Xiaomi Redmi Airdots wireless headphones have collected a lot of positive reviews and even made it into our rating of the best headset options for sports. Users appreciated everything about them - the elegant design, high-quality materials, and the comfortable anatomical shape of the ear plugs.
There is only one problem with them - there is no voice instruction in Russian for Redmi Airdots. The headset currently only supports Chinese, all recommendations are pronounced in it. But in the manual, which is presented in text form, everything is not always clear.
However, this is easy to fix. Because the headphones turn on and off easily. The only difficulties are caused by the display and the pairing process (headphones with each other and both of them with the smartphone). We will look at these questions, as well as the main points related to the operation of a wireless headset.
What you need to know
First, 5 facts that are not directly related to the Redmi Airdots settings, but are useful for the user to know:
- The device comes complete with a charging case, which can recharge the headset several times (up to 4 times on its own full charge);
- The operating time of the headphones from full charge to shutdown is about 4 hours (accordingly, the maximum operating time when the case is fully charged is 12–16 hours);
- charging time in the case – from 45 minutes;
- It is better not to let the headphones turn off due to discharge; there is information that after such a “shake-up” they become desynchronized;
- Battery capacity (in each ear) – 40 mAh.

Turning headphones on or off
While the headphones are in the charging case, they are turned off. As soon as the user takes them out, the devices should signal that they are turned on (automatic option). This looks like the red indicator changing to white (at first it will flicker quickly, then the flickering speed will decrease - this is how the headphones search for connected devices).
If this is the first time you turn it on, then according to the instructions, you first need to remove the Redmi Airdots from the case (after charging), and then press and hold the button, which is located on the outer part of each earbud (it won’t be possible to confuse it, there is only one there). Five seconds of holding - the device will begin to flicker with a white indicator, which means it is turned on and is looking for something to synchronize with.
Disabling is done in one of two ways:
- With the earphone turned on, you need to press the touch button and hold it for 5 seconds;
- just put the device in the case in the charging slot (if the case is working properly and the device starts charging, it will turn off automatically).
Charger
The gadget will not work if it is not charged, so before use, place it in the case to fill the battery. If the indicator is red, the Redmi Airdots are charging; if it is white, they are ready for use.
Remove the headset from the case and wait a couple of seconds - the earbuds should synchronize with each other. When the left one catches the signal from the right one, synchronization is complete, as indicated by the indicator that will begin to flash white.
Playback control and answering/rejecting calls
Since there is only one button on the back of the headphones, all available functions are performed only with its help. Only the conditional code changes - the number of touches and the duration of the hold.
Control of Redmi Airdots depends on what they are used for at a particular moment.
- While listening to music: one short touch – pause;
- two short touches - launch the next track or turn on the voice assistant (the Xiaomi headset, like most analogues, including mono devices, works with all popular products - from Google Assistant to Alexa).
- one short touch - answer the incoming call (if the user was listening to something before, the track will pause so that you can talk);
Sound amplification
Many users are interested in the settings of Xiaomi headphones in terms of amplifying sound volume. Control is powerful using buttons on the headset or in the smartphone settings. If this does not help, you can use alternative methods:
- Recovery. Enter the menu of the same name by long pressing the down and power button (the combination may be different) and enter the Install with zip section. You must first install special files and set their path.
- System file correction. If the Xiaomi volume is too weak, you can adjust it using the system capabilities. To do this, get Root rights, and then download any file manager, go to the Root Explorer section and find the file mixer_paths_tash. Open it and find ctl name=HPHL Volume value=11 and another similar line, but with HPHR. Set a higher value - from 11 to 16.
- USSD code. Alternatively, dial the combination #*#3646633#*#* in the “Phone” section and go to the engineering menu. Replace Level in the Volume section to adjust the volume louder. In this case, each subsequent value must be increased by 12.
- Change region. If the sound is too quiet after the update, go to Settings, go to Advanced, and then Region. Select China/Taiwan.
- Save and restart your device.
