How to change numbers to letters in SMS on a push-button phone

The itel family review continues: the it5630 and it5616 provide more than childish entertainment

Today I have two models of the itel family for review: it5616 and it5630 . These are simple push-button devices whose direct function is to make calls. In terms of design and capabilities, they look quite basic. Let's see if these phones have any special features and why they might interest a potential buyer.

Comparison of technical characteristics of father (it5630) and son (it5616):

The delivery set is standard and includes a warranty card, user manual, battery and charger, one-amp for dad and 350mA for baby. No headset included. The warranty policy provides for the replacement of the device with a new device within 365 days if technical problems or malfunctions are detected, this is nice. The box is red, in the color of the brand. The main functional characteristics of the phone are listed, everything is as always, IMEI sticker, certified in Russia.

Despite the officially stated weight difference of only 25 grams, the it5630 seemed so heavy to me that the brush could actually sag while you were using it. It is basically large and even resembles a smartphone in size. In this regard, the it5616 really shows itself as a baby: it is lighter, fits easily into your pocket, and is comfortable to carry in addition to your main phone.

Dad is more serious, made of plastic, stylized as metal, with a smooth surface and a black insert along the contour. The baby's back cover is matte-rough, corrugated so that it does not slip out. The back panels do not wobble and are held quite tightly, the build quality is very ok.

Under the hood there are removable batteries, 4000 mAh and 2500 mAh, respectively, but you still have to manage to remove it. If you want to open the lid, you won’t open it. Again, the area around the recess into which the back panel clings is completely scratched. it5630 supports diversity: here you have both a slot for a standard SIM card and a micro-SIM; but it5616 has to be content with two old-school mini-SIMs.

Both have rounded edges and the itel logo is printed in silver underneath the display. There are no side buttons or connectors; both have a microphone and USB port located at the bottom of the case. it5616 also features an LED flashlight on the top of the candy bar. It shines very brightly, so you can easily blind uninvited guests even in daylight. The it5630 can use the camera backlight as a flashlight; by the way, it also shines pretty well.

The phone menu consists of three pages. It is immediately clear that the manufacturer focuses on communication and entertainment and lives up to its slogan: Join and Have Fun! Here you have Opera Mini, Facebook, an audio/video player, 3 pre-installed games and the Books application. The FM radio works without connecting headphones, which is probably why they are not included. In short, stay connected, listen to music and read. There is a voice recorder, quick activation of the energy saving mode. File manager, auto-shutdown function, calculator, calendar, alarm clock, everything is like everyone else.

A special menu item is a magic sound, with which you can change the tone of your voice during a conversation so that you are not recognized. Available tones: woman, man and child. Well, by the way, they may not recognize you during a call even without this function: the speaker and microphone are noisy, sometimes they make noise, the voice is distorted, depending on the signal level. In general, the phone picks up mobile networks in urban areas easily and without strain. The audibility of the bell is very good: it rings loudly even from a backpack completely stuffed with camping equipment, and it infuriates you while you take it out.

What can be done with cameras of 0.3 and 0.08 megapixels, it would seem? Itel can have fun even with a small pixel camera. On both devices, stickers are available in photo mode: animals, glasses, hearts, etc. Correction of light, white balance, contrast and brightness - all this is available. The baby’s maximum photo and video resolution is 240*320, the dad’s is 1200*1600 for photos and 352*288 for videos.

Easy shutdown of T9

Disabling this feature differs slightly on different phone models. Some may have the following sequence:

In many Nokia models, when writing a message, the predictive text input mode is indicated by the icon: a pencil with a line, and the regular input mode is indicated by a pencil without a line.

To switch between these modes when entering text, you need to press and hold "Options".

A little about T9

This word selection mode makes text entry easier and helps you type SMS messages much faster. However, you need to get used to working with it. The phone has a dictionary of frequently used words.

Predictive text input mode selects options based on the buttons you press. But some different words are typed using the same sequence of buttons.

For example, you can press 5282 to dial: “our”, “Masha”, “Pasha”, so before sending an SMS you need to make sure that you have typed the word you were going to.

In addition, you can add your own words: in the pop-up window with suggested spelling options, you need to select the bottom line “Add a word.”

What is T9 in a phone?

T9 is an auto-correction or auto-replacement function that works if you suddenly make a mistake while typing. It was introduced for phones with a keypad and selected probable words based on the first key presses. You only had to enter “at” and the language would add “hello” in its entirety. If you suddenly missed the right button, an automatic auto-correction occurred and your “hello” turned into a normal “hello”.

After the advent of modern smartphones with a qwerty layout of letters, this function has not lost its relevance and still significantly speeds up the typing function. In 90% of cases, the program correctly selects the necessary words, but does not cope well with slang or with the names of companies, programs, etc. The T9 keyboard for Android can be disabled if the user wishes, and then it can be turned on again when needed.

