If you're having connection issues or find that they're not charging correctly, you may need to reset your AirPods or AirPods Pro. Here's how to do it.
You might want to clean them up while you're at it.
It's been a long time since Apple shipped a device with a built-in reset switch, but even its latest products sometimes require more than a restart. The most common reasons why you need to reset any edition of AirPods or AirPods Pro are problems with their connection.
In some cases, you may also find that your AirPods case and AirPods are not charging properly. Over time, it may be that you do experience an inevitable decline in the charging capacity in these tiny batteries, or it may become a problem that a reboot will solve.
Airpods won't connect to phone or macbook
Important. If there is a problem connecting the earbuds to an iPhone, iPad or Macbook, it is recommended to reset the Airpods only when other steps to resolve the problem have failed.
First, try to eliminate the obvious causes of the device synchronization glitch.
Causes | Elimination |
The batteries in the earbuds/charging case are low | Make sure your Airpods have enough charge |
Check if the bluetooth adapter is turned on at the sound source | On your iPhone, iPad or Mac, open the appropriate Control Center and turn on Bluetooth |
Software failure on the device you are trying to connect the ears to | Reboot your gadget |
If simple steps fail to set up synchronization of the device with the ears, proceed to radical measures.
How to restore AirPods if they won't charge?
Obviously, if the headset breaks down, it should be taken to a service center. This is usually what users do. There is one “but” - charging problems are not always the result of a breakdown. There are a couple of basic diagnostic measures that are easy to perform on your own.
What do we have to do:
- make sure that all cables are connected and that there are no physical problems on them: abrasions, breaks, serious damage;
- check that the connected device is correct. The charging case and headphones must be positioned correctly. AirPods must fit exactly in the case;
- try charging the case for 15 minutes. The case with the headphones inside needs to be brought to the iPhone, then the cover should be opened. The devices should be brought as close as possible to each other. After a few seconds, the connection to the headphones will appear (if Bluetooth is activated). There should be a lightning bolt next to the AirPods icon.
If there is no positive effect from the listed actions, technical assistance will most likely be required.

How to reboot AirPods of different versions
To reboot AirPods of the first and second generations, as well as AirPods Pro, you need to place the headphones in the charging case, close the lid and wait more than 10 seconds.
To reboot AirPods Max, you need to simultaneously hold down the noise reduction button and the Digital Crown, as soon as the indicator next to the charging port turns orange, immediately release both buttons (holding time is approximately 12 seconds).
On a note. Try not to miss the moment when the indicator lights up orange, as if you overexpose, you risk resetting the headphones to factory settings.