Synchronizing headphones with each other
So, we’ve decided on the basic settings, all that remains is to figure out what raises the most questions: how to synchronize Redmi Airdots. In fact, there are no particular difficulties at this stage. The only problem is that the headphones don't always work as they should, and some manipulations will need to be repeated. As a rule, this applies to gadgets that have been actively used for some time and were repeatedly discharged before being turned off.
The process for syncing your Airdots for the first time looks like this:
- we take out the earbuds from the charging case (if it has been working for some time, it’s worth recharging), and the experts advise you to first take out the left one, and then the right one;
- simultaneously press the touch buttons of both devices (the indicator will start flickering)
- wait until the white indicator starts to light only on the right earphone;
- That's it, the devices are synchronized and ready to connect to your phone or laptop.
Forced desync
If such a need arises (or as part of “therapeutic” manipulations, until the headphones begin to work in pairs), synchronization can be reset. To do this, both devices in the off state (you can do this directly in the case) need to be activated by pressing and holding the touch button. You must hold it for at least 20 seconds, watching how the red and white indicators first flash alternately, then they go out, and then flash again the last 3 times. After this, we can assume that the devices are out of sync. Easier than many premium models.
Additions from the author
There is nothing more to add here. But if there is anything else, write, I will add it below.
- Yes, the headphones pair perfectly with both Android and Apple - no problems were noticed in operation, the Bluetooth standard is the same for everyone (well, almost).
- Another very common problem with invisible headphones is that they are simply discharged or the battery has died. I recommend charging it fully and making sure that the lights indicate that the device is working and is being searched.
- Not all headsets support connecting multiple devices to them - so before looking for and connecting headphones, I recommend making sure that they are not already connected to another device (in my case, headphones are often connected to the laptop before they even find the phone).
- Connection to Windows computers also occurs without any problems. In my practice, Xiaomi always works without any pitfalls, the sound goes to both headphones.
- And yes, I almost forgot, Xiaomi phones easily connect to any Bluetooth headphones without visible restrictions. Like any Xiaomi headphones, they work with any technology. Those. We understand that Bluetooth technology is backwards compatible for everyone. Therefore, if something doesn’t work or doesn’t connect, either you haven’t activated the pairing mode, or the battery is dead, or it’s time for your headphones to go to the trash. Happy End) For non-believers there is still a factory reset. But personally, I really don’t like this thing (I only reset it when I change my phone).
Pairing headphones with a phone or laptop
How to connect bluetooth headphones to a Xiaomi phone:
- turn off Bluetooth on your smartphone;
- repeat the synchronization procedure (remove the headphones from the case, simultaneously press and hold the buttons, wait for the devices to find each other);
- when only the white indicator on the main – right – earphone is lit, you can turn on Bluetooth on your smartphone and start searching;
- In the list of found devices, select Xiaomi Airdots R (right main earphone), and you can listen to music.
How to remove a pairing
If necessary (again, as part of testing, run both headphones at the same time), pairing with the phone can be canceled. To do this, in the device itself (smartphone or laptop) with the headphones turned off, you need to start Bluetooth, find Xiaomi Airdots in the list and delete the entry. After this, turn off Bluetooth on your phone/computer, turn on the headphones and reset the settings (the buttons on the headphones must be pressed and held for at least 10 seconds).
How to set up Xiaomi Buds 3 Pro wireless headphones
Let's move on to the process of connecting and setting up the latest Xiaomi wireless headphones at the time of writing - Mi True Wireless Earphones 3 Pro, or Buds 3 Pro for short. To activate the pairing mode with an Android smartphone, we also open the case lid and press the button, which is located at the bottom of the case, next to the USB port for charging. The LED indicator should change color from green to flashing white.
Next, everything follows the above scheme - in the operating system, in the Bluetooth settings, in the list of gadgets available for connection, we find headphones called “Xiaomi Buds 3 Pro”, and add them.
At the same time, if you have a Xiaomi smartphone in your hands, then after turning on the search mode on the headphones, a beautiful pop-up animated window will appear on the phone screen. It allows you to connect in literally two touches. Smartphones of other brands do not have this privilege when establishing a connection with a Xiaomi headset.