T9 function in WhatsApp

In order to understand in principle what we are talking about, let’s talk briefly about what this function is and why it was invented in the first place. The name comes from the English phrase “ text on 9 keys ” or text on 9 buttons. The fact is that old push-button phones had several letters for each mechanical key, hence the name.

On older phones, T9 made it easier to type a word or the correct letter, since without this feature you had to press a key several times to get the desired phrase. Built-in algorithms read the number of your clicks and what word you came up with, remembered it, and subsequently reproduced it on the screen. As practice has shown, this speeds up typing by 200-300%. Only in version 5.1 did it become possible to continue a word, part of which you had already written. And the first phone equipped with T9 was the Sagem MC 850.

In modern smartphones, such functionality is practically not used due to the stripped-down, but more convenient virtual keyboard. Now T9 refers to error correction and word prediction algorithms built into the keyboard.

How to make T9 in WhatsApp? You will learn about this at the end of the article. You can immediately scroll to the desired moment.

Advantages and disadvantages of the T9 system

We have already mentioned the advantages in passing - this speeds up the typing of text messages several times, compared to the usual input on push-button phones. The word continuation or auto-correction function is also used in modern phones.

The operating model also consists of remembering the text that a person enters while using the device, and then playing it back if certain conditions are met. So we can’t say that T9 has completely disappeared from modern smartphones, it’s just changed and has a different name.

As for the shortcomings, at the dawn of its existence, this system constantly malfunctioned and produced extra words or entire phrases, incorrectly replaced endings, and offered incorrect spelling options.

There were whole legends about this on the Internet, and there were a lot of jokes and memes related to the use of T9 in correspondence with family or a girlfriend/boyfriend.

Be that as it may, technology does not stand still, and today correction algorithms work according to the principles of old developments. If everything is clear with this, let's talk about how to enable and disable T9 in WhatsApp on different devices.

How to remove T9 on Android

Considering all the positive aspects of this phone feature, situations arise when it is more of a hindrance than a help. Most of this involves jargon, acronyms, intentional mistakes, or specialized terms from games, movies, or professions. Manufacturers have foreseen this situation and implemented several ways to disable T9 on Android:

Through system settings

The principle of how to disable auto-correction on Android is the same for all mobile devices, but, for example, Samsung, Lenovo and Nokia menu sections may differ slightly in name. By analogy, this procedure can be carried out with other brands of smartphones. Below are instructions on how to disable T9 on Android using the example of a Samsung phone - TouchWiz:

T9 typing mode: enable and disable on Android

The T9 text input mode has been familiar to many since the days of simple push-button phones. Remember those fun days when you spent days on end using ICQ from your mobile phone? It was at a time when mobile instant messengers began to slowly enter our lives that T9 became especially popular. From this article you will learn on what principle this typing mode works, and we will also tell you how to disable and how to enable the functionality on an Android device.

From the article you will learn

Completion

T9 is a popular and useful system that simplifies typing words or entire sentences on push-button phones. Of course, the first versions were unfinished, hence the distrust among most users. However, with version 5.1, better features have appeared. For example, the continuation of a word in part of what has already been written.

On modern smartphones there is no longer T9 as such, but there are auto-correction algorithms, hints and suggested words for continuing a sentence in a given context.

Be that as it may, everyone must decide for themselves whether to use the built-in functionality or not. The article provides comprehensive information on how to enable and disable T9 in WhatsApp on different devices.

How does T9 work?

Compared to simple “letter-by-letter typing,” this method can significantly increase the speed of typing. This is achieved through the use of an algorithm that, by intelligently accessing the built-in dictionary, is able to predict which word the user is currently typing.

The principle of operation is simple - we quickly type a word, and the system detects it right as we type and displays it next to the keyboard.

It is noteworthy that errors are also allowed during input, since in most cases the system is able to correctly identify a word based on only 50-70% of the characters entered correctly by the user. Comfortable? Not that word!

Of course, the possibilities of intelligent word selection are limited by the content of the dictionary. As a rule, most modern keyboards for Android are capable of independently remembering new words entered by the user that were not previously in the dictionary. Also, in some cases, you can download additional dictionaries created by developers or other users.

Initially, T9 mode is already enabled on most devices. However, in some cases, for example, if “naked” Android is preinstalled on a new device, the dictionary for T9 may not be installed.

Why disable T9

As we noted earlier, modern smartphones have a full QWERTY layout. Essentially, this is the same keyboard as on a laptop, which automatically opens when a person wants to type text.

