the iPhone 6s. Apple's flagship from 2015 has another exclusive feature - the Reachability function for more convenient work with a “large” display, but the iPhone SE with its 4-inch screen does not need such “crutches”. Finally, only the iPhone 6s has a function to “zoom” (increase) the image on the display.

Fast fingerprint scanner

The round Touch ID scanner is located at the bottom - it's not a button, but rather a touchpad. However, it gives a very realistic pressing effect thanks to pressure recognition and a good vibration motor.

The reader works great, and is especially convenient these days when everyone outside has to wear a mask. The finger is recognized instantly and accurately.

iPhone 12, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max

But what if you want an iPhone with thin frames, an OLED display and a modern design with smooth edges? You need to take the iPhone 12, which is superior to the previous model in all respects: processor, cameras, display and, most importantly, design.

Apple has compared the basic and Pro versions of the twelfths in many respects, reducing the number of significant differences between them to one - the 12 Pro has a camera with 2x optical zoom. If you often take photos of people, take the iPhone 12 Pro - portraits on its telephoto camera turn out amazing. Or 12 Pro Max if you need maximum battery life.

iPhone SE 2 camera

Throughout the day, the new iPhone SE takes very high-quality photos and records excellent stabilized video at 4K 60fps. Things are worse at night because, unfortunately, the camera doesn't have a dedicated night mode by default (you can find it on other camera apps in the App Store).

Photos from the iPhone SE 2022 camera impress primarily with very good tonal dynamics. The sky and clouds do not fade, and the buildings, trees and grass are not too dark. Colors are rich, with a slight HDR effect. In terms of color and contrast, everything is just perfect. Detail is also excellent, with Apple proving that a 12-megapixel camera is enough to take very good, sharp photos.

The front camera is also capable here. Portrait effects can be applied to both the front and rear cameras. The little iPhone recognized my face and applied bokeh even when I was wearing a mask. Night shots aren't tragically weak, but they still lack a night mode that would increase brightness and add an HDR effect.

The recorded 4K 60fps video looks great in my opinion. Colors, sharpness, smoothness - everything is at the highest level. Even the stabilization while walking works as it should. You will also be able to shoot Full HD video at 30 fps with the front camera. Yes, modern flagships already offer 4K here, but in practice the actual quality matters more. Videos from the front camera of the iPhone SE 2 look good.

CPU

Both the iPhone 6s and iPhone SE have the same chip - the 64-bit Apple A9 with a built-in M9 motion coprocessor.

iOS 13 and software

The transition from iPhone 8/7/SE to the new SE 2022 will be completely hassle-free. The interface is the same, the touch mode is similar (only faster), the programs are similar, and the system settings are almost identical. It's like being in your own car, except now it has a Ferrari engine.

I tested a new Apple phone running iOS 13.4.x. There are only applications from Apple; the device is devoid of unnecessary programs from other manufacturers. At first, we receive only basic tools that will allow us to start using the device comfortably.

Safari web browser, email, cards, wallet with the ability to quickly add cards via camera scanning, file manager with access to iCloud storage, messages with support for the sensational iMessage, FaceTime video conferencing, video editing applications, Apple Office, locator, notes, reminders, calendar, photos, music and much more.

In addition, we have access to a rich offer in the App Store, where we will find many free and paid third-party applications.

For me the most useful are:

1. AirDrop, which does not have an equally good analogue on Android or Windows. Allows you to quickly transfer even large files to another phone or computer.
2. AirPlay, which detects nearby media devices and allows you to play music on them, for example. So I listen to my favorite music from Spotify and YouTube on my audio system.
3. Apple Pay, which works somewhat more conveniently than Google Pay, because it allows you to make contactless purchases without entering a PIN code for goods whose value exceeds a certain amount.
4. FaceTime is one of the simplest yet convenient video calling apps that also guarantees good quality.
5. iMessage is just a chat, but in practice it turns out to be very functional software in terms of sending graphics, voice recording, etc.

We also get one year of free access to Apple TV, plus great automatic iCloud sync for a decent price.

Camera

The main camera is the same in both cases - 12 megapixels, f/2.2 aperture, pixel size - 1.22µ, the ability to take Live Photos, True Tone flash, 5-element lens, slow motion mode, etc. Apple however, he notes that the 6s uses a “newer” matrix.

But the front camera is clearly the weak point of the iPhone SE. An archaic module of only 1.2 megapixels is installed here! The iPhone 6s has a more modern front camera - 5 MP. The aperture sizes are also different, and also not in favor of the iPhone SE - f/2.4 versus f/2.2 (the smaller the better) for the 6s. Apple decided to save money.

Flagship performance

The new iPhone SE is very fast. The device has the same processor as the iPhone 11 Pro, and at the same time a lower screen resolution, which puts less strain on the chipset. Performance is a little limited compared to the 11 Pro in that the SE 2 has a smaller battery, but in practice you don't really feel it at all.

The Geekbench 5 test shows that the Apple iPhone SE 2 for 40 thousand rubles. has higher performance than the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra (more than 100 thousand rubles) and Huawei P40 Pro (more than 80 thousand rubles).

You will definitely feel the difference during real work. The device instantly copes with any task. All applications run quickly and games look perfectly smooth. This also applies to software that uses augmented reality (AR). In a word, cool.

It is very thin, very light. And small

It would seem, well, it’s obvious, Nikita, what you’re talking about here.