Mi Buds M8 mobile application for Xiaomi and Redmi headphones
I suggest you consider detailed settings of gestures on Mi Buds 3 Pro using the custom mobile application “Mi Buds M8” from a domestic developer, which is available on the Google Play Market for Android. It has all the same functions, but is more convenient in that the entire menu is in Russian. It’s a pity that there is no version for iOS—you’ll have to connect Xiaomi and Redmi headphones to your iPhone the old-fashioned way through Bluetooth configurations.
If you have not yet connected Xiaomi headphones to your smartphone, when you first launch the application, you will be prompted to select your TWS headset model from the list of supported ones
After which, the screen will display brief instructions for setting up and resetting Xiaomi (Redmi) headphones. Essentially, this says what I already wrote above - that you need to turn on Bluetooth on your smartphone, open the case and press the button once to put the headphones into pairing mode.
Since we have already done this, we immediately get to the application’s start screen. It is exactly the same as what we saw in Honor and Huawei headphones - it’s obvious where the author got his ideas from. This is correct, because this interface is very user-friendly and intuitive. So, the first block displays the current charge level of the headphone batteries in %. For some reason, the remaining battery capacity of the case is not visible
Noise reduction and sound transmission
Below is a block for turning on noise reduction and sound transmission modes. Xiaomi (Redmi) noise reduction is very serious and has 4 operating modes:
- Weak
- Balanced
- Deep
- Adaptive
The latter is especially interesting, because it adjusts the microphones depending on the surrounding environment. If you are traveling on the subway, then maximum suppression of extraneous sounds will work. If you are in a quiet room at home, you will be able to clearly hear what is happening around you.
The transparency mode, or “sound transmission” as it is called here, has two settings - weak and strong. In strong conditions, microphones work as a kind of hearing aid, not only transmitting external sounds, but even further amplifying them.
Setting up gestures
I think most readers came to this article specifically for instructions on setting up gestures for controlling music and video playback on Xiaomi or Redmi headphones. Mi Buds 3 Pro has four main gestures that are triggered by squeezing the leg of the wireless module. Almost all of them are programmable, and different functions can be assigned to the right and left earbuds.
- Single touch right or left (not programmable) - pause and play the current track
- Double Clamp - Next Clip or Increase Audio Volume
- Triple tap - Previous track or Volume down
- Long press - Call voice assistant or Switch between noise canceling modes
It’s a bit of a strange decision that you can’t assign essentially the same actions to different headphones. For example, double tapping the right one increases the sound, and double tapping the right one decreases it. Or triple click on one - switches to the next video, and on the other - to the previous one.
Advanced Settings Menu
But the Mi Buds M8 app offers a large number of additional functions that can be applied to their supported Xiaomi or Redmi models.
- Ear detection—Enables a proximity sensor that detects whether the earphone is in or out of your ear. When pulled out, music playback is paused and resumes when put back in place.
- Connect to 2 devices - enable the ability to simultaneously work with two gadgets at once
- Automatic answer—pick up the handset when you receive an incoming call, hands-free
- Widget in the notification panel - enable a widget that will be constantly displayed in the top curtain of Android when Xiaomi headphones are actively connected to the smartphone. It displays the current charge of the headset and the noise reduction mode selection menu
- The pop-up dialog is an implementation of the same feature that is available by default to owners of Xiaomi smartphones.
When you connect headphones to Android, a pop-up animated window appears on the phone screen, which displays an image of the wireless headset and, again, the current battery charge level. In order to enable this setting and work correctly, you need to go to the permissions of all applications and open overlay support in each of them on it another Android application, that is, our Mi Buds M8 - Fit check - allows you to find the optimal position of the headphones in your ears for comfortable listening. The application plays sound and, based on data received from its microphone, determines how tightly the headset fits. If the result is negative, you can change the ear pads for others and repeat until you achieve the ideal result.
