Why the monitor does not turn off when idle and how to set up the screen on Windows 10

How to Set Windows 10 Screen Timeout

In the Windows 10 operating system, the wait period before turning off the monitor to save power is usually 10 minutes. In addition, when the monitor turns off, the computer locks. Further work is possible only after entering the password for the user login used. And if on PCs used as workstations in large companies and in production this is a necessary measure due to security requirements, then on ordinary home computers there is no need for this. Moreover, this mechanism becomes very inconvenient: I went into the kitchen for coffee and the operating system was blocked. To customize power saving and adjust the screen shutdown time in Windows 10, you need to open the power options. To do this, press the Win+R key combination and write the command powercfg.cpl. Like this:

You should see a window like this, from which you can configure the computer's power management schemes:

The power supply system that is currently used by Windows 10 will be highlighted in bold. To enter its configuration, you need to click on the link “Setting up the power supply scheme”.

The next window separately displays the parameters for putting the display into sleep mode. The line “Turn off the display” will contain the timeout that is currently used in the circuit. To configure the Windows screen timeout, simply click on the down arrow and a drop-down list will appear with all possible values. You can set it to half an hour, an hour, or even disable this function to remove the display from turning off completely. Don't forget to click the "Save Changes" button to apply the selected timeout value.

How long have you cleaned your system unit or laptop?

The problem is as old as the world, but still. How long has it been since you cleaned your computer? If it's been a long time, then that could be the problem. And now you are trying to understand why the monitor lights up and goes out immediately after loading Windows...

Dust can interfere with the operation of the video card or RAM, so it is recommended to clean the system unit as soon as possible. Or take it to a service center and have them clean it. And in the future, do not run your computer to this state.

Windows 10: Turn off screen in lock mode | IT notes on WordPress.com

The new Windows 10 OS seems to have been released with a lot of flaws (small and not so). Some of them do not directly affect the functionality of the OS, but cause some discomfort.

One of these shortcomings is the absence in the OS settings, by default, of the ability to adjust the wait time before the screen turns off in computer lock mode. The user locks the computer and, after half a minute or a minute, the monitor screen turns off.

A solution to this problem was found on the Microsoft support forums. The procedure is as follows:

  1. Run the system registry editor (regedit.exe program) and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings\7516b95f-f776-4464-8c53-06167f40cc99\8EC4B3A5-6868-48c2-BE75-4F3044BE 88A7.
  2. Set the Attributes parameter to 2 (dword:00000002) and close Registry Editor.
  3. Open advanced power options (Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options\Change circuit settings\Change advanced power settings). In the window that opens, in the “Screen” branch, a new item “Waiting time before turning off the console lock screen” will appear. Its default value will be “1 minute”. Set the waiting time interval you need and click the “Ok” button.

Additional power options

All. Now the monitor screen in lock mode will go dark after a user-set time.

By the way, this method also works for Windows 8.1, which has the same problem.

Poorly connected wires

The next reason the monitor turns off is poorly connected wires. We are talking about a cord from the monitor to the system unit (more precisely, to the video card). Perhaps you accidentally caught it or pulled it. Perhaps one of your family members did this, or maybe even your favorite cat or dog.

In any case, this should be checked first. To do this, simply disconnect the wire on both sides, wipe (blow), and then connect it again. May I help.

To begin with, it is recommended to unplug the cord only from the monitor side. If the message “No signal” appears on it, then I have 2 news for you. The good one is that everything is fine with it, it is not broken, but the bad one is that you still don’t know why the screen immediately turns off when you turn it on.

Another common problem is cable damage. To check this, you need to find a similar cord and connect it.

Why does Windows 10 monitor turn off?

In a computer, although it is more appropriate to use a laptop, after a certain period of time on Windows 10 the screen turns off / the monitor turns off.

Why? This was done in order to save power (saving battery power in laptops).

I would not recommend that you neglect, or rather turn off this function completely - it is better to change the settings at your discretion.

By default (if you haven’t changed anything on your Windows 10 yourself), the screen turns off after 5 minutes, from the battery after two.

