Until recently, a smartphone screen with a diagonal of more than six inches caused laughter - how to use this monster?! Now we can confidently pick up devices with a seven-inch diagonal - and somehow manage. But in the budget segment, truly large screens are still rare - you can take a look at our selection of smartphones priced under 10 thousand rubles, where the limit is a diagonal of 6.52 inches. The BQ Magic L (BQ-6630L) goes beyond these boundaries, albeit slightly. With a diagonal of 6.53 inches, it turns out to be the smartphone with the largest display in the company's history.
This device boasts not only a hefty display, but also a dual rear camera, a 4920 mAh battery and “pure” Android 10.
Equipment
Let's start with the appearance and packaging. The BQ 6630L is packaged in a white box with the traditional “Magic” line’s carousel image on the cover.
The back of the box lists the technical specifications, which we will look into as we take a closer look at the smartphone.
The kit includes a power adapter and a cable with the good old micro USB connector for charging. As well as an instruction manual and a warranty card.
There are no paperclips in the set, since the phone is equipped with a removable cover, under which all connectors and slots are located
Appearance
BQ Magic L has three body color options. Some people will like gradient cherry or blue ones made of glossy plastic. But personally, I liked the black one with a rough coating better, which we got for review.
Thanks to this matte finish, the smartphone looks a little more solid than its counterparts. But the advantage of this color is not even in its appearance - this is still a subjective matter - but in the fact that it holds much better in the hand. With such a large display, this fact is very important.
The layout of keys and connectors on the case is classic for BQ. The power button and volume rocker are located on one side edge under the right thumb. At the same time, their location is ergonomically very convenient. You don’t need to reach out with your finger or grab your smartphone to reach them, as is sometimes the case with other even more famous brands.
The power connector and audio output for headphones are on the top. It’s also convenient, since with wired headphones (someone still uses them) and charging simultaneously connected, the smartphone can easily stand on a stand or lie in the pocket of a bag or coat.
But the speaker is not placed very well - the sound will come from under the back cover. Although, there is an overhang on it so that the holes do not completely overlap when the phone is lying on a horizontal surface. But this doesn’t save the situation much, and in games you will involuntarily cover them with your hand.
There is also a classic fingerprint scanner at the back.
What about security?
We have already written about the fingerprint scanner. The simplest, fastest and most universal solution. Works at any time of the day and in any situation.
But, if you want more, there is face unlocking. It works, but you need to understand that it will fail in the dark, just as failures are possible in very low light.
Battery
The lid is made of fairly elastic plastic, so prying it off with some plastic card and removing it is not difficult. Inside we find a 4920 mAh battery. The number is impressive, but given the size of the screen, even despite the energy-efficient processor, you shouldn’t count on miracles. Although the manufacturer claims that the smartphone can work for up to 5 days, most likely it means that it will lie idle in standby mode. With more or less active use, one charge will last for a day and a half.
Autonomy
According to the official specifications, the smartphone is equipped with a 4920 mAh battery. This volume provides up to 24 hours of continuous reading, more than 16 hours of video viewing and 7 hours of games. During normal use, it will easily last more than a day without recharging.
The battery can be charged in 4 hours using the original adapter. The Quick charge function is not supported, which is a disadvantage for many users.
Memory and flash drives
The main built-in flash drive has a capacity of 32 GB. Of course, this is very little today and the reserve is barely enough to host and operate the operating system.
But this should not bother the potential owner of the BQ-6630L, since the smartphone can accommodate an additional SD card with a capacity of up to 256 GB. And this is already a volume that can easily compete with all phones on sale. If you don’t skimp on the class of the flash drive, then the speed of writing and reading files can be close to the memory soldered on the board from the factory.

Screen
Let's finally talk about the screen. In addition to the 6.5″ diagonal, its distinguishing feature is its non-standard aspect ratio. Here it is 20:9, while the more common option among modern phones is 19:9.
This is done for ease of use with one hand. But at the same time, the placement of the video image suffers when playing from YouTube or other services - black bars appear along the edges. Although, undoubtedly, watching movies or playing games on such a huge diagonal will be a real pleasure.
The design of the screen is quite traditional. This is a high-quality IPS matrix that is not subject to fading in the sun. Viewing angles are maximum, no glare or distortion is observed. The display is covered with 2.5D glass with characteristic curves along the edges of the screen. Some people are now turning away from this solution in favor of flat screens, but personally I like exactly this tactile sensation when my finger slides off the edge.
We saved a little on the resolution, only 1600*720 (HD+). So if you look closely at the picture, you can find pixels. Although the graphics of the icons and pictures themselves are displayed quite richly and contrastingly.
