Is an Internet connection necessary for the NFC module to work and make payments?

NFC is a contactless data transfer technology that allows you to exchange digital information between devices. The technology instantly connects to another device or payment terminal. Data transfer speeds are slow, so NFC was previously used to exchange text files and links. Now this technology is necessary for making contactless payments.

How to use NFC technology?

First, make sure your smartphone has an NFC chip. To do this, download the NFC Check application from Google Play and launch it. If the chip is installed, synchronize it with an active bank card, after which you will be able to pay for purchases and services via phone. Detailed instructions for setting up NFC are available on our website.

To make a transaction, just unlock the device and bring it to the payment terminal or the sensor on the turnstile - the application will perform the operation automatically.

Method 3: Setting the date and time

Google Play uses a secure connection, for which the correct time settings are important. If the clock on your device is not working correctly, you will not be able to use the services of this corporation and many other websites.

  1. Launch device settings.
  2. Open the "System" tab.
  3. Go to the "Date and Time" section.
  4. Tap "Date".
  5. Set the day, month and year: indicate real data that is relevant at the moment. To confirm your actions, use the “OK” button.
  6. Now you need to set the real time by clicking on this option. It is not as important as the date, but still deserves attention.
  7. Set the desired parameters by moving your finger over the numbers, and save the changes by tapping the “OK” button.

Where else is NFC used?

In addition to non-cash payments, NFC technology is used to exchange data between two devices. Now this is relevant for connecting to portable speakers (as an analogue of Bluetooth).

NFC tags also look interesting. They are used for:

  • Pairs with wireless headphones or speakers.
  • Receive detailed information about products in stores.
  • Scan of travel tickets.

NFC tags can be programmed independently, using them to turn on a navigator, play music or the like. All you need to do is bring your phone with the function connected.

Method 7: Remove conflicting apps

Some software may block Google services from launching. For example, problems will arise when using Freedom, designed to cheat virtual values in games, since it replaces the authorization server. This and similar programs cannot definitely be called viruses, but it is better to abandon them, because along with the Play Market, other important services may stop working.

Google Pay without internet

Navigation:

  • Google Pay without Internet Payment process using G-Pay
  • Need for a network
  • Offline operation of the application

Google Pay is an application developed based on the Android operating system, supported by version 4.4 and higher. Can be used correctly regardless of the pre-installed graphical shell on the device (MIUI, Flyme and others), provided that the latter is official.

Payment process using G-Pay

To successfully implement payments from a smartphone, you must have the Google Pay application pre-installed. In addition, you need to configure it and add bank card details for subsequent purchases. If there is only one card, you don’t need to do anything else with it, just unlock your smartphone, bring it to the terminal, and the purchase is completed. Otherwise, you will need to select a card for payment, if one of the ones added earlier is not selected by default.

Android Pay in Russia and CIS countries - use of technology

A more detailed payment algorithm is as follows:

  1. Install the Google Pay application on your device;
  2. Add card details to the application;
  3. Make sure that the terminal in the store has a typical NFC function icon, or any other one confirming support for contactless payment;
  4. Unlock the device by making it active and bring it to the terminal at a distance of at least 10 centimeters, waiting for the smartphone to respond;
  5. Receive a notification about a successful purchase on your device screen and collect your receipt.

Need for a network

As you can see from the previous paragraph, we definitely had a need to connect to the network when installing the application. In order to answer the question about its relevance directly during payment, it is necessary to understand the operating principle of the chip itself.

When processing NFC using the application, information about bank cards is entered into the chip itself. When paying, the data is also transmitted by the chip itself, without the intervention of an Internet connection, and it does this in such a way that the seller cannot see any information about the card, because it is transmitted in encrypted form in the format of an executive command.

Method 2: Change DNS

You cannot use the Play Market if your smartphone uses a non-working DNS server to obtain information about domains on the Internet, or if the latter is heavily loaded.

Note! All subsequent screenshots in this article were taken on a device with a “pure” Android OS. If you are using custom skins such as MIUI or Samsung One UI, the procedure may differ slightly from the one below.