How to prevent the screen from turning off on Windows 10

To prevent Windows 10 from turning off the monitor, log into the classic control panel and go to the power section.

Then it is advisable to set the settings to high performance and then click on the line: “Setting the power supply scheme.”

Now as in Fig. Below, select the Never disable option. Then click “save changes”.

You can go even further - click on the line: “change additional power settings” and on all items related to turning off the screen/monitor, select “never” so that it does not turn off.

NOTE: I still recommend not setting it to never, especially on battery if it’s a laptop - I set the screen to turn off after 5 minutes and the computer monitor to turn off after 10 minutes. Good luck.

Changing what the power button does

The easiest way is to change the action of the power button so that it does not turn off the laptop, but only the screen. This can be done in Windows 10's Power Options, a feature introduced with the Creators Update.

Open the Control Panel with the command control, launched from the Run window (Win + R).

Switch the view in the upper right corner to large icons and go to the Power Options section. Or you can make it simpler, right-click on the battery icon in the Windows 10 notification area and select the specified section.

Hardware problems

Often the monitor turns off spontaneously due to hardware problems, which can be very different. A common situation is damage to the cable or connector. If the cable is old or has been exposed to strong external influences, it is likely that it has defects. Inspect it, make sure there are no kinks or kinks, and at the same time check the serviceability of the connectors and adapters. To completely eliminate problems with the cable, replace it with a new one.

Malfunction of random access memory (RAM)

For this reason, the monitor goes out quite less often, but it still happens sometimes. Perhaps you recently bought new RAM. Or maybe she just had time.

If you have several sticks of RAM, you can disable one. Or swap them. You can also check your RAM from a friend or take his RAM and connect it at your place. If this is the problem, you will immediately understand it.

Motherboard or processor malfunction

This is probably the worst of all possible options. It is a breakdown of the processor or a short circuit in the motherboard that causes the screen to go dark a second after turning it on, but the computer continues to work.

By the way, yes - the system unit can still function. In particular, the coolers will spin, creating the illusion that everything is normal. But in such situations, you may need to replace the processor or motherboard (or at least repair them) - and this will cost you money.

However, problems with the monitor could have occurred for other reasons, but in this particular case it is best to entrust computer diagnostics to specialists.

Overheating of hardware components

Overheating of components, including the graphics card, does not always lead to a BSOD or shutdown of the computer. Increased loads that occur, for example, when running particularly demanding games, may well cause individual components to shut down. If the monitor goes out during a game, but the system unit continues to work and the audio is also played normally, then overheating is very likely. The problem can be solved by cleaning the system unit, installing a more efficient cooling system, and replacing thermal paste.

The video card driver is not working correctly

If the device is NOT functioning normally, some conflicts were detected, or the previous method did not help you, then we will act more aggressively:

  1. Boot your PC again into safe mode and go to Device Manager.
  2. Open the “Video adapters” item and find your video card.
  3. Right-click on it and select “Delete” (don’t worry, this is the usual driver removal procedure).
  4. Confirm the deletion and restart your PC - it should start in normal mode.
  5. Install the driver on the video card from the disk included in the kit, or download it from the official website.
  6. Reboot your computer again to make sure the monitor no longer goes blank.

It is recommended to install drivers only from the disk! There was a case when downloaded from the office. For some reason the sites were installed crookedly. The problem was solved by installing the drivers from the disk (then you can install a new, more current version on top of them).

Video card malfunction

Most often, the monitor turns on for 2 seconds and goes off due to a faulty video card. After all, it is she who is responsible for displaying the image on the screen. And the cord from the monitor is connected just to it.

The most reliable way to make sure that the monitor is going dark because of the video card is to connect another one and try to turn on the computer. You can take it from your friends or acquaintances (if you have any).

As an alternative, you can connect another monitor (again, you need to borrow one from friends). If you do not have this option, then skip this step and move on to the next one.

The problem may be due to overheating of the video card. The cooler (fan) is broken, the cooling system is not doing its job, etc. To make sure of this, turn off your computer and wait 20-30 minutes (more is possible). If the problem was overheating, then it should turn on normally. In this case, you will need to resolve the issue of cooling the video card or replacing it.