But wait. I carry my iPhone 11 Pro Max every day. I already forgot that there are iPhones that are smaller, lighter or thinner. I also don’t remove the leather case. Previously there was also protective glass.

And when I took out the new iPhone SE, I had this strange feeling as if something was wrong. It is so small, light, portable, one-handed, that out of habit you are afraid to use it, in case it slips through your hand.

Much of this is the real reason for people to buy the iPhone SE. “Shovels” are not suitable for everyone.

This is fluff, no less: the iPhone SE weighs some 148 grams . The previous one was of course lighter, only 113 grams (23% lighter than the new one). But the iPhone 5c was heavier, 132 grams. So, depending on what you compare it to... I didn’t feel any really noticeable regression.

And since we’re comparing, the iPhone 11 Pro Max without a case, without glass, weighs 226 grams. It turns out that it is 35% more than the iPhone SE 2022. This is where you notice the difference right away.

In general, it turned out to be a small, nimble iPhone. Don't be nostalgic for the old SE, the train has left. It's enough that app developers around the world quietly hate it.

Stereo speakers and sound quality

The iPhone SE 2 has two speakers - one on the bottom edge (main, loud), and the second above the display (secondary, quieter). The sound quality from the speakers is good, but not great, like the iPhone 11 Pro. There's no classic 3.5mm jack, although you can connect headphones directly via the Lightning port or use an adapter. The sound quality in the headphones is very good, even through an adapter.

Classically, on one of the sides of the case there is a switch for quickly muting the sound. This is a well-known and very useful solution.

Design

Like it or not, the iPhone SE looks exactly the same as the iPhone 8 coming in 2022. This is explained simply: Apple took this step to avoid investing in a new production process and keep the cost of the device at a minimum level. The phones differ only in the color palette and logo placement; in the new product, the apple is located right in the center of the back.

The appearance and large frames of the iPhone SE 2 may seem archaic by the standards of 2022, but without exaggeration I will say that the smartphone looks quite stylish. This “classic” design has many connoisseurs. To date, Apple has sold about 500 million devices with 4.7-inch displays, which once again confirms that this form factor works.

The first thing you'll notice when you pick up the new iPhone SE is how light and compact it is. This is the perfect size for those who don't want to use a large smartphone. The Home button with built-in Touch ID is the only way to unlock the smartphone, since there are no TrueDepth sensors. You'll be able to use the 7MP front-facing camera for selfies and FaceTime calls, but it doesn't support face scanning, Animoji, or animated notes.

Having used Face ID for the past few years, I had forgotten how great it feels to get Touch ID up and running. The Home button makes interacting with the interface less fussy than using swipes. It is much more convenient to pay for the same purchases using a fingerprint than with Face ID confirmation. While the latter has its advantages, the Home button is still as easy to use as before.

Unlike the original model, the new iPhone SE does not have a headphone jack. Apple included branded EarPods in the box, but they are connected using a Lighting connector rather than a 3.5 mm jack. Those who have good wired headphones will have to invest in an adapter. As for the multimedia speaker, everything is in order: the stereo sound is loud and of high quality, just like on older models.

The iPhone SE is also rated IP67 for water resistance, meaning it can withstand being submerged for up to 30 minutes at a depth of 1 meter. To test, I immersed the phone in a container of water for half an hour, after which it worked absolutely fine. Protection against moisture and dust is extremely rare in Android devices costing up to $400, so it’s especially nice that the iPhone SE has it.

Contactless payments and super-fast Wi-Fi

The new iPhone SE has NFC and Apple Pay for fast payments in stores. Interestingly, unlike Android's Google Pay, you don't have to enter a PIN sometimes, just put your finger on the fingerprint scanner and that's it.

Fast Wi-Fi 6 in the ax standard allows you to effectively use very fast Internet at home or in the office, of course, provided that you have a Wi-Fi ax router. Bluetooth v5.0 is also on board, for wireless headphones, smartwatches or other accessories.

Face ID? No. Touch ID. Yes

Let's take a moment to look at the oldest component of the 2nd generation iPhone SE. Yes, we are talking about the Touch ID fingerprint scanner . The smartphone uses a second generation scanner model. This first appeared in the iPhone 6s, back in 2015.

Five year old fingerprint scanner is still good . It sets up quickly and comfortably, recognizes your finger instantly, and unlocks your smartphone in a split second.

According to my personal feelings, the unlocking speed of the 2nd generation iPhone SE is higher than on the iPhone 8. Here it is worth saying thanks to the A13 processor, which simply reproduces the unlocking animation faster than the A11 chip in the G8.

Is it okay to use Touch ID in 2022? Yes, it is quite. Many people still haven’t gotten involved in this whole saga with face scanners and prefer the good old finger scanner. Personally, I prefer Face ID, but I also feel comfortable using Touch ID. There are no unpleasant sensations, like from some outdated technology.

This is a dual SIM iPhone

The new iPhone SE has dual SIM (dual standby) so you can use two phone numbers on one device. However, it should be understood that one number will be on the physical card (nano SIM) and the other on the eSIM (software, electronic SIM card).

The smartphone is perfect for those who take a lot of photographs and videos, and at the same time want the latest iPhone.

Instead of the iPhone 13, you can buy last year's 12 Pro. The latter costs less, has a fresh design with “chopped” edges, an additional camera with 2x zoom, but discharges a little faster.