  1. Open your device's settings menu.
  2. Go to the Network and Internet category.
  3. Expand the list of additional connection options.
  4. Tap “Personal DNS Server”.
  5. Select the last option in the list and enter any of the following addresses:
    • 8.8.8.8. — Google;
    • 1.1.1.1. — Cloudflare;

  6. 208.67.222.222. - OpenDNS
  7. 77.88.8.8. — Yandex (not available to users from Ukraine).
  8. You can also use any other DNS available for the device by finding its address on the network. Apply the changes by clicking "Save".

    Important! Don't forget to put a period at the end of the IP address.

When you can't do without the Internet

The Internet is needed if the cardholder makes an online purchase. Here you will need network access for the program to complete the transaction. The payment principle is the same as when using the electronic wallet Yandex.Money, Qiwi, etc.:

  1. Add the desired product to your cart on the online store website.
  2. Click on the make a purchase button and select Google Pay from the list of payment options.
  3. Next, the program will open and you will need to select a card for payment.
  4. Once payment is confirmed, funds will be instantly debited from your account. Ready.

There is one more time when you will need an Internet connection when paying with Android Pay. When a user pays for a purchase in a store, a randomly generated code (token) is sent to the reading terminal, which serves instead of details. And if the smartphone owner makes several purchases in a row, he will need access to the Internet to update the existing codes.

Using random codes is convenient because this way, attackers will not find out the details of your bank card and will not be able to hack it. And if they intercept the token, they will not be able to use it, because... the code will not help when accessing the system.

Note! Often, an update is required every time 2-3 checks are paid, so the downloaded tokens will last for a whole day. And as soon as you connect to the Internet, new codes will be automatically downloaded.

Need for a network

You will also need an Internet connection when registering in the application and linking a card. This is quite easy to do:

  1. Sign in to your Google account. If you don’t have an account, create one on the official Google website and log in.
  2. Open the Google Pay app and click on the "Add" button.
  3. Next, take a photo of the card or enter its details manually.
  4. Confirm the terms of the user agreement with Google. Before doing this, it is recommended to study the main points.
  5. A message with a confirmation code will be sent to the specified number; enter it in the appropriate field on the screen.
  6. Wait for the system to check the data and link the card. This takes up to 15 minutes. After adding the card, you will be able to use the application, and you will not need the Internet for NFC payment with Google Pay.

Advice! If the card does not appear in your e-wallet within an hour, write to Google support (contacts are listed on the official website).

With a complete lack of communication

Does NFS work without the Internet at all? If there is no connection at all, both on the terminal and on the phone, the money will not be debited. This applies not only to contactless payment. Even with a card using a magnetic tape, you cannot pay without an established connection with the bank. Even if the phone has Internet, but the terminal has lost connection with the bank. Data from the phone is transmitted through a magnetic field, and the terminal transmits the transaction via the Internet and in the latter case it is necessary.

Method 5: Managing router settings

It's possible that your router's settings include a "white list" that severely limits the number of available websites. To enter the Play Market, you must turn off such filtering or add Google servers to the list of exceptions. In addition, the situation may be caused by problems with detecting the Internet cable, which can be solved according to the instructions from the corresponding article on Lumpics.ru.

Conditions required for Android Pay to work properly

Otherwise, besides an occasional Internet connection, only two conditions are important for the contactless service to work: the required level of charge and the absence of fraud with the firmware.

Regarding the first, the phone must be charged at least 15%, otherwise the application will simply refuse to work. This applies to both iPhone and Android smartphones.

The second means that you cannot enable Root rights on the phone. Many users, in order to unlock all the capabilities of their smartphone, make themselves an administrator and make adjustments to the operation of the software, which is fundamentally inconsistent with the security policy of banking transactions.

Method 1: Reboot your smartphone

The most commonplace, but still possible option involves simply rebooting the device. Just hold down the screen lock button of your Android smartphone until the action selection window appears, where you need to tap “Restart” or “Restart” (depending on the OS version). If you need to confirm the action, do so by clicking “OK”.

Which devices are suitable?

You already know that the built-in NFC chip is responsible for the operation of the technology. This module is not available in all Apple models - it can be found:

  • On iPhone SE;
  • On iPhone 6 and later models;
  • On Apple Watch;
  • On iPad;
  • On Mac computers.

You can use the service on iPhone 5/5C/5S models - but only if you have a connection with a watch from the developer!

We talked about whether the Internet is needed for Apple Pay - now you can make payments for purchases at any time, even if there is no connection to the global network. Use the convenient service and do not deny yourself the necessary services and goods!