However, the screen does not occupy the entire front surface of the smartphone. There are edges along the edges, although not as scary as the iPhone XR. But we haven’t been able to get rid of the BQ “chin” yet. Functional buttons "Menu", "Back" and "Home" are built into the system and are shown on top of the desktop. And underneath them is a fairly wide empty black area, which takes up space on the front panel and is not used in any useful way.
But in BQ Magic L they did not make a unibrow, which was already beginning to go out of fashion, limiting itself to a neat teardrop-shaped cutout for the camera in the center of the screen. The speaker is generally hidden in the edge of the case and is almost invisible.
Finishing about the display, I’ll add that right out of the box it is covered with a protective film.
Cameras and photos
The BQ-6630L phone is equipped with a dual main camera unit (12 + 0.3 MP) and an LED flash.
Despite the presence of a night mode in the application, acceptable pictures are obtained only during the daytime. It is possible to programmatically adjust the degree of background blur, but it will not be possible to compete with more expensive smartphones in terms of clarity, depth and color rendition.
The photos can be used on Instagram for viewing on your phone, but grain will be visible on a large computer or TV screen.
⇡#Camera
BQ Magic L received a double camera unit, where, together with the main module, which is directly responsible for shooting, there is an additional depth sensor with a resolution of 0.3 megapixels, which is connected exclusively in portrait mode.
The main module is equipped with a 12-megapixel sensor and an ƒ/2.0 lens. The autofocus system works with it, there is no optical stabilizer.
The portrait mode, despite the not very impressive resolution of the “depth sensor” (which, to be honest, is not important in this case at all), works tolerably - but you need to pose in the full-face software background blur mode; if you stand at an angle, the camera will not only draw “bokeh”, but also blur a part of the face. A customizable beautifier is also available.
Left – picture without HDR, right – with HDR |
When shooting basic scenes, it's surprising that HDR is turned off by default. I recommend immediately going to the quick settings of your smartphone camera and turning on automatic HDR shooting - this will greatly help not only in situations with contrasting lighting, but in general. The dynamic range of the camera is very weak, and without HDR it may not be enough even in cloudy weather (the sky may be overexposed).
On the left is a picture with standard settings, on the right is in night mode |
In night scenes, the BQ Magic L camera performs as you would expect from a budget smartphone - in the presence of serious external lighting, it can produce some results (although the percentage of blur will be noticeable), but in the dark it is completely powerless. I would like to note the night mode with multi-frame exposure stitching - in it the camera is able to achieve a good balance between lights and shadows, without gaps in contrast. But again we are talking about scenes with serious lighting.
BQ Magic L (BQ-6630L) camera app interface |
During the day, BQ Magic L takes acceptable photos, although there are a number of complaints - I mentioned the insufficient dynamic range above, and the general slowness of the application, which sometimes does not respond the first time to touching the virtual shutter button, is also somewhat confusing. There is also a certain amount of defective focus. The detail and white balance in daytime shots are quite normal.
Gallery of pictures
View all images (16)BQ Magic L can shoot video with resolutions up to Full HD at up to 30 frames per second.
The front camera of the BQ Magic L has an 8-megapixel sensor and ƒ/2.2 aperture optics, without autofocus or flash. You can take selfies with this smartphone - the sharpness is far from ideal, but the fixed focus is set more or less correctly, the spatial distortion of the wide-angle optics is not too significant, and the portrait mode works with correct background blur.
Wireless modules
The smartphone is equipped with all the necessary wireless modules, so there will be no problems when surfing the Internet or connecting additional devices. But WiFi here is limited to only the 2.4 GHz band. Therefore, playing video in high definition may be difficult. But given the capabilities of the screen itself - let me remind you, its resolution is only HD+ - this is not required, which means 2.4 GHz for 720P video speed and throughput of this network will be sufficient with a relatively noise-free airwave from interference from neighboring wireless networks. Of course, there is no talk about WiFi 6.
But what’s really nice is the presence of an NFC contactless payment module. The owner of BQ Magic L in the store will not feel discriminated against and will be able to pay for purchases directly from the phone without having to additionally take payment cards or cash out of his pocket.
How to work
This is not the first BQ smartphone we are testing, so its behavior is already predictable. If you have previously owned devices from this brand, then you will understand what we mean. Despite the fact that this is a budget device, it is quite a good representative of its price segment. Of course, it won’t be fair to compare it with the iPhone or Galaxy S21. But among those that cost similar money, it will be quite an interesting offer.
It has 3 GB of RAM, SC9863A processor and the latest version of Android. This is a good combination. Enough for the device to not set speed records, but not to slow down so much that it can be annoying. The system behaves responsively. All applications from the Play Market are available and will work. The device can store several recently opened applications in memory for quickly switching between them. First download of the application, cold start, yes, you will have to wait a little. But not critical. For very complex applications, perhaps a couple of seconds, for others a second or tenths. Again, remembering the price tag, we would even call this a good result.