With the right level of skill, you can quickly type a message and send it to a friend. At the same time, the advantages of T9 often turn out to be not very convenient. The dictionary, thanks to which the mode predicts the typing option, is quite meager. Therefore, a person may mistakenly type the wrong text. For example, instead of the desired word “chest of drawers,” the system prompts the user to “dig.” A person who is in a hurry chooses the wrong option, after which the recipient cannot understand the interlocutor.

Disabling T9 allows you to protect yourself from using predicted words. In this case, the person typing the text has complete control over the procedure. Only those letters that the user selects appear in the message. The system stops offering its options.

T9 is not supported by Google Keyboard. Therefore, if you use this particular layout, there is no need to disable the mode.

How to turn T9 on and off on Android?

It would seem, who and why might need to disable T9 mode? Almost always it works correctly and does not make significant errors when identifying words. However, as practice shows, in some cases T9 can interfere with comfortable work. For example, if the user is typing text on a tablet computer screen with a large diagonal or requires entering certain words (for example, when typing texts with technical content). In such cases, T9 can be removed.

How to disable T9 on Android? It's simple:

That's all. If you need to re-enable the mode, you can do this using the same method.

Important! If there is no option to disable T9 in the keyboard settings, you can get rid of it only by installing a new keyboard and customizing it according to your requirements.

Unfortunately, not all device manufacturers allow the user to independently disable predictive input on Android. Most often, such “surprises” are characteristic of some devices from Chinese developers.

In the video you can see how this is done on Samsung and Meizu devices.

How to enable Autocorrect?

Method 1: Android Settings

  1. Open Settings and go to Language & Input.
  2. Select the "Android Keyboard (AOSP)" section.
  3. Select Text Correction.
  4. Disable or enable all items responsible for correction: Blocking obscene words; Autocorrect; Correction options;

And so let's look at what this gives us. Before turning off T9 it was like this.

Accordingly, all errors will be automatically corrected after you press the space bar!

After turning off T9 (spell checking), nothing will be corrected after pressing the spacebar. But in this case, you need to monitor the grammar yourself.

By taking these simple steps, you can quickly enter text without auto-correcting words, which will make communication with your interlocutor comfortable.

↑ How to disable autocorrection on your phone

Autocorrect works correctly in most cases and corrects misspelled words written by humans. But, nevertheless, not everyone is comfortable with this function and many want to disable it, relying on their literacy.

↑ Installing a new dial pad

Many modern phones have a standard typing panel, and therefore it is not possible to disable T9 input. To do this, you need to download the “Russian Keyboard” application from Google Play and install it on your phone. After successful installation, follow these steps:

If there is no T9 mode in automatic mode and in the settings, then you can download the same application and select the desired mode for further work with the gadget. After installation, go to the “Language and Keyboard” section, click on the gear located on the same line with “Rus Key”. Then go to general settings, click on the “Portrait Mode” button and click on the checkmark next to T9.

If after this action the T9 mode does not work as expected, you need to download and install the dictionary. You can open the store and use the search bar to find the application. You can go to the “Language” tab and click on “Download dictionary”. The system will take you to the application store, where you can choose the one you like. See the rating and read reviews from users.

In the Google Play store you will find different applications, but before downloading, read the reviews, many of them lag or are oversaturated with advertising. One of the good applications for installing T9 typing can be called Smart Keyboard.

By following our instructions, you can disable T9 mode and the fix or enable this function if it is not built-in. It causes a double impression among users; initially, this mode was created for quickly typing text messages, but in practice, many users of smartphones and tablets are annoyed by using it. After all, sometimes correcting words can lead to an awkward position for the owner of the gadget. If you want to use the T9 function, you need to re-read them before sending a message.

Standard switching from numbers to letters in mobile phones with buttons

Let's look at the process of typing SMS on a standard phone and changing from numbers to letters:

  1. We enter the messages section (envelope symbol) from the push-button phone menu. To go to this menu, just press the large central button.
  2. Select “Write” and “SMS”. We operate the large up and down button, or additional arrow buttons to navigate through the menu.
  3. Select the recipient of the message. When his name and phone number appear in the top line, use the arrow to move to the message entry field.

  4. Press the button with the “#” symbol and change the input mode.

Standard push-button phones have "#" and "*" keys. One of them usually responds not only to changing numbers to letters, but also allows you to select uppercase and uppercase characters. To change the input mode, just press the corresponding button 1-2 times. On some models, using the hash and asterisk, you can select the use of T9 (automatic word correction) and disable it.

There are also models that have a button with an “up arrow” icon. It is responsible for changing the case of typed letters . To capitalize only one letter, it is usually enough to press this key once. If you press again, all text will be typed only in capital or small letters.

After the message has been typed (you can switch from letters to numbers at any time if necessary), all that remains is to click “Send”. But this is not all the capabilities of push-button telephone models. You can perform other actions with text.