- Lost warning - if you enable this option, then when the earphone is removed from your ear for more than 3 minutes, if it is also not in the case, you will receive a notification that the TWS module may have been lost
- Headphone search - helps you find a lost headset. The main thing is that it continues to be connected to the phone via Bluetooth. You can choose which module you want to find - right, left, or both. When you press the corresponding button, a high-pitched beep will sound from the headphones speakers
Software Update
And finally, the last function available for configuration in the mobile application today is >>updating the firmware of Xiaomi and Redmi wireless headphones. I think there is no need to explain here - click on the button to start checking for the latest version of the software on the developer’s remote official server.
Connecting one earphone
If you only need to connect one of the headphones, for example, as a headset, you can do one of two things:
- Take one device out of the case, turn it on and find it in the list of devices on your phone, using the Airdots connection instructions. In short, you need to turn on Bluetooth on the device, search and select Xiaomi Airdots L or Xiaomi Airdots R from the list - the left or right earphone, respectively.
- Turn off one earphone by placing it to charge or by long pressing the touch button. Then the phone will find only the device that remains turned on.
Results
Now you know how to set up Xiaomi wireless headphones and the principle by which they are turned on and off. In practice, connecting a headset is not difficult due to the automation of the process. The main thing is to immediately charge the product to the required level, turn on Bluetooth on your phone and wait for the connection. The appearance of the name in the list of connected devices indicates successful pairing. In the future, switching will occur automatically. In this case, the user can configure the connection or change its name.
Indication
In addition to controlling the button (selecting frequencies, number of presses and holding duration), when working with Xiaomi Airdots, you can also be guided by the color of the headset indicators. They can be white or red. Flickering light means that the device is in progress (white - searching for connection, red - charging). No light means the headphones are turned off. If the light is white before turning off, it means the headset is fully charged. If it's red, it's completely discharged. Alternating red and white flashing indicates the reset procedure before connecting your Airdots again.
How to use Xiaomi AirDots?
Unlike the well-known AirPods, Xiaomi AirDots do not automatically turn off after being removed from the ears. To stop playback, you need to put them in the case:
- if you remove only the left earphone, the right one will continue to work;
- If you remove the right one, both will turn off.
AirDots supports all known voice assistants, incl. Alice, Siri and Google Assistant. Operating the device is intuitive and simple:
- with a single touch of the sensor, music playback will pause, and in the event of an incoming call, pressing the key will establish a connection with the subscriber;
- when you double tap, the voice assistant menu appears;
- if held for more than a second, the call is canceled;
- Double tapping during a mobile call mutes the microphone.
Charging wireless Xiaomi AirDots is simple: just place the headphones in a special case for 45 minutes, which is equipped with a powerful 350 mAh battery. The case lasts for three charging cycles, after which you will need to connect it to a power source via micro USB. A red diode indicates the need to recharge the case, while white means the battery is fully charged.
Possible problems
What can go wrong:
- If the right or left earphone is silent, the problem may be either a discharge or a breakdown. The first step is to charge both the case and the device in it. If it doesn't work, the only thing left is the headset repairman.
- If the Xiaomi headphones do not pair with each other, it means that there has been a settings failure or a software failure of the entire system. The problem is usually solved either by resetting the settings (press and hold the button on both earbuds for 30-50 seconds), or by desynchronizing and re-searching for devices to pair. If several attempts are unsuccessful, try charging the case and holding the buttons on the headphones without removing them from the sockets.
It also happens that the smartphone does not see the wireless headset. In such a situation, you need to check whether Bluetooth is working correctly (whether another gadget sees the headset). As a rule, the problem is solved by rebooting both devices.
What to do if Xiaomi does not see the equipment
This problem can arise for several reasons, ranging from mechanical damage to device incompatibility. Therefore, before purchasing, you should find out which version of Bluetooth the accessory works with.
To fix the problem, you should start by diagnosing synchronization. Sometimes the connection freezes. In such cases, you need to cancel the process, then start pairing again. The device may not be selected. Often the reason lies in a discharged battery.
If the device previously worked with another phone, then it must be rebooted by long pressing the button (15 seconds).
Sometimes pairing requires you to enter a PIN code, which is included with the accessory instructions.