Although, it should be noted that some animation glitches occur, nothing can be done. But not only the hardware is to blame for this, but also the logic of processing Android user gestures. It’s not for nothing that now some Xiaomi and other Chinese vendors, who are actively cutting their own proprietary shells, are starting to try to change this moment, giving priority to the user’s desires, and then to other processes. But this is already a deep customization and redesign of the system. Google apparently does not agree with this yet.
We try to download some 3D games at the same time to look at the graphics capabilities of the device, and note that Wi-Fi is not dual-band, only 2.4 GHz. However, can you tell me why you absolutely need 5 GHz support?
So, let's play Asphalt 9, Call of Duty:
Mobile, PUBG Mobile, and Mortal Kombat. The games start up, but you have to play them on minimum settings. Increasing graphics detail will result in stuttering. You can sweeten the situation by understanding that the smartphone screen is quite small when compared with monitors and TVs, so even low-quality graphics here are perceived much more pleasantly than, say, on a 27-inch monitor. In addition, we check how the GPS module behaves. The GPS Status application immediately reported that this smartphone model does not have a compass sensor. Well, just a note. Connecting to satellites from a cold start took less than 3 seconds. Excellent result. Since the smartphone has evolved from the telephone, we traditionally check this point, although we have long been accustomed to chatting. By the way, he writes voice messages clearly. When making calls, there were no complaints about the sound from subscribers, if you were in places with stable reception. In an underground passage, for example, of course, nuances are not excluded. Autonomy is the strong point of the BQ Magic 6630L. The 4920 mAh battery makes itself felt. And the latest versions of Android, in principle, use battery quite efficiently. But you should understand that operating time indicators will be different for everyone. Depends on the amount of time you spend on your smartphone in general, as well as in heavy games. It will definitely be enough for a day, and if you don’t play, then it will last for a couple of days. |
Review of BQ Magic L (6630L)
Overall, the BQ 6630L Magic L smartphone impressed me as a well-balanced, modern smartphone. There are compromises in technical characteristics and equipment, but the quality of workmanship and assembly is at a very decent level. And if you remember the cost of less than 10 thousand rubles, you come to the realization that it is difficult to demand more from a new phone under warranty with a large, good screen and NFC. Undoubtedly, the model will find its buyer.

Review and testing of the BQ 6630L Magic L smartphone
At the end of a difficult year for the whole world in 2022, BQ introduced a new smartphone 6630L Magic L, which features the largest display among the manufacturer’s smartphones - its diagonal is 6.53 inches. The new product also has a capacious battery (4920 mAh), a dual main camera, supports LTE and even NFC with contactless payment function, and for data storage we have 32 GB of internal memory, which can be expanded using a microSD card with a capacity of up to 256 GB inclusive. The smartphone is powered by an 8-core processor, which is paired with 3 GB of RAM. The set of characteristics is impressive, but even more impressions, which turn into real interest, are left by the cost of the model - less than 9,000 rubles. In our hand is a classic smartphone with a flat screen. The device fits well in a medium to large sized hand, but small hands may require some getting used to and/or using with both hands - anything larger than 6.5″ won't suit everyone. The side and top frames are quite thin, the bottom one is somewhat thicker. But comparing the BQ 6630L Magic L with frameless flagships of foreign production is hardly correct, because the price tag differs by at least 5 times, or even by an order of magnitude.
The camera is located in the upper central part of the screen. The cutout is branded V-Notch. The cutout itself is made neatly—the ladder of pixels is not visible even at close range.
Don't believe me? Here is the central part of the photo card above:
The back panel is made of plastic. There are three options to choose from, the color scheme of which affects not only the back panel itself, but also the side edges. In our case, wine red.
The side edges of the body and camera module are noticeably lighter, but if you look at it live, the transition between color brightness is not so strong.
The smartphone has a dual camera module - a main one with a resolution of 12 MP and an auxiliary one with a resolution of 0.3 MP. Below there was a place for an LED flash, and to the right, outside the area allocated for the camera, for a fingerprint scanner.
At the bottom of the rear panel there is a set of cutouts for the main speaker and a small bulge so that the speaker is not muffled when the smartphone is lying on the table with the screen facing up.
On the bottom edge there was a place for a conversational microphone.
On the right side there are volume control and power/lock buttons. The latter differs in size and type of surface - it is embossed.
The 3.5 mm audio jack and micro-USB port are located on the top edge.
The back cover is removed and provides access to the battery, memory card and SIM cards. The battery is pre-installed and can be replaced, but it won't be easy.
The smartphone supports the installation of two nanoSIM cards simultaneously. One of the slots is located next to the camera block.
And the second is on the side of the body. Next to it there was also a place for a microSD memory card slot.
